CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,

who stretches out the heavens,

who sends light to the nations,

who gives breath to us all.

Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence for reflection and self-examination.

Loving God,

we confess that we have turned from your way

to follow our own ways.

Forgive us for the times

we have spoken or acted too quickly;

we have not spoken or acted at all;

we have hurt those closest to us;

we have hurt those we have yet to know; we have thought more about ourselves than others;

we have thought less of ourselves than we ought.

Turn us around, and give us a fresh start,

so that we can live again as your children. Amen.

Even when we have done wrong, God makes us right. Even when we have messed

up, God puts us together. God’s love never runs out. God never tires of calling us

beloved children. Hear God say to you now: Your sins are forgiven, for the sake of

☩ Jesus Christ our Savior.

Amen.

ENTRANCE HYMN

ELW #819 Come All You People

GREETING

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the

Holy Spirit be with you.

And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.

(Silence)

Almighty God, by grace alone you call us and accept us in your service. Strengthen

us by your Spirit, and make us worthy of your call, through Jesus Christ, our Savior

and Lord.

Amen.

WORD

FIRST LESSON: Jonah 3:1-5, 10

The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to

Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah

set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now

Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. Jonah began to

go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and

Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of Nineveh believed God; they

proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.

When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God

changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them;

and he did not do it.

Holy wisdom, holy word.

Thanks be to God.

PSALM 62 Please sing the following refrain at the direction of the cantor.

5

GOSPEL: Mark 1:14-20

The Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark.

Glory to you, O Lord.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of

God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near;

repent, and believe in the good news.”

As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew

casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them,

“Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their

nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee

and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he

called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and

followed him.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

SECOND LESSON: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31

Brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even

those who have wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as

though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not

rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, and those who

deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of

this world is passing away.

Holy wisdom, holy word.

Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please sing the following refrain at the direction of the cantor.

Choir sings the verse:

The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God has come near; repent and believe in the good news.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Response: Hear our prayer.

SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

PARISH CONCERNS

MEAL

PREPARATION OF THE TABLE AND OFFERING OF GIFTS

8:30 This Little Light of Mine arranged by John Helgen

11:00 I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say James Biery

OFFERING PRAYER

Let us pray.

(Silence)

Merciful God, receive the gifts we bring, our selves, our time, and our possessions. Through this meal unite us as your body, shining with the light of your justice and

mercy; for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

7

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places

give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus

Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious

resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of

angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and

join their unending hymn:

8

Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father:

Endless is your mercy and eternal your reign. You have filled all creation with light

and life; heaven and earth are full of your glory.

We praise you for the grace shown to your people in every age:

the promise to Israel, the rescue from Egypt, the gift of the promised land, the

words of the prophets; and, at this end of all the ages, the gift of your Son, who

proclaimed the good news in word and deed and was obedient to your will, even

to giving his life.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for

you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s

death until he comes.

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

Therefore, O God, with this bread and cup we remember the life our Lord offered

for us. And, believing the witness of his resurrection, we await his coming in power

to share with us the great and promised feast.

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Send now, we pray, your Holy Spirit, that we who share in Christ’s body and blood

may live to the praise of your glory and receive our inheritance with all your saints

in light.

Amen. Come, Holy Spirit.

Join our prayers with those of your servants of every time and every place, and

unite them with the ceaseless petitions of our great high priest until he comes as

victorious Lord of all. Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, now and forever.

Amen.

9

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,

your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily

bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save

us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the

power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND INVITATION TO THE TABLE The Presider breaks the bread in silence and says:

We who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. The gifts of

God for the people of God.

All are welcome to meet the Risen Jesus in the sharing of bread and cup. Please come forward to

gather around the rails at the direction of the ushers. You may dip the bread into the red wine or

white grape juice, or drink directly from the cup. Gluten-free wafers are available. Ask the server.

Those who do not commune are invited and welcome to come forward for a blessing.

Ministers are available in the Chapel directly located across the altar area for healing

prayers and anointing. If you would like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidentially

for any need, the minister will pray with you.

Agnes, martyr, died

around 304

Sunday, January 21,

2018

Agnes was a girl of about

thirteen living in Rome.

The details of her martyr-

dom are not clear, but she

gave witness to her faith

and was put to death as a

result, most likely by the

sword. The church has

honored her as one of the

chief martyrs of her time.

Conversion of Paul

Thursday, January 25, 2018

The week of prayer begun by the

remembrance of Peter's confession

now comes to an end as we recall the

pivotal moment in the life of the oth-

er pillar of the early church, the

apostle Paul. His encounter with the

risen Christ turned him from perse-

cutor of the followers of Christ to

one of their leaders.

Timothy, Titus, and Silas,

missionaries

Friday, January 26, 2018

These three early Christian

men were missionary com-

panions of the apostle

Paul. Timothy became

bishop of Ephesus, Titus

bishop of Crete, and Silas

was imprisoned with Paul

at Philippi until they were

delivered by an earth-

quake.

Lydia, Dorcas, and Phoebe, wit-

nesses to the faith

Saturday, January 27, 2018

Women as well as men were im-

portant Christian leaders from the

beginning, as demonstrated by these

coworkers of the apostle Paul. Lydia,

a seller of purple goods, lent her

home for a church; Dorcas was

known for charitable works; and

Phoebe was a deacon in the church at

Cenchrae.

Aurora Commons Meal Teams Invite You to Participate

The Mary’s Place Rotating Shelter program has ended. The program has

grown incredibly since its beginning -- and with more overnight options for

women and children, this model of shelter has become obsolete. With

gratitude to everyone on the team, we end this incredible ministry. But as the

saying goes, “when one door closes, another opens” so I’m also excited to

announce new outreach opportunities are emerging at Phinney Ridge

Lutheran Church!

You got an introduction to Aurora Commons at Christmas, when we

asked you to donate hats and gloves. It’s a “living room” community

founded by Awake Church at 89th & Aurora, where they focus on the values

of offering: a hospitable space; a place where strangers become friends,

where societal norms are challenged and vulnerability is welcomed;

accompanying & connecting, and opportunities to call out folks’ beauty,

their gifts, and gently asks them to dream.

We are forming a Fourth Sunday Community Meal Team for Aurora

Commons and invite you to “Count Me In” (insert in your bulletin) to join us. If

you enjoy cooking and baking and serving hungry folks--we’d love to have

your help. Our team (and a generous donation from the PRLC Outreach

fund for AC staffing) is enabling Aurora Commons to expand their service

hours by one Sunday evening per month and they’re very excited about

that. Learn more about them at: www.auroracommons.org

The details: Eight ‘fourth-Sundays’ in 2018 (5:30-7:00pm) we will provide a

delicious Community Meal (buffet style for 50) in the Aurora Commons “living

room” at 8914 Aurora Ave N (Greenwood Senior Center will provide the

other 4 monthly meals). Here are the 2018 dates: Jan 28, Mar 25, April 22,

June 24, July 22, Sept 23, Oct 28, Dec 23. We will have a Volunteer Training

at Aurora Commons on Tues 1/23 from 6-7pm. Signe will provide a veggie

pizza for those coming directly from work.

There is also an existing Second Wednesday Aurora Commons ‘Women’s

Night’ Meal Team seeking new volunteers. They prepare a meal on the

second Wednesday of each month for 50 women. It is coordinated by

Tiffany Megargee. So if you want to be on both teams, or a Wednesday

night works better for you, or that group meets your needs better, please

indicate on your “Count Me In” (bulletin insert) to be added to the email list.

God’s work--our hands.

In Christ, Signe Roscoe & Tiffany Megargee

Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at

home among us.

Welcome Visitors

As people made one in the waters of baptism, we believe our lives of faith are strengthened by diversity. We strive to be a community that welcomes all people. We celebrate God’s unconditional love and respond joyfully to

your presence here. All are welcome. You are welcome.

Nursery A staffed nursery is available

for children from birth through age 5

on the sanctuary level down the hall

past the drinking fountain. Please sign

your child in and out of nursery care.

Usually parents gather their children

before communion so that they can

come to the Table together. An usher

will be glad to direct you. (If you prefer to have your child with you in worship, but are worried that they might dis-turb the service, we also have a crying room upstairs in the balcony. You will be able to hear and see most of the ser-vice there.)

Restrooms are located on the sanctu-

ary level just past the library. In addi-

tion to Men’s and Women’s rooms

there is also a Family room with a

changing table.

Count Me In Form is that little slip of

paper in your worship folder. We ask

all worshipers to complete this each

week. Special prayer requests may be

made on the back of the form and if

there are special “sign ups” you can do

that on the back. Place it in the offer-

ing plate as it is circulated during the

service.

Grace Station is an outreach of the

church office available every Sunday

morning. Office Manager Christina

Bogar (or a volunteer) is there to pro-

vide information about our church and

to receive information such as address,

phone or email changes, prayer re-

quests and news about illness or hospi-

talizations. Current newsletters and

program information are located there.
