What does division mean to you? How do we use division in the real world?

Thoughts to ponder….

Division is splitting into equal parts or groups

There are 3 ways to think about division:

Division as the Opposite of

Multiplication

Division as Sharing Division as Repeated Subtraction

Find 16 2.

Put your multiplication facts to work.

Think…What number times 2 equals 16?

2 x 8 = 16 so, 16 2 = 8.

Find 16 4.

Say you have 16 starburst candies and you want to share them with 4 if your friends. How many starbursts should each friend get?

Each friend will get 4 starbursts.

Find 16 8.

Subtract 8 from 16.Continue to subtract 8 until you reach zero.

16 – 8 = 88 – 8 = 8.

Now count how many times you subtracted: 2 times. So, 2 is the answer.

Joe has 270 hockey cards to arrange in 9 boxes. Each box is to hold the same number of cards. How many cards should he place in each box?
