The coalition forces have achieved military success in Yemen, supporting the military operations of the Yemeni army and dealing a heavy blow to Houthi militia, Colonel Turki Al-Malki, the spokesman for the coalition in support of legitimacy in Yemen, has said.

During a weekly press conference held at the headquarters of King Salman Air Force Base in Riyadh in the presence of a number of military commanders in the Coalition forces, he said that the Coalition forces are

    dealing with legitimate military targets.

He stressed that humanitarian work is being carried out around the clock by Coalition forces themselves or through the permits being granted by relief agencies.

He further said that possession of qualitative weapons by Houthi terrorist militia poses a threat to international, regional and Yemeni security, stressing that the international community has a responsibility to stop the smuggling of such weapons to Houthi terrorist group.

    Colonel Al-Malki also said

that the coalition forces have discussed with the respective authorities how to implement

a new mechanism, filling the gaps in the old mechanisms used in the relief operations

which contributed to the entry of weapons to Al-Houthi militia.

He stressed that the humanitarian work is carried out around the clock through the coalition forces themselves or through the permits being granted by relief agencies, stressing the Coalition’s commitment to provide all the assistance necessary to the Yemeni people, commending the military operations inside Yemen through the Yemeni army and the resistance forces, contributing to fully clearing Shabwa governorate with the support of coalition forces to provide air cover.

On Houthi losses, Colonel Al-Malki said that the coalition forces have received a large number of contacts who can provide information on the movements of Houthi militia’s leaders stressing that they have alreadya lot of information on a number of Houthi militia leaders and their movements.

In a warning to Houthi militia, Al-Malki said that they have only two options: peace or war and as for peace, it means that Al-Houthi militia must hand over power to legitimacy and commit to international laws in favour of Yemen, while the second option is war.

U.S. President Donald Trump yesterday said he was “very disappointed that China is allowing oil to go into North Korea” and that such moves would prevent “a friendly solution” to the crisis over Pyongyang’s nuclear program.

“Caught RED HANDED - very disappointed that China is allowing oil to go into North Korea. There will never be a friendly solution to the North Korea problem if this continues to happen!” Trump wrote in a post on Twitter.

China earlier on Thursday said there had been no U.N. sanction-breaking oil sales by Chinese ships to North Korea after a South Korean

newspaper said Chinese and North Korean vessels had been illicitly linking up at sea to get oil to North Korea.

The Trump administration has led a drive to step up global sanctions on North Korea in response to Pyongyang’s efforts to develop nuclear-tipped missiles capable of hitting the United States.

Washington says the full cooperation of China, North Korea’s neighbor and main trading partner, is vital to the success of this effort, while warning that all options are on the table, including military ones, in dealing with North Korea.

    The U.N. Security Council

last week unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea for a recent intercontinental ballistic missile test, seeking to further limit its access to refined petroleum products and crude oil.

The U.N. resolution seeks to ban nearly 90 percent of refined petroleum exports to North Korea by capping them at 500,000 barrels a year.

The U.S.-drafted resolution also caps crude oil supplies to North Korea at 4 million barrels a year and commits the Council to further reductions if North Korea were to conduct another nuclear test or launch another ICBM.

    Documents seen by

Reuters this month showed Washington called on the Security Council to blacklist 10 ships for circumventing sanctions by conducting ship-to-ship transfers of refined petroleum products to North Korean vessels or transporting North Korean coal.

China and Russia subsequently asked for more time to consider the proposal.

In September, the Security Council put a cap of 2 million barrels a year on refined petroleum products exports to North Korea.

China has repeatedly said it is fully enforcing all resolutions against North Korea, despite suspicion in Washington, Seoul and Tokyo that loopholes still exist.

Asked at a regular briefing whether Chinese ships were illegally providing oil to North Korean ships, Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang reiterated that China, including the military, strictly enforced U.N. resolutions.

“The situation you have mentioned absolutely does not exist,” he said.

South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo newspaper this week quoted South Korean government sources as saying that spy satellites had detected 30 instances of ship-to-ship transfers to North Korean vessels since October.

A U.S. State Department official suggested on Wednesday that such transfers

could still be going on.“Ship-to-ship transfers

... remain a concern as part of North Korea’s sanctions evasions activities,” the official said, while declining to provide details.

State Department spokesman, Michael Cavey, reiterated on Wednesday that the United States had called on all countries to cut economic ties with North Korea.

“We urge China to end all economic ties with the DPRK, including tourism, and the provision of any oil or petroleum products, and expel all DPRK workers,” he said, using the acronym for North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. -Reuters

The High Criminal Court yesterday postponed the trial of Ali Salman Ali Ahmed, the former head of the now-dissolved Al Wefaq Society, Hasan Ali Juma Sultan and Ali Mahdi Ali Al Aswad who are suspected of spying for Qatar, to January 4.

Advocate General Osama Al Oufi said the court decided in its third review of the case in a public hearing to call for the postponement to listen to the testimonies of the third and fourth witnesses as requested by the lawyers and to hand over a copy of all the documents and CDs related to the case. Both witnesses are covered by the witness protection programme.

Ali Salman, Hassan Sultan and Ali Al Aswad are being tried on charges of spying for a foreign country to carry out subversive acts against Bahrain and undermine its political and economic status and its national interests in order to topple the regime.

Other charges include passing on defence secrets to a foreign country, accepting money from a foreign country in exchange for supplying military secrets and information related to the internal situation in the country, and broadcasting news and false and malicious rumours abroad to weaken financial trust in the kingdom and undermine its

status. The public prosecution said the charges are based on evidence gathered from the testimonies of witnesses and recorded telephone conversations between Ali Salman and Hassan Sultan with Qatari officials that included agreements and coordination between the two sides to carry out subversive acts against Bahrain.

The public prosecution added it relied for evidence on Qatar’s record of activities targeting Arab countries, mainly Bahrain, and its use of media to incite people against the political regimes in these countries while having close contacts with nationals opposed to their countries, such as the Bahraini suspects in the case.

Bangladesh has a huge potential for trade and investment, particularly for Bahrain, said Muhammad Abdul Mannan, Minister of State for Finance & Planning of Bangladesh, yesterday.

Two-way trade and investment is almost non-existent at the moment, Mannan told DT News in an interview yesterday. He said that pharmaceutical and textiles industry are areas that Bangladesh could help Bahrain with.

“In Bangladesh the private sector is now in total control, 90 per cent of the economy is of the private sector. There are many areas that Bahrain and Bangladesh could collaborate in, such as the medical sector especially the pharmaceutical industry, which is growing fast

in Bangladesh. ICT sector is also an area we could cooperate in,” Mannan who is currently in Bahrain on an official visit, said.

“Bahrain can also import textiles from us, we are the top country in the world for it. We could send seafood, vegetables etc to Bahrain. I have met with the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry officials today, they said that in the next two to three months, a trade delegation from Bahrain could visit Bangladesh,” he added.

Minister of Finance, Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa met Mannan earlier in the day. “We spoke about our trade and investment relationship and how we can go further,” he said.

“I briefed the Minister about the issues of Rohingya, because we are housing a million Rohingya, bearing expenses related to feeding

them and taking care of them and it’s not something that is easy for a country like Bangladesh. The Minister agreed that more needs to be done for the Rohingya. He said that more steps could be taken through the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation,” he added.

“We also spoke about the issue of terrorism and how it affects the muslim nations. It is a menace that we need to tackle,” she said.

    He also met members of

the Bangladeshi community. “They mentioned that the embassy is not very spacious and it needs improvements. They want a bigger and better embassy building. There is also a strong need of building a school for the community, we have a school but the space is not enough. I was told that the Bahrain government has offered a piece of land so we need to build a school there. The community has asked funding from the government for this,” he said.

Birth anniversary of ‘Quaid-e-Azam’ celebratedDT News NetworkManama

The Pakistani community has celebrated the birth anniversary of the nation’s founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah at the Pakistan Club Bahrain. Pakistan Ambassador Javed Malik was the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Javed Malik paid rich tributes to the life and contributions of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah and said that “Quaid-e-Azam was one of the greatest leaders of this century who led the Muslims of South Asia in their journey towards an independent homeland.

He said that after qualifying as a Barrister from the prestigious Lincolns Inn of the United Kingdom, Jinnah established himself as one of the most promising and distinguished lawyers of his time. He stood tall among his contemporaries and became one of the most iconic figures in the independence movement.

He said that Mohammed Ali Jinnah’s principles of Unity, Faith and Discipline remain as relevant today as they were at the time of creation of Pakistan. He urged the Pakistani community to make a pledge to follow on the footsteps of

Mohammad Ali Jinnah in building a progressive and prosperous nation state in line with the vision of our great founding father.

The Ambassador said that not only Pakistanis but the leading academics, historians and intellectuals around the world have acknowledged Mohammed Ali Jinnah as one of the most dynamic, visionary and accomplished leaders of modern times, and quoted the words of famous American historian, Stanley Wolpert, who while appreciating Jinnah said, “Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three,” – Stanley Wolpert.

Malik said the government of Pakistan remains committed to the ideals of our great founding father, and today Pakistan is established itself as a progressive Muslim country which stands tall in the comity of nations. The ceremony was attended by leading members of the Pakistani Community and as well as Members of Parliament, Ahmed Qarata, Ali Bufursan, Chairman Pakistan Club Rehan Ahmed and other members of the community including ladies forum of the Pakistan Club Bahrain.

What? Gone already?Another seventeen years, after the year 2000?But, wasn’t it just yesterday that we were all suffering from

that millennium madness? The Y2K bug had bitten my generation so deep that the

midnight-meeting of the clock’s hands after December 31, 1999, seemed like an amazing festive occasion to some, and an awfully frightening occasion to others.

Doomsday diviners had decreed a disaster that night. Frequent flyers were frightened to fly that night. Computing experts cried of computer crashes that night. But the night passed off without any note-worthy anomaly.

Revellers at bars and nightclubs partied that night, families and friends frolicked that night, guests at hotels and resorts celebrated that night. Like it’s the best they’d ever see.

But that night slipped away, into history, very smoothly. In fact, 17 more New Year’s eves slipped away, the same way.Which makes us wonder if there is anything special about

any particular date? After all, a calendar is a calendar is a calendar. Isn’t it?

Perhaps, it is. But we know that different parts of the world follow different calendars based on the sun, the moon, or the stars.

For some, the New Year begins with the onset of spring. For some, it is the arrival of rains.

The Year 2017, that will end in a couple of days, we know, is based on the Gregorian calendar, a solar calendar, of 12 months.

And, since the earth takes exactly 365 days plus a quarter-of-a-day, to complete one revolution around the sun, the four quarters became an extra day in the leap-year.

This Gregorian calendar, actually, corrected and replaced the Julian calendar, in 1582, when, by a papal decree, Pope Gregory XIII announced it. And this “New Style” calendar made up for the old one’s deficiencies.

Named after Julius Caesar, the “Old Style” calendar had been in use from 45 BC to 1582 AD.

Incidentally, BC (Before Christ) is now termed BCE (Before Common Era) and AD (Anno Domini) is now termed CE (Common Era).

When “New Style” calendar was adopted, ten days from the month of October in 1582 were actually dropped! And Leap Years were introduced.

However, the newly apparent accuracy was not accepted quickly. Great Britain and her colonies adopted the Gregorian, or “new style” calendar, only in 1752. Some countries, such as China – which follows a lunisolar calendar - did not adopt it until the 1900s.

The Jewish, or Hebrew, calendar is primarily lunar and is not the same length as the Gregorian calendar.

Year numbers on the Jewish calendar represent the number of years since creation, calculated by adding up the ages of people, in the Bible, back to the time of creation.

So, on the Jewish calendar, we are now going through AM 5778. Where AM, or ‘Anno Mundi’, means “Year of the World”, or the “Year After Creation”.

Hijri, or the Islamic, calendar of twelve months is also based on the lunar cycle.

According to the Qur’an, Allah has ordained it that way. In his final sermon before his death, Islam’s final prophet is said to have stated, “With Allah, the months are twelve; four of them are holy; three of these are successive and one occurs singly between the months of Jumaada and Sha’ban.”

The National Calendar of India uses the Shaka/Saka Era (78 AD = year 0).

The new Gregorian year ‘2018’ will, therefore, have the Hijri years of 1439-40, the Jewish years of 5778-79, and Saka years of 1939-40, and perhaps many more!

But, let’s keep on planning the New Year celebrations. If we can only use the various calendars, we can party all year round!

About $100 billion is required to rebuild Mosul and other areas of northern and western Iraq after three years of war devastated much of the area, the Iraqi government has said.

The money is especially needed in Mosul, where hardly a single building is intact for more than two miles along the western bank of the Tigris River. Officials have warned of a rebirth of militancy if the cash is not forthcoming.

The warren of narrow streets of Mosul’s Old City is a crumpled landscape of broken concrete, metal and other debris. Every acre is weighed down by more than 3,000 tons of rubble, much of it laced with explosives and unexploded ordnance.

It will take years to remove the wreckage following the success of the Iraqi military and the U.S.-led coalition in uprooting the Islamic State group from the country. But the trouble is that no -one is

Putin says Saint Petersburg blast was ‘act of terror’

    Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday said an explosion that tore through a Saint Petersburg supermarket, wounding 13 people, was an act of terror, as footage of the suspected bomber spread on the internet.

Speaking at a meeting with military officers in the Kremlin, Putin ordered the nation’s security services to “act decisively” and “liquidate bandits on the spot” if armed militants put up resistance.

His spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters later that the Russian leader was referring to all those “who harbour plans to carry out acts of terror in our country.”

On Wednesday evening, a homemade bomb placed in a locker at the supermarket in northwestern Saint Petersburg, Russia’s second city and Putin’s hometown, exploded.

“As you know, an act of terror took place

in Saint Petersburg yesterday,” Putin said at a ceremony to award officers who took part in the Syria campaign.

Those wounded in the attack included a 35-year-old pregnant woman.

Putin’s 2015 decision to intervene in Syria militarily on the side of Bashar al-Assad has made Russia a priority target for the Islamic State group.

Anna Mityanina, vice governor of Saint Petersburg, said on Twitter that six people remain in hospital care.

The bomb came after the FSB security service said earlier this month it had prevented a terror attack on a key Orthodox cathedral in Saint Petersburg with the help of America’s CIA, which led Putin to thank US President Donald Trump.

The explosion occurred at around 1845 local time (1545 GMT) as people geared up to

celebrate the New Year -- the country’s biggest holiday -- followed by Russian Orthodox Christmas, which falls on January 7.

Officials said the bomb had power equivalent to 200 grammes of TNT.

The investigation is being overseen by Russia’s National Anti-Terror Committee even though authorities initially opened a probe into attempted murder.

The committee said the explosion went off after “a criminal placed an unidentified explosive device in a storage locker.”

Footage posted online by local media showed a man -- who did not appear Slavic and wore a hooded jacket -- enter the supermarket with a backpack and leave without it a short time afterwards.

Top French jihadist held by Syrian KurdsParis

One of France’s most-wanted jihadists, Thomas Barnouin, has been captured by Kurdish YPG rebel fighters in Syria, French media report.

Barnouin, 36, is believed to be linked to a French jihadist cell that included Mohamed Merah, who murdered seven people in the Toulouse area in 2012.

Barnouin was captured about 10 days ago in Hassakeh, north-eastern Syria, with two other French converts to Islam - Romain Garnier and Thomas Collange.

They were with so-called Islamic State.

Barnouin is described as a veteran IS member, who had been arrested by Syrian soldiers in 2006 while en route to Iraq with another French jihadist, Sabri Essid.

After being handed over to the French authorities, both were jailed for five years in 2009. But after his release in 2014, Barnouin went to fight for IS in Syria, accompanied by his wife and children.

A third jihadist was also jailed in France with Barnouin

and Essid - Fabien Clain, who claimed the November 2015 Paris attacks in the name of IS.

They were in the so-called “Artigat” jihadist cell, named after a village where an extremist imam, Olivier Correl, gathered militant followers. He is believed to have inspired Mohamed Merah.

The French government says about 1,700 French citizens have joined IS ranks in Iraq and Syria since the start of 2014, and 278 of them have been killed. An estimated 302 have returned to France. (BBC)

Turkey detains 38 Islamic State suspects

2 Saudi princes released from detention

    Istanbul

Turkish police detained 38 people, some of them Syrian citizens, over suspected links to Islamic State in an operation on Thursday in the northwestern province of Bursa, the state-run Anadolu news agency said.

Counter-terrorism police carried out simultaneous raids on homes in various districts of Bursa, smashing doors open with battering rams and searching the properties, it said.

Islamic State militants have carried out gun and bomb attacks in Turkey. Many foreign fighters passed through Turkey in recent years on their way to join the jihadist group in territory it controlled in Syria and Iraq.

A year ago, the group claimed responsibility for a New Year’s Day mass shooting by a lone gunman who killed 39 people in a packed Istanbul nightclub. A trial of those allegedly behind the attack began this month. (Reuters)

    Riyadh

Two sons of Saudi Arabia’s late King Abdullah have been released from detention at Riyadh’s Ritz-Carlton hotel, days after nearly two dozen other detainees in the kingdom’s two-month-old anti-corruption campaign were also freed.

Saudi Arabia’s attorney general approved the release of Prince Meshaal bin Abdullah and Prince Faisal bin Abdullah after they reached financial settlements with the government, a senior Saudi official with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

The source did not elaborate on the settlements.

The attorney general had not yet reached a decision on whether to release a third brother, Prince Turki bin Abdullah, the source said.

A related member of the royal family, Princess Nouf bint Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud, tweeted photos of the two princes and exclamations of thanks on Thursday. (Reuters)

  • As mentioned before, sell-offs of cryptocurrency are usually massive and may be up to 75% from the previous growth trend, as with Ether. Bitcoin is less volatile lately – a correc-tion may be 30-50%, while Litecoin may lose about 50-61.8% when it’s bear-ish. But because of that, these cryptocurrencies look very attractive to traders as they are able to gain their value back very quickly. As history shows,

    such selloffs may happen 1-3

    times a year.

US and South Korean delegates will meet in Washington on January 5 for talks on possible amendments to their free trade agreement. The Trump administration initiated talks to renegotiate the United States-Korea free trade agreement in July, arguing the 2012 deal was lopsided because American’s bilateral trade deficit had ballooned under it. Oil prices dipped on Thursday but stayed close to their highest in 2-1/2 years, as data showed strong demand for crude imports in China and on increased refining activity in the United States that drew more crude from inventories.

US, S.Korea to hold trade talks next week Oil prices stay near high “Algorithms for airline fares aren’t written by god in the heavens. Companies can’t hide behind algorithms.”

    Germany’s Federal Cartel Office president

While several years ago, traders were making orders to buy or sell when cryptocur-rency was fluctuating by several dollars, now the price of one cryptocurrency may rise or fall by hundreds of dollars in a day. The profits and losses now look more dramatic than ever. However, traders still have a chance to take profit on cryptocurrency price fluctuation, but with caution.

Choose a cryptocurrency you want to start trading. Then divide its position in several equal lots (the amount of tokens to buy), and enter in trade with this lot once in two weeks. Remember, it is important that each lot was the same amount; otherwise you won’t be able to find the

    average price.

Find the aver-age price The average volatility of a crypto

assets is much higher than the volatility of traditional financial assets. It gives us good potential to get a better profit. However, there is also a risk to see deep retracement before the price moves in our desired direction. Thus, it’s worth limiting potential losses from the trade by setting a stop loss level. And it’s very impor-tant to calculate the right level. In cases with crypto currencies it should be not less than three

times the daily fluctuation in percentage

    points.

Mind the volatility When it falls, it falls

Cryptocurrency seasonalityStrange as it may seem, the his-tory from 2011 to 2017 shows that since late February to late August Bitcoin stays mostly in a downtrend, and since September till December it is usually in an uptrend. That’s probably somehow connect-ed with rising business activ-ity after summer and more ICOs launches.

Cryptocurrency correlationCryptocurrencies often have inverse correlation with USD and direct correlation with the Euro, American stock indi-ces and gold. For example, correlation of Bitcoin and the Euro in 2017 is 92.2%, with Dow Jones it is up to 86.6%, and with gold it is 48.7%. It means whenever Bitcoins falls, but Euro, gold and US stocks rise or stagnate, it is the sign the selloff of Bitcoin may have a temporary speculative nature, and a U-turn is imminent.

Apple and Amazon are in licensing discussions with Riyadh on investing in Saudi Arabia, two sources told Reuters, part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s push to give the conservative kingdom a high-tech look.

A third source confirmed that Apple was in talks with SAGIA, Saudi Arabia’s foreign investment authority.

Both companies already sell products in Saudi Arabia via third parties but they and other tech giants have yet to establish a direct presence.

Amazon’s discussions are being led by cloud computing division Amazon Web Services (AWS), which would introduce stiff competition in a market currently dominated by smaller local providers like STC and Mobily.

Riyadh has been easing regulatory impediments for the past two years, including limits on foreign ownership which had long kept investors away, since falling crude prices highlighted the need to diversify its oil-dependent economy.

    Luring Apple and Amazon

would further Prince Mohammed’s reform plans and raise the companies’ profile in a young and relatively affluent market, which already boasts some of the highest internet and smartphone use in the world.

About 70 per cent of the Saudi population is under 30 and frequently glued to social media.

A licensing agreement for Apple stores with SAGIA is expected by February, with an initial retail store targeted for 2019, said two sources familiar with the discussions.

Amazon’s talks are in earlier stages and no specific date has been set for investment plans, they said.

    Lengthy courtshipWhile Saudi reform

plans call for luring foreign investment broadly across sectors, officials have courted Silicon Valley players especially strongly over the past two years to complement their high-tech ambitions.

Prince Mohammed is an avowed technophile and has styled himself a disrupter in the model of Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates.

    During an official visit to

the United States last year he met executives at Facebook, Microsoft and Uber, in which the sovereign wealth fund he chairs later took a $3.5 billion stake.

Since then, he has also set up a $45 billion technology investment fund with Japan’s SoftBank and announced plans to create a futuristic $500 billion mega-city with more robots than humans.

Apple and Amazon have both been on a Saudi priority list of foreign firms which officials hope to attract to further their reforms, one of the sources said.

“Many tech multinationals now in Saudi Arabia are either vendors to the Saudi government or, in the case of Uber, have benefited from a sizable Saudi investment,” said Sam Blatteis, who heads Dubai-based tech advisory MENA Catalysts Inc.

“Amazon entering the Saudi market would be a step-change.”

For Amazon, the move underscores how AWS is looking to take an early lead in selling data storage and computing services to customers in the Middle East. (Reuters)

TVM Capital Healthcare Partners, a Dubai-based private equity business, has launched a $250 million fund to invest in areas ranging from cancer to pharmaceuticals in markets including the Gulf, Turkey, Egypt, India and Singapore, a senior executive said.

The company plans to make the investments over the next two years, with the first deal scheduled to close in the second half of 2018, said Charles Floe, operating partner.

TVM Capital Healthcare has targeted markets it thinks offer accelerated growth in healthcare development and spending, underpinned by

some of the fastest growing economies.

“We think this is a fantastic time to invest as over the next four to six years we see the macro environment for healthcare in our chosen target markets as very positive and with relative stability in regulations and geopolitics, the opportunities we see in the healthcare industry will play themselves out,” he said.

TVM Capital Healthcare has to date led investments close to $150 million, mainly in the Gulf, in areas including long-term care, rehabilitation, home care, fertility treatment and medical devices. (Reuters)

    Dubai

United Arab Emirates stock markets rose yesterday, their last day of trade during a year in which they were among the world’s worst-performing emerging markets, while most other Middle Eastern bourses also gained.

Dubai’s stock index fell 4.6 per cent during 2017 while Abu Dhabi’s index lost 3.3pc; MSCI’s emerging markets index gained about 34pc.

Some fund managers expect a better 2018; regional growth is likely to pick up on the back of expansionary state budgets, as the partial rebound of oil prices late this year gives Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi room to loosen austerity policies, and Dubai spends heavily to prepare for hosting Expo 2020.

The Dubai index rose 0.7pc yesterday, buoyed in part by construction firms that could benefit from higher government spending on

infrastructure next year.Drake & Scull rose 2.7pc to

2.26 dirhams in heavy trade. It posted a big third-quarter loss but investors are hoping for much better fourth-quarter results now that a recapitalisation has been completed, which may help it obtain operating funds.

Some analysts believe the stock, which has jumped from around 1.70 dirhams in mid-November, is overvalued, however; earlier this month, Deutsche Bank cut it to “sell” from “hold” with a 1.13 dirham target price.

Builder Arabtec gained 0.9pc after saying a unit had won a 1.025 billion dirham ($279 million) contract from Dubai Properties, part of the investment vehicle of Dubai’s ruler, for work on a residential community.

Dubai property developers were also strong, with blue chip Emaar Properties climbing 2.4pc.

    Abu Dhabi’s index added

0.7pc, helped by companies which could benefit directly from this week’s surge of oil prices: Dana Gas rose 2.5pc and fuel distributor ADNOC Distribution gained 1.5pc.

Most other Middle Eastern stock markets will trade for the last time in 2017 on Sunday. In Saudi Arabia, the index rose 0.4pc yesterday as most petrochemical firms stayed strong in the wake of the oil price increase.

Sahara Petrochemical jumped 3.6pc after proposing

a dividend of 1 riyal per share for 2017, up from 0.75 riyal for 2016.

Al Samaani Factory Metal Industries soared 9.5pc after proposing a capital increase through a bonus share issue, and an annual dividend of 1.5 riyal per share.

Qatar’s index rose 0.3pc as Vodafone Qatar, which shot up by more than a third between mid-November and the start of this week, resumed rising in volatile trade and closed 0.9pc higher. (Reuters)

    UAE markets rise at yearend

SAUDI ARABIA gained 0.4pc to 7,231 points.

DUBAI rose 0.7pc to 3,370 points.

ABU DHABI climbed 0.7pc to 4,398 points.

QATAR gained 0.3pc to 8,526 points.

EGYPT rose 0.8pc to 15,017 points.

KUWAIT added 0.6pc to 6,408 points.

Eat twelve grapes at midnight. The Spanish and Portuguese eat twelve grapes as the clock chimes twelve times for midnight, to symbolize the twelve months of the new year. Incidentally, eating grapes this quickly is not as easy as it may sound.

Seek out ring-shaped food for break-fast. Consider bagels or doughnuts for breakfast (don’t you always?), which represent not only carby deliciousness, but also the year coming full circle.

Smash a pomegranate on the floor. (And waste a perfectly good piece of fruit?) In Greece, when the new year turns, a pomegranate is smashed on the floor in front of the door to break it open and reveal seeds symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. The more seeds, the more luck.

Roast whole fish for lunch. Fish are lucky in three ways: their scales resemble coins, they trav-el in schools, which represents prosperity, and they swim for-ward, symbolizing progress. This option has the added benefit of complying with whatever New Year’s dietary resolutions you’ve likely made.

Slurp soba noodles without breaking them. In Japan, long buckwheat noodles symbolize long life, and are therefore lucky—but only if you eat them without chew-ing or breaking them. So get your slurping technique down.

Whip up a batch of Hoppin’ John. This dish of black-eyed peas and rice is customary for New Year’s Day in the American south, where black-eyed peas are considered auspicious based on their resem-blance to coins.

Cook some lentils. Can you guess what lentils resemble? Money! Yes, these coin-shaped legumes are lucky in Brazil and Italy, and are said to have been eaten for luck since the Roman times.

Bake a coin into a cake. The second Greek tradition on our list, this involves a spe-cial lemon-flavored cake called a vasilopita baked with a coin inside (again with the money!). Whoever finds the coin gets a year of good luck. That, or a chipped tooth.

Nosh on greens. They resemble paper money, and who doesn’t want more money next year? Everything from cabbage to kale to your Mesclun salad mix applies here.

MethodStep 1In a medium sized bowl, sprinkle a little water along with 1/2 tsp chaat masala, garam masala powder, cumin powder, 1/2 tsp red chili powder, baking powder, salt, turmeric powder and gram flour. Mix these ingredients well.

Step 2Add raw peanuts and 2 tbsp oil to the same bowl. Add more water if required, but make sure the paste is thick. Now, add these peanuts to the hot oil in a kadhai and deep fry them till they turn golden brown on medium flame.

Step 3Once they turn golden brown, drain these on a layer or paper towels in order to soak the extra oil. Sprinkle remaining chaat masala and red chili powder on it. Mix well and keep it aside. Allow it to cool. Now serve it.

Have you been thinking about remodelling or redecorating your home? If so, this is the day to do it. Your energy and aesthetic sense are high today. Enlist the aid of family members in planning colours, styles, and arrangements. A lot of activity may go on in and around your home, and you’ll be enthusiastic.

An unexpected visit or call from a friend could bring exciting news. You might decide to get together with this person and celebrate. Good fortune comes your way from an unforeseen source, but don’t waste time wondering about it. Make the most of it. Future successes may hinge upon it. By day’s end you might be aiming for entirely different goals.

The morning could find you somewhat worried about finances. Past reckless spending may be on your mind. Go through your records and look at them objectively. You’ll probably find that things aren’t as bad as they seem. Write down a plan for handling whatever does need attention. You’ll be able to take care of business.

Romance and marriage are always important to you, and today they’re especially so. You should feel particularly warm, loving, and attractive, and matters of love and partnership should be especially romantic. Today bodes well for other forms of partnership, as an increased level of understanding passes between you and others.

Today you feel especially imaginative, and you might want to try writing, painting, or composing. The past is especially appealing, so you may want to stroll through an art gallery or museum or attend a concert. Use your intuition, as it’s operating at a high level. Messages might come through art that bring insight and perhaps revelation.

You’re always intellectually curious, but today you might be especially so. Although you’re usually idealistic, today your imagination is in full swing. You might want to try writing or painting. It will be better to go with fiction or impressionism than history or realism. Study of spiritual or esoteric subjects is likely to clear a path between intellect and intuition.

Your usually dependable judgment may seem clouded by emotion today. Perhaps you’re unable to decide between different courses of action. Or perhaps you’re feeling distracted and can’t focus on what needs to be done. Don’t be afraid to put things off and work on something less taxing. Things will seem clearer tomorrow. Spend your day relaxing.

Optimism and foresight are important today, as you take charge of your life and seek new opportunities. Conversations lead to ideas for possible personal and career expansion, and you’re likely to send out and receive a number of messages. You could even be considering a move, perhaps to another city. Don’t rush. Plan carefully and all should work out as you wish.

Matters of love seem to be taking a turn for the better. Discuss your relationship with your partner. Your friend may or may not share your opinions, and a compromise may need to be reached. Don’t let this dampen your enthusiasm. Romance looks bright for the near future as long as you keep the lines of communication open.

New ideas and opportunities for advancing yourself financially may come your way today, yet this isn’t the day to act indiscriminately or make any definite changes in your financial structure. Your judgment may be a bit clouded. You could have difficulty deciding among different options. Write down all the information, study it, and sleep on it for a few nights.

Today, you may feel especially sociable. You might want to look up o
