FROM THE ExECuTIVE DIRECTOR

To our Community,

CJFS is here for YOu. That may seem an obvious statement for those of you touched by CJFS programs and services. Oftentimes, however, when I talk with community members they don’t realize who CJFS serves.

• CJFs is an expert in senior adult services. More than 60% of the 1300 people we serve annually are over age 60. When you include the family members of aging adults, the number is even higher. The combination of our programs, knowledge, resources, and experience gives us the leading edge in assisting seniors and their families navigate the journey of aging.

• CJFS serves people of all faiths. Since becoming an independent agency and a united Way Partner agency in 1990, CJFS has impacted Birmingham well beyond the Jewish community. Roughly half of the clients we serve each year are NOT Jewish. Based in the Jewish values of Tikkun Olam—Repairing the World and Kehillah—Community, it is important to CJFS that our agency be here for everyone.

• CJFS is here for those with financial means AND those without. It is well known that CJFS provides financial assistance and services to those who cannot afford to pay for them. It is equally important to note that we also assist those who can and do pay for the quality services we offer. Simply put, CJFS is the best resource for ALL people.

I invite YOu, regardless of faith or finances, to call upon CJFS when you are in need. Perhaps you are exploring living options for your mother, or are thinking about transportation options, or just need a caring ear to listen…CJFS is here for YOu!

sustaining independence & improving Quality of life• 50 disabled or senior adults received 4011 hours of In-Home Personal Care including

bathing & hygiene assistance, housekeeping, and meal preparation.

• 212 clients received 2421 hours of Case Management, working with members of our clinical staff to connect them to resources, coordinate their care, and meet their changing needs.

• 84 disabled or senior adults took 3841 rides on Buz-A-Bus to the doctor, the grocery store, work, recreational and volunteer activities, and other destinations.

• 263 senior adults and their caregivers received $59,311 in financial assistance for respite care, supplies, and Lifeline.

• 19 students participated in 103 English as a Second Language classes to improve their communication skills.

increasing access to healthcare• 1,126 rides on Buz-A-Bus brought clients to doctor appointments, rehab & physical

therapy, dialysis, and other medical destinations.

• 81 community members received FREE Medicare Part D consultations to determine which prescription drug plan was best for them, saving a total of $24,901.

• 19 community members utilized the Senior Care 911 emergency response system to assist them in case of emergency.

providing emotional support• 84 clients received 589 hours of Counseling to cope with the stresses of everyday life.

• 196 people participated in 59 Group Counseling sessions seeking support and guidance.

Creating a Jewish safety net• 65 clients received $27,020 in direct Financial Assistance to pay for rent, utilities, food,

fuel, prescription drugs, and other needs.

• 73 families kept food on their tables with groceries from our Food Closet.

• 5 families received $3200 in Scholarships to attend Jewish camps.

• 2 families unable to provide a Jewish Burial for their loved one, received burial plots and assistance with burial costs.

Building Community Connection• 48 seniors in residential facilities participated in our monthly Honor Our Parents

services, providing them a connection to the Jewish community.

• 225 Volunteers gave 1894 hours of meaningful service to CJFS acting as friendly visitors, teaching ESL classes, participating on board committees, preparing mailings, planning our Hands up Together event, creating Baskets of Blessings, and so many more activities that enable CJFS to broaden its reach & strengthen its impact.

• 2458 callers were given Information & Referral Services to connect to area resources outside of CJFS programs.
