أصدقاء الدار األعزاء،

أهال بكم يف فعاليات موسم “دار اآلثار اإلسالمية” الــ 21. لعلنا نكرر هذا القول قبيل بدء كل موسم جديد، لكن هذا املوسم يعد فعال هو األكرب واألكرث ثراء بالنشاطات عىل اإلطالق. لدينا الكثري من “الجديد” يف هذا املوسم، ابتداء من موقعنا الجديد يف ضاحية الريموك )تجدون الخارطة يف ص 92( الذي سوف يحتضن مجمل جدولنا الثقايف. كذلك سوف نحتفل بافتتاح خمسة معارض جديدة تتوزع عىل مدى املوسم، باإلضافة إىل إطالق ثالثة كتب حديثة، وتقديم أربعة برامج جديدة متكاملة لألطفال. يضاف ذلك كله إىل املحارضات و األمسيات املوسيقية و األفالم، و عديد من األنشطة

عالية املستوى والتي اعتدتم عىل متابعتها يف كل موسم ثقايف من مواسم الدار السابقة.

إن كل فعالية من هذه األنشطة متثل فرصة ذهبية للبحث واالستكشاف. وال شك يف أن موقعنا الجديد يف الريموك يوفر مساحة أكرب لتقديم عروضنا، وبالتايل الوصول إىل جمهور أكرب. كام ستتيح املعارض التي ستفتتح، والكتب الجديدة التي ستدشن، فرصة للزوار ملعرفة املزيد عن الفن و الثقافة يف بالد املسلمني. أما برامج األطفال التعليمية، فقد تم إعدادها

ملساعدة األطفال عىل اكتشاف متعة التعلم من خالل قراءة الكتب.

Dear Friends,

Welcome to DAI Cultural Season 21. I know you hear this often, but this really is going to be a bigger and better cultural season than ever before. We have lots of “new” this season, starting with our new facility in Yarmouk (directions on page 92). We’ll also open five new exhibitions, launch three new books, and introduce four new education programmes for children. And all that is in addition to the lectures, concerts, films and other activities you’ve come to expect from our cultural season.

Each of these new entities represents chances for exploration. The new space allows us to expand our offerings and reach a larger audience. Like the books, the new exhibitions will give visitors the chance to discover more about the art and culture of the Islamic world. The new children’s programmes were created to help your children discover the joy of books and reading.

I hope you will take a few minutes and look through this programme. You will quickly identify a myriad of dates that you want to put in your calendar and that’s a good thing. That means that we are fulfilling our goal of providing the community with new opportunities to learn, share and enjoy. And that’s what we care about most.

الكتاب والبورتريه”، وهو أحدث إصدارات دار اآلثار اإلسالمية، والذي يركز الفاريس: فنون يف مقدمة كتاب “التصوير عىل أحد جوانب “مجموعة الصباح اآلثارية”، يتحدث الشيخ نارص صباح األحمد الصباح عن املتع الجاملية، و املهارات اإلبداعية، و األحداث التاريخية املوثقة عرب الرسوم واللوحات الفنية الفارسية يف الفرتة ما بني 1073 – 1901م. وإذا ما

نظرنا إىل اهتاممات دار اآلثار اإلسالمية، ودورها التنويري، فإن تلك الصفات الثالث تنطبق عليها أيضا.

In the foreword to Persian Painting: The Arts of the Book and Portraiture, the latest book focusing on an aspect of The al-Sabah Collection, Sheikh Nasser Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah talks about the aesthetic pleasures, creative skills, and compelling histories which are found in Persian paintings from 1073 CE to 1901 CE. In thinking about the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah’s (DAI) 21st Cultural Season, the same three descriptions also apply.

Over the eight months from October to May, the DAI will host 32 lectures, 16 classic films, 33 concerts, 2 theatrical weekends, 8 family days, and 5 exhibitions. There will also be at least 3 book launches, 2 festivals, 124 children’s education opportunities, and 5 training sessions for volunteer docents.

On the pages that follow you will find information on all the activities mentioned in the previous paragraph. You will also find eight more images (in addition to the cover image) from Persian Painting. As you read about Monica Preti’s lecture Between Text and Image: Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso and its Influence on Arts; look closely at the October divider which features LNS 4 MS folio 209V Behram Gur in the Turquoise Pavilion; and put the Liszt Centenary Celebration concert on your calendar, see if you don’t agree that Sheikh Nasser’s words describing Persian paintings aren’t equally applicable to DAI’s Cultural Season 21.

Tuesday Nights promise to be exciting as the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah hosts its first full season of classic films. The 16 films selected for viewing span more than 60 years and include films from Europe, Asia, the US and the Middle East. Some will make you laugh; some will make you cry; and at least one will make you call your mother. All the films will be shown at Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah at Yarmouk Cultural Centre and will begin promptly at 7 PM.

and, best of all, the quality and diversity remain the same. All the performances will be held at Dar

al-Athar al-Islamiyyah at Yarmouk Cultural Centre and will begin promptly at 7 PM.

Ziad Sayid Rajab

Dr Ziad Rajab is a Tareq Rajab Museum board member, the director of the New English School and the director of a real estate business in Oman. He is a human resource specialist and is involved in the arts through media such as book binding, illumination, portraiture, oil painting and pottery as well as being an accomplished flautist. In addition to speaking at the DAI, he has presented at the Louvre Abu Dhabi Talking Art Series and associations in the United Kingdom and Kuwait.

Jehan Rajab and her role in the Tareq Rajab Museum

Jehan Rajab was heavily involved in the museum established by her husband, Tareq Rajab and was the driving force behind the accumulation and curating of various museum collections. She conducted much research into these various collections producing, along the way, published books and articles. For the purpose of her research, Jehan travelled to many countries and met and spent time with people involved in traditional crafts. She researched and wrote on topics as broad as “Costumes of the Arab World” to more specific topics such as Ottoman Towels. This talk outlines her contributions by focusing on various items and artefacts from the TareqRajab Museum collections of textiles and jewellery.

Mercedes Volait

Mercedes Volait is CNRS Research professor at INHA (Institut national d’histoire de l’art) in Paris and head of InVisu, a digital research center on architecture and heritage in the modern Mediterranean. Her current research focuses on issues of patronage, materiality and consumption in connection with the production of Mamluk style architecture and design in nineteenth-century Cairo.

She recently authored Fous du Caire [Crazy about Cairo: Eccentrics, architects and art lovers in Egypt (1867-1914)] (2009), and is the current editor of the digital journal Architecture beyond Europe.

Engaging the art and architecture of Cairo in the 19th century:A cross-cultural perspective

The monuments of Cairo exerted a fascination that translated into many media, from antiquarianism to design, both in Egypt and abroad. Myriad drawings ended up circulating in the general press. By the 1870s, a solid body of visual evidence, later supplemented by commercial photography, had made historical Cairo known to larger audiences than the privileged traveller. Collecting developed in parallel and with it, a blooming trade in antiques throughout the region.

This Mamluk craze, as the phenomenon is generically termed today, was predominantly European, and yet it was far from being one-sided. An early event is the display of a collection of Islamic woodwork by an Egyptian amateur at the 1867 World’s Fair. Using selected examples, in Egypt and elsewhere, documented by little-known archive material, the talk will illustrate the agencies and aesthetics involved in the discovery and revival of Mamluk art and architecture in the 19th century.

Jonathan N. Tubb

Jonathan Tubb is Keeper (Head) of the British Museum’s Middle East Department and President of The Palestine Exploration Fund. A specialist in the archaeology and history of the Levant, he excavated the Early Bronze Age site of Tiwal esh-Sharqi and then conducted nine seasons of excavations at the nearby major site of Tell es-Sa‘idiyeh. In 2013 he began a new excavation project at Ras al-Hadd in Oman. He is the author of many articles and several books on Levantine archaeology, including Canaanites (British Museum Press 2006).

The emergence of the Phoenicians as the first multinational entrepreneurs

The Phoenicians were an inventive, adventurous people who occupied the Syro-Lebanese coast in the first millennium BCE, and whose artistic creations were coveted throughout the Ancient Near East and beyond. The sea provided the mainstay of their economy. As a result of trading expeditions, they founded colonies throughout the Mediterranean, established through negotiation rather than military conquest, and in this respect the Phoenicians can be seen as the first multinational entrepreneurs.

This lecture examines the origins of the Phoenicians, demonstrating how political events at the end of the second millennium shaped the destinies of Levantine coastal cities such as Tyre, Sidon, Byblos and Arwad, and transformed their Canaanite populations into the seafaring Phoenicians who dominated maritime trade foremost of the first millennium.

Quinsan Ciao

Professor Quinsan Ciao has devoted her career to the international community of architectural design education. She currently holds the positions of Director of International Course Programs and University Distinguished Professor at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University, Shanghai. From 2003-2011, Dr Ciao was Associate Professor and Architecture Department Chair at Kuwait University. Previously she held faculty positions at Virginia Tech and Ball State University in the U.S.

Exploring the design and developing solutions for the siteadjacent to Puhadin Garden of Yangzhou, China

Yangzhou in China’s Jiangsu province is home to a large community of Hui Muslims: one of China’s ethnic minorities. It is also the location of the tomb and gardens of Puhadin, a twelfth century imam and descendant of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) who settled in Yangzhou and built one of China’s oldest mosques. Puhadin’s tomb continues to be a Muslim pilgrimage ground and a politically loaded symbol of Islam in China, thus requiring a structure which fulfills the narrative of an Islamic cultural site, as well as being an accessible, commercially viable, non-controversial component of the modern Chinese city. This lecture explores the unique design process of several proposals for the site, and in doing so, tells an important story about religion in contemporary Chinese civil society.

András Riedlmayer

András Riedlmayer is the bibliographer at the Documentation Center of the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at Harvard University. Since 1985, he has directed the unit of university’s library charged with developing, managing and providing reference and access to North America’s largest and most comprehensive collection of visual and textual documentation of the art, architecture, archaeology and visual cultures of the Islamic world. He also served as an expert witness on the destruction of cultural heritage in war crime trials related to the armed conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Islamic art and culture in Bosnia:Past and future of a 600-year-old European heritage

Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the heart of Europe, is also a historic part of the Islamic world. Islam arrived in Bosnia in the 1400s with the Ottomans. Within a century after the conquest, more than half of Bosnia’s people converted to Islam and a distinctive culture took form, with its own art and architecture, literature, social customs and folklore.

At the end of the 20th century, Bosnia’s pluralistic society came under attack. The ensuing war led to the deaths of more than 100,000 people and drove millions from their homes. Historic monuments, museums, libraries and archives were deliberately targeted for destruction. Since the end of the war, Bosnians have faced the difficult task of recovery and rebuilding, and of preserving what remains of this endangered heritage, the subject of this lecture.

Georges A. Bertrand

Dr Georges A. Bertrand, graduate from the Sorbonne University and former student of “Ecole du Louvre”, is writer and photographer. He works on the incessant exchanges between the cultures of Europe and Asia, in both time and space and the aesthetic links uniting the Muslim world to the Christian world. He has published several books as art historian and/or photographer. He has held senior positions at several universities in the Arab world and his work is now presented at various international academic conferences.

Muslim aesthetic traces in Christian architecture in France

In the Middle Ages in the West, mainly in the Romanesque period, aesthetic relationships, among others, existed despite confrontations between Muslim and Christian worlds. In fact, art has always been a link between people. The transmission of patterns proves the reality of exchanges that took place between two seemingly fundamentally different conceptions of the world. We know the role played by the Muslim civilisation in the field of science, but it is also prevalent in art.

Georges A. Bertrand has a different perception of the French heritage. For him, its beauty can help to understand the diverse and profound unity of humankind. That artistic dimension will be exposed further in this lecture, using maps, photographs and drawings, showing the reality of ties between East and West.

Lisa Golombek

Curator Emeritus at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada, Dr Lisa Golombek is a noted on Islamic art, particularly from the Timurid period. In addition to teaching at the University of Toronto, she has written five books, including Persian Pottery in the First Global Age: The Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, published in 2014. Finally, she is the author of more than 60 journal articles on a wide range of subjects, including Islamic architecture, gardens, urban history, painting, ceramics, and calligraphy and she currently has 5 articles in press.

China’s challenge to the Safavid potter: Imitate or innovate

Since the 9th century Persian potters looked to China for inspiration. With the expansion of global trade around 1600, particularly when the English and Dutch East Indies Companies took over, Iran’s ceramic industry countered the influx of the highly sought after Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. But, could the local potters compete?

Safavid pottery in the DAI will be used to illustrate how the potters met this challenge and how these pieces fit into the narrative that evolved through the multi-disciplinary research project at the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto (published in 2014). This work continues the approach used previously, combining traditional art historical methodology, historical research, and scientific analysis to come up with new attributions to workshops and a new chronology.

معمــار القانــون: مقاربــة فـي سكــون الهياكــل و ديناميكيــات التغييــر

القانون، لغة ، هو »األصل« أو »املقياس«، وهو لفظ قديم يجد مصدره يف كلمة canon اليونانية، أما القانون اصطالحا، فهو كل عالقة مطردة بني ظاهرتني تؤدي إىل نتيجة ثابتة ومستقرة. ورغم ثبات الهياكل الكربى للقانون من قيم ونظم ومؤسسات، إال أن مدى املجال الذي يسمح ألطرافه بالتحرك فيه لتنظيم تلك العالقات هو أمر ذو طبيعة ديناميكية

نشطة، تتجاذبه تباينات عديدة.

من هذا املنظور، تقدم الباحثة يف محارضتها مقاربة تحليلية لدور املرشعني يف معرض تصديهم ملهامهم الدستورية. بذلك، ميكن للمتأمل أن يرى بوضوح أن أدوات القانون كالدساتري والترشيعات والعقود والرشكات وصناديق االستثامر ما هي

Dr Samir Mahmoud is Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Architecture, American University of Beirut (2014-2016). In 2013-2014 he was Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the Arts & Humanities Initiative at the American University of Beirut; in 2012-2013 he was Barakat Postdoctoral Fellow at the Khalili Centre for Research in Art & Material Culture, University of Oxford and Agha Khan Postdoctoral Fellow at MIT in the Fall of 2011-2012. He is the author of several publications on Islamic aesthetics, Islamic philosophy, and is currently working on two new books.

Islamic aesthetics: Between tradition and its contemporary relevance.

Many have tried to define a new field of ‘Islamic’ aesthetics but have stumbled for the same reasons the epithet ‘Islamic’ Art and Architecture has come into question: How can we attribute to a non-European culture a cultural term that has no equivalent? This lecture is an introduction to the emerging field of ‘Islamic’ aesthetics. It raises some of the fundamental questions and challenges that face such an inquiry. The lecture will also give four extensive examples, two from Kalam, one on the nature of the gaze, and one from Ibn ‘Arabi to show how medieval Islamic discussions of beauty are still relevant for aesthetic discussions today in our postmodern world.

Sussan Babaie

Sussan Babaie teaches on the arts of Islam at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. She is the author and co-author of several scholarly books and articles including Persian Drawings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1994); Isfahan and Its Palaces: Statecraft, Shi‘ism and the Architecture of Conviviality in Early Modern Iran (2008); Slaves of the Shah; New Elite of Safavid Iran (2004); Shirin Neshat (2013); and Persian Kingship and Architecture (2015).

Cooking in/of art: Cuisine as visual knowledge

Visual representations of cooking and objects of eating and drinking have rarely been viewed as means for the transmission of knowledge about culinary cultural practices and their implications for an understanding of ‘taste’. Instead, primacy is given to the sense of sight as the principal conduit toward the perception of taste in art. From late in the 15th century in Persianate painting, evidence shows a remarkable rise in frequency and variety of representations of cooking and serving of food, a phenomenon rarely noted and indeed rather unusual for painting in the Islamic world in general. Focusing on the Iranian evidence, this talk explores art – paintings and tableware – and treatises on food as visual meditations in the processes of making culinary knowledge and of its transmission as cultural memory.

يحتل هذا الجامع مكانة مميزة بني مساجد غرناطة يف عهدها اإلسالمي، بل أصبح يضاهي مكانة جامع قرطبة وأشبيليه العلامء والقرويني يف فاس، ثم تفرد بالصدارة بعد سقوط الحوارض األندلسية واحدة تلو األخرى، وأصبح محط أنظار وطالب العلم، وحظي باهتامم األرس الحاكمة التي توالت عىل حكم املدينة. وبعد سقوط غرناطة يف قبضة مليك إسبانيا الكاثوليكيني فرناندو وإيزابيال سنة 897هـ/ 1492م، حظي باهتاممها، لكن بشكل آخر بعد قرار تحويله إىل كاتدرائية سغراريو. تلقي هذه املحارضة الضوء عىل هذا الجامع من خالل التعريف بغرناطة ومساجدها، مع الرتكيز عىل الجامع

János Kubassek

Dr János Kubassek is the director of the Hungarian Geographical Museum, a member of the Curatorium, Lázár Deák Cartographical Foundation and a member of the Museum Committee of the Hungarian National Cultural Foundation. He is the author of more than a dozen books and 200 scientific and popular journal articles. He has participated in study trips and international scientific and cultural exchange programmes in Europe, Asia, and North America. Finally, he’s led scientific expeditions in Africa, the Caucasus and the Sahara.

Hungarian travellers in the Islamic world

Numerous Hungarian geographers travelled about in the Islamic world, and some of them became internationally acknowledged representatives of Islamic studies. Their observations and notes are of particular importance today, because they present several phenomena that may have a special interpretation today and that may cast light on several recent events. The limitations of the extent of this study do not allow for an in-depth evaluation and analysis, but demonstrating the activity and work of some Hungarian travellers, including György Raszinyai Huszti, Franciscan monk, Gábor Pécsváradi, István Zalánkeményi Kakas, Ármin Vámbéry, and Gyula Germanus will convince the readers that they significantly contributed to the understanding of the Islamic world.

Mina Moraitou

Mina Moraitou is the head of the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art. She has recently curated an exhibition on Sufism, co-organised an exhibition on Orientalism with the works of the Greek painter Theodoros Ralli and edited a catalogue on Ottoman glass. Her current projects include developing an exhibition of the designs of Thomas Hope from Istanbul, the publication of the Iznik ceramics collection in collaboration with John Carswell and an exhibition on the Fustat collection of the museum.

Mainly woodwork: Early Islamic carving from the Benaki collection in Athens

The lecture will focus on Islamic carvings from the collection of the Benaki Museum. The woodwork, ivory and bone collection constitutes part of the personal collection of the founder Antonis Benakis and a number of important pieces were acquired before the opening of the museum in 1931. The discussion will contextualise the collection while focusing on the evolution and diversity of Islamic design and the Islamic art of carving. The use of calligraphy as ornament and the depiction of nature is central throughout these periods as a recurring theme with plant motifs appearing in isolation or set in a geometric framework and developing into either naturalistic or stylized compositions, often with a sense of energy. Some of the objects to be considered are associated because of the shared vocabulary used between Islamic and Christian context.

Giovanni Curatola

Giovanni Curatola is a professor at the University of Udine, Italy and is the author of more than one hundred scientific publications on Islamic art. He curated the first general exhibition on Islamic Art in Italy in 1993. He also curated the exhibition al-Fann. Art from the Islamic Civilization. The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, and, together with the curator Sue Kaoukji, he organised the loan of 250 objects from the Collection to the MFAH (Houston, USA). In 2014 he held summer courses on Islamic Art at the AUK, Kuwait.

The Dragon. From China to Islam

One of the most interesting periods of Islamic art, during which the transmission of new iconographies was really impressive, was the 13th-14th centuries, after the invasion of the Mongolian tribes from the East and the establishment of new rulers: the Ilkhanids. But the history of the dragon (and the snake, the whale and other animals….) is a very ancient one. The aim of this talk is to show that the images coming from the East along the “Silk Road” filled a gap in the iconography of Islam, and that the adaptation of old descriptions (such as those found in the Shahnama) to the newely discovered repertoire remained substantially unchallenged until the present time – making this a fascinating tale.

Roy Mottahedeh

Roy Parviz Mottahedeh is the Gurney Professor of History at Harvard University. He has written extensively on the history of the Middle East in the 10th and 11th centuries CE. His publications include Loyalty and Leadership in an Early Islamic Society, The Mantle of the Prophet, and Lessons in Islamic Jurisprudence. He has written numerous articles on the social, intellectual and political history of the Middle East from the 7th century to the present.

῾Ajā’ib in the Book of QazwīnīOne of the best known and most lavishly illustrated books of the pre-modern Arabic tradition is ῾Ajā’ib al-Makhlūqāt by Qazwīnī, written in the 13th century CE. This encyclopaedia of the world of creation has a special interest in the “marvels,” the fabulous animals, plants and people, assumed to exist in the world. Islamic painters from the 13th to the 19th century portrayed these “creatures” in their work. The illustrations in Qazwīnī’s manuscripts help us understand the way in which painters of the time visualized both familiar creatures, such as the cat, and fabulous creatures, such as the unicorn. Qazwīnī’s text conveys the way in which a Muslim intellectual mentally organised (and also disorganised) creation. The illustrations also tell us about the varied imaginative worlds of the artists.

Fahad Y. Al-Sumait

Fahed Al-Sumait is an Assistant Professor and Chair of the Mass Communication Department at GUST where he teaches various courses on strategic communication, ranging from political communication to public relations. He was previously a Fulbright-Hays fellow for his research into discourses on Arab democratization and a post-doctoral research fellow at the Middle East Institute in the National University of Singapore. He holds an MA in intercultural communication from the University of New Mexico and a PhD in political communication from the University of Washington.

Communicating across cultures: Basic concepts

Like much of the region, Kuwait hosts a highly multicultural population. In addition to the varied cultural influxes, many residents also travel widely and experience foreign cultures first-hand. Simultaneously, mass media and the Internet have profoundly changed the flow of information, cultural products and values to which we are all exposed. In short, the globalised and multicultural environment of Kuwait is more diverse now than at any point in its history. In this lecture, Dr Al-Sumait will introduce some basic concepts in intercultural communication, the field of study concerned with improving communication between people from different cultural backgrounds, and offer suggestions and resources to help improve the quality and effectiveness of your intercultural interactions.

Robert Mason

Dr Robert Mason’s particular area of specialisation is the material culture and archaeology of the Middle East and Europe during the Islamic and Mediaeval periods (roughly 500 CE to the present), especially ceramics and vitreous materials. Mason received his doctorate from the University of Oxford in 1994, and is cross-appointed between the Royal Ontario Museum and the Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations Department at the University of Toronto, where he is an Associate Professor.

Trade, technology and industry of elite ceramics of the Islamic world

Pottery generally tends to be the most important artefact to study for archaeologists, because it is so prolific. But the ceramics of the Islamic world are important for other reasons also. They represent high technology, with the Islamic world creating a synthesis of technology in a dynamic time for research and science. They are significant art, with their elite status making it worth providing them with original and innovative expression. They were also a significant industry, with major production centres that had global distributions. This talk will outline the significance of the pottery of the Islamic world and its significance in the world at large.

Trudy S. Kawami

Dr Trudy S. Kawami, Director of Research for the Arthur M. Sackler Foundation, NYC, is a specialist in the art of ancient Western Asia. She has carried out research in Turkey, Iran, and Central Asia, and in major European and American museums. Dr Kawami has published numerous books and articles and lectures frequently. She has a special interest in the mingling of ancient cultures in the Gulf area and along the Silk Road in Central Asia and curated the Iron Age section of Splendors of the Ancient East: Antiquities in The al-Sabah Collection.

“And they all shall be gathered” (Quran 6:38):The animal parade in the Gulf in Antiquity

The gazelle and the wild goat were native to the Gulf and appeared in the earliest art from the region. Just as the blue waters of the Gulf provided a highway for humans, it served the movement of animals as well. The heavy-horned water buffalo was native to South Asia, but took up happy residence in the reed swamps of the head of the Gulf and appeared in ancient art as far north as Syria. Exotics like the maned Asiatic lion never lived here in nature, but may have been kept in royal zoos and were quickly adopted as international symbols of power and authority. The fascinating mix of local and exotics animals, whether domesticates or wild, nicely mirrors the diversity of peoples who moved through the Gulf in antiquity.

Michalis Lychounas

Michalis Lychounas is currently serving as deputy mayor in the Municipality of Kavala and is working on his PhD at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany on a subject on Early Christian architectural sculpture from Philippi. He has taken part in several excavation and restoration project in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. His research domain is mainly on Late Antiquity and other transition periods. His interests also include issues of cultural management, the heritage of the other and cultural tourism.

Artistic expression in Late Antiquity art

The long conflict and endless wars between the Eastern Roman Empire and the Sassanian world overshadowed the continuous exchange of ideas and artistic forms and how this exchange contributed to the reshaping of the artistic vocabulary in the Eastern Mediterranean. This lecture will explore the way art created in the Late Antiquity era was influenced by forms and techniques from Mesopotamia in the time of the Sassanids and the Early Islamic period. It will also present several ways in which the art evolved, creating a new Byzantine medieval artistic glossary. Several areas of artistic expression will be explored, along with architectural sculpture and minor arts. The intermediaries will also be taken into consideration, as a melting pot where the classic forms were reorganised to present new trends in art.

Friedrich Spuhler

Dr Friedrich Spuhler is one of Europe’s most important rug scholars particularly on classical carpets. Former curator of the Museum of Islamic Art, Berlin, Spuhler has lectured all over the world and published articles in many important publications. He is the author of several books including two books on carpets and textiles in The al-Sabah Collection, Carpets from Islamic Lands and Pre-Islamic Carpets and Textiles from Eastern Lands.

Early Islamic textiles from the Silk Road

This lecture deals with more than 400 textile fragments we prepared for a third book on carpets and textiles in The al-Sabah Collection, focusing on the textile-treasures from Samagan, in the northern part of Afghanistan. The process of organising the objects will be discussed, as this was the first challenge to be addressed, given the enormous variety of designs. Methods used by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Kunstgewerbe-Museum in Berlin, and the Textile Museum in Washington over the last century were reviewed and adapted to suit the collection. This gives us a historical overview and the easiest way to find related pieces. While talking about the objects, a selection of 50–60 pictures will be presented. These images will clarify the rationale for the groupings.

Dr Yuka Kadoi is an art historian specialising in the cross-cultural exchanges of objects, ideas, and images in pre-modern Islamic Eurasia. Her research focuses on aspects of Persian art historiography in the early twentieth century. She is currently preparing a book on of jade objects in The al-Sabah Collection in Kuwait. She has written or edited numerous books and articles, including Islamic Chinoiserie (2009); The Shaping of Persian Art (2013); and Arthur Upham Pope and A New Survey of Persian Art (2016).

Revisiting Timurid jades

Widely produced not only in East Asia but also in Islamic West Asia, Central Asia, and South Asia, the nephrite hardstone known more commonly as jade exerted a long-lasting impact on the shaping of cultural identities across great swathes of Asia. While many aspects of the production of jade objects prior to and following the rise of Islam in West Asia in the 7th century remain unclear, a good number of surviving examples of carved nephrite attributable to the 15th century suggest that a certain fashion of jade objects took a decisive shape under Timurid rule (1370–1507). This serves to offer one of the important patterns of cultural interactions between East Asia and the Islamic world and will be the primary topic of this lecture.

Judith A. Lerner

Dr Judith A. Lerner is an art historian, specialising in the history and visual culture of Iran and Central Asia, from the Achaemenid to the early Islamic periods. She is a research associate at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World and co-editor of the Journal of Inner Asian Art and Archaeology. She is especially interested in and has published widely on the art and culture of the Silk Road and the uses of Iran’s pre-Islamic visual past in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Art at the Crossroads: The visual culture of Sasanians, Kushano-Sasanian,and Huns in Bactria

In the course of its long history, the Iranian land of Bactria (present-day Afghanistan) came under the sway of successive conquerors. Early in the 3rd century CE, the Sasanian Persians (224-650 CE) spread their control east into Bactria, taking over Kushan lands and extending their sway into Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Initially a Sasanian vassal kingdom, this territory became a province governed by viceroys who are known as “Kushano-Sasanians.” By the mid-4th century, however, various Hunnic groups had entered Bactria, challenging Persian rule and eventually dominating the region for the next 200 years. Adding to this complexity is the interaction among the different religious traditions in the region. This talk will explore how this art reflects this territory’s political and religious history.

Alain George

Dr Alain George is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. His research, for which he was awarded a Philip Leverhulme Prize in 2010, encompasses several intersecting themes. He is currently preparing a book on Qur’anic manuscripts and religious books in The al-Sabah Collection. He is also working on a book about the Great Mosque of Damascus in which he seeks to retrace the background for its construction, its relation to the Christians in contemporary society and its complex meaning within the nascent civilisation of Islam.

The Great Mosque of Damascus in Umayyad times:Towards a reconstruction

The Great Mosque of Damascus is one of the major landmarks of Islamic architecture, and the earliest mosque still standing in something close to its original state, having been built less than a century after the Hijra. But as with any monument that has stood for so long, it has undergone numerous phases of destruction, decline, repair and rebuilding over the centuries. What, then, is really “Umayyad” about the mosque that we see today? What did the original building look like? This lecture will set to explore the above questions through the study of the extant monument and its confrontation with textual sources, whilst making use of new possibilities offered by 3D architectural modelling.

Marco Folin

Dr Marco Folin is a Professor of History of Architecture at the University of Genoa. He has published several studies on Italian urban culture and the relationship between art and politics in the Renaissance. Among his main publications: Courts and courtly arts in Renaissance Italy. Art, culture and politics, 1395-1530 (ed.), ACC & Officina Libraria, Woodbridge 2010; A Renaissance Architecture of Power. Princely Palaces in Italian Quattrocento (ed., with S. Beltramo and F. Cantatore), Leiden, Brill (forthcoming, 2015).

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: Memory, architecture, imagination

The presentation will focus on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; those mythic constructions located around the Eastern Mediterranean rim and listed by Hellenistic authors as emblems of an extraordinary architectural perfection. I will try to explain why this canon was established, in Ptolemaic Egypt (IV century BCE), and how it continued to be transmitted in Europe during the Middle Ages. Between the fifteenth and sixteenth century the first attempts to reconstruct the actual aspect of the original monuments started (which, except the pyramids, had all been destroyed): at first only on the basis of ancient descriptions. This would be supplemented later, thanks to ambitious archaeological campaigns which fuelled the imagination of several generations of European artists, writers and architects.

Monica Preti

Monica Preti is Head of Academic Programs at the Auditorium of Louvre Museum. She has published studies on the history of collecting (18th-19th centuries) and on the relationship between arts and literature in the Renaissance. Among her main publications: L’Arioste et les arts (ed., with M. Paoli), Éditions du Musée du Louvre - Officina Libraria, Paris-Milan 2011 and Delicious Decadence: The rediscovery of French 18th-century painting in the 19th century (ed.; with G. Faroult - C. Voghterr), Ashgate, London 2014.

Between Text and Image:Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso and its influence on arts

The lecture focuses on one of the greatest romance epics of European literature, Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto, published exactly five centuries ago. It is a chivalric poem (almost 40,000 verses) exuding the exuberance, grace and intellectual curiosity of the Italian Renaissance. From the backdrop of war between Charlemagne and the Saracen army attempting to invade Europe, the poem wanders at will from Japan to the Hebrides. With its magicians and enchanted forests, fabulous fights, extravagant knights and troubling heroines, the text exerted a wide influence on later art and culture, stimulating the imagination of several generations of artists from all over Europe. Through their paintings and sculptures, the lecture will discuss the mutual influences of images and texts fuelling artistic and literary creation.

Asseel Al-Ragam

Dr Asseel Al-Ragam is currently an Assistant Professor at the College of Architecture at Kuwait University. She was a visiting researcher at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture Malaquais and Sciences Po Paris, France and her published work in international journals focuses on urban and architectural modernity, heritage production and the politics of urban and architecture representation and preservation in Kuwait. Her dissertation “Towards a Critique of an Architectural Nahdha: A Kuwaiti Example” explored the relationship between a cultural renaissance and the built environment.

Creative preservation and adaptive reuse

In Kuwait, recent efforts to hasten a post-oil economy have resulted in a second wave of historical erasure of Kuwait City, this time of its modernist urban landscape. While in many cities an urban palimpsest promotes a discursive relationship between memory, history and the built environment, in Kuwait the rapid cancelation of historical urban layers has created a wide social and cultural gulf between residents and the “urban.” The presentation proposes an alternative planning approach that takes into account the idea of creative preservation and adaptive reuse during periods of redevelopment. It argues that modernist and postcolonial tropes of loss, hybridity and ambivalence are universal urban phenomena that are not exclusive to European or North American narratives.

قدم ابن املجاور يف العامني )625 /626هـ( وصفا دقيقا ملكة املكرمة يف عرصه، منبها بذلك إىل أهمية مكة املكرمة ومكانتها الدينية. وتعترب املادة التي قدمها عىل جانب كبري من األهمية، ألنها مألت فراغا يف املعلومات الرحلية والجغرافية عن مكة املكرمة يف مطلع القرن السابع الهجري )13م(، خاصة وأن ابن املجاور مل يكن محدثا ومؤرخا فحسب، بل كان إىل

جانب ذلك، رحالة دقيق املالحظة.

ونظرا ألهمية الكتاب من الناحية العلمية والتاريخية، فقد ارتأينا أن نعود إليه، وخاصة إىل أكرث طبعاته توثيقا )تحقيق اوسكر لوففرين(، بهدف استنطاق مادته عن مكة املكرمة، والوقوف عند بعض ما تختزنه من تفاصيل وإشارات معربة

عن مرحلة هامة من تاريخ مكة املكرمة لقلة ما كتب عنها والضطراب املادة التاريخية املتوفرة حولها.

Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi

Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi is the founder of the Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah, an independent, not-for-profit United Arab Emirates based initiative established to manage, preserve and exhibit artworks from the Arab world. Al Qassemi is also a columnist and Twitter commentator on Arab affairs. In addition to his political and social commentary, he has written extensively about Arab art for publications including Al Monitor, Ibraaz, Qantara, Canvas, and Huffington Post. Al Qassemi also serves as an MIT Media Labs Director’s Fellow for 2014/16.

Milestones of Modern Arab Art

This talk will address important developments and key milestones that took place in the region’s art sphere in the 20th and 21st centuries. It will look at the circumstances within which art-makers operated, and the historic context, which helped shape artistic production. It will also look at the role of artists in contributing to a critical discourse on current events, and their participation in the building of a culture’s history. The aim of this talk is to shed light on the distinct eras and movements that occurred within the arts in the Arab World in the past several decades.

جامعة سوسة الدكتوراه يف منح لجنة ورئيس الجامعة رئيس ونائب الكويت، جامعة التاريخ يف قسم زائر يف أستاذ التونسية. حاصل عىل دكتوراه دولة يف التاريخ العريب اإلسالمي الوسيط. عمل أستاذا زائرا يف جامعة ليون يف فرنسا. له عدة كتب ودراسات، منها كتاب أنباء البدو: دراسة يف الحراك السيايس والثقايف يف املجتمع العريب الداخيل قبل اإلسالم )2012(،

فضال عن مساهامت عديدة، منها مقال يف كتاب جامعي عن تاريخ فن الخزف يف بالد املغرب اإلسالمي.

نحو تاريخ شمويل للجاهلية العربية

تاريخ ما قبل اإلسالم أو تاريخ »الجاهلية« هو اليوم يف الدوائر العلمية عبارة عن ورشة مفتوحة تتقدم فيها األبحاث بواسطة إما األبحاث هذه تـنجز واالقتصادي. الفكري والتاريخ القبيل االجتامعي التاريخ لتشمل وتتنوع التاريخية واملعروفة الـمكتشفة األدبية للمصادر تركيزا أكرث استثامر بواسطة أو بشكل خاص(، )أثرية اكتشاف شواهد جديدة ككتب النسب وكتب الطبقات. من خالل هذه األبحاث أخذت تتشكل اليوم صورة متكاملة لالتجاهات والتيارات التي

كانت تخرتق هذه املجتمعات.

الدقيقة. وال العقد الجديدة، واستعراض بعض اسهاماتنا يف بعض العلمية التعريف بهذه املكتسبات تتناول املحارضة شك يف أنه من الصعب، تناول كل الحراك الثقايف الجاهيل املعقد والشامل لعامل عريب ميتد من اليمن إىل ديار بكر، لكن املحارضة تتناول بعض العينات الدالة، وتسلط الضوء عىل العامل العريب البدوي الداخيل يف الجزيرة العربية، وهو عامل بقي

مجهوال حتى وقت قريب، مع الرتكيز عىل الحراك الذي كانت تعرفه قبائل إياد و عبس، كمثال.

Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah The Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah (DAI) was created to support the loan of objects from The al-Sabah Collection to the State of Kuwait and operates under the auspices of the National Council of Culture, Arts, and Letters. Over time the mission has grown to include promoting the fusion of people, cultures and ideas both in Kuwait and in countries hosting DAI exhibitions and loans from the collection.

The cultural season - rich with world renowned lecturers, international films, performances by musicians from more than 30 countries, interactive education programmes for children starting at age 18 months, informational and academic publications – also foments the fusion of ideas, people and cultures. Based for the first time at the new Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah at Yarmouk Cultural Centre, the DAI will host activities and events that share aspects of the world around us, as it opens its doors to welcome all those who choose to enter and participate.

DAI Educational Fun

Children learn best when the right tools are used in teaching. For the DAI, these tools include objects in the exhibitions, teamwork, and fun – plus paint, crayons, glitter, glue and all sorts of other material that encourages creativity.

This cultural season the DAI has programmes for children between the ages of 18 months and 12 years old. New this season are Storytime and Writing for Children programmes that will be offered at both Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah at Amricani Cultural Centre and Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah at Yarmouk Cultural Centre.

CAW and CAW Jrs: For Children Ages 6 - 12

The Children’s Art Workshop (CAW) is for children ages 9 – 12; CAW Jrs is for children 6 – 8. The programmes are often combined, with slight adjustments in the projects to ensure that every participant is challenged in a creative way. In addition to introducing the children to multiple aspects of Islamic art and culture, the programme also includes activities that require the participants to further develop leadership, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication skills. The sessions are 9:30 - 11 am at the Amricani Cultural Centre.

وهو برنامج يعقد يف مركز االمريكاين الثقايف، ويستهدف األطفال الذين ترتاوح أعامرهم ما بني 3 - 5. لقد أثبت هذا تناول موضوع واحد الربنامج عىل كبريا. تقوم فكرة إيجابيا أبدى األطفال املشاركون تفاعال الربنامج جدواه، فقد كان والرتكيز عليه ملدة ستة أسابيع، ويتضمن استخدام الفنون وكتب األطفال واملناقشات لتعزيز األفكار الرئيسية. استقيت للتعليم يف جامعة هارفرد، وهو برنامج العليا الدراسات الفنية« لكلية الدورات من برنامج »لوحة األفكار كافة هذه يقوم عىل املالحظة والوصف، واملقارنة والربط، والتساؤل والتحقق، واكتشاف أوجه التعقيد، واستكشاف وجهات النظر واالستدالل واالستنتاج، بحيث تصبح بعدها نظرة أطفال ال تتجاوز أعامرهم 5 أعوام، للفن نظرة متمعنة وليست عابرة، وتشجعهم عىل التفكري فيه والحديث عنه، ومن ثم يصبح الفن مصدر وحي لهم. تقام الدورات يف متام الساعة 9:30

الدورة األوىل: ما هو الفن اإلسالمي؟ الدورة الثانية: رواية القصص مع الفن

وهو برنامج يعقد يف مركز االمريكاين الثقايف، ويستهدف األطفال الذين ترتاوح أعامرهم بني 18 شهرا و 3 سنوات، بصحبة الربنامج يف مقر فنيا، يف حني سيتضمن للمتحف، ورواية قصص، ومرشوعا زيارات الربنامج يتضمن أفراد األرسة. أحد

الريموك القيام بعدة زيارات للمعارض إن وجدت، وزيارة ملخترب ترميم اآلثار يف حال عدم وجود معارض قامئة.

وقت رواية القصص: لألطفال من سن 2 - 8

رواية القصص هي أحد الربامج الجديدة للموسم الثقايف الـ21 لدار اآلثار اإلسالمية، وهو موجه لألطفال الذين ترتاوح أعامرهم ما بني 2-8 سنوات، وقد تم تصميمه لدعم اهتامم األطفال بالكتب والقراءة والثقافة. كام يعمل عىل تشجيع ناقد فكر وبناء التوضيحية، الرسوم يف والتفكري املراقبة عىل ويحفزهم القصص، إىل واالستامع الجلوس عىل األطفال واكتساب مهارات التفكري اإلبداعي. رواية القصص يف مركز االمريكاين الثقايف سيكون يف أيام السبت يف متام الساعة 3:30

CAW Tots: For Children Ages 3 - 5

CAW Tots, Amricani Cultural Centre’s programme for potty-trained children ages 3 – 5, has proven to be impressive or rather, the children participating have proven to be impressive. The CAW Tots idea is to take one subject and concentrate on it for six weeks, utilizing art, children’s books, and discussions to reinforce key ideas. All these sessions are built around the Harvard University Graduate School of Education “Artful Thinking Palette:” observing and describing, comparing and connecting, questioning and investigating, finding complexity, exploring viewpoints, and reasoning. As a result, the kids – just 3 – 5 – are not just glancing at art, but really looking at it, thinking about it, talking about it and then, being inspired by it. The sessions are 9:30 - 11 am.

Amricani Minis: For Children Ages 18 months - 3

The Amricani Minis programme is for children between the ages of 18 months and 3 years old, with a family member. At ACC, the programme integrates museum visits with story time and an “art” project. At Yarmouk Cultural Centre, the programme will incorporate visits to the gallery when an exhibition is on and the conservation lab when there is no exhibition.

Storytime: For Children Ages 2 - 8

Storytime is one of the new programmes for CS21. Geared to children between the ages of 2 and 8, this is designed to support the children’s interest in books, reading and culture. It also encourages children to sit and listen to the story, observe and think about the illustrations, building critical thinking and creative thinking skills. Storytime at Amricani is held set Saturdays at 3:30 PM. Storytime at Yarmouk is held set Wednesdays at 3:30 PM.

الكتابة لألطفال: لألعامر 8 - 12

»الكتابة لربنامج الناجحة الجوانب من عديد يتضمن ،12-8 سن من األطفال يستهدف برنامج هو لألطفال الكتابة للقراءة«. وخالل كل ستة أسابيع من الربنامج سوف يتعني عىل املشاركني كتابة قصة لألطفال مع صور توضيحية، إما باللغة العربية أو اإلنجليزية، وقد قامت مؤسسة كارنيغي بدراسة منذ بضع سنوات توصلت فيها إىل أنه »كلام زادت كتابات الطالب تحسنت قراءتهم«. ونحن نقوم بإضافة عنرص الفنون البرصية من خالل االشرتاط عىل الطفل بأن يدمج يف القصص التي يكتبها رسوما توضيحية، مام يجعلهم يبحثون عن أفضل طريقة لتضمني الصور يف قصصهم لتساعد عىل

رواية القصة.

وتبدأ الحصة من الساعة 3:30 حتى 4:30 مساء. كام سيتم تجميع القصص املكتملة يف نهاية كل دورة يف نسختني ملكتبة الطفل، باإلضافة إىل ذلك سيتم طباعة نسخة واحدة من كل قصة منجزة للطفل الذي أنجزها.

املرح لكل العائلة يف مركز االمريكاين الثقايف

يف هذا املوسم تتاح للعائلة مثاين فرص للحضور واستكشاف فنون بالد املسلمني، والفنون القدمية، ومركز االمريكاين الثقايف، فضال عن إبداعاتها الخاصة بها، وذلك مرة يف الشهر ملدة أربع ساعات من الساعة 02:00 حتى 06:00 مساء. حيث ينظم مرشدو املتاحف املتدربون عدة أنشطة تشجع األرس عىل املغامرة معا، واكتشاف املزيد عن العامل من حولهم من خالل

األلعاب واملشاريع الفنية املرحة.

تقام األنشطة يف صاالت العرض، وداخل وخارج مباين مركز االمريكاين، ويف الباحة. تكون هذه األنشطة هادئة أحيانا، بينام يف أحيان أخرى مليئة باملنافسة الودية املرحة، بل واملضحكة. وهذه األنشطة متاحة لكل أفراد العائلة من األطفال إىل

الكبار، وبل حتى الجد والجدة، إذ يكتسب املشاركون خاللها مهارات جديدة يف جو من املرح واملتعة.

Writing for Children: For Ages 8 – 12

Writing for Children is a programme for 8 – 12 year olds, incorporating many aspects of the successful “Writing to Read” programme. During each six week programme, the participants will have to write and illustrate a story for children, in either Arabic or English. The Carnegie Corporation completed a study a few years ago that noted that if you increase how much students write it improves how well they read. We are adding a visual art element by requiring illustrations be incorporated in the stories. The children will have to figure out the best way to create pictures that help tell their story.

Each meeting will run from 3:30 – 4:30 PM. At the end of each session, two copies of a compilation of all the completed stories will be made for the children’s library. In addition, one copy of each completed story will be printed and bound for the child.

Family Fun at Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah at Amricani Cultural Centre

This season families have eight opportunities to come and explore art of the Islamic world, art from ancient past, the Amricani Cultural Centre, and their own creativity. Once a month, for four hours from 2 PM – 6 PM, the DAI Museum Interns organise activities that encourage families to have an adventure together – discovering more about the world around them through games, art projects and fun.

The action takes place in the galleries, in and outside the buildings, and in the Baha. Sometimes the activities are quiet, but not often; sometimes the activities are competitive, but only in a friendly fashion; often the activities are a bit silly, but everyone needs to be silly every once in a while. What is constant is that the activities work for ages 2 – grandparents, all the participants learn something, and everyone has fun in the process.

Making Meaning: DAI Docent and Museum Interns

One of our docents said they enjoyed being in the programme because they felt like they were “making meaning” for themselves and for visitors. She explained that being a docent helped give her a context for her life in Kuwait and that sharing her knowledge and experience with visitors helped make the experience more meaningful for them.

What she didn’t say but is equally true is that the docents and the museum interns also help make the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah at Amricani Cultural Centre more meaningful. The docents and the interns, who are also docents, bring the building and the exhibitions to life for visitors. They animate otherwise static objects in ways that resonate with visitors, ensuring that when the visitors leave they take part of museum with them.

DAI Docents are volunteers who undergo 15 hours of training before serving as hosts for visitors to the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah at Amricani Cultural Centre. Docents are asked to volunteer at least three hours per month and to participate in special events, like exhibition openings and VIP visits. The DAI offers training in both Arabic and English twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring.

DAI Museum Interns are students between the ages of 13 and 16 who are selected for a 22 month programme. In addition to working as docents, museum interns are introduced five specialities within the museum professions and then work in two of them to create an exhibition. Applications for the museum intern programme are available in May, the selection is made in June and the work starts in September.

حتى يكون للمتحف معنى: مرشدو املتاحف والطالب املتدربون يف دار اآلثار اإلسالمية

قالت إحدى مرشدات املتاحف لدى دار اآلثار اإلسالمية أنها سعيدة بحضورها الربنامج الخاص مبرشدي املتحف، وذلك ألن الربنامج مينحهم شعورا بأهميتهم يف هذا املجال الذي أضفى “معنى” عىل حياتهم وعىل زائري دار اآلثار اإلسالمية كام أوضحت املرشدة أن هذا العمل قد أضاف بعدا جديدا عىل حياتهم يف دولة الكويت، فنقل تجربتهم ومعارفهم وخربتهم

املكتسبة للزائرين أضفى أهمية مضافة عىل تجربة زيارة املتحف.

وما مل تقله املرشدة، وإن كان جليا، هو أن مرشدي ومتدربـــــي املتاحف يساعدون أيضــا يف إضفاء معنى أعمق عىل دار اآلثـــــار اإلسالميـــــــة يف مركــــــز االمريكاين الثقايف، فهم بأساليبهم املشوقة يبثون الحياة يف املباين التاريخية،

ويعيدون النبض يف التحف الساكنة يف املعارض عند تواجد الزوار، فيغادر الزائر وقد ترك املتحف أثرا باقيا يف نفسه.

مرشدو املتاحف يف دار اآلثار االسالمية هم متطوعون خضعوا لفرتة 15 ساعة من التدريب قبل خدمتهم يف املعارض واستقبال زائري دار اآلثار اإلسالمية يف مركز االمريكاين الثقايف. ويطلب من املرشد التطوع ملدة ثالث ساعات عىل األقل شهريا، واملشاركة يف املناسبات الخاصة، مثل افتتاح املعارض، وزيارات كبار الشخصيات. تقدم دار اآلثار اإلسالمية التدريب

باللغتني العربية واإلنجليزية مرتني يف العام، مرة يف الخريف وأخرى يف الربيع.

أما الطالب املتدربون، فهم شباب يافع ترتاوح أعامرهم بني 13 و 16 عاما، يتم اختيارهم لربنامج ميتد لنحو 22 شهرا. فباإلضافة إىل عملهم كمرشدين، يدرس املشاركون يف هذا الربنامج خمسة تخصصات يف علم املتاحف، يختار الطالب يف ختامه تخصصني منها للتحضري إلقامة معرض. تقدم طلبات املشاركة يف برنامج متدريب املتاحف يف شهر مايو، ويتم اختيار

املشاركني يف شهر يونيو أما الدراسة، فتبدأ يف شهر سبتمرب.

Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah at Yarmouk Cultural Centre

About the time the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah was being established in Kuwait City, the Yarmouk Secondary School for Boys opened in Yarmouk. The school was a source of pride for the neighbourhood, educating young men from the area.

When new schools were built after liberation, His Highness the late Amir Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah saw the potential for the school to continue to be a source pride for the community as a special office dedicated to honouring the martyrs of the Iraqi invasion and occupation and serving the martyr’s families. As a gift from the Amiri Diwan, in recognition of the sacrifices made during the war, the Martyr’s Office was established and for almost two decades, called the school home.

When the Martyr’s Office moved to their new, purpose-built headquarters, it was important that the next occupant continue to serve the local community and Kuwait. The Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah once again found itself intersecting with the Yarmouk Secondary School for Boys, this time as tenant.

As part of the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah, the school will host lectures and films and concerts. It will open its doors to children, adults, families, senior citizens: everyone with an interest in art and cultural and community. Like the Amricani Cultural Centre and, ultimately, the Kuwait National Museum, Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah at Yarmouk Cultural Centre is a destination for art, culture, and conviviality.

تزامن افتتاح دار اآلثار اإلسالمية مع إنشاء مدرسة الريموك الثانوية للبنني يف الريموك، وكانت املدرسة مصدر فخر للمنطقة وتثقيف لشبابها.

وعندما تم بناء مدارس جديدة بعد التحرير، رأى صاحب السمو األمري الراحل الشيخ جابر األحمد الجابر الصباح، أن تستغل إمكانيات هذه املدرسة لتستمر فخرا للمجتمع بتحويلها إىل مكتب خاص لتكريم شهداء الغزو واالحتالل العراقي، وخدمة أرس الشهداء كهدية من الديوان األمريي، تقديرا لتضحيات الشهداء يف الحرب، فكان أن تم تأسيس مكتب الشهيد

يف هذه املدرسة، واستمر العمل فيه ملا يقرب من عقدين من الزمن.

وعندما انتقل مكتب الشهيد إىل مقره الجديد األفضل تجهيزا وخدمة للشهيد، كان البد أن يحافظ الشاغل الجديد للمبنى عىل استمرار الغرض منه وهو خدمة سكان املنطقة والكويت معا، وهكذا كان لدار اآلثار اإلسالمية موعدا آخر مع مدرسة

الريموك الثانوية للبنني، ولكن هذه املرة بصفة شاغل لها.

وكجزء من دار اآلثار اإلسالمية، ستستضيف مدرسة الريموك تحت مسامها الجديد وهو مركز الريموك الثقايف، املحارضات واألفالم واألمسيات املوسيقية، وسوف تفتح أبوابها لألطفال والكبار والعائالت، وجميع املهتمني واملعنيني بالفن والثقافة واملجتمع. سيكون مركز الريموك الثقايف كمركز االمريكاين الثقايف، ومتحف الكويت الوطني الحقا، وجهة للفن والثقافة

واملتعة معا.

The programme of events is accurate as the programme goes to print. However, during the course of the season there may be some changes with little or no advance warning. Every effort will be made to notify Friends of the DAI should a change be necessary.

Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah at Amricani Cultural Centre

Growth and change have been part of the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah since its inception in 1983. From galleries in the Kuwait National Museum to museums and cultural centres around the world, objects from The al-Sabah Collection have found homes (temporary or otherwise) in many worthy locations. Here in Kuwait, that home is the Amricani Cultural Centre.

Originally built by the RCA Arabian Mission as hospitals, the buildings that make up the Amricani Cultural Centre were created to serve the people of Kuwait. And serve they did, for four decades.

After a period of rehabilitation and renovation, the buildings were re-animated as a cultural centre and training museum. Today the buildings host four exhibitions: Story of Amricani, a multi-media presentation that tells the history of “Moustachfa Amricani”; Splendors of the Ancient East: Antiquities in The al-Sabah Collection, featuring magnificent objects from the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity; Splendors Loaned from the Kuwait National Museum, highlighting objects excavated in Kuwait from the same periods; and Long Ago Zoo: Animals in The al-Sabah Collection, an exhibition created and executed by children ages 6 – 12. The centre also hosts visiting exhibitions, expanding the art-related opportunities for people in Kuwait. In addition, the Amricani is an important part of the training programme that helps young Kuwaitis become part of the professional museum world in areas of conservation, facilities management, and exhibition planning and execution. Finally, it is also the administrative home of the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah.

Built to serve Kuwait, the Amricani Cultural Centre focus has changed, but the mission remains the same.

لطاملا كان النمو والتطور جزء من دار اآلثار اإلسالمية منذ إنشائها يف العام 1983. فمن صاالت العرض يف متحف الكويت الوطني، إىل متاحف ومراكز ثقافية حول العامل، حطت تحف مجموعة الصباح يف بيوتات مرموقة كثرية )مؤقتة أو غري

ذلك(، لتستقر أخريا يف بيتها هنا يف الكويت، يف مركز االمريكاين الثقايف.

بني مستشفى االمريكاين الذي أصبح مركز االمريكاين الثقايف، من قبل بعثة اإلرسالية األمريكية، لخدمة أهايل الكويت، ولقد قام بهذا الدور عىل مدى عقود أربعة.

بعد فرتة من التأهيل والتجديد وإعادة املبنى للحياة كمركز ثقايف ومتحف، أصبحت املباين تضم اليوم أربعة معارض: القديم: الرشق »روائع ومعرض االمريكاين، »مستشفى تاريخ يحيك الوسائط متعدد عرض وهو االمريكاين«، »قصة مختارات من مجموعة الصباح األثرية«، وهو معرض يضم تحفا ومتاثيل رائعة تعود إىل الفرتة من العرص الربونزي إىل العصور القدمية يف مراحلها املتأخرة. كام يستضيف املركز روائع معارة من متحف الكويت الوطني، تسلط الضوء عىل معثورات من أرض الكويت يف ذات الحقبة، عالوة عىل معرض »يف قديم الزمان: كانت حديقة للحيوان« وهو يعرض مقتنيات مختارة من مجموعة الصباح، أقامه وأرشف عىل تنفيذه أطفال ترتاوح أعامرهم ما بني 6 – 12. هذا، ويستضيف مركز االمريكاين الثقايف أيضا معارض من الخارج، ويستقبل الزائرين عىل مدار العام. كام يقدم فرصا للجمهور يف الكويت لتقديم أعامل فنية، باإلضافة إىل تقديم برامج تدريبية تساعد وتشجع الشباب الكويتي لخوض مجال املتاحف مهنيا، وذلك من خالل تدريبهم يف عدة مجاالت خاصة باملتاحف كالرتميم، وإدارة مرافق املتحف، وكيفية إقامة املعارض. وأخريا،

يضم مركز االمريكاين الثقايف أيضا املكاتب اإلدارية لدار اآلثار اإلسالمية.

وهكذا، أنشئ مركز االمريكاين الثقايف لخدمة الكويت، وتتطور اهتامماته عىل مر الزمن، لكن رسالته األساسية تبقى راسخة، أال وهي خدمة الكويت.

National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters

The National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL), under whose auspices the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah operates, was created in the early 1970s to offer governmental encouragement and support for the visual and lively arts in Kuwait. The Council was given three key responsibilities: facilitating the growth and development of art and artists in the country, promoting Kuwait’s cultural heritage at home and abroad, and encouraging research related to art and culture.

تعمل دار اآلثار اإلسامية تحت مظلة املجلس الوطني للثقافة والفنون واآلداب الذي تم تأسيسه يف بداية السبعينيات من القرن املايض، بهدف تقديم الدعم والتشجيع الحكومي للفنون يف دولة الكويت. ويضطلع املجلس مبسؤوليات ثالث الثقايف والتعريف به محليا ودوليا، وتشجيع األبحاث الكويت البالد، والحفاظ عى تراث الفن والفنانن يف هي: تطور
