Pony Tales from the PrezNashville Notes
From April i5th through April 18th, Nashville was
invaded by thousands of Mustangs for the Mustang
40tr Anniversary Celebration at the Nashville Super-
speedway. According to the best estimates, 4000Mustangs were pre-registered and another 4500
showed up on site for a total of 9500 Mustangs!
The opening ceremonies on Thursday included twoflyovers by Jack Rouse in his P-51 Mustang with arollover at the end. The cruise on Thursday evening in-volved six miles of bumper-to-bumper traffic to down-town Nashville with only a few of the GPMC members
making it there. Friday activities included a perform-ance at the Grand Ole Opry. On Saturday, GT-350 and
vintage Trans-Am races were held on the track. In the
evening, the General Jackson paddleboat cruise wentto downtown Nashville and back.Bridgestone burnouts were held Sunday aftemoon, and
a Shinoda orange Boss Mustang caught on fire. The
Charlie Daniels band performed for the closingceremonies: the band ended with his famous hit -"The Devil Went Down to Georgia".

Pony Tales from the Prez continuedfrom page 1
The biggest Mustang crowd was on Saturday, with cars parked half way around the racetrack. Some photos
are on the Mach i Registry website (www.machlregistry.com). Go to main menu, Message Forums. Then go
to Mach 1 Main Categories,'and then to Mach I General Discussion. Then go to thread "Anybody Have Any
Feedback from the 40e inNashville?" (The thread may be onp.2 or 3 of that forum.)
Two 2005 Mustang coupes were on display; they were occasionally started so we could hear the engines and
exhaust. The white coupe was a test vehicle, which was also seen on the racetrack. The engineering changes
for this vehicle are outstanding: better weight distribution, revised front and rear suspension, revised S-speed
manual and a 5-speed automatic, 300 horses in the GT, aluminum hood, and many others. Ford representatives
quoted the price on the V-6 coupe to be under $20,000, and for the V-8 coupe to be under $25,000 (for the 5-
speed manual transmission models).
In addition, Ford had an Escape hybrid on display. This combination gasoline/electric driven vehicle will be
the first SuV on the market and will go into production later this year or earlier next year. Gas mileage is said
to be 40 mpg in the city.
Overall, the Mustang 40e.Anniversary Celebration was a fantastic event and the MCA deserves a lot of thanks
for organizing it. --Ed

One of our GPMC members, Andy Schor, indirectlyhas NASCAR racing blood in his veins. Andy'sbrother's wife's grandfather was a NASCAR driver in
the late 50's and early 60's. His name is Jack Smithand he passed away in 2001. Jack's name is now onthe ballot for the "Talladega Walk of Fame". Some ad-ditional information about Jack is listed below.
Quote from "Legends of Racing":
NASCAR's most popular driver in 1958,
Jack Smith has 21 Grand national wins tohis credit, which places him 20th on the all-time win list. He also has over 600 victo-ries in the 'bullrings' and was voted into the
Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame in 1981. In1959, veteran announcer Buddy Davenportpinned the name 'Red Fox' on his '60Pontiac. "When that Red Fox gets out in
frong those hound dogs have a hard time catching it!' Jack
drove this car in such notable victories as the 1960
Firecracker 250 and the 1961 Volunteer 500 (the firstrace ai Bristol). The biggest victory of Jack's careerwould have been Charlotte's inaugural World 600 ini960. 'At Charlotte, for their first race, the track wasstill being paved, even after qualifying. The newpavement was tearing up real bad, so we added wiremesh to protect our radiators and 'mud flaps' to keepthe asphalt from being kicked up off our tires. I led198 of the 400 laps and was 5 laps ahead of the sec-ond-place car when disaster struck. A large chunk ofasphalt tore a hole in my fuel tank and gasoline camepouring out. We tried stuffing rags into the hole andeven tried Camay soap, but nothing would work I be-lieve if we would have had a bar of Octagon soap(because it was larger and softer) it would haveplugged the hole and not leake4 then I could havestill won the race. I would have never believed that abar of soap could be worth over $25,000!" --JackSmith
Hopefully some of our GPMC members will votefor Jack at www.talladegawalk.com.

I hope everyone has their ponies' ready to cruise in the40th anniversary year of the Mustang. It is so nice to see
the leaves on the trees once again green and to actuallysee the sun out during the day and the temperatures fi-naliy get into the cruising mnge. I spoke with some of thefolks that attended the celebration in Nashville, and wasinsured that not only was the weather great but everyonehad a fantastic time. What a great event to kick offthe2004 cruise season.
Just a reminder that next month's (May) general mem-bership meeting will once again move outdoors to NorthPark. It will be held at 7:30 pm at the Roosevelt Grove.
On May 14th the GPMC cruises at the Waterworks be-grn. The time for this event will be 5:00pm-10:00pm andI am looking forward to once again cruisingwith my fel-low club members and having fun. The cruise sponsoredby Kings will be a little different this year. Many mer-chants will be offering special discounts for all cruisers as
well as donating door prizes to be given away. The man-agement of the Waterworks are also excited to have theGPMC there for the events that we have planned. I wasreminded just the other day that although many otherclubs and organizations have approached the Waterworksconceming cruises, the GPMC are the only ones'thathave ever been granted the permission to go ahead andtake charge of having these events there. It's nice to knowthat our club has gained the reputation of respect andhas the confidence ofthe retailers to be the ones' chosento coordinate these events for them.
I am still working on putting together a number ofcruises in Harmar. The first is sldted for Mpy 21st andwill be held at the Wellness Center and Alexanders Fit-ness Center located at the old Cinema complex behindthe Ponderosa Restaurant on Freeport Road. Time for thiscruise is 6:00pm-10:00pm. Although the arrangements atthis point are only abott9}o/o complete there will bemore on this as time draws nearer.
On May 21st we will once again be back to the Water-works for a cruise, The general membership ineeting forJune will again be outdoors at Roosevelt Grove in NorthPark. June 1lth and 25th are cruise dates at the Water-works. All of these dates are posted on our website as
well as a half page article that will be placed in the Her-ald newspaper monthly.
Just one more reminder, the GPMC 6th annual All FordPowered Car Show will be held at McCrackin Ford onJune27th. Being the main fund-raiser for the GPMC myhope is that all club memben will come out and helpsupport and help out with this event. Sign-up sheets willbe on hand at the next general membership meeting oryou can get in touch with John LaMorte to help out.
