A Scout is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties. He re- spects the beliefs of others. The Boy Scouts of America, therefore, recognizes the religious element in the training of the member, but it is absolutely nonsectarian in its attitude toward that religious training. In no case where a unit is connected with a church or other distinctively religious organization shall members of other denominations or faith be required, because of their membership in the unit, to take part in or observe a religious ceremony distinctly unique to that organization or church. All Scouts now say the Scout Oath and Law, which include “duty to God” and “a Scout is Reverent.” The new Cub Scout requirements contain a duty to God element at every rank. Each Cub Scout handbook includes a series of age appropriate nonsectarian activities that help boys learn and demonstrate their duty to God. Each Cub Scout handbook also includes a discussion about the importance of religion in the boy’s life, together with examples of ways the boy can complete his duty to God requirement. Bear and Webelos ranks include an option for the Cub Scout to complete his duty to God requirement by earning the religious emblem for his age and faith. Since not all faiths have a religious emblem, and since not all congregations offer them, both the Bear and Webelos ranks have an alternate way to complete the duty to God requirement. If a Scout’s faith uses the same religious emblem for fourth and fifth grades, and if the Scout earns it as a Bear, he will need to complete the alternate requirement as a Webelos Scout. Cub Scout Campfire Programs: Much More than S’mores! This is the time of year that Cub Scout packs should be conducting their annual program planning meet-ings. A valuable element to include in the annual plan is a campfire, whether it is a separate pack meet-ing or possibly part of a pack camp out. Just as they are for Boy Scouts, pack campfires are a great way encourage the creativity of each Scout and to develop youth leadership skills, as well as a time to relax, unwind, and enjoy the experience of being in the outdoors. A successful campfire should contain fun, entertainment, fellowship, action, ad-venture, training, and inspiration. The time-tested formula for having a successful campfire is to include the Four S’s: Songs, Stunts, Sto-ries, and Showmanship. Leaders should consider a safe campfire area, how to encourage participation by all boys, and most of all, encourage everyone to have safe fun. To ensure that only appropriate materials are used, all materi-als should be prescreened. Cubmasters can help den leaders promote advancement for their boys by recognizing the various re-quirements that can be accomplished during a campfire. For example, the following Adventure require-ments are necessary for advancement at each appropriate level: Tiger— Tigers in the Wild 5. Participate in an outdoor pack meeting or pack campout campfire. Sing a song and act out a skit with your Tiger den as part of the program. Wolf – Call of the Wild 6. On the campout, participate with your family or den in a campfire show. Pre-pare a skit or song, and then present it at the campfire for everyone else. Wolf – Howling at the Moon 3. Work together with your den to plan, prepare, and rehearse a campfire program to present to your families at a den meeting. 4. Practice and perform your role for a pack camp-fire program. Bear – Bear Necessities 2. Attend a campfire show, and participate by performing a song or skit with your den. Bear – Roaring Laughter 6. Practice at least two run-ons with your den, and perform them at a pack meeting or campfire program. Arrow of Light Adventure: Camper 4. On a pack campout, work with your den leader or another adult to plan a campfire program with the other dens. Your campfire program should include an impressive opening, songs, skits, a Cubmaster’s minute, and an

inspirational closing ceremony. Webelos Scouts will be more successful in their planning their campfire if

their leader helps them use the Campfire Program Planner, which can be found at http://

www.scouting.org/forms.aspx

There are two parts to the tool, one for general planning, and a second for detailed planning of a specific

campfire’s program, i.e., skits, songs, etc., as well as responsibilities, ranging from emcee to fire safety

and cleanup. A campfire is a great activity for the pack. It will encourage advancement, engage all Cub

Scouts, and bring families together. It is also a great time to get everyone outdoors and to enjoy the

beauty of nature.
