Wuyun ‘Five Movements’
• 岁运 Suìyùn ‘Annual Yun’ (circulatory phase, cycle or period)
• Determined by yearly 天干 Tiāngàn ‘Heavenly Stem’ (ny?)
• General underlying influential climate over the entire year – Wind, Heat, Damp, Dry or Cold, corresponding to five viscera
• Yang stem years are termed 太过 Tàiguò ‘Excessive’ and are associated with more violent climate changes from the host damaging the wife
• Yin stem years are called 不及 Bùjí ‘Inadequate’ the host is weak and this deficiency leads to an excess of the husband (controlling) element

‘The East is Wood, its spirit Year Star, its days Jia & Yi.’
中央,土也, Zhōngyāng, tǔyě, 其神为镇星,

‘The Centre is Earth, its spirit Quelling Star,
its days Wu & Ji.’
南方,火也, Nánfāng, huǒyě, 其神为荧惑,

Calculating the Host Period
• 中运 Zhōngyùn 大运 Dàyùn ‘Central Movement’ ‘Great Movement’ Determined by the yearly heavenly stem
• Opposite pairs of stems correspond similarly
• The 太Tài ‘Major’ and 少 Shào ‘Minor’ notes of the Chinese pentatonic scale are traditionally used to represent the movement rather than yinyang pairings and five elements

丹天之气经于牛女戊分, dāntiān zhī qìjīng yú niúnǔ wùfēn, ‘the vermillion heaven qi meridian is at the constellations Cowheard & Maiden to the Yang-earth divisions (Stride & Wall constellations),’
黅天之气经于心房己分, jīntiān zhī qìjīng yú xīnfáng jǐfēn, ‘the yellow heaven qi meridian is at the constellations Heart & Chamber to the Yin-earth divisions (Horn & Chariot constellations),’
苍天之气经于室危柳鬼, cāngtiān zhī qìjīng yú shìwēi liǔguǐ, ‘the blue heaven qi meridian is at the constellations Encampment & Rooftop to Willow & Ghost,’
素天之气经于亢氐昴毕, sùtiān zhī qìjīng yú kàngdī mǎobì, ‘the white heaven qi meridian is at the constellations Neck & Root to Mane & Net,’
玄天之气经于张翼娄胃. xuántiān zhī qìjīng yú zhāngyì lóuwèi. ‘the dark heaven qi meridian is at the constellations Extend & Wings to Stomach & Bond.’

Annual Period for 2013
• The Annual Period for 癸 Guǐ ‘Yin water’ 2013 is Shao zhi ‘Minor Fire tone’ (Heat), but as it is Buji ‘Inadequate’ the host is diminished and the prevailing climate will be the controlling element, therefore – Yu ‘Water tone’ (Cold)

Suìhuǒ bùjí, hánnǎi dàxíng. Zāi jiǔgōng.
‘If year of fire is inadequate, cold therefore greatly prevails. Disasters occur in the 9th palace.’

• 伏明 Fúmíng ‘Hidden Brilliance’ arrangement
• No qi of growth, instead qi of storage, once things have blossomed they fall down, as soon as they are born they grow old, yang qi has yielded and is hidden
• If there is clearness in summer, winter will be harsh. If summer is chilling, there will be heavy storms out of season
Yu ‘Water Tone’
北方生寒,其德凄沧,其灾冰雪霜雹。 Běifāng shēnghán, qídé qīcāng, qízāi bīng xuě shuāng báo.
‘The northern region generates cold, its virtue is chilling darkness, its disasters are ice snow frost and hail’

• Water dominates fire (husband controls wife)
• Yang is weakened
• Chest pain, distension, shoulder / upper back & inside arm pain, oppression, dizziness, loss of consciousness, heart ache, muteness, lower back pain, bent posture, bone pain
Gong ‘Earth Tone’
复则埃郁,大雨且至,黑气乃辱。 Fùzé āiyù, dàyǔ qiězhì, hēiqì nǎirǔ.
‘Revenge follows with dust looming, heavy rain even extremely, black qi therefore is disgraced.’

• Earth takes revenge on water (son controls father)
• Dampness invades the spleen
• Diarrhoea, abdominal fullness, poor appetite, abdominal pain & cramping, coldness at the centre, borborygmus, abdominal cramping, intestinal obstruction, weakness of the limbs
Liuqi ‘Six Qi’
• 岁气 Suìqì ‘Annual Qi’ (climatic factor, atmospheric influence)
• Meteorological changes in the first and second halves of the year, 六气 Liùqì ‘Six Qi’ - windiness, imperial heat, dampness, ministerial fire, dryness and coldness
• Correspond to the 6 pairings of the body’s acupuncture channels - relative degrees of yin yang, linked to directions and energies
• Descending from above for the 1st half of the year is the 司天 Sītiān ‘Governing heaven’ qi. Joining from below in the 2nd half, the 在泉 Zàiquán ‘Residing fountain’ qi.

七月指申。 Qīyuè zhǐshēn. ‘In the 7th month it points to the monkey.’
正月指寅。 Zhēngyuè zhǐyín.
‘In the 1st month it points to the tiger.’
三月指辰。 Sānyuè zhǐchén.
‘In the 3rd month it points to the dragon.’
四月指巳。Sìyuè zhǐsì. ‘In the 4th month
it points to the snake.’
五月指午。Wǔyuè zhǐwǔ. ‘In the 5th month
it points to the horse.’ 六月指未。Liùyuè zhǐwèi. ‘In the 6th month
it points to the goat.’
九月指戌。 Jiǔyuè zhǐxū. ‘In the 9th month it points to the dog.’
八月指酉。 Bāyuè zhǐyǒu. ‘In the 8th month it points to the rooster.’
十一月指子。Shíyīyuè zhǐzǐ. ‘In the 11th month ‘ it points to the rat.’
十月指亥。Shíyuè zhǐhài. ‘In the 10th month
it points to the pig.’
十二月指丑。Shíèryuè zhǐchǒu. ‘In the 12th month it points to the ox.’
二月指卯。 Èryuè zhǐmǎo.
‘In the 2nd month it points to the rabbit.’
Calculating the Guest Energies • Determined by the yearly earthly branch
• Opposite pairs of branches correspond similarly
• When the ‘Governing heaven’ qi is determined, the ‘Residing Fountain’ qi is located three divisions further in a clockwise direction

• Stem and branch / movement and branch, same – annual agree/year coincidence, suihui (mildest?)
• Yang stem movement qi and fountain qi same – total heavenly tallying/resemblance to celestial agree, tongtianfu (mild?)
• Yin stem movement qi and fountain qi same -total heavenly agreement, tongsuifu (milder?)
