Chiang Mai University was founded in 1964, under a royal Charter granted by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.It was the first institution of higher education in the north, and the first provincial university in Thailand.

Since its opening with three founding Faculties of Science, Social Sciences, and Humanities, CMU has developed to a comprehensive institution of higher learning providing a board range of academic programs with 20 faculties, College of Arts, Media and Technology, International College and Graduate School.
