Former pupil Colin Groves CO80 returned to Truro School, all the way from New Zealand, to give Sixth Form students an interesting insight to his long and successful career.

university, but decided engineering wasn’t for him.

A Truro School Connected event took place last Thursday, 10 October, with a record 80 guests registering for this year’s event, held at the Sarasin & Partners LLP offices, which overlooks the front steps of St Paul’s Cathedral.

Alumni ranging from CO48 to CO15 gathered to share fond recollections of Truro School as well as report their achievement since leaving . The evening was hosted by current headmaster, Andrew Gordon-Brown who was joined by former headmasters Paul Smith (2001-2012) and Guy Dodd (1993-2001).

Nancy Kenward, Head of Careers, attended to promote Truro School Connected, said: ‘Chatting to alumni, some of whom I have not met before and

some who are already helping with this initiative, I am reminded of the wealth of knowledge and experience within the Truro School Community. Endeavouring to harness this incredible force for the benefit of our current students is a very exciting prospect: it provides a unique knowledge base which offers invaluable guidance and advice, not only to our Sixth Form students but also to recent leavers, and our new alumni just beginning their career journey’.

Nicky Berridge, Development and Alumni Manager said: ‘This event has gone from strength to strength over the past 4 years with attendance this year exceeding our expectations. It was a pleasure to welcome so many new faces, attending a reunion event for the first time, as well as welcoming back our regular attendees’.

Jayne Grigg, , Director of Admissions and Development, echoed these words: ‘It was great to hear what everyone is doing now, their interesting careers, some weddings, some births... future pupils, I hope!

‘It would seem our alumni are everywhere and, what is so wonderful for us, are all keen to maintain their link with the school and help in our many ventures, whether the Truro School Foundation or Truro School Connected or, simply, to keep in touch. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did’.

Lower Sixth Geography Students visit Jurassic Coast

Oxbridge Tea

The Lower Sixth have been dodging showers and enjoying the world-famous Jurassic Coast, including Old Harry’s Rocks, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, Portland, Chiswell, Chesil Beach and West Bay on their geography field trip.

The field trip provides essential information for their A-Level coastal unit in which they look at processes and landforms in coastal zones and also how the coast provides opportunities for human activities and how these require management of both the positive and negative impacts.

Teachers’ House Quiz

Truro School hosted an Oxbridge tea yesterday evening, designed to give students mock interview experiences in preparation for a real interview.

Local Sixth Formers gathered in the SBASC including Liskeard School, Launceston College, Camborne Sceince Acadamy, Truro High School, Helston Community College, Budehaven School, Bodmin College, Saltash School and Newquay Tretherras. The students then split off around the school in accordance with their chosen degree.

Teachers and Support Staff descended on the Burrell Theatre this week to battle it out in a quiz organised and hosted by Sixth Form students. Congratulations to Wickett on 1st Place and Vinter on 2nd and thank you to the Sixth Form for organising!

North Cornwall Book FestivalTruro School Book Club attended the annual North Cornwall Book Festival last Friday, for its seventh year. They got to meet Irish author John Boyne, best known for his Young Adult novel ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’. He gave a fascinating talk about his new novel, ‘My Brother’s Name is Jessica’, as well as top writing tips.

Matt Windle, know as the ‘Poet with Punch’ delivered a fascinating spoken-word workshop, encouraging students to use poetry as a means of expression.

Finally, Kernow Youth Book Award winner, Liz Kessler, gave a brilliant workshop on creative writing, against the stunning backdrop of St Endellion Church.

The pupils had a fantastic day, receiving professional, real life writing skills for a variety of styles.

Truro School Sailors Organise Racing EventOn Wednesday, Truro School sailors participated in the first team racing event of the year, against Truro High School. The event was held at St Mawes Sailing Club, organised and run by Henry Hallam.

The sailors participated in a series of six races, where they raced in a partnership with another boat, using both boat speed and tactical knowledge of sailing rules to attempt to out-manoeuvre their opponents.

Congratulations to Sam C and Henry D who secured a win, with Oli L and Ed D close behind, in second. Well done to Will S, and Hugo C who also showed very impressive sailing and sportsmanship skills on the water. Thanks to St Mawes Sailing Club for hosting.Report by Henry H

In line with the launch of our brand new well-being programme, we are starting a new Teen Yoga club from 4-5pm every Thursday, commencing on the first week after half term.

Yoga has many benefits, including:• increased flexibility and strength,• improved posture,• deep breathing and oxygenation of the body, • sleep promotion, • acceptance of body image,• fostering tolerance and respect in oneself and others

... and many more!

Against preconceived ideas, yoga is not just for girls, and not just about stretching.

If anyone is interested, please email MrsMrs Monnier Gilchrist on [email protected].

Coming Soon... Ease your stress with yoga Missing Uniform

A number of pupils have lost named items of school uniform this half term. Please can I ask all parents to check

their child’s uniform over the half term break and make sure they do not have any items which belong to other pupils. If you do find uniform which belongs to another pupil please could you take it

to the main school office.

Thank you
