Welcome to Lomax! Volume 50, Number 15 Sunday, April 9, 2006 Published By The Lomax Church of Christ 320 Darbytown Road Hohenwald Tennessee 38462 www.lomaxchurch.com [email protected] Welcome to Friends and Family Day! We’re glad you’re here today! I hope you will stay and eat lunch with us and listen to our young men in the Lads to Leaders program conduct our afternoon devotional. We are so proud of the work our young men and women have done in this great leadership training program. After our second service, you will have an opportunity to hear all of our young people who have been working on song leading, Bible reading, and giving speeches. I think you will be very proud of them and the good work they are doing as they train to be active Christians in the Lord’s work. Speaking of leaders, thank you for all the kind remarks and support you showed our elders who served on the discussion panel last Sunday evening. It went very well and it was good to hear our elders speak to us about the Scriptures. A very special thank you to Steve Edwards, Bill Lawson, Yogie Spears, and Rick Morrow for being willing to take part in our panel. Thanks to those of you who turned in questions, too. We will do this again at a later date! Today is the first day to submit names of men you would like to see serve this congregation as an elder. See the article on page 4 for more information about the elder selection process. Please keep it in your prayers! Perhaps the greatest news we have to share is the decision that Paxson Spears and Mashaya Hinson made Thursday night to be baptized. Why not drop them a note of congratulations and encouragement this week? A special welcome to our guests! We are glad to have you visiting with us today! You are welcome here. We know you have a choice of where to worship, and you chose to be with us today — thank you. At Lomax we want to be the church we read about in the Bible. Our goal is to glorify God with our worship and with our lives and to point people to Jesus Christ. If you need anything during the service, ushers in the lobby can direct you to restrooms, the nursery, or a telephone. Please do us the favor of filling out a blue card located on the back of the pew in front of you. If you have any questions or if we can help you, please let us know while you are here or call 796-5381. -David 9:00 am Bible Class 10:00 am Worship Fellowship meal in the Christian Service Center 1:00 pm Worship (LLL participants) We rejoice that Paxson Spears and Mashaya Hinson were baptized this past Thursday! appointed as additional elders.

A SPECIAL WELCOME to all our visitors. We are glad you came our way. You are always welcome at Lomax….Don’t forget to join us for lunch following our worship services and we hope you can remain for the 1:00 service. Thanks in advance to our Lads to Leaders/Leaderettes for the great program in which they are involved. You can see some of this talent in action this afternoon….Remember the gospel meeting at Riverside this week. I don’t recall who sent the following but it is worthy of thought leading to implementation: TURN IT AROUND: “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country!” This challenge, made famous by a former president, suggests a like principle which should guide our attitude toward the church. Ask not, therefore….

...whether this is a good congregation of which to be a member, but ask whether I am a good member of this congregation. …how much I am loved, but how much love I am showing. …how many get-well cards I received, but how many I have sent to others. ...who visited me, but whom have I visited. ...who did or did not speak to me, but how many others I greeted. ...whether my good work is recognized, but whether or not I gave honor to whom honor is due. ...how many of my prayer requests God has granted, but how grateful I am for His many blessings. ...to what extent my deeds have profited me now, but how my life will be remembered when I am gone.

“Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 2:4,5).

On The Lighter Side: Mark: I always talk to my flowers, and I believe they’ll eventually talk back! Megan: Don’t waste your time: they’re mums!

Sermon Briefs: No one lives forever; therefore, death is not the issue. Life is. Death need not be a failure. Not choosing to take on the challenge of life is. Thus, how long will we live? This is not the question. The real question is when will we begin to live! Life is not measured in years but in moments...in service...in relationships...in making the world a better place in which to live...in glorifying the One who gave us life so that we could live today and live forever!

“The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.” 1 Timothy 3:1(ESV)

Today begins a period of 15 days that our elders have set aside for you to nominate men to serve as elders. Many of you have asked questions about the process and I wanted to take some bulletin space this week to answer some of them. Several of you have asked if the men selected will replace all or some of our current elders. In addition, some of you have wondered if there is a set number of men that will be appointed. The elders that will be appointed will be in addition to our current elders, they will not replace anyone. All five of our current elders will continue to serve. There is no set number of men to be appointed to the eldership, rather we are looking for qualified men who are willing to serve. I have seen congregations go through a process like this and not appoint anyone because the time was not right. Many of you have questions about the nomination process, as well. If you have a man in mind that meets the qualifications of Scripture as outlined in 1 Timothy 3, Titus 1, and 1 Peter 5, then you should ask that individual if he would be willing to serve as an elder. If he agrees, then give his name to one of our current elders. It is best if you write down the name and sign your own name to the nomination. It is important to emphasize that you should talk with the individual before you submit his name. Do not turn in the name of a man if you do not know whether or not he is willing to serve as an elder. As we talk about “submitting names” in a “nomination process” and “installing” these men, it often sounds like an election or a political process. It is not. In fact, it is just the opposite. This is not a voting matter — elders are not selected based on popularity. It is not a reform school — you don’t make a man an elder in hopes that he will grow up and become a stronger Christian. We are looking for men that are already qualified to serve as elders. This process is designed to recognize those men that God has gifted with leadership skills. I hope you will daily pray for this process and our elders.
