The primary sector
All businesses can be broadly grouped according to the sector of industry they fall into.
The primary sector is the first main industry sector. Primary sector businesses are involved in the production and extraction of raw materials.
What primary sector businesses can you think of in your local area?
Examples include:
agricultureforestry fishingmining and extraction.

Agriculture
What is meant by the term agriculture?
Agriculture, or farming, involves:
the cultivation of soil for the growing of crops, such as vegetables and cereals;
the rearing of animals to provide food, wool and other products.
Can you think of any events in recent times that have had a significant effect on farming?

Forestry
What is meant by the term forestry?
Forestry involves:
planting, conserving and felling timber;
studying, managing and caring for forests;

Fishing
What sort of activities are involved in fishing?
Fishing involves catching fish for food. This includes:
fishing fleets (marine fishing);
finfish farms, such as trout, salmon and carp farms;
shellfish production, such as muscle, oyster and clam farms.
Investigate the different forms of fishing activity in more detail. What important issues are
currently affecting the industry?

Mining and extraction
What sorts of materials are mined or extracted?
Mining and extraction includes:
coal mining;
salt production.
Are there any extractive businesses in your local area? Investigate what has happened
to them in recent years.
oil and natural gas extraction;
stone, slate, gravel, clay and sand quarrying;
