Creating your own oil pastel study

1. Choose your viewpoint. Pick something with lots of colour and texture.

2. Choose your paper – oil pastel works well on coloured or black paper.

3. Use a light coloured pastel for your initial drawing. Don’t press too hard.

4. Begin adding the colour. Oil pastels blend easily together, so use lots of colours on top of each other.

5. Add detail and mark-making last.

Oil pastels

Be careful not to blend too much, or the colours will become muddy and dull.

Oil pastels are easily blended together to create interesting effects because they can be smeared and rubbed after they are applied.
