THE NEWSLETTER OF THE FRASER VALLEY BRITISH MOTOR CLUB * APRIL, 2012 * VOLUME 18 * ISSUE NO. 4 *
1952 AUSTIN ATLANTIC
TOUTED AS “THE ANSWER” FOR THE AMERICAN MARKET AND ITS “OVER-THE-TOP” STYLING.
WHAT WAS THE QUESTION AGAIN??
2
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – APRIL, 2012 The driving season is upon us. We have been blessed with some sunny days. Lots of classic and vintage cars on the road. Yesterday coming back from the Vintage Car Races at Mission, I passed John Waite’s 1929 Rolls Royce Springfield. As always, John and his wife were dressed in period costume cruising down Highway 1. At the races I met Malcolm Reith from North Vancouver, whose daily driver for the last 20 years is a 1962 E Type OTS. What a beautiful car. The LAMB group’s St. Georges car show was last Sunday, April 22. It
unofficially marks the start of Classic car season. That’s a fun show, well presented in the beautiful setting of historic Fort Langley. Every year they get a terrific selection of British cars. Last year a Lagonda showed up fresh from a Class Win at Pebble Beach. Even the spectators show up in great cars. The guys from Jelly Bean Restorations showed up in their magnifacint 1938 BMW 328 Cabriolet. If you missed it you may be able to catch it at this year Pebble Beach in August. Also don’t miss the many great old shops and landmarks that Fort Langley has to offer. Cultus Lake Park will be hosting a drop-in show and shine in the Plaza, every Wednesday evening starting in May, weather permitting. Bob, Jerry and Harv are busy organizing the Minter Show set for July. Ivan is preparing for the Fun Run in June. The ABFM is in May. The events calendar will be full.
Should be a great year. LarryLarryLarryLarry

March’s Mystery Car was a LEA-FRANCIS 14HP (2.5 LITRE) SPORTS
Like many car companies, the Coventry firm of Lea-Francis started out in life as bicycle manufacturers and built their first motorcar in 1904. Throughout the 1920s and ‘30s they concentrated on building small, sporting models such as the Hyper and the Ace of Spades which enjoyed much competition success. The 12hp and the 14hp were introduced in 1937 and continued until 1939 when the factory concentrated on the war effort.
Post-war car production commenced in 1946 with updated vehicles based on the pre-war designs. The 14hp Saloon and Sports were luxurious and sporty vehicles and were well-received, if expensive, appealing to those who preferred individuality and craftsmanship to run of the mill mass production. By 1950 an improved chassis with independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes was introduced across the range and the aluminium-bodied 2.5-litre
Sports was launched.
The 120bhp four-cylinder engine had twin carbs and high-lift camshafts which gave the car an impressive 100mph top speed. However, high gearing and a low-revving nature made it more a tourer than a sports car, although it did enjoy some success in rallying. The styling was particularly attractive with more than a hint of the pre-war BMW 328 about it but, being hand-built in small numbers, it could hardly compete with cars like the cheaper Jaguar XK120 and only 85 were made before production came to an end in early 1953. MIKE MIDDLETON KNEW THIS ONE RIGHT AWAY, BECAUSE HE USED TO OWN ONE!!
THIS MONTH’S MYSTERY CAR MANY WILL KNOW WHAT THIS IS, BUT IT’S JUST SO DARN PRETTY I HAD TO PUT
IT IN!!

MORE OLD ADS:
WHAT’S A SIXTIES MOTOR MAGAZINE ADVERT WITHOUT A SPOT OF SEXIST DOUBLE

I’M NO SCIENTIST, BUT I DO KNOW THAT BOILING A PINT OF WATER TAKES RATHER MORE THAN “PRACTICALLY NOTHING”. PERHAPS THEY MEANT TO SAY “BOILS WHILE YOU DRIVE THE ENTIRE GREAT NORTH ROAD BEFORE SCALDING YOUR FEET WHEN YOU BRAKE A BIT
SHARPISH FOR A LAY-BY”.
