The Reader’s Journey (RJ)Grades 6-8 Designed for today’s middle school classroom, The Reader’s Journey is a standards-based program that combines the flexibility of a leveled library with the comprehensive curriculum coverage that has been a hallmark of Pearson language arts programs. Novels are aligned to The Big Question, however, the program is flexible enough that you may choose any novel you wish.
Prentice Hall Literature Libraries (PHMS, PHHS)Pearson has teamed up with publishers around the world to bring you the most comprehensive novels for your literature classroom. Teaching support is available for some of these novels on our Literature Library Teaching Resources CD-ROM and online in PearsonRealize.com.

Reading LevelsStudents in your classroom will have different reading abilities – some will be reading above level and some below. When available, we have provided the reading level or Lexile level for each novel so you can select titles to meet the needs of your students.
Middle School or High SchoolThis level indicates if the content is appropriate for middle or high school students.
Reading levelThe reading level indicates the grade level the novel is written for. The reading level is lower,
however, the interest level for these novels is for middle and high school students.
Common Core State StandardsThe Common Core State Standards has identified texts that exemplify the level of complexity
and quality that the Standards require all students in a given grade band to engage with.
These “Exemplar Texts” are suggestive of the breadth of texts that students should encounter in the text types required by the Standards. The choices should serve as useful guideposts in
helping educators select texts of similar complexity, quality, and range for their own classrooms. They expressly do not represent a partial or complete reading list.
Prentice Hall is pleased to offer Exemplar Texts through either the Prentice Hall Literature Common Core Edition or through our novel selections. Exemplar Texts are identified with the
Common Core icon throughout this brochure.
Lexile levelThe Lexile measure refers to a novel’s text difficulty.
Lexile measures are based on two well-established predictors of how difficult a text is to comprehend: word frequency and sentence length. For more
information, visit www.lexile.com.
DK ReadersDK Readers are aimed at different reading abilities. Level 3 is for students able
to read alone, and Level 4 is for proficient readers.

3The NP code is for any book comprising more than 50% non-standard or non-conforming prose. NP books do not receive a Lexile measure, merely the NP code. Some common examples of non-prose content are poems, plays, songs, recipes, and text with non-standard or absent punctuation. Since the Lexile Framework is based on prose analysis, Maurice Sendak’s Alligators All Around (HarperTrophy) is coded NP. The text of the book is not in complete sentences and lacks punctuation entirely. The text difficulty of such a book cannot currently be assigned a Lexile measure.

9The NP code is for any book comprising more than 50% non-standard or non-conforming prose.

15The NP code is for any book comprising more than 50% non-standard or non-conforming prose.

21The NP code is for any book comprising more than 50% non-standard or non-conforming prose.

27The NP code is for any book comprising more than 50% non-standard or non-conforming prose.
