Understand the time commitment necessary to succeed in the college classroom

Many do not realize that they may have to make lifestyle changes in order to accommodate students, prepare lectures, answer e-mails and phone calls, and grade assignments and exams.

Adjunct faculty, depending on the course level and amount of written assignments, could spend approximately 5 to 10 hours per week preparing and modifying their course in addition to classroom time.

New adjunct faculty should always ask for copies of previous syllabi

These can be obtained from the faculty lead for the subject area or the department

This allows new adjuncts to obtain a sense of what has been taught previously and how past instructors met course objectives

Departmental Mentors

Seek out mentors within the department in your program area

This is an effective way to bridge the gap between tenured, tenure-track, and contract faculty

A departmental mentor can be invaluable to new adjunct faculty who want to improve their teaching methods and strategies
