When the war finished he took part in almost everY long distance trial for which one of the new "Light" cars or "Cyclecars" could be entered. His vigorous methods, allied to a fervent desire to get everything possible from the engine, led to highly exciting trouble. At nearlY every race meetingat Brooklands from 1921

onwards there were AstonMartins, the drivers beingZborowski, Kensington Moir,Gallop, Eyston, or Douglas,-andthougi theY attained no strikingdegree of success against theirprincipal rival the A.C., theY

were never out of the Picture'Furthermore the cars wereextremelY attractive both indesign and shaPe, and thatcorrnted from the enthusiast'spoint of view.

HistorY justifies the effort inany case since the records showthit Bertelli and Pat Driscollwon the Le Mans "Rudge

Whitworth CouPe Bienniale"easily in 1932, that Driscoll andPen Hughes were second forthat same CuP in 1'933, and that

the two Charles, BrackenburYand Martin, won again in 1935'

As 1935 drew to its close

things were not too haPPY withthe firm. It seemed obvious thatracing was PlaYing too large a

nart in its activities, absorbingioo much money, while cars

with saloon bodies were moreand more in demand even in the

world of sports cars. The second

stage of Aston's historY hadcome to an end'

But any storY of the earlYdays cannot close without one

incident. In 1937 two fervententhusiasts, Mortimer Morris-Goodall and Robert Hichens,ran at Le Mans, the Z-litre carbeing Robert's own' And theY*or1h" Rudge CuP for the thirdtime in dramatic stYle. Havingfought into the lead for the CuP

the car was going well when a

valve fell into a cYlinder, nearlYwrecking the engine. Robert,who was driving, naturallY did

not think it worth going on -after all it was his Private car'

But the Point was that onlY one

hour of th" ."c" remained, so

the Cup would still be wonorovided the machine wasrunning when the finishing flagflew. Of this Robert naturallYL""* nothing, But his "control"did.

There followed a real disPIaY

of sportsmanshiP' Anothercompetitor, DorothY StanleY-

description of the Aston'sprogress to the pit. But it gotthere, the cylinder was put outof action, and the car restartedso that it crossed the line exactlyas the flag signalled the finish,

The second World Warchanged everything. It wasn't somuch the bomb damage, but thesocial and economic upheavalswhich upset Lagonda and AstonMartin. Lagonda wanted to gointo production with a new six-cylinder twin-cam engine, and anall-independent chassis, whichW.O. Bentley thought was rightfor the postwar world. [The V-12design, incidentally, had beenabandoned completely.l AstonMartin just wanted to go on -well, just go on being AstonMartin.

In both cases it was a surerecipe for financial disaster.Alan Good put Lagonda in thehands of the receiver in 1947,and R.G. Sutherland just foundit impossible to get Claude Hill's'Atom'[and its new high-pushrod four-cylinder 2litreengineJ into small-scaleproduction. At this point, theamazingly patriotic character -and I use the word 'character'advisedly - of David Browncame on to the scene, AlmostIike waving a wand,David Brown decided to buy upboth concerns ['for a bit of fun',as he has later admitted), andbefore the end of the year theywere under his control.This text was taken from a publicationwritten by Sammy Davis in 1950.

They even intruded intoGrand Prix racing in 1922, witha 16-valve, ohc engine owingits design mainly to CliveGallop, He did some M1b-typenegotiations with his old firmPeugeot, returning with ascaled-down version of the latestPeugeot racing engine design.

But it was the side-valve-engined car nicknamed "Bunny"which did most to create thelegend, There was an intensebattle for official records at thattime, Towards the end of 1922"Bunny" was taken toBrooklands to attack records butthe plan for the run was kepttop-secret, Outwardly itappeared to be an attack on the"Double L2-hour" record, that isa record run for 12 hours on twoconsecutive days, not of courserecognized'as International butimportant nationally. To makethe attempt more exciting, A,C,swere also running, apparentlyfor the same record, the twocars having depots full ofmechanics within sight of eachother.

The Aston took the 15, 76, 17,18 and 19-hour records, makingthe Aston the first small carever to capture World's records,Our average was just over 70.Naturally there was vigorouscompetition between the A.C.and the Aston Martin since bothcompeted for the same market,

In 1923 Lionel determined totackle the 1,500 c.c. class hourrecord with a view to putting100 miles in that time before theA,C. could. The 16-valve ohcpower unit was fitted to astrange chassis, exaggeratedly"crab" tracked, with an evennarrower body - as narrow whenviewed end on as to suggest whatit was named, a "Razor Blade".This machine became as famousas "Twiggy" for the same reason,and was the inspiration of the carmotif used in the BritishRacing Drivers' Club badge.

Many A.M./s were nicknamedat this time, for example|,C. Douglas' "Nigger",R.C. Morgan's "Green Pea" tomention but two. But though thefame of Aston Martin rested ona fim foundation, and thoughthe cars ran with honour inmany races at home and abroadthe financial situation wasimpossible, though LordCharnwood did all he could. Soin 1925 the first phase of themarque ended, The second wasvery different,

The revival in 1926 with theaid of Lord Charnwood and TheHon. lohn Benson brought inthe Birmingham firm ofRenwick and Bertelli, In fact thewhole character of Astonscontinued simply because of theman most of us knew as "ourBert".

The new works at Felthamwas very different from thatused in the infancy of AstonMartins, just as the entire carcarrying the name was different.But, as usual, there was aproblem, Since finance did notallow the kind of advertising

campaign a new car needed,obviously racing offeredadvantages. But the car wasintended to be a sports car to beused in normal motoring by itsowner, to have speed enough forthe job but reliability as its chiefasset.

David Brown threw enormousenergy into his Aston Martinconcern resulting in themanufacture of DB AstonMartins from the DB1 throughto the DBSVS

In 1972 ComPanYDevelopments Ltd acquiredAston Martin-Lagonda for S100

and accepted their debts.This comPany continueddevelopment of the VB Saloonbut more recentlY Aston Martin-Lagonda has been taken over bY

another organisation which hasrapidly developed the VB Saloonand also produced severalexciting new rnodels which arenow being activelY Promotedworld-wide again.

To regress for but a moment,it is not possible to relate thestory of this great marquewithout a brief look at theillustrious racing historY of theDavid Brown Astons and thecurrent Astons being develoPedfor Endurance racing, inparticular the illusive Le Mans,the occasion of Astons greatestvictory.

It started when the PrototYPeDB1 won the Spa 24 hour racein 1948 and finished with thewin by the Project 214 atMontlhery in 1-963, Astons have,of course, been raced PrivatelYsince then in particular the VBthat ran at Le Mans,in the mid-1970s and now the NimrodAstons.

1959 was the golden Year for

Aston Martin on the racingcircuits. In that Year AstonMartin won the Le Mans24 hour race and also the WorldChampionship after several nearmisses. The Project 214 wasleading at Le Mans in 1"963

when they returned from theIACE.

1963 was the end of thedecade of Sports-Racing Cars,the like of which we will neversee again. The battles betweenMercedes, |aguar, Aston Martin,Femari were to be no more as

regulations changed andcompanies were unable tosustain the continued enormousinvestment. Oh, for the GoodOld Days!

BATHURSTHILL CLIMB

2nd MaY, 1982

This Hill Climb was organisedby the Bathurst Light Car CIub,and was on the Mt Panoramaracing circuit using the hill fromthe end of conrod back uP to thetop straight, About 10 memberswere in attendance from our CIubwith about 70 cars in all.

The Club Social SecretarYcame up with his usual highclass hotel accommodation forSaturday night.

President Bill drove uP onSunday morning in the Ferrariand put in some verY good timesconsidering his rear tYreswere bald.

Bernie and ]eannie Leimeistercame from DaPto to give theiropen wheeler Renmax somequick runs.

John and Sue HaIl in the redDB4GT had some runs at the hillbut the rare engine was notin tune.

Lionel and Gail Walker wereconfident that the XK would do

well and, as usual, it did. What a

great club car.Roland and Graham Clark had

the AC Cobra at the event buthad some trouble keePing it in a

straight line.The weather was wonderful

with bright winter sun after a

cool morning. The light CarClub have club rooms at the footof the hill climb and lots ofparking for cars. About 15 cars

would do the climb and wait at

the top and all drive down theway they had gone uP.

This was a very good clubday. Any type of car could havebeen used with complete safety.

Our club did very well withLionel Walker achieving thefastest time in the over 2850 ccproduction, with a time of35.98; Graham Clark in Cobrasecond with 36.94, Bill Marshallwon the over 1600 cc with a

time of 35.65, Bernie Leimeisterwas fourth in the racingclassification with a time of34.98. Ray Ross was first in thesuper modified with 34.23,Fastest time of the day was31,00 (not a member of our club),

The expressway to Newcastlewas all too much for Clive -he waited for us at Tamworth.

The Dino fluffed on4 cylinders all the way up, withmany stops en route.

]im Peters and Geoff made thefirst of the car swaps.]im's multi-horsepoweredScimitar, with Geoff behind thewheel and on the gas, makes animpressive sight at 130, withsparks flying from the scrapingexhaust system on every bumP,

Lunch was a little hard toprocure in Scone - we ended uP

with sandwiches bought fromthe local shop and eaten in thepub,

Scone to Tamworth was anuneventful trip. On arrival were-introduced ourselves to Clivewho immediately corrected thefault in Bruce's Dino - one ofthe carbys minus linkage,a quick fix, and greasedlightning once again!

A few drinks at the motelbefore dinner in a quaint littlerestaurant, the name of whichescapes me, The meal was a

delight and the wine flowed likewater. ]im managed to gethimself involved in a game ofmastermind over GP racing butwe contrived to whisk him awaybefore we were thrown out ofthe restaurant,

Sunday morning the chamoiswere out for a quick wipe overthen on to Nundle for thejudging. About 40 km ofwinding back road was a delightat 90-100 but Clive once againfound it all too much andopened out the DB - this timewith ]im right behind - and infront-andbehind,,.

The Concou., nad oodles ofnice cars, ranging from vintagemodels to brand new. A fewoutstanding cars were:a GT Falcon with 2000 km onthe clock; a frog eye Sprite inbetter than showroom condition;Rolls Royce, Astons andTriumph etc,

The day lacked something -a motorcana might have been astabilising influence. The ladieswere bored stiff by Iunchtime,a situation which might havebeen avoided by thearrangement of a Ladies Event.

I haven't seen any results asyet, but of our group whoentered, I am sure we weren't inthe running! Not for quality ofcars, but for lack of sufficientclasses!!l As:-

*4 cylinder Dinos*Astons with no brakesAfter lunch we headed for

home, having a reasonably non-eventful drive back. ]im and Iswapped cars after I fixed mypassenger window which hadjammed down and the Dinojoined the Boy Scouts andpractised tying knots in itswipers. The traffic was murderbut we all arrived home safely -amazingly without the loss of asingle point.

GAffi$[lruilARE YOU INSURED?

Personal Accident insurance is com-pulsory for all open events, and for clos-ed race meetings. This means that alldrirers and officials at those meetingsre covered for benefits as prescribed inthe Manual of Motor Sport.

For all motorkhmas, and all closedevents other than race meetings,insurance is optional. For competitors itis quite easy - they make the choicethemelves, and indicate on the entryfom whether they want to be coveredo{ not. lf so, they pay the fee and that is

the end of it.

For officials it is not so easy. They relyupon the orgmisers to look after theirint€rests and we note with regret thatmmy organisers do not PaY the fee tohave their officials insured. Formotorkhanas. all officials can be

insured for $4.00 per daY not each,but to cover everyone; for the otherevents for which cover is optional, alloffrcials can be covered for $l0per day.

Of course, it is necessary lhat organiserscompile a list of officials md theirdesignation, but one would expect thatthis would be the case anYwaY.

We urge organisers of closed rallies,speed evenls and motorkhans to giYe

comideration to providing som protec-tion for the people who help mak€ ithappen for competitors.

The other message of course is to those

officials who may have been under some

illusion - check with the organisers ofthe event at which you are bfficiating inorder to determine whether or not you

have Personal Accident insurance coverwhilst on the event.

CAMS OFFICERSA number of appoinlment\ Io variouspositions within the Confederation'sstructure have been confirmed by theNational Council.First. Harry Firth has been appointed tothe Eligibility Committee. Hany was

formerly CAMS National Chief Scrut-ineer, and his expertise will continue tobe put to good use in this new role.Garry Boyd and Peler Warneford have

been appointed Regional ScrutineersiGany for Victoria, Tasmania apd SouthAustralia, and with Peter looking afterNew South Wales and Queensland.Both are well known to racing com-pelitors as Chief Scrutineers at majormeetings.David Rapley, formerlY a member ofthe Historic Car Committee and theHistoric Car Classification Comittee,hm been appointed Technical Officer/Historic Cars. This is a new position,and David will be resPonsible forspecific technical advice to theAdministration pertaining to historicactivity.

PEKING TO PARISWe have been advised bY Mr. WyltonDickson that the Peking to Paris Motor-ing Challenge organised under theauipices of the French Automobile

SDort Federalion, ha: had to beposlponed. This has been broughlibour principally due to the inability tonegotiite appropriate passage throughthe Soviet Union.Mr. Dickson reports the Soviet state-

ment, which we Pass on without com-ment -"We knew nothing about this event

until Yesterday and we told Mr.Dickson two years ago it would be

difficult. "

SCRUTINEERINGScrurineering at race meetings variesfrom circuit to circuit. Machine exam-iners are of course concerned withsafety and with the integrity of the veh-

icle; this is fairly consistent throughoutthe whole of the sport.

On the other hand, matters of eligibilityare many and varied, and at eachmeeting it is simply not possible forscrutineers to check every item whichmay render a ca ineligible.

CLASSIFIED RALLYDRIVERS

The determination of classification ofrally drivers, details of which appear atpage 114 of the 1982 Manual, have beenvried with the changing points scorefor the Australian Rally Championship.Puagraph l.l now reads -"Has gained either -(a) at least 12 points in either of the two

previous year's Australian RallyChampionship, or

(b) a total of 15 points in the twoprevious Australian Rally Cham-pionships.

RADIATOR OYERFLOWScrutineers in Victoria have asked thatwe draw to the attention of competitorsin race meetings the hazard whichresults from radiators overflowing andspilling water onto the track. whilst nolegislation to require catch tanks onradiator overflow pipes is proposed,competitors are asked to takeappropriate action to ensure that theircas do not create m undue hzud forother competitors.

FORD FALCONThe "4 bolt" cylinder block currently inuse in XD model Ford Falcons con-tinues to be acceptable until 3lstDecember 1982. lt should be noted thatsuch concession will not necessarily flowon to the XE model.

CLI.IBMANREGULATIONS

Clubman regulation 3.2(b) has been

mended, and with effect from lst April1982 will read -"The gearbox. Gearboxes derived fromtrmsaxles, e.g. Hewland, or from frontwheel drive cars, are prohibited Thegears ae free, provided that the numberof ratios remains the same as originallysupplied in that geilbox. Modificationsmiy be made to the outer ends of the

input and output shafts, and to the gear-

box casing for adaption purposes. "Regulation 3.3(c) has been mended,and now reads -

expected to check each time a car ls

GT CARS - GROUP DWith the new Group D getting off theground, a few pointers are in order.l. Log books for GrouP D cars should

be forwarded to Melboume forappropriate endorsement. If the carhas changed, new photograPhsshould be included, together with a

note of any other modificationsmade.

2. At:regularion 4.2(a), rhere is provi-sion for "an approved-engiite" to befitted to an approved model of car.Competitors contemplating u\ing anengine other thar the original equip-ment item must check and get CAMSapproval prior to commencing con-struction.

3. Regulation 3.3 now reads -"No modification may be made tothe series produced body shell unlessspecifically provided for in theseregulations. Rocker panels maY bealtered for ducting purposes."

4. Regulation 3.9{e) now reads -"An inner panel is required to pre-vent anything thrown uP bY thewheels entering the cockpit. This canbe achieved by any means at all, so

long as the habitacle is totally sealed

from the wheel well area. "5. Regulation 3.10(g) permits certain

components to be attached to bulk-heads. Clearly, if there was to be arotal prohibition on components inthe cockpit, the words "except forcomponenl\ installed up against orthrough bulk heads" would notappear in the regulation.

6. Regulations 5.1 to 5.5 mean - "thechassis and suspension are free, save

that the original wheel base must beretained, and a minimum of l75mmfrom the original door sill to the

TOURING CARCHAMPIONSHIP

The 1982 Manual does not contain thebreak-up of prizemoney for the TouringCa Championship. The correct figuresfor positions lst to loth outright ue -$1200, $950, $700, $600, $500, $350,$250, $200 and $100 respectively; for theunder 3 litre class, $500, $3m, $200respectively.

A round of the 1982 Formula TwoChampionship will be conducted atCalder, at the meeting scheduled for lstAugust.

On occaions.these enquiries are ol a highly technicalnature and it is inevitable that some-times confusion aises as to which ques-tion was asked, md what the ilswerutu there is thc question lhe enquirerposed, there is the question that he

thinks he asked, there is what theCAMS oflicer heud, and what hethink: he heard. And when the ansuer i\given, the same factors enter into thematter.Because of the possibility of confusion,it must be clearly understood that noresponsibility can be taken for advice ordeterminations given other than inwiting.Questions of a technical nature arerecorded by means of a file note, as trethe answers; it is strongly suggested thatshould a participant wish to take someaction on the basis of answers or advicegiven, that a copy of the notes of thatdiscussion should be reqtrested - atsome time in the future it may beimportant to have a record of what wasactually discussed.In order to re-inforce this, National

Competition Rule 159 has been amend-ed by the inclusion of the word "writ-ten" before the word "determination"where it occurs in line l.It is hoped that this change in theadministrative policy will further 6sistcompetitors in the preparation of theirCATS.

LATE DR. D. HILLRacing members in Western Australiahave suffered the loss of Dr. Doug Hill,who for many years was CAMS' Med-ical Assessor in that State. Dr. Hill diedrecently after a short illness. He was wellknown as a friend of the sport, ild wasalways pleased to co-operate with thoselicence holders who came in contactwith him. He will be missed by ourmembers in that State, and to his fmilyand associates, CAMS extends the sym-pathies of the sport.

TRIBUNESWe report that Mr. Eric Leighton hasretired as CAMS Tribune in WesternAustralia after mily years service to the.prort. tric serred in manl capacitiesover his Iong trsociation with CAMS,including Chairman of the W.A. StateCuncil, Stewad and more recently as

Tribune. He was alsc one of three per-sons who in difficult times in 1972,helped bring about a re-establishment ofthe State Council. It is unfortunate thathis experience md wise counsel will nolonger be available to us.

ROLL-OVERPROTECTION

Appendix C at Pilt 10, notes that roll-over protection is not required at eventsbelow National Open level on bodilyunmodified fixed roof closed crs (seeparagiaph 1.5, page 342 of the 1982Mmual). It should be noted that Tour-ing cars which have appertures in theturret, for example a sun roof, whetheroriginal equipmenr or olherwise, arereguded as being structurally modiliedfor-the purpose of this regulation, andtre not subject to that exemption.

ONE MINUTEPENALTY

A penalty of one minute added to therace time applies for jumping the startof a race, and may be applied for otherinfringements under the SupplementaryRegulations. Whilst it is required thatthis penalty be advised to the com-petitor's pit crew, there has until nowbeen no general notification that thepenalty has been incurred.With effect from lst May 1982, theremust be available for display to the fielda boad similar to the "Ctr stalled"sign, which carries the words " l Minutepenalty". This will be shom to alldrivers in the race in conjunction with

the number boud used with the blackflag. The purpose of this is to indicatenot only to the driver who ha beenaffected, but to others who may be rac-ing against him, the fact that a penaltywill be applied.

RALLY ACCIDENTSfrom time to time car5 compeling inCAMS authorised rallies are involved inaccidents which result in damage to property. This may range from injuredstGk to damaged fences, or even todmage to a car driven by someone notconnected with the event. In all cae., itis incumbent upon the crew of the car toreport the accident to the next controlofficial, who should then in turn reportto the Secretary of the event. If the car iswithdrawn from the event as a result ofthe accident, then a report should belodged with the Secretary by the crewmembers as soon tr possible.Unfortunately, some competitors arenot reporting accidents, which makes.ettlcment of claims by third panies verydi[licult and dram out - rhis in turnadversely affects the sport's stmding,particularly in rural areas.

STANDINGREGULATIONS

Race Meeting Standing Regularion 6.7hm been amended, and now reads"The starter motor as fitted to the carmd using only the inboard battery shallbe the sole means of starting the car atthe commencement of the race. Thepenalty for breach of this regulationshall be I minute added to the race timefor the competitor concerned."This now permits crs to be push startedin the pit lane area, without penalty.

HIMALAYANRALLY

Organisers of the third Himalayan Rallyhave forwarded brief details to CAMSof the 1982 event. It will be conductedfrom 6th-l2th November 1982. starringfrom New Delhi, the capital of India.The route initially traverses trid treason the flat lands of that country, beforeproceeding through the Corbetl Nat-ional Park which lhey tell ur ir tigercountry, and on to the Himalayanroads. It includes the Jalori Pass, a dirt

mountain road climbing to 10,600 ft., as

well as the Rohtmg Pass at il altitudeof I3,000 ft.The Himalayan Rally Association offersallractive terms for Ihe transportationof competitors, crew members, com-peting cars and service vehicles. A quick look at the GregorY'sconfirmed my fears - MooneYMooney was a five-day camelride away from HurstvillelAh well - we may get there fordessert and port. PassingConcord towards the RYdebridge we collected a

thunderstorm which staYed withus all the way to MooneYMooney. It rained so hard Ithink it must have used uP theworld's supply!

We finally arrived - ]oan a

quivering heap in the Ieft handseat - she never knew a ValiantGalant could go so fast. Horrors!

- not a single recognisable car inthe car park, A quick check ofthe date revealed it was not Yet1st April. Must be the rightplace - be brazen and walk in -ielief ! The gang had arrived andwere just settling into theirSth gin and tonic or whatever,

The food was as good as themenu read and everYbodY'sappetite was well satisfied andthat included a "freebY" bananasplit which was shared equallYaround the table.

During the meal a 3-Piecegroup entertained us (and theCIub Members)with music thatbrought an evil glint into

]im Peters' eyes - it obviouslYreminded him of a missPentyouth! AII the Workers Clubmembers were dancing to a

well-rehearsed repertoire and attimes they reminded me of a

well-practised drill-squad' The triopromised some Rock n' Roll forihe city slickers who had invadedtheir Club and true to word,burst forth with tunes from the1958 era. We all took advantageand jived, twisted, and generallYcavorted around the room untilexhausted.

The journey home for ]oanand me was quite Painless -thankfully it had stoPPed raining

- and the distance did not seemquite so far. Our thanks to Sue

This event was organized bythe Ford Car Club of NSW, andattracted over a hundred entriesfrom 10 car clubs [ChryslerO.C.C,, Sydney Tech. C.C,,NSWRRC, NSW Hill ClimbClub, Holden Sporting C.C.,Volvo SCC, Fishers Ghost CC,TSCC, ARDC and FordJ. Therewere 3 entries from our club:Martin and Trevor Oldroyd intheir sports sedan Torana, andmyself in DBS V8,

More than half the field wassports sedans, racing cars andsports racing cars, so there weresome pretty quick times, withFTD going to a single seatopen-wheeler hill climb specialat 48.6 secs (about 10 secsquicker than I can do it in myV8, with luckJ. The event waswell run, so everyone completed4 runs comfortably within thetime allowed.

Martin Oldroyd returned acreditable time of 54.5 secs withthe Torana, which was apersonal best I think; thisdespite some gear linkageproblems, Trevor drove the samecar steadily and a few secondsslower; and this time Ray was anon-combatant, but armed withcamera and tripod. We choseother cars to run against fromwithin our respective classes,then had a warm up lap from a

standing start; then 2 laps froma standing start, the flying lapbeing timed.

I ran against a sports sedanCapri which demolished me inall respects: 30 yds clear at thefirst corner from a standingstart, then I couldn't stay withhim while he was only weavingaround warming his t1'res up!My last couple of runs wereagainst an SLR 5000 whicheasily outdragged me (!Jbut heldme up through the curves.The driver of this graciously agreedto let me have the first corneron our final run, but then I blewthe advantage by spinning in

front of him.My final ignominy came

when I was beaten by a Holdenute . . . so things can only getbetter. Despite the results wehad a great day though.Seeing what can be achieved byspecial vehicles on adjustablesuspensions and racing tlresprovides an interestingcomparison for those of usrunning standard road cars.And the mere fact of drivingaround a racing circuit is mostexhilarating.

Organized by the UniversityCar Club, and attended by46 competitors from UCC, AlfaRomeo Owner's CC, NSWCC,Porsche CC NSW. Oh, andI almost forgot, the TSCC; butthen there was only one of usthere,.,.

Admittedly it was rainingheavily most of the day, and Iwent out with some trepidationthinking that it might even bepostponed. But no, and inretrospect I'm very glad it wasn't.For this was a great opportunityfor all of us to explore our wetweather litnits,

Most of us exceeded them atsome stage. In my own case itwas at the end of the first flyinglap, when I braked tooinsensitively at the end of themain straight and waltzed offinto the outfield. No damage,useful experience, and hopefullyone driver the wiser for it,

The rain is a great leveller.Everyone's lap times were up toL0 secs [159oJ more than their"dry" times. But I suspect thatthose cars with inherently betterhandling characteristics enj oyedsome advantage here; in myown case I was delighted withthe handling of the heavy V8which returned 9 secs slowerthan my previous best, and one"unofficial" Iap 8 secs slowerafter the rain h:d eased.

To my mind one of the mostimpressive performances camefrom a Mazda 323 [Eurosport -whatever that means) only % secslower than my own time (67.55)which was 2 secs behind FTDfPorsche 65.51J. This time Ididn't feel so badly with5 Porsches slower than me [butalso, admittedly, 5 faster!1.Obviously our club could havedone with a Ferrari or twowaving the banner.

I was interested to talk to thedriver of a 3.0litre Carrera whoclaimed he normally reached120 mph along the main straightin the dry. I think I only everget to 100-105, (although I mustadmit to being a bit scared tolook at the speedo as that leftloop looms up at the end of thestraight!). Our lap times in thewet were similar, with hisaverage better than mine, andmy unofficial best a shadeahead of his, I'm not sure whatthis suggests: perhaps thatPorsches have a bigger advantagein braking than I had thought.An1'way, this may be interestingto those of you who have pittedyourselves against the Porschecontingent, only to be knocked offby a couple of seconds or so.

In brief, the wet lap dash wasanother great day. Twice thethrill and haif the tyre wear.On Oran Park at least - Amaroowith its cambers and wallsmight be another story . . .
