A system of legal racial segregation enforced by the National Party government in South Africa between 1948 and 1994, under which the rights of the majority black inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and minority rule by whites was maintained.

Apartheid

Separation of people based on racial, ethnic, or other differences

Segregation

A group formed in protest of the policy of Apartheid in South Africa. It was eventually outlawed due to their violent tactics, and Nelson Mandela, one of its leaders, was imprisoned for over thirty years.

African National Congress

October 1899-1902. Fight between British and Boer people of South Africa after gold was discovered there. British were extremely brutal and defeated the resistance. White rule continued through the late 20th century.

Boers War

South Africans descended from Dutch and French settlers of the seventeenth century. Their Great Trek founded new settler colonies in the nineteenth century. Though a minority among South Africans, they held political power after 1910.

Afrikaner

1919 Was organized from an idea that people of African descent around the world should work together for their freedom, Africa deserved independence from European rule/ colonialism

Pan African Congress

March 21, 1960 in Sharpeville, by Johannesburg. PAC led campaign of blacks to surrender themselves for arrest and led to small clashes and then the police firing, killing and wounding many.

Sharpeville

Impoverished black neighborhood outside Johannesburg, South Africa, and the site of a violent uprising in 1976 in which hundreds were killed; that rebellion began a series of violent protests and strikes that helped end apartheid.

Largest City in southern Africa. Source of diamonds and gold.

Johannesburg

Born 1918. 11th President of South Africa. Spent 27 years in prison after conviction of charges while he helped spearhead the struggle against apartheid. Received Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
