A Zine is: A self-published personal magazine

prepared for a specific audience, purpose and main idea.

The Zine you will create focuses specifically on you as the individual. It will focus on things you like/dislike, activities you do in your spare time, and things you want to do in your future.

It will be loosely based on a theme (examples to be discussed in class).

The Zine will include a number of different forms of writing, including:

Short Story – based on a photo/memory

Essay Writing – best and worst News Article Memoir (in the form of a rant) Letter to the Editor Advertisement Reflections

The Zine will also include drafting and creative components, including:

Pictures you draw or sketch Collages made using

The objective of the Zine project: To discover some of your strengths and to

improve on your weaknesses as a writer. To attempt to achieve some of the goals

you set in your goals essay. To explore different forms of writing in

order to prepare for the final exam. To learn and apply research skills. To adapt research skills to a writing piece. To quote and cite information properly. To use creativity in a variety of ways.

Materials you will need to complete your Zine:

Pencil Crayons/coloured markers Pens/pencils/use of a computer Magazines (appropriate for school,

that reflect your likes and interests) Scissors and glue Photographs Construction paper Scrapbook items; stickers, ticket stubs,

wrappers, paper, beads, ribbon, etc.

Rubrics for the Zine

The Zine will be marked based on a number of components. Some will be teacher created, others student created. There will also be student and peer evaluation as well for different components.

It is important that students are aware of due dates, as drafting of materials will be due on a regular basis, while the final product will be turned in as one large assignment.
