It was 1982 when I joined Stanford University as a graduate student. The campus was beautiful and the sky was blue. I was dreaming about what I should do in the future. One day, I read a paper, and my life was forever changed. One day, I was lucky enough to get the atomic image of Si 7x7. I was so happy. This was the hallmark of the exclusive STM club in those days. / I had more luck that the instrument I built appeared on the cover page of Physics Today.
