A WORD FROM THE NBBFCO-FOUNDERS

On this eighth anniversity of the National Black Book Festival, there is much about which we are thankful. First, we thank God for giving us the vision to dream of an event of this magnitude, and to act upon that dream. When God gives us vision, He also gives us the provisions to realize our dreams.

Second, we want to thank Fallbrook Church for allowing us to host NBBF at this spacious facility for our third consecutive year. Pastor Michael Pender and his wife, Sister Jan, are shin-ing examples of leaders within the body of Christ and the Hous-ton community. The entire staff at Fallbrook has been incredibly gracious and we cannot thank them enough for all of the assis-tance they provided.

Third, we want to thank the many volunteers who have dedicat-ed themselves to assuring NBBF is successful, year after year. There are too many to name individually, but please know that your dedication is appreciated.

Next, we would like to thank the dozens of authors, publishers and other vendors who make NBBF one of the largest events of its kind in the country. The importance of expanding the quantity and quality of African-American literature cannot be overstated.

Finally, we would like to thank the book clubs and readers for continuing to support the book industry. We hope you purchase loads of books over the weekend at NBBF, resulting in hours of reading enjoyment in the coming months.

The 2016 National Black Book Festival will be held in late Oc-tober at Fallbrook Church. The exact dates should be available by the time the 2015 NBBF commences. Thank you for your continued support.

By Dale Finley Slongwhite

Compelling and heart-wrenching stories of the African Americans who harvested food for America along the shores of Lake Apopka in Florida.

Exposed to chemicals such as DDT, Toxaphene, and Chlordane, they died in droves or became seriously ill.

The first-person story format of a complicated subject delivers an

informative easy read for the average reader, while the original narratives make this a go-to book for researchers in environmental justice, social justice, environmental racism, chemical exposure, the history of farm work in America.
