"ה טובו אהליך יעקב משכנותיך ישראל"מ High Holiday Reflections by: Jennifer Miller

I’ve been preoccupied, reflecting on what’s been so uniquely inspirational about High Holidays 5781 in our community. As many of you know, I’ve been here for a while, and seen about 47 other Rosh Hashana seasons at 641 West Englewood Avenue. And to tell you the truth, this hasn’t been a great year. The world is a mess. Here in shul, we haven’t sold a record number of seats, our micro minyanim with masked mispallelim probably won’t win the B’rov am hadras Melech award, and at press time, one of our primary baalei tefilla was in quarantine. Yet I find myself humming the melodies of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, with a renewed deep kinship, admiration and appreciation for my fellow shul members. I’m kind of on a high- higher than in years past. And I know I’m not alone. Did anyone else see Rabbi Zahtz’s beaming (albeit exhausted) smile while walking home from making the minyan rounds across town?

When I stumbled upon a lecture that Rabbi Dr Norman Lamm z”l delivered in July 1954, the logic and simplicity of this dialectic crystalized for me, his words from over 60 years ago chillingly apt.

In Rabbi Lamm’s analysis of why we grant Ma Tovu, a blessing that had been intended as a curse, such a preeminent place in our tefilla, he writes:

“That unique aspect of our collective character, that singularly Jewish trait which manifests itself in the choice of “ma tovu” …. is the very ability to wring a blessing out of a curse. We say “ma tovu” not despite the fact that it was intended to harm us, but because of that very fact. It is Jewish to find the benediction in the malediction, the good in the evil, the opportunity in the catastrophe. It is Jewish to make the best of the worst, to squeeze holiness out of profanity. From the evil and diabolical intentions of Balaam, “May you not have any synagogues and schools,” we molded a blessing of “ma tovu,” which we recite just as we enter those very halls of worship and study.”

The pain that individuals among us and our community as a whole have suffered cannot and should not be underestimated. And although yeshuas Hashem may come keheref ayin, it seems we could be in this predicament for a bit longer. But our tzibbur has found benediction in malediction and preparing for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur has exposed a kindness and generosity among us that I’ve personally felt privileged to witness.

In the BC era, Before COVID, we were blessed to have a large shul with many minyanim and opportunities for social and like-minded groups to cluster. With over a thousand people passing through the many doors of Bnai Yeshurun each Shabbat, it was remarkably easy to miss someone who may have been davening in the same room (or row) as you for 25 years. You have your carpool and your friends; just keep your head down and keep walking. As part of the team that helped organize the logistics for the 16 (!) minyanim CBY hosted this year, I saw our true essence emerge. People who might never otherwise have met developed deep and meaningful relationships. In speaking to the minyan hosts, I heard things like, “We need to take care of that guy; please make sure he’s comfortable. Do you know

him? Did you know that he’s a survivor?!” Or, “That woman is expecting; I need to get her a more comfortable chair.”

I’ve seen hosts to great lengths behind the scenes to create the most welcoming backdrops for their minyanim. Just a few examples….installing pavers for a more pleasant walkway; planting trees to camouflage the tent; removing hedges to enable a high risk neighbor to participate from his own property; keeping a tent up through Sukkot (sacrificing a lawn and privacy for another 2 weeks); building a customized mechitza to optimize the davening for all mispallelim; buying and schlepping tables an hour before Shabbat to satisfy popular demand; hiring a world renowned chazan to ensure a completely enriching experience.

As it turns out, this attitude and generosity are not only appreciated, they’re contagious. Without exception, every (every!) communication from members relating to the High Holiday set up has been respectful and grateful. Those that have requests ask humbly and always with the caveat of, “I know this is a crazy year and you have so many moving parts to worry about, but if it’s at all possible to…… I would so appreciate it if…” Many members who were not yet ready to attend a larger minyan voluntarily donated the cost of the seats they would have normally purchased to support the shul. I think a record number of members emailed the office simply to say thank you to Elysia and her team for the Herculean endeavor and incredible choreography.

And on the most basic level, it feels incredible merely because we are here. It took commitment to just show up. And the fact that over 1,200 of us were able to and actually sat down on the eve of Rosh Hashana to hear the familiar sounds of the timeless nusach, in the middle of a global pandemic, with every legitimate opportunity to opt out, illustrates our ability to create opportunity amid catastrophe, and elevates those sounds of tefilla.

Perhaps we’ve had some kind of transformation. For me, I don’t think I’ll ever say Ma Tovu again without thinking of your tents, Ohelacha Yaakov, the tents that serve as beacons of our devotion to our Jewishness and fellow Jews, by simply entering them. These tents have sparked a revolution in our community, not despite the challenges, but because of them.

May we all merit a gmar chatima tova, one filled with health, bracha, joy and continued unity.

General Yom Kippur Davening Instructions • In each of the five tefillos (Ma’ariv, Shacharis, Musaf, Mincha and Neilah), Selichos are recited after the Silent

Amidah. At Ma’ariv, it is a standalone Selichos and in the daytime, they are part of Chazaras HaShatz (Chazan’s repetition). When one is without a minyan, the Selichos may be recited, omitting the paragraphs containing the Thirteen Attributes ( ל רחום וחנון- ה' ה' א ).

• There is a tradition to recite Vidui ten times over the course of Yom Kippur: five during each silent Amidah and five during the Selichos that follow each Amidah. As such, one davening without a minyan should prioritize Vidui (at least Ashamnu) in choosing which parts of Selichos to recite.

• There are many beautiful piyutim that are recited in Chazaras HaShatz. These piyutim, together with their accompanying tunes may be recited when davening without a minyan. Singing them or reciting them can greatly enhance one’s Yom Kippur davening.

Teen Department – A Message from Rabbi Jonathan Schachter The Right “Perspective” for Yom Kippur

The Gemara (Berachos 20b) records the following contradiction which the angels raise to HaShem. On the one hand, the Torah states that HaShem is a perfect judge, who does not show any favoritism or accept any bribes (Devarim 10:17 - HaKeil, Hagadol, Hagibor, ve’Hanorah, asher lo yisa fanim v’lo yikach shochad.) Yet, when the Torah sets forth the text of Birkas Kohanim, the last line of the beracha is “Yisa HaShem panav eleicha v’yasem lecha shalom,” which means that “HaShem will show favor towards you and place upon you peace.” Thus, we have a contradiction!!

The Gemara then offers HaShem’s resolution to this contradiction. “Of course, in general, I don’t show favoritism, but towards the Jewish people, how can I not?? After all, I commanded them to bentch only after they are satiated from their meal, but they bentch even after eating a mere k’zayis!”

HaShem’s resolution to this contradiction is difficult to comprehend. From HaShem’s response, it still seems that HaShem favors us, so how did He resolve the contraction? Additionally, what does bentching on a k’zayis have to do with any of this?? Rabbi Yitzchak Twersky, a Rebbi of mine, offered the following explanation of this cryptic Gemara. For the rest of the world, HaShem evaluates each person’s behavior through the lenses of a judge. For the Jewish people, however, HaShem chooses to use a different lens through which to evaluate us, namely the lens of a parent. If you are a parent who has ever attended your child’s first grade siddur play (or first Teaneck soccer game), then you understand exactly what this means. None of the performers on the stage (or playing field) is doing anything spectacular, but somehow, the way my child sings and claps (or chases after the ball and kicks it directly to the other team) just seems much cuter and even more skilled than everyone else. What is the rationale behind this “judgment”? For everyone else, I am evaluating through the prism of a bystander, but for my own child, I am looking through the lenses of a parent.

Perhaps this is what HaShem was trying to convey to the angels. “When it comes to judging My nation, I judge them as objectively as a parent judges a child. After all, when I tell them to thank Me after a full meal, they go above and beyond and thank Me even for a partial meal. And once they are relating to Me as a child does to its father, then how can I not evaluate them as a parent would evaluate His own child?”

I had the great privilege of being the shaliach tzibbur for mussaf this past Rosh Hashanna in the CBY minyan in our backyard. As I was finishing the beracha in chazaras hashatz of zichronos, whose theme is how HaShem judges the world, my five year old son came running out of the house right towards me. He was wearing his mask, but it couldn’t hide his huge smile and enthusiasm, as he came rushing over to give me a hug. My initial reaction was – this is probably not the most appropriate time for my son to be grabbing on to my legs for a hug, considering I was trying to represent the tzibbur on Yom Hadin in the beracha that focuses on judgment! But then I thought of this idea – how happy does a father feel when his son runs to embrace him with love and excitement!! And how can a father possibly look at that child the same way he looks at someone else’s child!! I then tried to channel that emotion into whatever was left of the tefilla, and approach HaShem with a little more of the youthful love that a child has for a parent.

Perhaps this is what Rabbi Akiva meant to teach us in the last mishna of maseches Yoma, as he reflects on the day of Yom Kippur. Despite the fact that we are fasting and are scared, and that our lives are in the balance, and that even the angels are trembling as the world passes before HaShem to be judged, Rabbi Akiva reminds us of how lucky we are as Jews on this day.

אשריכם ישראל, לפני מי אתם מיטהרין ומי מטהר אתכם? אביכם שבשמיים

“How fortunate are you, Jewish people!! Before whom do you come to be purified and who purifies you? It is your Father in Heaven.” It is not an impartial judge. It is Avinu who is Malkeinu. And we aren’t just anybody. Ki anu vanecha v’ata Avinu!

Virtual Youth Wing! Ha’azinu in “Hashtag” Form

• Haazinu is the second to last parsha of the Torah. Essentially, it’s a giant poem, or song, that is written in the Torah in an artistic fashion. #Artsy #HeIsAPoet #AndDidn’tEvenKnowIt

• Moshe called out to the sky and the earth to serve as witnesses to testify and ensure adherence to HaShem’s Torah. Moshe reminds us that whatever HaShem does is just. #HelloSky #HelloWorld #ExpertWitness

• Moshe instructs us to learn the history of the world. #StudyHistory #YouJustGotSchooled • We are then told about what will happen in the future. HaShem will take us into Eretz Yisroel, we will become

successful and wealthy, and then we will forget about HaShem. As a result, we will serve our modern day idols. HaShem will then send us many wakeup calls to help bring us back to Him, to help remind us about who is the #Boss. These wakeup calls may be enemy attackers, famine, beasts, etc. #Don’tPressSnooze #PostcardsFromGod #WakeupSleepyhead sleepyhead

• Ultimately, we will do teshuva, and HaShem will remove those who cause us pain, and will make sure that proper payback is given. #Victory #JusticeIsServed

• Harninu! The poem ends with the nations of the world singing about the #awesomeness of the #JewishPeople. • After teaching Haazinu to the Jewish people, Moshe inspires them by telling them that the Torah is #INCREDIBLE

and that it is our #LIFE. Moshe is then told to ascend Har Navo, in order to look into Eretz Yisroel. #TheClimb

Fun Facts #NoWay • Did you know that the Kohen Gadol changes his clothing
