Each storage element has its own management tool….complex environment.

– Administrators must be trained on each tool.

– Different tool sets that basically do the "same thing“.

– Perhaps not clear on the value of the tool….how best to gain this value.

No end-to-end storage management.

No central reporting repository for management.

Cannot automate routine storage administrative tasks.

Customers Are Often Unable to Articulate What They Really May Need or Want To Do…

Your strategy is to…– Figure out what customers are really asking for.

– Show them how Tivoli Storage Productivity Center will help .

– Help them use Tivoli Storage Productivity Center once they have it.

They may ask for help in vague terms…– I need a storage assessment.

– I need to implement “tiered storage”.

– I need to do “Information Lifecycle Management”.

What a customer really means – Reduced IT cost….TCO

The Need for Common, Open Interfaces- SNIA and SMI-S

Problem: Each hardware manufacturer did not want to invent new software to manage each new storage device.

Approach: A collaborative effort, called the “Storage Management Initiative (SMI)” task force.

Result: Open Standard “SMI-Specification” interface.

Different Approaches to Virtualization

Host-based (Veritas VR, IBM/SofTek)►Software runs on host servers or firmware in Host bus adapters

►Creates virtual volumes from storage attached to the host servers

Switch-based (EMC Invista, Incipient NSP, Veritas SFN) - Split-path architecture for intelligent devices

►Software runs in switches within the SAN

►Creates virtual volumes from storage attached to the SAN

Appliance/Network-based (IBM SVC, FalconStor IPStor, DataCore)

►Software runs in “engines” or “nodes”

►Creates virtual volumes from storage on SAN

Disk Controller-based (HDS USP V/VM, Sun, HP)►Software runs in a disk controller array

►Creates virtual volumes from direct attached or SAN attached storage

Copy Services: Global Mirror Journal File What this is

– During Global Mirror IO operations, if a second write is received to the same 512-byte sector for which an earlier write to that sector is not yet completed, a journal entry is created to capture the data for the older write

– Once the journal is established, the new write can continue without waiting for the earlier write's completion to the VDisk on the secondary site.

– SVC will correctly apply the necessary set of writes to make the secondary site synchronized, thus maintaining valid consistent data

– The journal can be used to resubmit writes if at any point communications are disrupted

– Multiple generations of data for a single sector can be “in flight” concurrently

Why it matters– Enhances the initial GM implementation by improving the

time for write complete notification to the host for a “same sector” write

– During the Global Mirror operations consistency is maintained at all times at the secondary site, so that in the event of an emergency, data can be restored to a known point.

Copy Services: SEVs as MM/GM Targets

What this is

– Space-Efficient Virtual Disks may be used as Metro/Global Mirror targets

– When performing the initial synchronization from an SEV source to an SVC target, SVC will not copy unallocated space to the target, maintaining its status as a Space-Efficient Virtual Disk

Why this matters

– Improves efficiency of disaster recovery environments by enabling use of SEV functionality

Page 87: © 2008 IBM Corporation IBM Systems and Technology Group © 2009 IBM Corporation IBM System Storage – Software Part 2

RAS: Network Time Protocol (NTP) Support

What this is– NTP is the common protocol for system clock synchronization

– Enables SVC to synchronize its clock from a common time source such as NIST, which may also be used by other systems

Why this matters– Users can set and forget the system clock on their SVC clusters and be assured

that the SVC cluster will always report the correct time in emails, error logs and diagnostics dumps

– When system events occur, users can more accurately determine event relationships using the common time stamps between SVC and other systems

Side by Side Comparison – IBM vs. HDS

IBM SAN Volume Controller HDS USP V/VM models

SVC can pool across disks, spans up to 4 node pairs, support more disk array types and server models

USP can’t stripe data across controllers, limited to single disk array virtualization

You can create MDISK Group from multiple arraysYou can create multiple pools in the same array

Each system is a separate disk pool

Is easy to manage Is not easy to manage

Online/dynamic volume expansion Offline volume expansion

Does not support mainframe Supports mainframe

Is an appliance with it own internal disks Need internal disks (not on USP VM)

Max. 8PB for a single SVC cluster for a maximum of 64GB of mirrored cache using 4KB pages (blocks)

Support up to 247 PB but for a maximum of 512GB mirrored cache using 16KB slots (blocks)

Meaningful LUN names, moving virtual volumes is easy Just assigns system-generated numbers (LUxx) names, moving virtual volumes is a manual and complex procedure

IBM has sold more then 13,300 SVC nodes, in over 3,800 system installations

HDS claim they have sold around 6000 USP systems WW(1), but they have also said that only 10% are using the virtualization feature(2)

SDD is free of charge HDLM is charged by server on which it is installed

Cache partitioning by Managed Disk Group Cache, CHIP ports and parity group assigned to each partition

4 ports host adapter 8/16/32 ports channel interface processor (CHIP)

SVC can concurrent upgrade software, microcode and hardware Concurrent upgrade software and microcode, not all hardware. Maintenance and replacement effect complete SAN installation

Switch-Based Virtualization summary Intelligent switch hardware is coming from all major SAN vendors: Cisco SSM (director

class) and Brocade AP7600B (switch), FA4-18 (blade) Many different software functions can run on these Intelligent hardware platforms

– Inter-networking SAN routers, FC-IP and iSCSI protocol conversion, flow-through virtualization and more

Slow adoption and implementation of intelligent switches– Small foot print for switch virtualization (Invista, iNSP, Fujitsu, Troika, StoreAge)

– Appliance is still the leading virtualization technology (Over 13,300 SVC nodes deployed)

Intelligent switch virtualization in still immature technology– Still to be proven that all promises behind intelligent switch virtualization can be

delivered Switch-based Market is not growing as predicted, slow adoption Investment in SSM blades, SSE software, virtualization software makes switch-based

solution expensive, especially for entry customers and pilots Each hardware supplier has a different API for software applications

– Standards group working to define a common API: Fabric Application Interface Standard (FAIS)

– But that will take a long time to resolve
