Active Chapter Thrilled with New HomeEagerly Anticipates Dedication Celebration

After a much-deserved and relaxing winter break, the men of Delta Omicronreturned to work on another successful semester.

Thus far, we have had a very busy and exciting spring! As you know, the chapterhouse has been remodeled, and the active chapter moved back in during the lastweek of January. It has been great to have the entire chapter back under one roof;we are readjusting to the on-campus lifestyle, and things have been movingquickly ever since!

Living away from Greek Row for more than a year was a struggle but allowed ourbrotherhood to develop for the better. As an active chapter, we had to overcome thechallenges of not being able to congregate on a daily basis, but our alumni werethere to lend a helping hand or word of advice every step of the way. As a brother-hood, we are excited and grateful for the newly remodeled house; it looks great andwould not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our manyloyal and generous alumni.

We are proud of our chapter house and look forward to a healthy Sigma Nu future. Our enthusiastic recruitment chairmen are in the midst of planning a full summer ofevents, and we are confident that we will recruit another strong pledge class nextyear to set a standard for years to come. See page 5 for details.

Alumni are always welcome to stop by the new house any time, but the active chap-ter is especially looking forward to seeing many of you at the house dedication April28-29. It is sure to be a fun weekend, and we anticipate making new memories andhearing your undergraduate Delta Omicron memories as well.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns or if you wouldsimply like to know what’s new at Delta Omicron.

Alumni Support Essential to Chapter Longevity

As many of you may now know, the chapter house renovation iscomplete! It has been a long endeavor to get to this point. Without

the dedication of many alumni and the undergraduates, this would notbe a reality. There is not enough space to write about the sheer effortthat was successfully undertaken to make this project happen, but theend result is that we have a new chapter home we can all be proud of.

Through the efforts of our chapter advisor, Pete Tensmeyer ’00, ∆∆ΟΟ1505, we have developed a facility plan outlining what is to be expect-ed of our chapter membership in regard to the new house. The docu-ment is a work in process but outlines expectations in regard to allchapter functions. This plan was developed not to micromanage thechapter house, but to provide an outline for responsible use. The phys-ical structure and systems are being overseen by Jim Hermann ’74,∆∆ΟΟ 1044. Our obvious goal is to ensure the longevity of the house andprotect the investment our alumni have made.

Although the chapter house is complete, we are a long way from beingfinancially secure in this project. We still need as much alumni supportas possible to cover the costs of construction and then begin payingdown the debt load taken on for the renovation. All gift sizes are wel-come, and alumni support is critical to ensure the longevity of thechapter in the future.

rothers in Delta Omicron,It is with sadness that I inform you that

two of our loyal brothers, Bruce Summers ’57,∆∆ΟΟ 720 and Harry Stunz ’58, ∆∆ΟΟ 729, haverecently entered Chapter Eternal. Their pass-ing reminds me that I am of the age where thishappens and makes me question, “Why?”

Older brothers know that this is an experiencewe all must go through. Younger brothers maynot have experienced this realization of mor-tality. As it is often said, life truly is fleeting.

It is at times such as this that we questionwhether we have made a difference and whatare those things that extend beyond our lives? Our families, certainly, friends, of course, maybe our jobs or hobbies will be remembered,as well. Two institutions that have stood the test

WHAT WILL YOU LEAVE BEHIND?of time, and will continue to, are the Universityof Idaho and our Delta Omicron Chapter ofSigma Nu.

Many brothers have answered the call in pastdecades to “save” the chapter from financialruin or lack of manpower. Without their inter-cession, Delta Omicron would not be heretoday. However, we are here today; we are onElm Street with a beautiful, new chapter houseand an active chapter strong in the ideals ofSigma Nu, dedicated to doing their part to keepthe chapter strong for the 21st century. Theundergraduates are certainly doing their part.

In past newsletters, you have read of ourhigher-than-expected construction budget. We still must raise $300,000 to make up thedifference between the mortgage now carried

by the active chapter and previous alumnicontributions. If possible, I ask those alumniwho are able to consider making a major giftof $25,000 or $15,000 paid over four years ifyou like. If you are unable to step up to thislevel, please remember that every gift trulymakes a difference, and all gifts are welcome.Won’t you consider your resources and digdeep for your brotherhood?

Please do not hesitate to contact me withquestions or concerns, and remember thatthere are still naming opportunities available.

Fraternally yours,Carl Berry ’58, DO 738C A M PA I G N C H A I R M A N
