From the Chancelleryworld-class research ratingI frequently feel very proud of this university and the results ofthe first Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessmentreleased in late January confirmed that there is indeed much tobe proud about Our performance was very pleasing as were thecomparisons with the rest of the sector

For a university barely two decades old to have around 70 percent of its assessed research rated world-class is exceptionalespecially when you consider that the assessment was based ondata collected between 2003 and 2008 when much of ourresearch culture was still very young

This is a tribute to all of our researchers and their assistants aswell as to everyone within the university who has shared thevision of UniSA becoming a significant research institution

I hope that you share my excitement not just about what we haveachieved but also at how this places us to achieve even more inthe future

Chemical sciences deserves a special mention as we were ranked equal first in the country in thisbroad field but what really stands out for me is the diversity of our achievement

The list ndash and it is a long one ndash also includes fields such as engineering mathematical sciencesenvironmental sciences business and management accounting and auditing social work tourismeducation systems built environment and design creative arts and writing historical studies a widerange of medical and health science disciplines and language communication and culture Even lawis there and wersquove only had a law school since 2007

All four of our divisions are represented and the mix of traditional and emerging disciplines is excitingand a clear pointer to our growth as an institution

In recent years we have made it a priority to develop attract nurture and support great researchersand those with the potential to be great Consider the following

Two thirds of our academics hold doctorates (placing us in the top 10 nationally last year) and wenow have more than 1000 PhD students heading in the same directionWe more than doubled our research income to $58M between 2004 and 2009In the past four years we have appointed 13 UniSA ResearchSA Chairs and 26 externally andcompetitively funded research fellows and we now rank in the top five in Australia for fundingawarded to support Cooperative Research Centres

As Paul Keating once said that is a beautiful set of numbers and they add up to a very bright futureA future where all our students increasingly will benefit from a learning experience infused andaugmented by research of world standing

Trev UniSArsquos Two-seater Renewable EnergyVehicle has set off from Morocco on the final legof the Zero Emissions Race around the world setto finish at the United Nations headquarters inGeneva at the end of February

Initially designed and built by UniSA students andmodified and driven by a team of volunteers thethree-wheeled electric green machine has alreadycovered 27000 kilometres as Australiarsquos onlyrepresentative in the first zero emission globalrace for vehicles powered by renewable energy

lsquoTeam Trevrsquo developer Dr Peter Pudney fromUniSArsquos School of Mathematics and Statistics said Trevrsquos travelling well despite a few hiccups

ldquoWhen we reach the finish in Geneva Trev will have travelled almost 30000 kilometres or theequivalent of more than two years driving around Adelaide in 80 days at a renewable energy cost of$400rdquo Dr Pudney said

ldquoWersquove had a few reliability problems along the way and itrsquos been a really hard journey just in terms oflate finishes long days and then having to find somewhere to rechargerdquo he said

Zero Race which has taken three international teams across Europe China and North America sincestarting in August last year is designed for the electric cars to travel 250 kilometres between chargingpoints but Dr Pudney said in some cases Trevrsquos been struggling to last the distance

ldquoSome of the charging points are more than the 250 kilometres apart so we often have to find a smalltop up charge somewhere which can sometimes be difficultrdquo he said

ldquoWe have photos from Kazakhstan of our electrician sitting on someone elses shoulders to wire upcharging points for the teams

ldquoBut if you turn up in this little green car with an Australian flag on it people are pretty happy to help

ldquoBy the time the crew got to Mexico they had worked out that air-conditioning units were the go If youcould find someone willing to forgo air-conditioning for a few hours for Trev then it would be alrightrdquoDr Pudney said

The race was originally scheduled to finish back at the start line in Geneva at the beginning ofFebruary but had to be delayed because all three cars were stranded on a Mexican wharf

Trev finished the second leg of the race lastDecember in Cancun and appeared as part of theUnited Nations Climate Change Conference

Dr Pudney travelled to Cancun for the event

From disposable waste to lsquofine tastersquoby Alex Doudy

Award-winning ideas can strike in the unlikeliest places - just askUniSA student Kieran Ball who came up with the concept ofbuilding a sun lounge chair out of recycled wooden barrels whenwondering through a tequila distillery in Mexico

The graduating Industrial Design student was working as anintern with top Mexican design firm EZEQUIELFARCA in 2009when he thought of the sustainable design concept which wenton to win Gold in the 2010 Design Institute of Australia (SA)Awards and first place in the lsquoObjectrsquo category of the StylecraftPeoplersquos Choice Award

But it was a long process from the tequila barrel brainwave toindustry recognition for the up-and-coming designer whorecently turned down an offer to exhibit the piece at the ModernDesign and Art Museum in New York because of bad timing

ldquoThe offer came right at the time when I was leaving Mexico andat that stage it was just modelled on the computer and it was literally the week before I left I wouldhave needed to stay there and spend a lot more time with manufacturers to get it to that pointrdquo Kieransaid

ldquoBut once I got back to Australia I put more time into it and instead of using tequila barrels I usedwine barrels

ldquoIt took a further five months to piece together theintricate patchwork of recycled wine barrel oakused to make The Tannin Lounger

ldquoI had to slice the staves the wooden slats thatare bent together to form the barrel which areabout 10cm wide into three pieces to form thepieces for the chair

ldquoIn slicing through that wood you expose wherethe wine has soaked into the grain and stained itso you get a whole heap of different textures

ldquoItrsquos such a unique material because of that character that story you canrsquot get that history whenmaking a brand sparkling new productrdquo he said

Aside from its aesthetically pleasing and distinctive shape Kieran said using recycled materials tomake a sustainable product was a key motivating factor throughout the project

ldquoWine barrels are either made from American or French oak which is generally imported to Australiabefore being made into barrels and sent out to the wineries where they get used for five to seven

Kieran said the practical skills learned during his degree have been invaluable in launching his designcareer ldquoThe Industrial Design degree is very hands on you need to know what is possible to do ndash itrsquos all welland good designing something and then going hang on itrsquos not possible to make it so we have avery hands on education in the workshop here on campus which is fantasticrdquo Kieran said

Beginning university is an exciting and dauntingexperience but beginning university in a differentcountry can be a whole other challenge To help the900 new international students get acquainted withtheir respective UniSA campuses activities rangingfrom part-time job workshops to enrolment adviceand learn to swim sessions were held earlier thismonth as part of the annual Welcome Week

On-hand to help new students was third yearMarketing student Ebe Erdenebayar (pictured right)from Mongolia

He volunteered as a lsquoBusiness Matersquo duringWelcome Week to help new international students inthe same way that volunteers helped him when hefirst arrived in Adelaide

ldquoIrsquom a guide so I talk to new students and help to make them feel comfortable They can ask meabout anything they want like the library facilities and which classes and subjects to takerdquo Ebe said

ldquoI wanted to be like the volunteers that I spoke to when I started university because they were reallyhelpfulrdquo he said

Ebe transferred to Adelaide after studying at UniSArsquos campus in Malaysia

ldquoAfter studying in Malaysia and spending time in the United States and Singapore I really wanted tolearn at the parent campus in Adelaiderdquo Ebe said

For new university student Violet Zhang (pictured above) having arrived in Australia from China in2009 and then studying at Eynesbury College shersquos now ready for university life

Orientation week marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for her

ldquoIrsquom really looking forward to studying at university Irsquom excited to be with many different foreignpeople and to make new friends and experience new thingsrdquo said the new Bachelor of Businessstudent

Mary Ann Seow from UniSArsquos Learning and Teaching Unit said the opportunity to network andinteract with other students during Welcome Week was a crucial part of the orientation

ldquoA key feature of Welcome Week is the many opportunities for students to interact with each otherand make new friends by participating in informal fun activities whilst they obtain importantinformation about UniSA and Adelaiderdquo Mary Ann said

Mawson Lakesrsquo safe communityawardThe World Health Organization (WHO) hasrecently announced that Mawson Lakes has beenawarded a lsquoSafe Communities Foundation awardrsquoan award held currently by only 16 othercommunities in Australia

Pro Vice Chancellor in the Division of InformationTechnology Engineering and the EnvironmentProfessor Andrew Parfitt said that UniSA hasplayed an integral part in the development of theMawson Lakes community

ldquoMawson Lakes was conceived as a learning community and UniSA has a pivotal role in ensuringthat a whole range of education opportunities are available to the wider communityrdquo Prof Parfitt said

ldquoUniSA is proud to be a key partner and stakeholder in the development of Mawson Lakes

ldquoThis safe community accreditation bodes well for our campus and our studentsrdquo

Mawson Lakes has been growing steadily since it was established in the late 1990s and now has upto 10000 residents The community includes various education facilities such as child care centresprimary and secondary schools adult and community education and of course the UniSA campus

Prof Parfitt said that Mawson Lakes stakeholders have recognised the importance of communitysafety and the prevention of injuries since it was developed and in 2007 it began its formal journeytowards recognition by the Safe Communities Foundation

The Safe Communities Foundation commended the Mawson Lakes community for its efforts incontinuously improving safety Mawson Lakes joins the 16 communities that have already beenawarded the title in Australia and 276 communities across the world

The Foundation also recognised Mawson Lakes for its emphasis on lifelong learning collaborativeleadership and support extensive safety features initiative in the safety of young children communityengagement positive ageing for seniors and the integration of workplace and community safety

The review team at WHO acknowledged the leadership and support provided by UniSA in the area ofcommunity safety

Conference season at UniSAUniSA has been involved in a range ofconferences recently in a range of fields includingtourism body shape accounting and rural issues

Leading experts in body shape were at the CityWest campus in mid-February for the WorldEngineering Anthropometry ResourceConference

UniSA Associate Professor Verna Blewett said theconference was an opportunity to access thelatest research in anthropometry including 3D body scanning and modelling

ldquoFrom the seats we sit in to the clothes we wear the science of anthropometry is essential to thedesign fit and ergonomics of countless items of daily liferdquo she said

ldquoChanges in lifestyle and nutrition lead to changes in body dimensions anthropometry tracks thesechanges in body dimensions to ensure that products designed for people develop accordinglyrdquo

Earlier in the month UniSA hosted a major tourism conference the Council for AustralianUniversity Tourism and Hospitality 2011 National Conference

UniSA Professor of Tourism Management Graham Brown was one of more than 10 UniSApresenters at the conference He said it was a great opportunity to draw the attention of delegatesfrom around the world to the range of research conducted by people in the School of Management

Meanwhile the relationships between accounting research and professional practice came under thespotlight during a forum at UniSA on February 1 coordinated by the Centre for AccountingGovernance and Sustainability (CAGS) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia

The Forum initiated a dialogue between leading academics and practitioners to address the problemthat accounting research practice and policy making are worlds apart from each other

UniSA Professor of Accounting and Director of CAGS Roger Burritt who initiated and co-chaired theevent stressed the future importance for practitioners and the profession of integrated reporting

ldquoAcademic and practitioner accountants are important transdisciplinary team members in addressingcritical policy issues such as sustainable developmentrdquo Professor Burritt said

There is a need for accountants to engage with related disciplines such as engineering and law tocreate an integrated reporting and accountability system which can help movement towards asustainable society he remarked

Speaking at the opening of the Forum UniSA Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice President Researchand Innovation Professor Caroline McMillen said that the event was a first step towards buildingnetworks critical to address gaps in communications between academic accounting research policymaking and the profession

And in January the South Australian Pharmacy Studentsrsquo Association hosted the 2011 National

This year marked the 10th anniversary of the reformation of the National Australian PharmacyStudentsrsquo Association

Emeritus Professor Lloyd Sansom from UniSArsquos School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences was thekeynote speaker for the opening ceremony of the Congress

Rural focus in Whyalla in 2012

UniSArsquos Whyalla campus is set to become aglobal focal point for rural issues thanks to awinning bid by the Centre for RegionalEngagement to host the Fourth InternationalRural Network World Forum in 2012

Spearheaded by Whyalla-based SeniorResearch Development Manager Jen Clearythe bid displayed a high level of regionalsupport and a strong commitment tocommunity engagement

ldquoWhyalla campus demonstrated an exquisite point of difference in that it really is the nexus whereregional rural and remote meet making it unique from other universitiesrdquo she said

Run by not-for-profit association the International Rural Network the conference aims to giverural communities a stronger voice in policy making debates by bringing together practitionerscommunities rural organisations policy makers and academics from around the world to discussrural issues

ldquoThe focus of the 2012 conference will be the reality of what it means to live in a rural and remotearea in a global contextrdquo Ms Cleary said

The conference is expected to attract between 400 and 600 delegates from up to 50 differentcountries with around a third of attendees to be from developing countries

Belinda who is an Archivist at the Bob Hawke PrimeMinisterial Library will be joining seven othercyclists in March to ride from MelbournersquosFederation Square to Adelaidersquos Victoria Squarefollowing the Great Ocean Road

Each of the riders are participating for a differentreason but as a team they are raising awarenessand funds for the Flinders Medical CentreFoundation and in particular the Flinders Centre ofInnovation in Cancer incorporating the LiveSTRONGCancer Research Centre

ldquoThe challenge of cycling over 1000km in eight days is daunting but do-ablerdquo Belinda said

ldquoItrsquos certainly the greatest cycling challenge Irsquove ever given myself and I have to admit that Irsquom notlooking forward to the pain and fatigue

But Irsquom motivated by knowing that any pain and suffering I go through on the bike is nothingcompared to the pain and suffering that cancer patients and their families go through on a dailybasisrdquo

Belinda started cycling five years ago inspired by the Lance Armstrong story and by her late cousinex-Richmond footballer Jamie Tape

ldquoJamie was a natural athlete and went through his own battle with cancerrdquo Belinda said ldquoHersquos one ofthe people Irsquoll be thinking about a lot on the long road back to Adelaiderdquo

As a member of the Veteran and Ladies Cycling Club in Adelaide Belinda races each weekendaround the suburbs and hills of Adelaide and is also a member of the Cancer Voices SA CyclingTeam Cancer Voices SA represents South Australians whose lives have been affected by cancerthrough advocacy involvement awareness and information

Belinda says that for her cycling is a great tool for stress relief and gives her a lot of energy

ldquoA two-hour ride along the coast or up through the hills before work makes a day in the office mucheasier to deal withrdquo she said ldquoMy colleagues in the Library have been wonderful too while Irsquove beenpreparing for this ride - Irsquove had a lot of support and encouragement from themrdquo

As an Archivist in the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Library at the City West campus Belinda said shereally enjoys working with the archival collections of Bob Hawke Dr Basil Hetzel and RosemaryCrowley

ARC appointment

UniSArsquos Professor Peter Buckskin is aiming to ensure thatAboriginal voices are heard in the Federal Governmentrsquosresearch agenda after being appointed to the AustralianResearch Council (ARC) Advisory Council

Prof Buckskin Dean of the David Unaipon College of IndigenousEducation and Research was one of six new academicsappointed to the Advisory Council by Innovation Minister SenatorKim Carr

Prof Buckskin says his first priority will be to improve the culturalcompetence of the mainstream research community as theycontinue to inquire examine and analyse issues that impact uponAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians

ldquoI will also be building on and promoting the great work ofsuccessful Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander careeracademics who are actively engaged in research andinnovationrdquo Prof Buckskin said

ldquoI am particularly pleased to accept the appointment when we have the exciting challenges happeningwith the introduction of the Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) initiative

Director of the Centre for Asian Business

The new director of the Centre for Asian Business Professor Ying Zhu joined the InternationalSchool of Business team at the start of the month

Prof Zhu joined UniSA from the University of Melbourne where he was the Director of the Masters ofHuman Resource Management Program and Associate Professor in the Department of Managementand Marketing

He worked as an economist in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone between 1984 and 1988 andcompleted a PhD (Melbourne) on lsquothe Role of Export Processing Zones in East Asian Developmentrsquoin 1992

The Centre for Asian Business was officially established at the beginning of 2010 and is a communityof leading academics in the fields of Business Commerce Law Management and Marketingdedicated to producing high quality research on Asian business and broadening the Australianunderstanding of Asian business practices

ldquoResearch on Asian Business is becoming increasingly important given its place under the nationalresearch priority goal of lsquounderstanding our regionrsquo In the case of Australia our international tradeand economic future rely on a greater understanding of the Asian business environmentrdquo Prof Zhusaid

Australia Day honours

Jill Slay Research Dean in the Division of Information Technology the Environment and Engineeringhas been honoured with an Australia Day Award

Professor Slay was made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her service to the informationtechnology industry through contributions in the areas of forensic computer science securityprotection of infrastructure and cyber-terrorism

Prof Slay began researching cybercrime after the September 11 attacks when she realised there wasa gap in the research market on how the internet could be used for crime in the future She hasbecome one of Australiarsquos leading experts in this area

Prof Slay regularly works with State and Federal authorities on cyber crime issues

Graduate Studies office opening

UniSArsquos new Graduate Research Centre officially opened in January The Centre is based on the CityWest campus and provides valuable services information and resources to research students andstaff to support a high quality research degrees experience at UniSA

The prize aims to help journalism students to think beyondsensationalist treatments and consider broader issues such as theunderlying causes of abuse and neglect and preventativestrategies

Visiting astronauts from France and Korea touched down atUniSArsquos Mawson Lakes campus in January for a newly launchedinternational space education program

Both in Adelaide for the first time the astronauts shared theirspace flight experiences with 43 students from a range ofcountries and scientific disciplines as part of the five-weekintensive live-in Southern Hemisphere Space Program run byUniSA in partnership with the International Space University

Visiting French engineer Jean-Jacques Favier was aboardNASArsquos 1996 Space Shuttle Columbia flight while South Koreanscientist Soyeon Yi (pictured right) became the first Koreanwoman to fly in space in 2008 aboard the Soyuz TMA-12spacecraft thanks to a cooperative agreement between theRussian Federal Space Agency and the Korean AerospaceResearch Institute

First selected as an astronaut candidate by the French Space Agency in 1985 Dr Favier underwentyears of training with both NASA and the Russian Federal Space Agency before being chosen as oneof a seven man crew to spend 17 days aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1996 the longestspace shuttle flight in history

Dr Favier oversaw forty-three different experiments three of which he had prepared himself

ldquoWe had very very busy days I can tell you because on the Space Station people can stay for threeto six months so they have more time to relax but in the shuttle flight we were working 14-hour daysrdquoDr Favier said

ldquoBefore breakfast I and the other scientist on board had to draw blood and collect our urine becauseat that time the Space Station had not been built and we were kind of the guinea pigs for science

ldquoBreakfast was the best part of the day because we ate looking out the window which was veryinteresting for me because when we started eating we were above the Mediterranean Sea a region Iknow very well of course and then by the time we had finished eating we were over Japan

ldquoThen we would start working everybody on their own procedures we were in the same laboratoryfor hours but everyone was working separatelyrdquo

For Russian-trained Soyeon Yi who flew more than a decade later with two Russian crew membersthe experience was equally exciting

ldquoMost of all itrsquos fantastic because you can fly like Peter Pan But to have those types of fantasticexperiences you also have to bear motion sickness and be uncomfortablerdquo Dr Yi said

ldquoBecause therersquos no gravity nothing can be put down on the table or the floor so doing anything isdifficult but itrsquos worth it because being in space is really free - emotionally physically and mentally I

could not imagine feeling any more freedomrdquo she said

The Korean Government picked 18 different experiments for Dr Yi to carry out on the space mission

ldquoThe professional researchers were from various fields including chemistry biology physicselectrical engineering mechanical engineering and biomedical sciencerdquo Dr Yi said

ldquoEach experiment had its own researchers its own staff who had a plan for their experiment so I wastrained on how to do each onerdquo she said

Her training in emergency procedures was also put to the test when the capsule encounteredproblems re-entering the earthrsquos atmosphere

ldquoWe had a ballistic re-entry meaning we were relying solely on drag in the atmosphere to slow downthe capsule but before we left we were trained in how to handle it so I think it was a great chance toprove that I did my best during the trainingrdquo she said

After returning home from the flight Dr Yi was inspired to learn more about space and enrolled at theInternational Space University where she eventually became part of the faculty who recommendedher to visit UniSA with the Southern Hemisphere Space Program

ldquoMost of all I want to say that I really appreciate this chance being given to me and I really appreciatecoming to Australia UniSA has supported me so much and if itrsquos possible Irsquod love to work with UniSAin the futurerdquo Dr Yi said

The Southern Hemisphere Space Program targets space professionals graduates and seniorundergraduates and will be taught in Adelaide at UniSArsquos Mawson Lakes campus by academics fromUniSA and the International Space University for the next three years

Queensland-based mechanical engineering student DavidGroves has been working towards a career in space researchever since he can remember

ldquoI always dreamed about space since I was a little kid and builtrockets myself and played around with them and when I heardabout this course at UniSA I thought it sounded reallyinteresting and would be fun to be a part ofrdquo David said

ldquoWe had a session with Soyeon last night and it was really goodto talk about her experiences in space itrsquos amazing to be part ofsomething with the first Frenchman to go into space with theAmericans and the Korean who went with Russia it was verycool

ldquoProbably the biggest thing though is the connections and thepeople you get to meet from this and just after the sessions ifyou need to talk to them then you can and they can help youout and know who you arerdquo

All 43 students complete the same subjects and exams in ninespace-related subjects ranging from engineering and law and policy to space and society andbusiness and management

Students are divided into groups and allocated different projects which they must present at theend of the course

Melbournian aerospace engineer Crystal Forrester said her group has done a lot of backgroundresearch and is really getting into the project

ldquoThe group project is to look at the needs and capabilities of the southern hemisphere and howwe can use space to assist those needs and to develop those capabilitiesrdquo Crystal said

ldquoWersquove come up with four main topics that wersquore now focusing on and for each of those therersquoll besome recommendations where theyrsquoll cover everything from legal financial engineering andsocial aspects so that those countries can look at it and say okay this is a good idea and we canimplement itrdquo

Crystal said working with people from different countries was a great way to broaden herunderstanding of space

ldquoYoursquove got one viewpoint and getting all these different interpretations just helps you understandother people betterrdquo Crystal said

ldquoIrsquod love to get involved in the space industry in more of an engineering role so helping to designsystems both in Australia and overseas to really get into that and become involved in the heart ofit would be really goodrdquo

ldquoWith health professionals the perceived wisdom is that a lot of people who work in a country areahave a country backgroundrdquo Thompson says

ldquoWe challenge that by getting the people who donrsquot have a rural background up here to try itrdquo

The 2010-2011 crop of scholars included Kate Beaton and Sarah Liston both in their third year ofBachelor of Health Science degrees

Kate worked on a project tackling the links between mental health and cognition in young men whileSarah contributed to an examination of the experiences of immigrant aged-care workers in regionalSouth Australia

The chance to do ldquohands onrdquo research relevant to their degrees in a small supportive researchcommunity which includes not only the SGRHS and CRE but also the Centre for Rural Health andCommunity Development alongside five other vacation scholars was a plus

ldquoWe were all in the same room and the same spotrdquo student Sarah says ldquoItrsquos relaxed people areapproachable

For Kate 30 the investigation into the links between cognition and depression was a fascinatingchance to put theory learned in lectures to practical use

ldquoOpen spaces stars sunsets and friendly peoplersquorsquo were an added bonus she says

Thompson says that in the programrsquos seven years scholars have been mostly female and aretypified by a sense of independence and adventure which will stand them in good steadprofessionally

ldquoBeing a researcher can be isolating and you need to be able to cope with that Someone with a spritthatrsquos not easily daunted is more than likely to succeed in those circumstancesrdquo Thompson says

ldquoAnd after graduation Vacation Scholars who choose to practice in rural areas have a head-start

ldquoLetrsquos take for example two young physiotherapists graduating One comes to the country one staysin the city The city physio will most likely be in a specialist position with a fairly narrow range ofresponsibilities

ldquoThe country physio will get to do everything ndash old people young people post-surgical rehabilitationsports injuries lung rehabilitation post-heart-attack exercise programs

ldquoIf in a couple of years they both apply for a seniorrsquos position the country person will nearly alwayswin because they have had so much more experience

ldquoIronically that contributes to turnover of professionals in the country but thatrsquos another storyrdquo

Visiting astronauts from France and Korea touched down atUniSArsquos Mawson Lakes campus in January for a newly launchedinternational space education program

Both in Adelaide for the first time the astronauts shared theirspace flight experiences with 43 students from a range ofcountries and scientific disciplines as part of the five-weekintensive live-in Southern Hemisphere Space Program run byUniSA in partnership with the International Space University

Visiting French engineer Jean-Jacques Favier was aboardNASArsquos 1996 Space Shuttle Columbia flight while South Koreanscientist Soyeon Yi (pictured right) became the first Koreanwoman to fly in space in 2008 aboard the Soyuz TMA-12spacecraft thanks to a cooperative agreement between theRussian Federal Space Agency and the Korean AerospaceResearch Institute

First selected as an astronaut candidate by the French Space Agency in 1985 Dr Favier underwentyears of training with both NASA and the Russian Federal Space Agency before being chosen as oneof a seven man crew to spend 17 days aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1996 the longestspace shuttle flight in history

Dr Favier oversaw forty-three different experiments three of which he had prepared himself

ldquoWe had very very busy days I can tell you because on the Space Station people can stay for threeto six months so they have more time to relax but in the shuttle flight we were working 14-hour daysrdquoDr Favier said

ldquoBefore breakfast I and the other scientist on board had to draw blood and collect our urine becauseat that time the Space Station had not been built and we were kind of the guinea pigs for science

ldquoBreakfast was the best part of the day because we ate looking out the window which was veryinteresting for me because when we started eating we were above the Mediterranean Sea a region Iknow very well of course and then by the time we had finished eating we were over Japan

ldquoThen we would start working everybody on their own procedures we were in the same laboratoryfor hours but everyone was working separatelyrdquo

For Russian-trained Soyeon Yi who flew more than a decade later with two Russian crew membersthe experience was equally exciting

ldquoMost of all itrsquos fantastic because you can fly like Peter Pan But to have those types of fantasticexperiences you also have to bear motion sickness and be uncomfortablerdquo Dr Yi said

ldquoBecause therersquos no gravity nothing can be put down on the table or the floor so doing anything isdifficult but itrsquos worth it because being in space is really free - emotionally physically and mentally I

could not imagine feeling any more freedomrdquo she said

The Korean Government picked 18 different experiments for Dr Yi to carry out on the space mission

ldquoThe professional researchers were from various fields including chemistry biology physicselectrical engineering mechanical engineering and biomedical sciencerdquo Dr Yi said

ldquoEach experiment had its own researchers its own staff who had a plan for their experiment so I wastrained on how to do each onerdquo she said

Her training in emergency procedures was also put to the test when the capsule encounteredproblems re-entering the earthrsquos atmosphere

ldquoWe had a ballistic re-entry meaning we were relying solely on drag in the atmosphere to slow downthe capsule but before we left we were trained in how to handle it so I think it was a great chance toprove that I did my best during the trainingrdquo she said

After returning home from the flight Dr Yi was inspired to learn more about space and enrolled at theInternational Space University where she eventually became part of the faculty who recommendedher to visit UniSA with the Southern Hemisphere Space Program

ldquoMost of all I want to say that I really appreciate this chance being given to me and I really appreciatecoming to Australia UniSA has supported me so much and if itrsquos possible Irsquod love to work with UniSAin the futurerdquo Dr Yi said

The Southern Hemisphere Space Program targets space professionals graduates and seniorundergraduates and will be taught in Adelaide at UniSArsquos Mawson Lakes campus by academics fromUniSA and the International Space University for the next three years

Queensland-based mechanical engineering student DavidGroves has been working towards a career in space researchever since he can remember

ldquoI always dreamed about space since I was a little kid and builtrockets myself and played around with them and when I heardabout this course at UniSA I thought it sounded reallyinteresting and would be fun to be a part ofrdquo David said

ldquoWe had a session with Soyeon last night and it was really goodto talk about her experiences in space itrsquos amazing to be part ofsomething with the first Frenchman to go into space with theAmericans and the Korean who went with Russia it was verycool

ldquoProbably the biggest thing though is the connections and thepeople you get to meet from this and just after the sessions ifyou need to talk to them then you can and they can help youout and know who you arerdquo

All 43 students complete the same subjects and exams in ninespace-related subjects ranging from engineering and law and policy to space and society andbusiness and management

Students are divided into groups and allocated different projects which they must present at theend of the course

Melbournian aerospace engineer Crystal Forrester said her group has done a lot of backgroundresearch and is really getting into the project

ldquoThe group project is to look at the needs and capabilities of the southern hemisphere and howwe can use space to assist those needs and to develop those capabilitiesrdquo Crystal said

ldquoWersquove come up with four main topics that wersquore now focusing on and for each of those therersquoll besome recommendations where theyrsquoll cover everything from legal financial engineering andsocial aspects so that those countries can look at it and say okay this is a good idea and we canimplement itrdquo

Crystal said working with people from different countries was a great way to broaden herunderstanding of space

An innovative scholarship hosted at UniSArsquos Whyalla campus isgiving young researchers a career head start ndash and a taste of whatit means to work as professionals outside the big smoke

Saltbush scrub wide open horizons and red dust itrsquos a far cry fromthe stereotypical image of white-coated researchers toiling atcomputer screens in a fluorescent-lit lab

But each year students selected for Whyallarsquos VacationScholarship Program swap the concrete jungle for outbackadventure working with experienced researchers at the Whyallacampus on some of the toughest health and social problems facingrural communities today

Hosted jointly by the Spencer Gulf Rural Health School (SGRHS)and the Centre for Regional Engagement (CRE) the Scholarshipsare much more than a country holiday coordinator Chris Thompsonsays

ldquoBy the time they go back to university the next year theyrsquove gotsome research under their belts which is great academically theyrsquove got some professional workexperience which is a career boost and theyrsquove seen a bit of life outside the big smoke saysThompson a pharmacist academic and former city-slicker who moved to Whyalla in 1986

Running for seven years the program flips stereotypes about working in the country on their head ndashincreasingly valuable in a climate where attracting professionals in any field to rural practice is fraughtwith difficulties

ldquoWith health professionals the perceived wisdom is that a lot of people who work in a country areahave a country backgroundrdquo Thompson says

ldquoWe challenge that by getting the people who donrsquot have a rural background up here to try itrdquo

The 2010-2011 crop of scholars included Kate Beaton and Sarah Liston both in their third year ofBachelor of Health Science degrees

Kate worked on a project tackling the links between mental health and cognition in young men whileSarah contributed to an examination of the experiences of immigrant aged-care workers in regionalSouth Australia

The chance to do ldquohands onrdquo research relevant to their degrees in a small supportive researchcommunity which includes not only the SGRHS and CRE but also the Centre for Rural Health andCommunity Development alongside five other vacation scholars was a plus

ldquoWe were all in the same room and the same spotrdquo student Sarah says ldquoItrsquos relaxed people areapproachable

UniSArsquos Civil Aviation students are the eyes in thesky protecting metropolitan beach-goers from sharksthis summer as part of the annual shark patrolprogram run in partnership with the StateEmergency Services (SES)

For second-year Civil Aviation student and first-timeshark-spotter Ryan Meyles (pictured below) it didnrsquottake long to get the hang of his role as observer aspart of a three-man flight-crew that also includes apilot and communications officer

ldquoOn my first shift I saw five sharks swimmingtogether at Henley jetty I couldnrsquot tell what type ofsharks they were but they were pretty smallrdquo Ryan said

ldquoWhen I see a shark I call out to the rest of the crew and the pilot then has to ask for clearance fromthe Adelaide Air Traffic Control to circle above the sharks

ldquoIf therersquos people swimming or on the beach nearby then the communications officer operates thesiren and calls the South Australian Police to give them details of where the sharks are and where thepeople are

ldquoBut in that case on my first shift there werenrsquot any people swimmingrdquo he said

The UniSA shark patrols fly four times daily on weekdays fromlate November to April between 11am and 8pm with theWestpac lifesaving helicopter taking over patrol duties on theweekend

The UniSA crews fly Cessna 172Srsquos from Parafield to OuterHarbour and down to Sellicks Beach and then from Parafield toOuter Harbour and Rapid Bay each morning before refuellingand heading out again to complete the same two loops in theafternoon

The patrol is a great opportunity for students with theircommercial licence to build up their flying hours and give them anedge when looking for that elusive first job something Ryan isaiming towards next season

ldquoWhen I finish this course I want to get a job instructing other people trying to get commercial pilotslicenses then I want to work my way up as a commercial pilotrdquo Ryan said

According to UniSArsquos Head of Aviation Stephen Phillips Ryanrsquos skills as a pilot will be in hot demand

ldquoAustralian aviation education providers need to increase pilot instructor numbers by at least 15 per

cent over the next five years to avoid serious pilot shortages in the futurerdquo Phillips said

ldquoPilots are in demand in all sorts of fields ranging from lsquofly-in fly outrsquo for mining industry charter andair ambulance services as instructors and with regional national or international airlinesrdquo he said

For the eleventh year UniSA sponsoredAustraliarsquos national team in Adelaidersquosinternational pro cycling event the Santos TourDown Under which was held from January 16-23and attracted a record crowd of 772000 people

With one of the best line-ups of elite Australiancyclists yet Team UniSA-Australia performedstrongly during the six stage race in SouthAustralia dominating the King of the Mountaincompetition

Team UniSA ended up with three riders placing inthe top 10 of the King of the Mountain competition with South Australian rider Luke Roberts winningthe overall title Victorian Mitch Docker who rides for team Skil-Shimano in Holland placed third whileWest Australian Luke Durbridge who is the Australian Mens Under 23 Time Trial Champion cameseventh in the King of the Mountain Docker also fared well in the Sprints competition (eighth) afterleading breakaways in the race during Stages One and Two

Roberts also took home the Tanya Denver Memorial Award forthe highest placed South Australian in the international procycling event after finishing tenth overall in the Tour while TeamUniSA finished eleventh overall in the Teams Classification

Olivia Brokate (pictured right) is one UniSA student who hasbeen able to use her coursework to her advantage during theTour The Marketing Management student who is just finishingher course worked with the Marketing and Development Unit fora few months assisting with the many events and organisationalissues that the Unit coordinates during the Tour week

Olivia was offered the contract role after undertaking a successfulmarketing practicum in the Unit and putting in extra voluntaryhours at events like Open Day

Working with the Unit for 10 weeks before and during the TourOlivia said being involved in an international event has beenhuge and that it was great to see how so many units withinUniSA worked together on the event

ldquoIt was really valuable seeing how everyone pulls together to make the event happen and to see allthe different ways that the University got involved in the event to capitalise on its sponsorshiprdquo Oliviasaid

ldquoIrsquove just been listening and absorbing it all taking in how much goes on behind the scenes of a majorevent like this

ldquoI have been interested in working in events and this was a perfect way to work out if this is what Ireally enjoy Itrsquos been a great experience ndash when you are passionate about the brand you really wantit to be a successrdquo

Olivia encourages other students to work hard make the most of every opportunity and to volunteerfor work

ldquoI had to give up a lot of free time to do this but itrsquos been a great experiencerdquo she said ldquoBecause Iwould have given up anything to work on the Tour with UniSA but I had to give up other things to earnthe opportunity in the first placerdquo

Amy Weydling (pictured right) is another student who hasbenefited from the Tour Amy is in her final year of Tourism andEvent Management and spent the week working for Tour sponsorSkoda promoting its cars Amy applied for the job after seeing itadvertised in an CareerOne email the she receives regularlythrough the University

She said the experience was invaluable especially watching howher manager Kate Tancred handled the event

ldquoBeing around Kate who has worked in the industry has been agreat experience hellip seeing how she runs itrdquo Amy said

Kate who is based interstate hired nine UniSA students for theevent

ldquoI wanted locals who had a good grasp of the areas we weretravelling to but itrsquos also really good to have people whounderstand sponsorship from a commercial sense because oftheir UniSA studyrdquo Kate said

ldquoAnd for the students itrsquos all about getting out and being able to learn from this experiencerdquo
