Furthermore, there is a need to update most of the type localities of thespecies,which are difficult to trace today because either they were poorly documented originally, or their political names have changed. The bulk of studies on the mosquito fauna of Uganda were undertaken by British scientists who worked in Uganda between 1900 and the 196Os, including, among others, F. V. Theobald, F. W. Edwards, A. M. E.vans, E. C. C. Van Someren, A. J. Haddow and J. D. Gillett. Since the early 19705, 51 there have been only a limited number of,studies on the mosquito fa'l;Ula of Uganda. This paper is a compilation of information on all the 88 nominal species ofmosquitoes originally described from localities in Uganda. The list of species consists of all the nominalspecies that are valid or currently considered as synonyms. They are arranged in the sequence used by Knight and Stone (1977). Where the name of the originally described species is the juniorsynonym, the name of the senior synonym (the name that the species is called presently) is indicated and given in parentheses. Example as in No.2. For simplicity of presentation, only the names of the original authors and the type have been presented.

Abstract-A list of 88 nominal taxa of mosquito species (Diptera: Culicidae) originally describedfrom Uganda is given. The list includes 68 valid species, 7 subspecies, 6 varieties, and 7 synonyms,within 10 tribes, 14 genera, and 13 subgenera. All 3 subfamilies of Culicidae (Anophelinae,Toxorhynchitinae, and Culicinae) are represented. The type localities of the different species areupdated forquick identification based on the presentpolitical boundaries within Uganda. The speciesstages that are as yet not fully described in the literature, and those species whose breeding habitatsare unknown are indicated.

INTRODUCTION

I nformation on the biodiversity of mosquitospecies in Uganda is sparse. Furthermore,there is a need to update most of the type

localities of the species, which are difficult to tracetoday because either they were poorlydocumented originally, or their political nameshave changed.

The bulk of studies on the mosquito fauna ofUganda were undertaken by British scientists whoworked in Uganda between 1900 and the 196Os,including, among others, F. V. Theobald, F. W.Edwards, A. M. E.vans, E. C. C. Van Someren, A. J.Haddow and J. D. Gillett. Since the early 19705,

there have been only a limited number of,studieson the mosquito fa'l;Ula of Uganda.

This paper is a compilation of information onall the 88 nominal species ofmosquitoes originallydescribed from localities in Uganda. The list ofspecies consists of all the nominal species that arevalid or currently considered as synonyms. Theyare arranged in the sequence used by Knight andStone (1977). Where the name of the originallydescribed species is the juniorsynonym, the nameof the senior synonym (the name that the speciesis called presently) is indicated and given inparentheses. Example as in No.2. For simplicityof presentation, only the names of the originalauthors and the type l~calityhave been presented.

The corrected type locality is set in parentheses.Type materials were not examined during thisstudy, but the name of the depository where thetype specimens were deposited are presented asabbreviations. A few notes have been added to thelist particularly concerning the status ofdescription of the different stages where somestages of the individual species have not beendescribed~ and also the breeding habitat whereimmatures of the species could be found.

It is hoped that this paper will stimulateinterest in the further study of the undescribed orpartially described stages of some of the speciesand their bionomics. There is also a need to starta reference collection of the mosquito species inUganda.

6. Anopheles hancocki Edwards, 1929.(Originally described as Anopheles theilerivar. hancocki Edwards). Type locality =Kampala (Kampala district, CentralUganda). Type depository =BM. Larvaefound in clear water in well-vegetatedswamps.

7. Anopheles weUcomei subsp. ugandae '6vans,1934. (Originally described as Anophelesdistictus var. Ugandae Evans). Type locality=King's Lake area, Kampala, (Kampaladistrict, Central Uganda). Type depository=8M. .Larvae in permanent swamp areas.

10. Aedes gibbinsi Edwards, 1935. Type locality= Namwamba valley (2440 m above SQa

level) on Mountain Rwenzori, (BundibugyoDistrict, Western Uganda). Type depository=BM. Larvae were also found betweenMountains Mgahinga and Sabinio, inKigezi district, (Kisoro district,Southwestern Uganda), at the border ofUganda and Democratic Republic ofCongo. Larvae were also found atKameranjoka in Bwamba, Bundibugyodistrict in Western Uganda. It is a highlandspecies found in small, highly shaded,ground pools in bambQo forests.

11. Aedes hopkinsi Edwards, 1936. Type locality=Lira (Lira district, North Uganda). 'lYpedepository = BM. Larvae were alsocollected from Kampala and Entebbe inCentral Uganda.

12. Aedes insolens Edwards, 1936. Type locality=Arua, Northwestern Uganda (most likelyArua or Nebbi districts, NorthwesternUganda). Type depository =BM. Breedingplace not known; suspected to be groundpools or swamps. Larvae, pupae and femaleadults of the species are not described.

13. Aedes leptolabis Edwards, 1936. Type locaUty=Nabadzidza near Kampala (Nabazziza,Kampala district, Central'Uganda). Typedepository =BM. Females of this speciesha ve not beendescribed. Larvae werefound in temporary rain pools in denseforests.

14. Aedes mutilus Edwards, 1936. Type locality=Mpanga Forest, Toro district (Kabaroledistrict, Western Uganda). Type depository=BM. Larvae were also collected fromKampala, Central Uganda.

15. Aedes natroniu~ Edwards, 1932.'IYpe locality=Mwaya and Kitoma, Lake Maseche,Kasese district (one of the saline lakes inthe Queen Elizabeth National Park, Mweya,Kasese district, Western Uganda). Species was also collected from Muko,Southwest of Kabale town, Kabale district.It is a highland species collected at 2440 melevation above sea level. Larvae are foundin bamboo stems bored by caterpillars.Larvae were found in association with thoseof Aedes bambusae Edwards.

34. Culex aurantapex var. jinjaensis Edwards,1941. Type locality =Jinja, Busoga district(linja district, Eastern Uganda). Typedepository =BM. Collected from swampsbordering Lake Victoria. Was also collectedfrom Kampala. Larvae and pupae of thisspecies have not been described.

35. Culex chorley; Edwards, 1941. Type locality= Masaka, Uganda (Masaka district,Western Central Uganda). Type depository=BM. This species was also collected fromKampala and Semliki valley (Bundibugyodistrict). The species was collected fromburrow pits, ditches and open pools inswamps.

37. Clllex hancoki Edwards, 1930. Type locality= Bulambuli (2745 m above sea level) onMountain Eigon (Mbale district, EasternUganda). lYpe depository =BM. Larvaewere collected in rainwater in cut bambooand in bamboo whicp had been bored bylarvae moth. It is a high altitude species.

38. Clllex IIOpkinsi Edwards, 1932.lYpe locality= Kameranjoka, Rwenzori foothills, Torodistrict (Bundibugyo, Western Uganda).lYpe =BM. This species was collected fromNamwamba Valley in the same generallocality as the type locality. Larvae arefound in rock pools.

39. Culex invidiosus var. vexillatus Edwards,1941. Type locality = Kampala (Kampaladistrict, Central Uganda). Type depository:: 8M. Larvae, pupae and female adults ofthis variety have not been described.

40. ClIlex lIluSDrum Edwards, 1932. Type locality=Fort Portal, Toro district (Kabaroledistrict, western Uganda). Type depository'=" 8M. This species was also collected fromLira in North Uganda and aroundKampala. Immatures of this species arefound in axils of wild banana, and Colocasiaspp.
