Article and photos by "Butch" HoraOver the last 2 ½ years of doing the club newslet-

ter I have been privileged to write about over 30 differentclub member’s rides. There has been a couple of racecars, but mostly street rides. This members ride is about aMopar that I thought would never be produced again, afactory pro-duced race car!Mother Moparover the last 8years has done agreat job ofbuilding the newgenerationHEMI enginesthat is verycompetitive. Shehas also done an excellent job of putting these newHEMIs into several different new school muscle cars and

trucks. Butnot sincethe 1960’shas anymanufac-ture built anewfactory(Notintendedfor streetuse) race

car that has been released to the public! Not longago one of our club members was lucky enough toput his hands on one of only 100 2009 DodgeDrag Pak Challengers produced!

Al Gennarelli bought his Drag Pak inOctober 2009 and drove to Michigan with hisfriend Jack to pick it up. To start with, the stockChallenger body comes only in white. Mopar’sengineers had ripped out nearly 1000 lbs. ofequipment that was deemed unnecessary for thetrack. Drag Pak cars rolled down the sameBrampton, Ontario, assembly line as the street cars, except these models are spared the addition ofbody sealer, sound deadening, airbags, ventilation

system and the rear seats. If that wasn’t enough, MotherMopar removed the windshield wiper assembly, side andrear-impact beams and subsequently eliminating anychance the car can be DOT-certified for the street. TheChallenger Drag Race Package does gain some newequipment. Included with each Drag Pak car is a newcomposite lift-off hood (yes, the scoop is functional),polycarbonate windows, manual rack and pinion steering,a lightweight brake system and a good old-fashioned cablethrottle linkage. Mopar also modified the Challenger’swheelbase, shortening it a half inch to 116 inches, andpushed the engine mounts rearward for better weightdistribution.

Al couldn’t wait to get started on building his newtoy. First, the car went to Tommy Galbreaths house inCourtland, Virginia where he installed the 10 point-cage.He then painted inside the engine bay, trunk, jams and thecage appropriately Plum Crazy Purple! He also did thefabricating to install the Dana 60 rear end in it. From therethe car went to the next stage of the build, Petty’s Garagewhere they painted the outside of the car, hooked up allthe wiring, installed gauges and the engine and transmis-sion. Once they were done the car went to Martinsville,

“Chrysler’s New 8-Speed Automatic Transmission”

(Continued on page 9)

Article by "Butch" Hora and pictures from Allpar.com

One of the advantages of working at Hall ChryslerDodge Jeep Ram dealership is getting the inside scoop andseeing when something new is comming out. Chrysler’s new-est technology to improve performance and fuel economy istheir segment exclusive 8-speed automatic transmission, hit-ting the market this year for model year 2012. The first ve-hicles to be offered with the new 3.6 litre 292hp PentastarV6 connected to the new 8 speed transmission will be theDodge Charger and 300 models. It willthen to be followed by all the rear wheeldrive Pentastar applications. Front wheeldrive cars are waiting for the new nine-speed in the near future.

Within Chrysler, the transmissionis called the ZF 8HP45 8-speed. Somesources say it is a ZF design, (ZF is a lead-ing worldwide automotive supplier forDriveline and Chassis Technology with117 production companies in 26 countriesand is one of the ten major automotive sup-pliers worldwide.) while others say therehas been Chrysler engineering involved, but more than likely it incorporated ideasfrom both companies with gearing changesto match Chrysler equipment.

With the Pentastar V6 and the 8 speed transmis-sion, the Chrysler 300 has achieved 0-60 in 7.2 secondsand cruised at 70 mph with the engine purring at a mere1,400 rpm. Gas mileage for this combination is 30 mpg, upfrom 27, with city mileage rising from 19 to 20 mpg. Mostof the transmissions used by Chrysler will be made at theautomaker’s Kokomo, Indiana, Transmission Plant but somewill be built by ZF itself at a new transmission plant inGreenville, South Carolina. Chrysler is investing $300 mil-lion in the Kokomo plant. The new ZF facility, the first ZFplant to make car transmissions in the USA, will also makethe 9-speed automatic transmission for transverse-mountedengine applications that was presented at the North Ameri-can International Auto Show (NAIAS). Groundbreaking forthe new plant is scheduled for February.

The 8-speed automatic transmission comes with theinnovative new touch-shifter on the console with manual shiftcontrol included by means of Chrysler’s new steering wheelmounted paddle shifters. This paddle shift system made itsdebut recently in the 2012 high performance SRT lineup

which are available for test drive at our sponsor, Hall ChryslerDodge Jeep Ram. The V6 8-Speed models will mark thefirst application of the Chrysler paddle shifters on a non-performance model, if you don’t consider the 292 horse-power Dodge Charger a performance model. With their newpaddle shift system, Chrysler has done it 100% right. Theyhave used metal for the shift paddles with a sleek, smoothfinish that adds a great look and feel with plenty of accessi-bility under hard cornering. (The SRT8 has the + and - signsfilled in with black paint, while the V6 uses unpainted im-pressions.) Some paddle systems leave you hunting for the

paddles when you get to crossing over your hands for shift-ing under hard cornering but that is not the case with theChrysler paddle system with the ergonomically perfect le-vers making for quick, smooth shifts.

The paddle shift system from Chrysler mated to the8-speed ZF automatic transmission looks great and per-forms even better. The other component of the new Chrysler8-speed automatic transmission is the unique consolemounted shifter that uses a “slapstick” motion rather thanthe traditional shifter movement. The low profile shifter bearsa similar shape to the old school slapstick shifter and ratherthan the normal PRNDL pattern, the 8-speed automaticshifter has just Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive/Sport mode. When you get in the car and fire it up, the shifter is located inthe middle of the shift console and when you pull it back tomove into reverse, it clicks into gear as indicated on thedash but the shifter does not stay in place, instead returningback to the middle position. As you shift from Reverse intoNeutral, then into Drive or Sport the shifter clicks throughthe gears always returns to the center position.

“How Mopar Put the “Funny” in Funny Cars”

Article by Steve “Bad News” Moth and photos by "Butch" Hora

It was February 1965 when Chrysler introducedthe A/FX cars at the Winter Nationals in Pomona, Califor-nia. There were 12 cars in total built by or under thedirection of Chrysler Corporation. All of the cars but onewere hardtops, the only post car (sedan) was the YankeePeddler built at Dick Branster’s shop in Detroit under thedirection of Chrysler for Bill Flynn. They were all altered15 inches forward in the rear and 10 inches forward in thefront, giving them a 110 inch wheelbase. Very soon afterthey went to Pomona, track announcers started to refer tothese cars as the funny looking cars and then they juststarted calling them "Funny Cars;" that is how the classstarted.

These cars had their chassis/unibody acid dipped, also known as chemical milling. Lightweight fiberglassfenders, hood, doors, trunk lid, and dash replaced factorysteel. Doors had one-piece Plexiglas windows. Raceready total weight was 2600 pounds. All of the factorycars were delivered with the 426 HEMI and a 727automatic transmission or the A 833 four-speed. They allcame with two four-barrel carbs to start with on racinggasoline, but by mid-1965 Hilborn released an injectionmanifold that actually had a Chrysler part number stampedon it which made it legal to run. These cars started theyear running low 11 seconds. By July with the HilbornInjection and alcohol for fuel, they immediately went intothe 9s and soon after that, the Ramchargers posted a 9.70@ 140 mph on 9-inch slicks. More on how this ET andMPH ties in later.

It wasn’t long after that, everyone wanted anAltered Wheel Base, (AWB) Mopar, now enter TedDetar. Ted Detar hailed from Wichita, Kansas, and wasknown as the Wichita Wrench or the Kansas Badman. Hewas a field engineer for Chrysler, a very talented racer, and the engine builder for Gene Snow’s “Rambunctious”

AWB cars until 1968 when he was killed in a testingaccident. Ted converted many cars for racers whowanted to hit the Match Race circuit where these carswere King of the Drags and drawing massive crowds.

The “Bad News” A/FX car that I own and drivenow was originally built as a tribute car in the early 1980sby a gentleman named Jim Henry also from Wichita,Kansas. Jim was a senior in high school in 1965 and wasbeing taught by Ted Detar how to alter these cars with thedirect blueprints and factory secrets from Chrysler. In theearly 1980s the nostalgia craze started, and old cars fromthe 60s began to pop up. People became very interestedin seeing them again because the horsepower days hadbeen gone for over ten years by then and we all werestarting to hunger for the old days again. This was whenJim decided to build a tribute car to honor Ted Detar.Jim’s favorite AWB Detar car from 1965 was called “TheBig Money Dodge”. This car was a 1964 post car with a

1965 Coronet front end, painted factory Garnet Red withgold leaf lettering “Big Money Dodge” painted on thedoors.

My “Bad News” A/FX car that Jim built is a 1964Hardtop with a 1965 Coronet front end and factoryGarnet Red with gold leaf lettering “Bad News” on thedoors. The Detar independent cars were mostly built withstraight axlefront ends andleaf spring frontsuspension, making themslightly lighterthan the factoryk-member withtorsion bars andso is my car. JimHenry ran this car during the 1980s and 1990s throughoutthe Midwest with a Chrysler B wedge motor and Hilborn

Fast forward to 2005 and Steve now owns “BadNews.” He got busy building a Keith Black stage 10HEMI with Hilborn Injection running on alcohol. On June12, 2010 at the Mopar Madness show at Virginia

MotorsportsPark, hepostedhis firstall-out 1/4 mile runon thefreshengine

and went 9.71 @ 140.0 mph, on 9-inch slicks. That firstall-out pass rivaled the first all-out pass by theRamchargers when they switched to Hilborn with Alcoholin mid-1965.

This year “Bad News” came back to VMP as aTMC member and posted a career best of 9.61 @ 142mph! The weekend was supposed to match “Bad News”with the “HURRI-CAIN II” Barracuda in a best of threematch race, but it wasn’t to be. On Friday night the“HURRI-CAIN II” showed up for some final testingbefore the match race and proceeded to rip the axelhousing from spring perches and pitch the driveshaft. The

“HURRI-CAIN II” isan exact copyof the real carfrom 1967campaignedout ofWilmington,

Mass., by Bob Cain whose father owned a Plymouthdealership, Fred Cain Motors.

Fran Olson of North Carolina sought the permis-sion of the Cain family to replicate this car as it was hisfavorite car at the time running the Funny Car circuit. TheCain family gave Fran their blessing and all the picturesthey had so he could replicate every detail of the originalcar; they even gave him the original wheels from the realcar. The real car was destroyed in 1969 or 1970.

“Bad News” and the “HURRI-CAIN II” showthe extreme changes in the class in a very short two-year

time period. Bythe spring of1966 the alteredwheelbase carsof the yearbefore foundthemselvesobsolete asFord introducedthree flip-topfiberglass style Funny Cars that went to Don Nicolson,Fast Eddie Shartman and Jack Chrisman. Chryslerwanted to stay with the unibody factory chassis andelected to build onto it with a stretched tube front end andutilize the smaller body Darts and Barracudas with the rearaltered just as the year before. This change added to thewheelbase of the cars upping it to 120 plus inches. Thisnew combination was very successful even though theFords had a tubed chassis built by Logghe Stamping Co.and a flip-top fiberglass body.

More changes came in 1967 when flip-topfiberglass Funny Cars started to show up everywhere, butChrysler said they don’t sell flip top bodies or plastic carsand would continue to use the steel quarter panel withunibody cars stretching the front ends and adding fiber-glass parts as needed. In that very short two-year span, tire compounds for slicks improved tenfold and tires gotmuch taller and wider thus creating bite that the cars twoyears earlier never dreamed of. The racers also realizedthat the front of the cars needed to get lower to keep the

air from getting under and causing drag. So when you see“Bad News” and the “HURRI-CAIN II” side by side, youcan see the drastic changes in a very short two-yearperiod.

By spring of 1968 the altered wheelbase cars of1965, 1966 and 1967 were so antiquated they becamenearly extinct overnight. Even Chrysler decided that tostay in the Funny Car game they had to go to full-tubechassis cars and full fiberglass bodies to remain competi-tive, spelling the end of the A/FX cars and the birth of full(blown) Funny Cars as we know today.

Shop Hemi/ Arrington Performance the club’s new-est sponsor has a long history of racing behind it. OriginallyArrington Performance was established to build the best high-performance engines for professional NASCAR and NHRArace teams. Some of the most demanding drivers have turnedto Arrington, including Penske, Petty, and Ganassi. Once theword hit the streets that these racers were using ArringtonEngines, many others wanted them to build their race carsand their personal cars too. The reputation of high qualitystroked HEMI engines and custom performance parts spreadquickly. They are continuously working hard to introduce in-novative new applications for new generation of late modelAmerican muscle cars, classics and hot rods. The companyoperates from a 105,000 sq. foot facility in Martinsville, Vir-ginia that houses the finest race engine development, manu-facturing and testing program in the business. They are on the

cutting edge of newest technology available and they inviteyou to come out to take the tour of their facility. Their team ofrace-seasoned engine builders, tuners, machinists and dynooperators is second to none in racing. They are a key Re-search and Development arm of Dodge Motorsports, a win-ner of many Dodge Manufacturing Awards, as well as mul-tiple winners of the Craftsman Truck Series ManufacturerAwards and Engine Builders Awards.

Back in the day stock car racing was really taking offand getting faster. It was in the 1960’s when Richard Petty andhis pal Buddy Arrington began driving cars that were poweredby the monster hemispherical combustion chamber engine calledthe “HEMI”. Buddy was born July 26, 1938 in Penhook, south-central Virginia, 25 miles from the Martinsville Speedway. Buddybegan racing when he felt the power of a rear-wheel drive Moparunder him. His love for Chrysler products started when he wasyoung. He used to race HEMI’s up and down the roads of Vir-ginia with friends, later becoming a fan of the Petty’s. “Once youstart with something, and you like it, you stay with it,” Buddywould say. Buddy raced informally on the streets with great suc-cess. No one could beat Buddy in his ’60 Plymouth Fury.

In 1964 Richard and his Plymouth won the first of what

would become a record-setting 7 Daytona 500s. Buddy’s sonstarted tinkering with those engines to squeeze ever more powerout of these machines. Soon it wasn’t long before anybody couldbuy a Hemi engine, but the trick for the track was to make theirengines better and faster. Winning race drivers know that theirunder-the-hood power is part science and part feel. It was therein the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains that the power to winbecame an art form. Today their staff is still made up of raceseasoned Hemi engine experts, engineers and builders and theyare still the best in the business.

Their passion for winning has shaped the face of thebusiness. Arrington Performance is arguably the premier raceengine technology company in the industry. API’s team of race-seasoned engine builders, tuners, machinists and dyno operatorsis second to none in racing. They literally worked hand-in-handwith Dodge engineers to develop the feared R5 P7, the enginethat powered Dodge back into NASCAR racing and are stilltweaking power from the new Dodge R6 P8. It didn’t hurt to bea stone’s throw from Martinsville Speedway, NASCAR’s his-toric short track. Later in 2007, Russ Wicks would take the newDodge power to even set the current world’s stock car speedrecord (244.9 mph) in a Dodge Charger powered by an Arringtonengine.

What most people don’t know is that you can actuallybuy an Arrington-modified Hemi to drop into your own car. Orthat Arrington offers unique stuff that simply isn’t available any-where else. Everything from a 90mm “drive by wire” throttlebody, ready to drop into your muscle car, all the way to the wholecar. Arrington street editions are classics converted into modernsupercars. Like our SRT-8 Chrysler 300LX powered by a 426Hemi with Arrington NASCAR Grade 4.080b x 4.080s blockand rotating assembly putting out 585 HP. It is loaded with highquality parts and is specially tuned for both street drivability andmoney-winning track power when you want it.

This is their proven process:1 – You drop off your vehicle at their shop where your car will belocked in their climate controlled installation facility.2 – The teardown begins as they remove the engine from yourvehicle. Then they move the engine to the disassembly bay forteardown and initial inspection. The Hemi undergoes its initialinspection for damage to pistons, heads, crank journals, etc. Thisevaluation helps them determine the quality of a core and it pro-vides feedback to their engineers allowing them to improve qual-ity and durability guaranteeing the best HEMI performance parts.3 – Cleaning begins in their environmentally friendly parts wash-ers. They clean all engine parts from block to bolts. Removingthe oil and buildup from the cylinder walls and cooling passagesin your engine allows us to do final testing on cleaner than newparts before they are approved for a rebuild.4 – Inspection and build stations this is where final inspectionssuch as magna-flux testing, sonic checking, and verification of

("TMC Sponsor Spotlight", Continued from page 6)critical measurements such as deck height, bore, cylinder wallthickness, and more are completed to the tenths of a thousandthof an inch. To properly assess the core quality and set up theComputer Numerical Control, (CNC) machines allows them toprovide precise cubic inch displacements, volumetric efficiencyand calculate precise swept volume. It is critical that these mea-surements meet minimum tolerances before and after the blockand cylinder heads are machined.5 – Cylinder block de-burring and grinding is keep in a separatearea of the building under negative pressure to decrease thechances of fine particulates produced during the rough processesfrom contaminating the engine installation and assembly areas.Hand de-burring and grinding decreases the sharp edges andbegins the smoothing process of imperfections in HEMI engineblock surfaces. If not smoothed these could develop into cracksunder the prolonged strains of high horsepower and torque6 – The CNC Cylinder boring begins, they mean precise. Thecylinder bore is accurate down to the tenth of a thousandth of aninch. (.0001”) Cylindricity and concentricity are keys to highhorsepower HEMI engines. If your cylinders are out of round oralignment is off, when force is applied to the piston through com-bustion or boost you set yourself up for failure. This CNC proce-dure ensures alignment of cylinders relative to the mainline, andaligns cylinder bore centers with companion cylinders.7 – Next is the cylinder finishing or final hone, all cylinder fin-ishes aren’t produced in the same manner. From boosted appli-cations with tons of force requiring cylinder sealing, medium fin-ishes for NA HEMI engines, and diamond mirror finishes on aNASCAR Sprint Cup series all have different requirements. Everycylinder has to be finished properly to perform at its peak, with-out creating frictional loss. Different roughness and RA scalesare used for precise cylinder finishes to ensure quality sealingand combustion.8 – Balancing is not a step to skip, balancing only takes onemachine. Adding or removing material is what produces a bal-anced final product. That takes another 2 machines. They useCNC Lathes and 3 axis CNC drill presses to remove or addmaterial to the crank then return to the balancer for evaluation. After that they polish the crank to remove any surfaces that cantrap oil or fine particles. So in total our balanced HEMI crank-shaft takes 4 machines to produce. Sound complicated? Theydo all this to the gram and the .0001” so that our crankshaftsproduce no vibrations and are perfectly balanced. Every coun-terweight, rod journal, and main journal is machined to the exactsize and weight proper for your application.9 – Valve seats, when they are asked how many angles ourvalve job is they say none. Their Newen Epoch CNC valve jobis a single point operation. The angles and steps are so small thatthey are reduced to a near true radius. From there the heads aretaken to a 5 axis CNC mill where ports specifically designed toproduce maximum air velocity from intake and exhaust portsare machined. Finally these heads are taken to assembly wherestrengthened springs, keepers, and retainers are installed in thecasting.

10 - The Machine Shop is available for a custom job for hire or toassist our techs with a modification needed for proper assemblyof your hemi engine, our complete machine shop is ready towork. You name it; we can do it down to the smallest of details orthe roughest of cuts. 4 -5 full axis CNC machines and a host ofother smaller machines, lathes, and measurement tools are pre-cise down to measurements that the human eye will never seeand can be utilized for one off tooling or volume production. Why 5 Axis CNC? Precision 5 axis CNC machines are capableof ultra-fine accuracy, and guarantee that your performance partor custom mount is machined to perform. These machines areliquid cooled to reduce fatigue caused by excessive heating ofsensitive materials during the machining process. Automatic toolselection and machining ensures quality and precise locations, sizes, and thickness of the material being machined11 – Clean it again! After all machining and preparation is com-plete, all parts and HEMI engine blocks return to the washers. A200 degree engine block washer opens pores in cylinders to makesure not even the smallest of particles remain that can stop up oilpassages in our engines. Cylinder cleanliness is important forfinal assembly and prolonged intense operation. Final white towelcleaning by hand ensures proper cylinder sealing and ensures nodirt or grime will cause piston rings or mechanical parts to fail.12 – Back to inspection and assembly to do a final check ontolerances your HEMI as it is assembled by an expert enginebuilder. Torque is applied every bolt. Piston to valve clearance isdouble checked. Cam timing and bearing clearances are veri-fied.Final dyno and tuning at the end of the install, your build is dynotuned on a Super Flow certified chassis dyno. Not your standardroll away dyno, this eddy current precision dyno has separateclimate controls and fire suppressant systems. When they tuneyour HEMI and your ride leaves their shop, you won’t just happyyou’ll be impressed!ShopHEMI is determined to make loyal customers not just onetime quick dollars. That is why they know their products andknow customer’s names, stories and faces. Not only are theycommitted to extreme horsepower builds for customers, theyare also Mopar enthusiasts!

The TMC point of contact for Arrington Performance/Shop Hemi.com is Daniels Performance Group, (DPG) Presi-dent and TMC member Charlie Daniels. Charlie told me that“The relationship between DPG and Arrington Performance/Shop Hemi.com continues to grow.” He continued by saying“Arrington Performance already leads the industry in the tech-nology and they use it to develop the best performance partsavailable,” By having DPG sell and install the performance partsthat are available from Shop Hemi.com, it creates an ideal situa-tion for local performance enthusiasts. This way the customercan purchase parts from DPG, they can install the parts andperformance gains can be measured in house on their Dyno JetChassis Dynomometer. In closing Charlie said “We are ex-tremely fortunate to have established this relationship as we con-tinue to look for opportunities to serve the casual performanceenthusiast as well as the hard core racer.”

Coronet Altered Wheel base, (AWB) AFX car thatran his quickest time ever, a 9.61sec. in the ¼ mile at142mph! Steve would also make two more awesomeexhibition runs on Sunday.

Sunday the weather was even more beautifulthan Saturday, mostly because there were even moreMopars there and the show field was 3 times larger! It always amazes me how every year we always geta different assortment of Mopars than the year be-fore. This year we were fortunate to have 8 awe-some Mopars from the Roanoke Valley Mopar Club thatmade the long journey out to attend our show. I was im-pressed with the way they set up camp with their banner andhung as group the whole day. Another big treat this year waswhen Bunny Burkett and her god son “Lil Bear” Pritchett, a

Virginia na-tive whobrought out2 (Top FuelA l c o h o l )HEMIp o w e r e dA v e n g e rb o d i e dFunny Carsthat would

pair up to make two sets of sub six secound runs, Bunny'sfastest run was 5.86 sec. in the ¼ mile at 240 plus mph!

Of course Mopar Madness would not be completewithout the support from some of TMC’s sponsors like HerbReynolds of Herb’s Parts who shows up every year to pro-vide members with a chance finish their rides with someneeded restoration parts. There was one of the 900 limitedproduction 2011 Mopar ‘11 Dodge Chargers there that wasprovided by Hall Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. It was broughtup on a flatbed and displayed under the big tent alongwith TMC member, Beverley Beverage’s 2010Mopar ‘10 Challenger where the awards ceremonywas held. TMC member and sponsor Charlie Danielsof Daniels Performance Group along with a few techsfrom our new TMC sponsor, Shop Hemi that werethere to answer questions on their new HEMI raceproducts available. They mainly were there to pro-vide support to TMC member Al Gennarelli and hisdriver Tiff Daniels as they dialed in his new Drag PakChallenger race car over weekend.

Overall it was an excellent weekend of rac-ing thanks to the weather and VMP General Man-ager Bryan Pierce, all his crew that kept the trackprepped along with all the employees from the track

who made the weekend go so smoothly. I want to thankeveryone who came out to show their cars in the show in-cluding the Richmond Pentastar Mopar Club and theRoanoke Valley Mopar Club. I especially want to thank allthe TMC members who volunteered to help with parking, judging, registration and merchandise sales tables. I wouldalso like to thank Steve Moths with his “Bad News” DodgeCoronet and Fran Olson's “Hurri-cain II” Plymouth Barra-cuda AFX car for coming out for the whole weekend. And abig TMC thank you goes out to Bunny Burkett along with“Lil Bear” Pritchett with their crews for coming out Sundayto burn up the track. TMC is very proud to have BunnyBurkett become a lifetime member of TMC and look for-ward to seeing her again at VMP for the next Mopar Mad-ness show!

Finally, throughout the show I was approached bymany TMC member and non-members with comments con-cerning the reversal of the car show and the “Mopar vs. theWorld” days with 99% of them being extremely positive. With that being said, I believe that we, the TMC Officersand Board of Directors will try to schedule next year’s showthe same way. See you next year.

("Members Ride" Continued from page 2)Virginia where Arrington Performance, also known asShop Hemi finished the final setup before Al was ableto take it to the track for Drag Pak's first pass downthe track.

Al made it very clear to me that there would beno race car without the great sponsorship he has beenable to acquire during the build of this ride. Sponsorslike Paramount Performance who provided the rearend, transmission and driveshaft and Arrington Engines, who built the engine for him, supplied the Kooksheaders and the computer system. He has gotten greatsupport from both Paramount Performance andArrington Engines and wanted me to make sure that Itell them “thank-you” for all that they have done for himthroughout the racing season.

Oh by the way, after all the money and workthat has gone into building the Drag Pak Challenger, Alis not the driver behind the wheel! Oh yeah he hastaken the Challenger down the track, but in racingweight matters. He wanted to have every advantagepossible, so he put a lighter (and prettier) driver behindthe wheel, Tiff Daniels! That’s right, TMC sponsor andclub member, Charlie Daniel’s daughter. Tiff Daniels isdoing very well handling the Mopar’s muscle and hasrecently brought the Challenger down the track for itsfirst official race at Mopar Madness. Tiff Daniels won

the unlimited class in .her secound event during TheModern Street Hemi Shootout at the Raceway in Atco,New Jersey with a time of 9.77sec. at 136 mph in the1/4 mile with a 1.28sec. 60ft! Al keeps the car atCharlie Daniel’s Racing in Smithfield, Virginia and getsa lot of support from Charlie. The club is glad to haveAl's new generation of Mopar performance to carry onthe future of racing.

The driver information center keeps you updated asto what gear you are in since the shifter does not but shouldyou get confused and try to shift “past” the Park or Sportshift modes, the information center nicely reminds you whatgear the transmission is in. Also, much like the slapstick shifterconsoles of the original muscle car era, the 2012 DodgeCharger with the 8-speed automatic transmission features ashift console with the small shifter surrounded in a flat car-bon fiber panel.

Under normal driving circumstances, such as accel-erating away from a stop sign like you would on the openroad up to a cruising speed of 55mph, the ZF-designedChrysler 8-speed is seamless in normal Drive mode and youcan barely tell when the transmission is shifting. Once youhave gotten to a smooth cruising speed of 55 to 70mph andthe transmission has gotten through the gears, the extremelylow RPM range allows for minimal amounts of fuel con-sumption on the open road. However, unlike some tradi-tional transmissions that use non-aggressive gear ratios tobolster fuel economy, the Chrysler 8-speed has plenty ofgearing to get the 2012 Charger with the 3.6L V6 from 0-60 in a hurry as well as allowing the Pentastar to do a prettyimpressive smokey burnout.

On the other hand, if you want manual control of the8-speed Chrysler transmission for some spirited driving fun(or more smokey burn-outs), you can pop theslapstick shifter into SportShift mode at which pointthe steering wheel mountedpaddle shifters take over. From there on, the driverhas full control of the upshifts and the transmission only down-shifts when necessary to prevent the engine RPMs from drop-ping too low. Under most driving conditions, your handsdon’t need to leave the 10 and 2 positions so the paddlesare in ideal areas for quick shifts during sporty driving situa-tions and when using the manual shift mode while exercisingall 292 horsepower, the shifts are much more positive likeyou would expect from a modern sports sedan.

Chrysler “broke the rules” once again with the in-troduction of an 8-speed automatic transmission to the pas-senger car segment but once consumers see and accept thisgreat system, we can expect other automakers operating inthe U.S. to start offering similar technology. However, withbeing the first to introduce the 8-speed automatic behind thePentastar V6 it is evident that Chrysler again is leading theway with more efficient technology only offered in the beau-tifully redesigned Dodge Charger and the Chrysler 300.

President's Corner

October MeetingThe October 2011 Tidewater Mopar Club (TMC)

club meeting was held at the Tidewater CommunityCollege Automotive Center (TCCAC), 600 InnovationDrive in Chesapeake, on Tuesday, October 11th and therewere 16 current club members and 1 new member, GregBrown present. This was a very light meeting due toeveryone recovering from a busy Mopar Madness week-end. We started by showing some pictures and talkingabout the open car show that TMC member CharlieDaniels held at his race shop in Smithville, VA on SaturdayOct 1st. I had hauled the club trailer out with Rick Hart inhis Hemi powered 1970 Road Runner following me tomeet up with some other club members. This was a goodchance to spread the word about our Mopar Madnessshow coming up the next weekend.

Next we spent most the rest of the meeting talkingabout everything that went on at the Mopar MadnessShow while looking at a bunch of various pictures of showand drag cars on the big screen while numerous commentswere made. Everyone agreed that it was one of the bestMopar Madness shows that we could remember in awhile. In fact everyone agreed that we should have“Mopars vs. the World” on Saturday and the judged carshow on Sunday again next year. The club was able toraise $250 between the Foodbank of Southeast Virginia,(FBSEVA) donation jar and the 50/50 raffle. Add in the$425 from Virginia Motorsports Park, (VMP) that theygave back to the club from the show car entry fees, givingus a total of $675. We also sold over $1500 worth of clubmerchandise during the 2 day event. The club then votedto add an additional $325 more to make our total dona-tion from the 25th Anniversary Mopar Madness Show tothe FBSEVA $1000! Add that to the $500 raised at the5th Annual TMC/Hall Dodge Summer Mopar Show andwe now have $1500 to donate at the FBSEVA MayflowerMarathon food drive coming in November! There were13 new members that joined the club at the show andTMC made Virginia native, Funny Car owner/driverBunny Burkett a TMC lifetime member!

I want to take this opportunity to thank theindividuals who helped make the TMC 25th AnniversaryMopar Madness Show a great success. First, I want toreally thank Jeri Centric who towed the club trailer up toVMP, worked the club registration tent all weekend, soldclub merchandise and keep everything organized so Iwasn’t too crazy while running around the event putting

out fires. I also want to thank C.E Gardner and his wifeAnnette who were the only ones there on Saturday to helpJeri. On Sunday, a big thank-you to the judges Rick Hart,Chris Maxwell, Chris Parker, Greg Brown, Jim Kidder,Rex Sigo and especially Bob Yates who thankfully took onthe job that Dick Collins has done the last 3 years ofentering the data into the computer to come up with thecar show winners. I definitely want to thank the followingpeople for helping with parking the cars and working theregistration table, Dave Potter, Steve Hanke, GerryRobousek and Charles Dickens. Last but not least aspecial thanks to Carl Swanson who also helped at thetent, but most importantly sold the 50/50 tickets and ofcourse our club photographer, Chris Yates. If you helpedand I forgot to mention your name, thank-you for every-thing you did to help make the show go smoothly, we allappreciated it!

The last thing we discussed was the up-comingFall Classic that is put on by the Virginia Peninsula CarClub Council, (VPCCC) at the Newport News Park.Several members were planning to attend the show andTMC Secretary, Kevin Beard informed me earlier that hewould assist in judging the Mopars, so we could pick thebest modern and best classic Mopars at the show.
