RETIRED Postmaster John Jones at his Te Awamutu home.
TC230415SP01
PRIVATE John Jones in 1942 —on a secret mission.
3During World War II,18-year-old Post Office workerJohn Jones was selected for amission so top secret he could noteven tell his parents where hewas.
It is now 73 years on, and fromhis Te Awamutu home Mr Joneslooks back on his war effort withpride.
After the war he resumed hisPost Office career, travellingmuch of the country as he rosethrough the ranks.
In 1977 he was appointed tothe Postmaster position in TeAwamutu.
He retired in 1980, and likedthe town so much, he stayed.
But back in 1942, when hedescribed himself as “a pimply-faced bespectacled kid, and onlyjust above the rank of telegraphboy”, he became one of 56 menselected for the top secret CapeExpedition.
The New Zealand Govern-ment thought it had good causeto fear an invasion from thesouth and established the CapeExpedition to ‘keep and eye onthe back door.’
There were two bases in theAuckland Islands Group and oneon Campbell Island and the menwere told to send out radiomessages if they saw enemyvessels using the excellent deep-water harbours at the islands.
After being accepted, MrJones had to swear not to talkabout the expedition to anyone —even his parents who were toldthat he was being sent overseas.
The force was assembled inhaste and great secrecy andmembers were hurriedlyattested into the Army asPrivates — so hurriedly that onthe day of departure he wasquestioned by Military Police forbeing in uniform without thecorrect papers.
Not being able to explain his
mission, it took a bit of good luckand fast talking by a superior toget him out of what could havebeen serious trouble.
Known as ‘coastwatchers’men worked in groups of five and
were given year long postings ateach of the sites.
Mr Jones did a year at theCape Expedition’s No 1 Camp atPort Ross in 1943, arriving at theisland aboard the 22m ketch
Ranui on New Year’s Day, andaccepted a second posting thatlasted about six months of 1945 toassist with station closures as hewar came to an end.
He was a radio operator, anddespite near zero previous train-ing in radios and petrol genera-tors, succeeded in his duties withwhat he describes as “high hopesand good luck on my side”.
Apart from taking his turn toman the lookout, Mr Jones’biggest task was to radio weatherreports back to New Zealandevery three hours.
“And in winter, I did most ofthe cooking,” he recalled.
Two friendly ships weresighted during his service at theAuckland Islands.

Ratepayer water usage uncoveredwaiting with baited breath
for the reaction from theratepayers concerning the‘deciding our future mailer’sent out a few weeks ago.
All the way through it istelling ratepayers they’rehaving water meters whetherthey like it or not.
I did a study of my own onwater usage and used Auck-land as an example. I usedWatercare statistics, thedemographic in Auckland isthe same (2.6-2.7 per house-hold).
It worked out to be 160m3
per year, per household in thewinter and 250m3 per year in
the summer.I don’t believe that Te
Awamutu and Cambridgepeople are using more waterthan people in Auckland, orany where else for that mat-ter.
The booklet states Cam-bridge, Te Awamutu andKihikihi are using 250 litresper person per day (PPPD)unmetered, against Ohaupoand Pirongia — 185-210 litrespppd metered.
I’ve worked 250 litres pppdout to be 237m3 per year, perhousehold. The Aucklandaverage is 200m3 per house-hold per year.
The excess usage has to befrom leaks and wastage, predominantly in the maininfrastructure (i.e. Tokanuileak 52,000m3 per reading ifits still leaking), wastage atthe various reservoirs as seenby residents, etc.
According to how I read it,it says that in order to beallowed to extract water fromthe Waikato River theRegional Council has stipu-lated to Waipa Council thatthey have to install watermeters to all houses.
This is only after Councilhave presented the theorythat all this water is being
wasted by the people.I did find a major leak in a
property not long ago, it was amassive leak over two years. Idiscovered it in about fiveminutes of looking at pres-sure problems at this house.
I would say about 45,000litres was lost over four days.
Council visited the housein question after complaints, but nothing was done. I don’tknow why, you don’t needwater meters to find leaks inprivate properties.
I found that booklet to bepatronising to the generalratepaying population.
TONY HEWITSON
We shouldn’t bemaking a profit
As a member of the Waipa Women’sHousing Trust I found that althoughtenants paid lower than market rent (andsometimes owed the Trust) there wasreasonable money left in the bank over andabove maintenance and running costs.
Market rent means a rate based on thevalue of the property, plus a profit for thefinancial investor above costs.
Although some volunteer work wasdone, most was by paid contractors.
All this makes me think that WDCshould stick to the lowest level of marketrent, repair the repairable and buildeconomically so that the raised value of theunits does not increase the market valuebeyond pensioner ability to pay and alsohave a comfortable lifestyle.
Surely we do not want to make a profitfrom renting to pensioners.
JUNE BRIGHT
People are most importantFirstly, I would like to
apologise if I did offendanyone from my previousletter, for that was not myintention.
There are two challengesto written text as opposed tovocal discussions.
The reader can’t alwaysdistinguish tone and thewriter can’t always explaineverything in 300 words.
There are many awe-some non-religious/non-Christian people helpingout in the world and ofcourse they are capable oflove in their hearts.
Many of my friends arenon-christian and Iwouldn’t judge them for asecond. You can’t put peoplein a box and say ‘all Chris-
tian’s are like this…’ and‘all non-Christians are likethat’.
I don’t like how religion/non-religion causes somuch division and hatredeither.
When people canachieve peace in theirhearts they can act humblyand loving towards anyone.
As James Parlanewrites, ‘It’s all about peoplehelping people’. That’sbeautiful.
Kind of like my favouriteMaori quote, ‘He aha te meanui o tea ao? He tangata! Hetangata! He tangata! —What is the most importantthing in the world? It ispeople! It is people! It ispeople!’
Legends, stories, parables and fables canteach many importantthings like values, morals, and how to respect the land.
Imagine if we turnedover the first page of the TeAwamutu Courier to find aninspiring written legend, parable, fable, or true storyevery week.
My first pick would beAesop’s fable — The Foxand the Lion. Acquaint-ance softens prejudices.
I’m sure the glass-is-halfempty folk will have some-thing to say about that andthe lengthy debate of God’sexistence will continueforevermore, but I have bet-ter things to do with my life.

Following the death ofGraham Turbott at 100 lastyear, John (Stuart) Jones isthe sole survivor of theExpedition.
On March 26, he was tohave voyaged to the Auck-land Islands with an expedi-tion to restore his old homein Ranui Cove, but Mr Joneswas told by doctors hewasn’t well enough to travel.
Instead his son BrianJones, of Tauranga, repre-sented his father, assistingwith building and takingpart in the Anzac Service atthe Ranui coastwatchers’base.
Mr Jones said it was
okay he couldn’t go.“I got to go back there
with a film crew in the mid-1990s and two weeks on theWellington might have beentough going.
“But I’ve long taken aninterest in the history ofthese islands, and so I’mdelighted the Coastwatchersare to be acknowledged,” hesays.
The service at RanuiCove took place on Sunday,March 29.
Inflatable rubber boats, manned by crew fromHMNZS Wellington, landedDepartment of Conservation(DoC) staff and dignitaries atthe old coastwatchers basein Ranui Cove.
The new arrivals joinedfive volunteer builders and a
DoC staff membercamped at thesite, makingabout 40participants forthe service.
DoC’s south-ern iwi liaisonman Dave Taylorrecited the Lord’sPrayer in Maoriand LieutenantCommander
Graham McLean, skipper ofthe Wellington, praised theSub-AntarcticCoastwatchers’ contributionduring World War II byacknowledging their com-mitment to the war effort.
Brian Jones had beenworking on the rebuildingand said he felt very hon-oured.
“Not everyone gets theopportunity to go downthere,” he said.
John Jones was alsoreunited with the 80-year-oldMV Ranui recently — the‘crayfisherman’ that wasinvolved with the expeditionthroughout the years.
She has been luxuriouslyrefurbished and is now ahire vessel in Auckland.
The Cape Expeditionwasn’t the only group ofcoastwatchers.
Confusingly, of the
hundreds of New Zealandmen who served ascoastwatchers during WorldWar II, the last twosurvivors are both namedJohn Jones.
John Mace Jones, 94, ofTakapuna, was sent to thenorthernmost extremity ofthe coastwatchers’ network, closer to advancing Japan-ese than any of hiscomrades.
Three days following thebombing of Pearl Harbourhe was taken prisoner onButaritari, in the GilbertIslands (now Kiribati) andspent the rest of the war as aPOW.

Sticking with the theme of the environmentfrom last week’s kupu Papatuanuku, this weekour kupu is manu (bird).
There are many Maori sayings that thatrefer to manu, or mention their characteristicsas a metaphor for particular people: a greatorator is referred to as a kaka waha nui (largemouthed kaka); someone who is unsettled canbe called a tou pırairaka (a fantail’s behind);another person with a sweet voice may becalled a korokoro tuı (throat of the tuı).
Here’s a few sentences using the manualongside some of the kupu we’ve looked atpreviously.• Heihei is not a native bird, but it’s still amanu.• I watched the manu have a kaukau in theawa.• Taihoa, whakarongo ki te manu (wait, listento the manu)
How many sayings do you know with manuin them? Or Maori place names that maycontain a type of manu in them?

Grants to reduce wasteEleven groups that
reduce, reuse or recyclehave received financialsupport from Waipa Dis-trict Council.
Council gets $40,000 ayear from the Ministryfor the Environment tosupport individuals, groups and businessesto develop projectsbased on minimisingwaste.
Grants are availableup to $10,000 with somediscretion to considerlarger projects.
Waste minimisationofficer Hope Williamssaid the council lookedfor projects that helpedthe community to focuson reducing how muchwas wasted each day.
At a meeting on
Tuesday, $37,899.46 wasallocated to a range ofgroups. The largestgrant of $9,040 went toWaste Education NZ tofacilitate workshops forcomposting and wormfarms within the Waipadistrict.
Money also went to:The Nappy Lady (to runworkshops on reusablenappies, $6,358); UnionParish (to collect ecolight bulbs that containmercury, $147.20);Maungatautari Ecologi-cal Island Trust (to pur-chase organic wastebins, $147.40); Environ-mental Education forResource Sustainability(to continue thePaper4trees programme,$1,657.86); Te Awamutu
Chamber of Commerce(to establish batteryrecycling boxes, providewaste audits, $5,850);Mighty River Domain (topurchase organic bins,$2,706); Waipa DistrictCouncil complianceteam (to test sludge andascertain if it is suitablefor vermicomposting,$3,263.76); Pare KoreMarae (to provideresource recovery at theTri-Maori Triathon,$1,980); Main StreamGreen (to present wasteminimization experi-ences at Waipa commun-ity events $2,200); SouthWaikato AchievementTrust (to support an elec-tronic waste collectionpoint in Te Awamutu,$4,550.00).
Council debt projected to dropWaipa District Coun-
cil’s latest financial fore-cast sees projected debtdrop by $11 million.
When the councilreleased its draft 10-YearPlan in March, Waipa’sdebt at the end of Junewas expected to bearound $24 million, basedon the September 2014forecast.
That forecast has nowbeen revised andindicates debt at the endof June will be closer to$13 million.
Chief financial officerKen Morris said the dropin projected debt wascaused by a number of
factors combined withtiming issues.
A higher-than-expected opening cashbalance has been boostedby $4.8 million due todelays to planned capitaland operating work, hesaid.
Timing issues aroundproposed projects like theTe Awamutu library andHicks Road treatmentplant upgrade, plus sav-ings in projects, haveresulted in $4.1 millionless being spent on capitalexpenditure.
The council isforecasting to receive $5.1million in development
contributions, $2.2 millionmore than expected. Inaddition, there has been ajump in revenue from feesand charges, largelydriven by the increase inbuilding consents issuedto new home builders.
“This all reflects thefact that Waipa is grow-ing, and growing rapidly.”
A number of savingswere also reflected in thelower forecast debt figure,Mr Morris said.
They included savingsin staff costs and operat-ing expenditure of morethan $500,000 plus nearly$800,000 saved in interestexpenses.

Pirongia’s contribution capturedPirongia Heritage and Informa-

An article in the Courier inFebruary told the story of GeorgeHerbert Lyford from Pirongia whowas killed at what is widelyreferred to as the Battle ofPasschendaele in October 1917.
He was specially rememberedwith a display of personal memor-abilia at the annual militaria showin Otorohanga in February.
That display was put together
by his great-niece Kath Arnold ofOtorohanga, who has kindlyloaned articles from it (including aframed photo of George Lyford andhis medals) for the Pirongia dis-play.
George’s younger brotherLeslie Lyford also served in WorldWar One - as a stretcher bearer inFrance - and was awarded a Mili-tary Medal for conspicuous brav-ery. There are details about this aspart of the Pirongia display.
There are also details of thesacrifices made by Pirongia’sMcConkey family to their country
- four of the five sons of WilliamHenry and Mary Ann McConkeywere lost (the McConkeys andLyfords were related) and of theson and three sons respectively ofRobert and Elizabeth Gibson andFrank and Marion Gibson lost.Cards that were sent to theMcConkey brothers are includedin the display.

The bride received the shockof a lifetime when her husband-to-be stunned her with the ultim-ate ‘flash mob’ wedding at aninner-city supermarket.
The wedding was completewith celebrity guests, a brassband, a procession of 200 danc-ing guests, Pacific Islanddrummers and a supermarketaisle which filled in as the wed-ding aisle.
The newly married MrsKasper (nee Chou) is originallyfrom Taiwan and was stilloverwhelmed after the ceremony, but "very happy" with her hus-band's intricately planned sur-prise wedding.
"I am the luckiest girl in theworld. I couldn't have asked foranything more," she said.
What started as an everydaygrocery store visit quickly turnedinto something altogether differ-ent.
She knew "something wasn'tright" when she was greeted by
Shortland Street star PuaMagasiva just after entering theshop.
Magasiva was with artist DickFrizzell and offered her somecheese from a mock promotionsstand before blowing a whistlewhich started the ‘flash mob’.
But it was not until her hus-band popped up, that she knewshe was getting married.
She was soon walking downthe aisle, with musician TikiTaane there to play his hit AlwaysOn My Mind as she made her waypast laundry products.
The surprise wedding cameafter she proposed six monthsearlier, telling her future husbandit was on the condition that hearranged the wedding.
Mr Kasper, who runs a busi-ness licensing Frizzell's artwork, says he had "about 60 sleeplessnights" before the big day and ittook a lot of organising, includingasking favours from celebrityfriends.

A multi-sensory wartime exhi-bition is helping Te AwamutuPrimary pupils understand moreabout Gallipoli.
Teachers Linda Woulfe andTracey Hopewell have turned aclassroom into a battlefield com-plete with trenches and a bunker.
Visitors to the exhibitionbegin with their guides by hear-ing the last post and viewingposters (for the RSA competition)and wartime memorabilia.
They then watch a slideshowof WWI photos and hear wartimemusic before entering thedarkened trenches where lights, sounds and dry ice simulate war-fare around them.
In the bunker a stretcher and a
variety of basic items soldiersmight use can be seen by flicker-ing ‘candlelight’.
The journey ends with a nineminute video explainingGallipoli, providing an idea ofwhat happened and why it is stillimportant to New Zealanders 100years later.
Mrs Woulfe says they wantedto do something special for thecentenary and felt this kind ofexperience would have moreimpact for the children.
“So we put out a plea for arange of items and many of thechildren brought wartime mem-orabilia from home to help stagethe exhibition.
“We also had great supportfrom local businesses MackqueeHire and Secondhand World.”
Mrs Hopewell says the chil-dren that have been through theexhibition have learned morethan they would by just reading abook or listening to a teacherspeaking.
“It’s been a great hook forlearning — it has engaged themand motivated them to find outmore about Gallipoli and AnzacDay.
“Many have discovered mem-bers of their family, or a friend’sfamily, that served during WorldWar I.”
The exhibition has been sowell received that it will be openon Anzac Day (12 noon - 2pm).
It will remain up until the endof next week for other schoolfamilies or members of the publicthat would like to view it.

Sports struggle in wet encounterBy JUSTIN MIEZENBEEK
TC230415SP12A
FLANKER Fetu Sasalu makes a break for Sports in gloomy conditions at AlbertPark on Saturday.
Hamilton Old Boys played a perfectbrand of wet weather rugby at AlbertPark on Saturday, running away in aconditions-defying high scoring game37-14 in Waikato Premier Rugby.
Driving rain fell all day, and ifanything only get heavier as the gamewore on, making any kind of expansiveplay near impossible.
Both teams tried valiantly to producesome sort of spectacle, but handlingerrors rendered their attempts futile.
Hamilton Old Boys wasted no timesignalling their intentions, kicking forthe corners and attacking the host’s setpiece.
An early pushover to No.8 RupeniTamani got the visitors going earlybefore Sports midfielder Falelima Siineipounced on an Old Boys error. He toedthe ball through and scored by the posts, with the try duly converted by first five-eighth Nathan George.
More scrummaging woes put Sportsfurther in the hole as a tight head wasscooped up by Tamani, who crashedover the line extend their lead to 12-7.
Sports were finding themselves shutout of the game. Their set piece wasstruggling to hold and they had onlyscraps of messy ball to work with.
They needed something beforehalftime to stay in touch and they got itwith a free kick from a scrum, picked upby Valentino Mapapalangi who crashedthrough the goal line defence to score.George nailed the kick from wide outand Sports incredibly had the lead at thebreak.
The second half, however, wouldprove to be all Old Boys. As the raincame down harder, they played thegame closer.
A third pushover try for Tamani gotOld Boys back into the lead before thereal killer blow was struck. A scrum 15metres out resulted in Tamani’s thirdpushover try, fourth of the game, ashowing of dominance that broke the
back of the hosts. With the score now at 26-14, Sports
were falling behind and needed to forcethe issue to come back, and in torrentialrain it only succeeded in increasing analready high error rate.
Old Boys added two penalties tostretch the lead before ending the gamewith a breakout try to Anthony Coffee, further adding to Te Awamutu’s mis-ery.
Sports struggled to hang with thedominant Old Boys’ pack in the setpiece, but performed well in loose play.
Flankers Fetu Sasalu and MatthewTowers (playing in his 50th game for theclub) worked tirelessly in the horren-dous conditions, while pivot NathanGeorge, in his 30th (blazer game) playedwell under enormous pressure.
Fullback Jared Bayliss was again putto work, playing clean up as Old Boysplugged the corners. He handled thepressure superbly and his positionalplay was outstanding.
This weekend has Sports away toUniversity, desperately needing a winto stay in touch with the top four.

The tale behind this Saturday’s 20km trek by 100 horses and riders to honour their Anzac war dead has galvanised rural communities around Waikari, north Canterbury, even after the worst drought for 60 years. On Anzac Day, a spectacular remembrance called ‘100 Years, 100 Horses’, assisted by a Fonterra Grass Roots Fund donation, will see 100 riders in formation – many of them dressed in replica gear from World War I. They will pay tribute, not just to the fallen, but to the community spirit behind the Canterbury Mounted Rifles.Fonterra’s Grass Roots Fund
was touched by the story of the Rifles, part of the New Zealand Mounted Rifle Brigade which left Lyttelton in 1914 for the conflict in Turkey with just under 2000 men and over 2000 horses. The north Canterbury townships of the Hurunui district – Waikari, Hurunui, Mason Flats, Peaks and Hawarden – provided 187 of the riders, 42 of whom did not return.Neither did the horses. Those that survived the war faced being left behind and probably death by starvation in a hostile and unforgiving environment. The Kiwi horses had earned a reputation for sheer durability; riders formed a bond with them
every bit as emotionally strong as man and dog. Unable to take their horses home and loath to leave them to a slow death, the soldiers entered a dreadful pact – mates would shoot their mates’ horses. The soldiers, all adept with rifles and horses because of their rural upbringing, were supposed to have been away at war for only a few months. Instead, they were away for years, fighting at Gallipoli, in desert campaigns in Sinai and Palestine before serving as part of an occupying force in Gallipoli and then Egypt where they helped put down nationalist riots. They returned to
New Zealand in 1919, after that harrowing parting with their horses. That is the sort of detail uncovered as part of the ‘100 Years, 100 Horses’ event planned for the area on Anzac Day —and it has unearthed a community spirit which Hurunui District Council Deputy Mayor and Organising Committee chairperson Marie Black says has helped bring the region together even during the hardships of the drought.“It had been three or four months since we had any significant rain down here,” she says. “I was
talking to a farmer the other day who reckons it’s the worst it’s been for 60 years. It’s tough
and a lot of people were feeling the effects.
“But families have also discovered a whole multitude of stories around the men and the families involved. It’s been great to watch; people have been able to do some research and there has been a whole range of stories spring up involving people in the region who were part of it.”To read more go to BrandInsight on www.nzherald.co.nz
