Built in 1943, Pine Garden was formerly used as the Japanese military control center due to its vantage point overlooking the mouth of Meilun River, Hualien Port, and the Pacific Ocean while still camouflages well in the forest. After World War II, the Taiwan government resumed control of the building and made it a leisure center for American Military Assistance Advisory Groups. It was then passed on to the Department of Veteran Affairs. In 2011, the Council for Cultural Affairs reopened it as a tourist attraction and it has become one of the top 100 historic sites in Taiwan.

The East Coast of Taiwan is the perfect place for whale -watching as the Black Current and the coastal rivers meet in the waters off the East Coast of Taiwan, bringing all sorts of migratory fishes that are great foods for whales and dolphins. The best time for whale-watching in Taiwan is between April and November when the waves are calmer. The tour takes about 2~3 hours, sometimes slightly longer or shorter depending on the weather condition.

Talking about the water sports in the East Rift Valley, "River Rafting" is the most famous and exciting one. During the summer season, which is the peak season of rafting, many brightly colored rafts can be seen descending, one-by-one on the 24-kilometer section of river from the Rueisuei Bridge to the Changhong Bridge, making a gorgeous sight. Over 20 hard-to-cross torrents and rapids provide a thrilling, exciting, and unforgettable tourist experience. The Xiuguluan River passes through canyon scenery, which, with its wonderful rocks, makes a lasting and memorable impression on the tourists.

Taroko National Park is one of eight national parks in Taiwan and was named after the Taroko Gorge, the landmark gorge of the park. Taroko, means "magnificent and beautiful" in the Truku language of the Truku indigenous tribe. Taroko Gorge and its surrounding area are well known for their abundant supply of marble.
