offices/embassies, and even the British Army (yes, we did!). We have also trained teachers of Arabic (language and teaching methodology) for the Ministry of Education in Brunei. About 20% of our work focuses on putting together 'Study Abroad Programmes’ for universities such as Odense, Oslo, Uppsala, Exeter, Edinburgh, Chosun, etc. If you would like to talk to them for feedback, please let us know and we will give you contact details.
Certificates and recognition: ILI issues detailed course certificates with clearly defined course objectives and assessment information. Our course levels match the Common European Framework. The above listed universities accept our assessment as part of their students' grading, and several American universities are giving credits for courses that their students attend at ILI. We are a private language institute. Although we are affiliated to International House, this does not give our courses an immediately recognizable "status". However, to date we have been successful in negotiating recognition when required. Grants and scholarships: ILI offers 10 scholarships to undergraduates each year. Additionally,
many students have been successful in obtaining grants from their university, or through government funds. We can provide documentation in support of applications. Books and materials: ILI has a comprehensive range of student textbooks, CDs, and
workbooks. These books and materials have been developed in-house over the years, as most commercially produced course materials are either impractical or un-workable. As our staff is composed of 'International House' teachers, they readily understand the needs of the language learner - hence our development of courses and materials never ends, and our books and materials really help our students 'listen, speak, read and write'. A series of Egyptian Colloquial books has been published by the American University Press (details see page 2). Accommodation, airport meeting, apartments: A full service is available and an agents' outline
is attached.
Brochures, posters, printed student information in files, power point presentations, and website are all available, and will be sent to agents annually in October, or on demand.
Arabic Courses: There are 4 standard types of courses. For special courses please contact us directly. Class sizes average between 8 - 10 students. The maximum is 16. The courses are:
Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (spoken). ECA Modern Standard Arabic (reading and writing). MSA Combined ECA and MSA
ECA courses are offered 10 hours per week. MSA courses are offered 15 hours per week. Combined courses are offered 25 hours per week. Full educational details of standard courses can be found below, or on our website. Agents should note, however, that we are flexible, and have had considerable experience in putting together special courses and even 'language and tourism' courses as well as Media Arabic.

Why study Arabic in Egypt? There is no better way to study a language than amongst
those who speak it every day. Nowhere else in the Middle East will you find such warm and friendly people delighted by your efforts to communicate in their language.
We have attracted large numbers of students from all walks of life wishing to develop their cultural as well as linguistic understanding by studying in Egypt. We have students from all over the world; Europe, Australia, USA, Japan, and the Far East, and have provided them with flexible courses that meet their individual needs.
Why study Arabic at International Language Institute? The Arabic Language
Institute at ILI in El Sahafeyeen, Cairo, was established in 1975 and was the first language institute in the region to focus on the teaching of Arabic. As part of the International House London worldwide organization of language institutes, we only provide teaching of the highest recognized standard by qualified native speakers. Small classes enable us to maintain a friendly relaxed atmosphere. We have built on our professional reputation and provide courses regularly to students from worldwide universities, embassies, research and development centers (Royal Dutch Institute, KIT), diplomatic corporations (United Nations and the Ministry of Education Brunei) and charitable organizations like V.S.O.

This is the written language of Arabic. It is developed from Classical Arabic which is the language
of the Holy Quran. MSA is the language of newspapers and the media. It is a 'living' language,
drawn up by educated people and intellectuals. The objective of our MSA courses is to enable
you to read and write at an appropriate academic level, and to enable you to follow current day-
to-day events in the Middle East and North Africa. Our MSA courses also serve as an introduction
to the enormous wealth of Arabic literature.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
We have structured our MSA courses from level 1 (Beginners) to level 10 (Advanced) and by the end of each level you should be able to:
Pre-MSA:
Using a variety of classroom activities, this course will enable you to build up the basic skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as developing language acquisition skills. Grammar is not presented explicitly at this stage.
Beginners MSA: This level aims to enhance the understanding and production, both written and spoken, of different patterns of nominal sentences, present and future tenses of verbs conjugated with single pronouns, negation of nominal and verbal sentences and useful basic vocabulary.
Early Elementary MSA: This course expands on the teaching points of the previous level in teaching tenses with plural nouns. The level also deals with all essential morphological rules related to verb conjunction, such as weak roots and the ten forms of Arabic verbs as well as sentence structures. All grammar and morphology presentations are contextualized in relevant situations which expand the basic lexicon.
Elementary MSA: This level prepares the participant with essential newspaper expressions and vocabulary. This level expands on the morphological aspects of vocabulary. "Masdars", active and passive voice, reported statements, conjunctions and complex sentences. This will enable students to understand and use them in meaningful contexts.
Early Intermediate MSA:
This level details sentence formation, compound and complex sentences and related syntax, i.e. connectors, clauses and accusatives. It expands more on morphology as active and passive participles.
Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)

This level also enforces oral and written skills through a variety of classroom activities. Upper Intermediate MSA: This level exposes the student to a wide range of topics which cover a variety of areas such as Politics, Economics & History. It focuses in expanding grammar such as different uses of "Masdars", using different verb types and conditionals.
Post Intermediate MSA:
This level is aiming at fluency in reading and enables the participant to cope with short texts of different styles by using a wide range of topics. Grammar points are generated from the text. The student consolidates and expands on all grammar and morphological rules taught in previous levels. Advanced levels MSA:
In these levels, students are exposed to a variety of texts which enrich their knowledge of sophisticated vocabulary. The levels also widen the scope of the students’ understanding of different written styles; i.e. the informative, argumentative, philosophical, scientific and literary styles which are used at different times by different writers. These authentic texts enable students to have a deeper analytical view of Arabic grammar and syntax problems.
