PIECE FOR ANALYSIS

My INITIAL RESPONSE

• Damien Hirst’s Sculpture’s are very captivating and eye opening. What I thought about this piece is that it represents fear and that it should be faced sooner or later. This Shark could be scary to some people but to other’s it may not. I see it as an awareness to conquer your fear’s.

CONTEXT: ARTIST BIODAMIEN HIRST

• He is 50 in 2016, and still active.

Lives in London, Gloucesteshire where is constantly inspired to create his unique art .

Art movements: • Hirst’s interest for art sparked in the Goldsmith

University in London.• Began to develop the “unacceptable idea of

death”() when he was a teenager in 1991 The experiences influenced him to create artwork that “ served to establish the difficulties he perceived in reconciling the idea of death in life”()

• Hirst’s career began to expand in contemporary art 1991 where he introduced his piece “The Physical Impossibility of death in the mind of someone living”(w) where he was nominated for the Turner Prize.

Context 2 – Influences and Movements

• Artistic Influences – Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol and Francis Bacon. Contemporary art, representational and realism.

• Art Movements – “He was a leading figure in the young British Artist’s movement in the 1980’s and 1990’s.”()

Theme #1 Theme: Cycle of Life

Concept - I see a clear connection to the cycle of life because of most hirst’s work is themed towards death.• By Isolating the shark from it’s natural habitat, with

the formaldehyde providing an illusion of life, the work explores our greatest fears, and the difficulty involved in trying to express them. As hirst states: “You try and avoid [death], but its such a big thing you can’t. That’s a frightening thing isn't it .” (Hirst)

• “ I deal with death in art, not in life. If you really think about death, it makes you inactive” (TG)

Hirst - Content

• Hirst’s intended message with this piece is to “force the viewer out of their element by By isolating the shark from its natural habitat, providing an illusion of life, the work explores our greatest fears, and the difficulty involved adequately trying to express them.” ()

• I see how Hirst show’s how death is inevitable to the viewer. He creates representational art forms that make a bold statement of the cycle of life.

I choose Damien Hirst because all of his artwork is very eye opening and bold. The piece that I analyzed fits the theme and content for the reason that most of hirst’s work induce the idea of death and how inescapable it can be. The content also fit’s into his typical art work that Hirst creates in the way that some of it relates to the cycle of life where we are Born, we live and we die.
