الندوة الدولية حول اللغة العربية وآدابها: نظرة معاصرة

Arabic ranks sixth in the world’s league table of languages, with an estimated 186 million native speakers across 22 countries. As the language of the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam, it is also widely used throughout the Muslim world. Arabic is the only surviving member of the Ancient North Arabian dialect group attested in pre-Islamic Arabic inscriptions dating back to the 4th century.

Language sciences have achieved great successes in both theoretical and applied spheres. They have merged with the human, natural, medical, and technical sciences to create new linguistic and literary disciplines. Arising from this, the Department of Arabic, University of Kerala has chosen to conduct an international seminar entitled “Arabic Language and Literature: A Contemporary View” to examine contemporary vision of the sciences of Arabic language and literature and how the Arabic language has benefited from it. The topic has much importance while the Arab world had beset by social upheavals and political divisiveness and the language is being fully revived in the image of classical Arabic throughout the Arab speaking countries.

The Department of Arabic hopes that this conference will successfully highlight the contemporary vision of Arabic language sciences outlined by Arab scholars as well as its literature through their contemporary perusal of Arabic sciences in the fields of linguistics, literature and criticism.
