Lab 6 : Network with router + wireless "Linksys router"

Fig 1.1

Router connects to the private network through its Fast Ethernet port and connects to the public

network (to another router) through Serial port

By default Cisco routers doesn't have serial ports. Therefore we need to add a serial port to router.

Click the Router--> select Physical tab-->select WIC-IT for single port or WIC-2T for

multiple ports -->switch off the Router-->add the Serial port to the router (drag and drop

the serial port that is displayed in the right bottom corner to the space given) -->switch on

the Router.

Now to connect Routers you have to use a DCE (Data Communications Equipment) cables

Configure the IP's "IP addressing and subnetting " 192.168.1.0/24

Since its a class C, and if it was divided into 8 subnets, the mask will be 255.255.255.224 or /27;

To discover the maximum subnets do the math, 2^3 = 8, so we'll borrow 3 bits from the host.

The ranges are:

1 192.168.1.0 192.168.1.31

First host 192.168.1.1 >>255.255.255.224

2 192.168.1.32 192.168.1.63

First host 192.168.1.33 >>255.255.255.224

3 192.168.1.64 192.168.1.95

First host 192.168.1.65 >>255.255.255.224

4 192.168.1.96 192.168.1.127

First host 192.168.1.97 >>255.255.255.224

5 192.168.1.128 192.168.1.159

First host 192.168.1.129 >>255.255.255.224

6 192.168.1.160 192.168.1.191

First host 192.168.1.161 >>255.255.255.224

7 192.168.1.192 192.168.1.223

First host 192.168.1.193 >>255.255.255.224

8 192.168.1.224 192.168.1.255

First host 192.168.1.225 >>255.255.255.224

Note that you only use the first available host from each subnet "router gateways" and the

new subnet mask ,see fig 1.1 shows how the IP's were distributed on each port.

Now all the PC's can ping to their gateway (their router), but the PC's cannot ping to any

other router or other PC's the replies will be "destination host unreachable"

For that reason you need to configure the routing tables on each router so the routers will

exchange table information between each other.

For each working port you need to

change the clock rate to 64000

0.0.0.0 Means

any network

comes or any

mask in the

router

For the wireless "Linksys router" ,in the internet settings change the connection type to

static

And for the LAN settings change the ip and subnet mask.

Now Click the laptop or pc --> select Physical tab--> switch off the device-->remove the

current module --> add Linksys-WPC300N module to the device (drag and drop the

Linksys-WPC300N module that is displayed in the right bottom corner to the space

given) -->switch on the device

Now you can ping any device from any network except from inside the wireless network

you can ping any device but not vise versa because of the firewall on the wireless router,

other than that everything is pingable.

Note that some packets will be lost but if you do it again it will reply and ping across the

network.
