A Year of Extraordinary Generosity – the Launch of our 2021 Annual AppealDear Cardinal Mooney family,
Despite a global pandemic, it has been a year of extraordinary generosity.
From financial contributions to contributions of time and talent, our Cardinal Mooney community has stepped up and leaned in to meet Mooney’s greatest needs.
It is with great pride that I share with you some of Cardinal Mooney’s recent accomplishments and invite you to join me in investing in our future successes.
Cardinal Mooney is fortunate to have staff, teachers and volunteers that work tirelessly every day to make our school the very best place to be for our students and families. In keeping with Mooney’s best traditions, giving sustains teaching and learning, student life, the campus and operations. We are fortunate to have nearly 1000 generous donors help make last year one of our top five giving years on record. Because of you, we achieved the following:
•WegaveoutmorefinancialaidassistancedirectlyimpactingfamilieswhosufferedCovidlosses,includingmanyfirst-generationstudents.

•…andduringaglobalpandemic,wewelcomedover100first-timedonors!
These gifts support core priorities. Together, Mooney’s community of dedicated donors help build a Catholic school of greater strength and breadth.
Looking ahead, we see an even stronger, more sustainable Mooney – a school where any child who wants to be a part of our family, will have the opportunity to be.
Sometimes I am asked - why have an annual appeal? The answer is clear: it’s an investment in tomorrow’s leaders, it makes Mooney affordable and accessible, and it supports other expenses critical to providing an exceptional Catholic education to deserving and talented students.
As our annual appeal launches, you’ll have several opportunities to respond to our invitation to give. And as an important member of our family, I hope you will consider making a gift to Cardinal Mooney’s 2021 Annual Appeal at a level that’s meaningful to you.
In closing, our students and I are grateful for each of you. You make it possible for others to be a part of this incredibly special school.

Generations of Mooney: A Season of Homecoming
AN INVITATION TO IMMERSE YOURSELF AGAIN IN THE LONG RED AND GOLD LINE.
4
Over the next few months, we will be inviting you to rekindle your relationship with the Cardinal Mooney family, by inviting you to participate in a series of “homecoming” events and inside-the-mission opportunities. As family, we know you appreciate how deep-dyed the Cardinal Mooney experience is, and how it lasts forever.
We seek to share with you the growth and innovative improvements being made at Cardinal Mooney – the “why” our students choose to become part of our longstanding legacy.
We will also be sharing with you the type of financial investment our entire school community commits to when we educate a student. We can agree, the benefits of a Mooney education are clear – for individuals, families, and the community. However, the price of attending Mooney is a barrier to many prospective students. That is why donors have given generously for decades, providing much needed scholarships and tuition assistance to Mooney students: to close the very real gap between what families pay and the cost of educating a student.
With an eye towards closing the gap and providing an education rooted in excellence and tradition to everystudentwhoseeksone, we will be making our Mooney community more aware of the opportunities that exist to “pay forward” the long red and gold line for someone else. These opportunities include time, talent, andtreasure. Yes, a financial gift to Cardinal Mooney ensures more students reach new heights of academic, spiritual, and athletic achievement, but so does your time and talent.
Together, the Cardinal Mooney family will continue educating and inspiring future leaders of our community and beyond. This is our promise to you. This is legacy.
StaytunedformoredetailsaboutourGenerations of Mooney: A Season of Homecoming annualappealandevents!
ADDING TO TRADITION: EXCITING NEW CHAPTERS AHEAD OF US!
As fall comes to a close, Cardinal Mooney athletics are realizing all sorts of possibilities and reaping the benefits of improvements made last spring.
That’s when – thanks to hundreds of hours of labor and the generosity of alumni, friends, and students – we put finishing touches on the restoration of The Armory. We now have a state-of-the-art training facility for ALL young women and men at Cardinal Mooney. Five sports are currently using the facility, including golf, soccer, basketball, football, and volleyball. We expect this number to grow as coaches see the positive effects of strength, flexibility, and speed training.
We recently hired a new women’s basketball coach, Dom Diorio, and are excited to see how the program grows under his leadership. We are also in the process of hiring a new women’s soccer coach and look forward to introducing that person to the community.
We cannot wait to see what men’s soccer head coach Matt Britton has in store for the playoff season. Last year, he guided us all the way to the state championship game. This year, we’ve seen great play from his returning players and promising newcomers. On the women’s soccer side, an inexperienced team started slowly but has shown great improvement of late. We wish both teams success as they head into district play.
Our volleyball program is on the rise, our cross-country team has had its best season in recent memory, and our women’s tennis team had a solid year. Next year promises to bring even more accolades to our school.
This school year, we moved our football games to the fantastic facilities at Mineral Ridge High School. This convenient location has allowed us to provide a traditional high-school football experience for our young players and fans. Each game has been an event. We have honored former teams, coaches, and players as part of our halftime shows. We look forward to the future as we use these contests to honor the great teams of the past and to get them involved with our school.
Finally, our men’s basketball team has begun practicing, looking to repeat last year’s district title. Coach Palermo has a young but exciting group of players, so get out and support both our men’s and women’s teams this season.
I hope to see you all throughout the school year! Thank you for your unparalleled support as we add new traditions to our legacy.
STUDENT ATHLETE PROFILE
What sports do you play for Cardinal Mooney? I’m the captain of the women’s soccer team and the extra point kicker for the football team.
Why do you like being a kicker?I get to do something different. It’s unique because few women are kickers or even play football. My team members are nice, and I’ve had no issues. I just have a slightly different routine for getting dressed and ready for games.
What other activities are you involved in at Mooney?I’m a member of the Ski Club, Spanish Club, and Ambassador‘s Club. I love theatre and hope to be a part of this years’ school productions.

SAMUEL RONSHAK, WOODSHOP What is the primary focus of the class? To offer a project-based learning environment through which students will develop higher-order thinking skills through the completion of projects using the art media of wood construction.
What kinds of projects do students work on? The most popular seem to be corn hole boards, Adirondack chairs, and park benches but my favorites are the projects that students help design and put THEIR hearts and efforts into creating.
Why is it important to teach woodshop today? There is high demand for skilled workers everywhere. This class and others like it give students insights and skills that will be valuable throughout their lives.
How did you get into woodshop? I started out by taking woodshop in middle school and high school, and later became an engineer. I also gained experience as a homeowner remodeling my house and many others. This is my 18th year in the Cardinal Mooney family!
How has woodshop influenced your students? Many have gone into related trades and many others have gone into something indirectly related, like engineering, electrical, firefighting, horticulture etc. This class and others like it are essential to creating well-rounded individuals who are prepared to meet the needs of society.
I’m grateful to the parents for trusting me with their children’s education and to the Lord above for the opportunity to share my gifts with them.
Inaugural class of Mooney Merit ScholarsThe Mooney Merit Scholars program was made possible by an anonymous gift from a Mooney alumnus.
Scholarship recipients were selected from a competitive pool of applicants who sat for the High School Placement Test and who successfully completed the interview process. The renewable merit scholarships value is $18,000 over four years.
The inaugural class includes the following students and their grade schools:Garrett Bogan, St. Nick’s; Vince Frost, St. Charles; Aidan Hryb, Holy Family; Jibril Jackson, Austintown Middle; Michael Jaye Pompoco, Canfield Village Middle; Hailey Poulton, Canfield Village Middle; Spencer Pruitt, Heartland Christian; Samantha Rotunno, Holy Family; Aidan Stamp, Holy Family; and Roselyn Wade, Valley Christian.

Letter from FR. MATT HUMERICKHOUSE

Hello friends!I could not begin to tell you how excited I am about being the new chaplain! When Bishop Bonnar began talking with me about this
early in the summer, I was on board right away. I was talking to someone recently about how it was not that long ago that I was in high school, but somehow the world around us has grown tremendously more complicated than it was fifteen years ago when I graduated.
I feel like one of my main goals is to be a bridge between the Church and the students. They all have so many questions and concerns as we all try to navigate the difficult landscape of modern society, and I am happy to jump into the breach and help out how I can.
If anyone sees me at a Mooney sporting event or out in public, feel free to say hello!

Why I GiveVINCE PECCHIA ’15
I count the people I grew up with – and continue to grow with – among the greatest blessings of my life.
I don’t know anyone that comes together in difficult times or celebrates happy occasions the way we do. I will never forget how the school rallied around my sister Maria when she was diagnosed with cancer. I’ll never forget renting garage fridges when my grandma died due to all the meals and drinks everyone donated.
The past few years have been turbulent for Mooney, through administration changes and the pandemic. But the school continues to give people so much to be thankful for. There are challenges ahead as parents are having less children, moving out of the area, or maybe not prioritizing Catholic education as much as they used to. We’ll need to come together to navigate those difficulties, especially the younger generations. Soon enough we’ll have the responsibility of carrying it forward and ensuring Mooney is here for future generations.
I donate to show thanks for the “family” that I’m not sure you can experience anywhere else. While it will be some time before I can contribute a large sum to the school, I give a little every month to show my support. I’m rooting for Mr. Maj and the rest of the faculty and staff as they continue to make the school such a special place.
THANK YOUTHANK YOU
