Tina?

A young chefThis is Tina Howden.

She’s only thirteen, but she’s very good at cooking. She’s taking part in a cooking competition called ‘Young Chef of the Year’. There are about 4,000 young British people in the competition. The competition is happening in twenty cities in Britain at the same time. The winners from each city will go to London next month for the final of the competition. The prize is a weekend in London – not to sightsee, but to cook in the kitchens of one of the best restaurants in London!

All the competitors must cook a three-course meal in two hours. They can only spend £20 on all the ingredients. Tina is preparing chicken at the moment. ‘I really like cooking,’ she says. ‘I started cooking when I was five. I always help my mum in the kitchen and I cook dinner at home three times a week.

We’ve got a vegetable garden at home. I like picking peas and carrots and cooking them immediately. They taste delicious! We’ve also got three hens, so we get fresh eggs every day. I love making cakes with the eggs. I want to win the ‘Young Chef of the Year’ competition because I want to be a famous chef when I grow up!’

1 It’s for children and teenagers. It happens every

year in my town in the summer.

They do it in the town square

and everybody comes out to watch. They each have to

cook a dish. They have one hour to finish cooking their

dish. The judges taste the dishes and decide which is the

best. There are three judges.

The winner gets £1,000 and

goes on a cookery course in a

famous restaurant. There’s also

a second prize, which is £500.

Last year, a twelve-year-old boy

won it. I think it’s a great way to

get kids interested in cooking.

2 She lives in Cadiz. It’s a city in the south of Spain. We met on a language exchange website. She writes to me in Spanish and I write to her in English. I love cooking, so she writes about Spanish food. I ate it when I was on holiday in Madrid with my parents. Last week, she sent me a picture of a Spanish omelette. It has eggs, potatoes and onions in it. It looked delicious. Her mother made it. Her mother also makes paella. That’s another Spanish dish. It’s got rice, fish and chicken in it. It’s my favourite Spanish food. I write to her about British food. Her favourite is fish and chips. She had it when she was in London three years ago.

3 It was my grandma’s 80th birthday. It was a surprise. We put decorations up in our house. I invited more than 50 people. All the family were there and lots of her friends. We all cooked something for the party. I made chicken with potatoes. My sister made shepherd’s pie. It’s a traditional British dish made with potatoes and meat. It’s one of my grandma’s favourites. My mum made a big cake with strawberries and cream and we wrote “Happy Birthday, Nana” on it. We put eight candles on the cake for her to blow out. She was so happy she started to cry. It was such an amazing day.

The year is 1914. The place is

France. It’s Christmas Eve. In this

film, for one day the soldiers on

both sides put down their weapons.

Instead, they’re playing a football

match. They’re making friends and

getting to know one another. They

know that they can get into trouble

for doing this but the soldiers carry

on. Then, at midnight, the games

stop and the soldiers must go back

to their places and pick up their

weapons.

The year is 2154. There aren’t any trees or animals on the earth. There are only people. Life is very difficult. The rich people live on a space station above the earth. They live in beautiful houses and have got everything they want. There isn’t any food on earth. The people there are hungry and want to go to the space station. Life is good on the space station. One man is going to try to bring everybody from earth to the space station. Will he save the people on earth?

The third movie in this series will make you laugh a lot. The four friends are on their journey back home to New York City. They’re lost in Europe and they’re searching for some penguins. They have lots of adventures along the way. They even join a circus! But when they finally get back home, will they be happy or will they want to stay with the circus?

Monday 6th MarchWe’re planning a new ICT project at school. We’re going to grow vegetables in the school garden and sell them. And we’re going to use our computers to help.

Wednesday 8th MarchOn the computers, we worked out which vegetables were best to plant, like tomatoes and cucumbers. Then we used the computers to control the watering of the plants in the greenhouses.

Wednesday 22nd MarchThe plants are starting to grow!

Monday 13th MayWe’re going to sell the vegetables inside our local supermarket. We’re going to have a greengrocer’s shop! The supermarket is going to help us for one day next week. We’re going to use the computers to write adverts for the vegetable sale.

THE BIG DAY!Our shop was fantastic! We sold everything today! We made £220! The supermarket was great. They said we were good shop assistants. We’re tired but happy! Now, what are we going to spend the money on? Something for the school, of course!

Hi, Alex!

I’m really sorry but I can’t come to your party tomorrow night. I’ve got a throat infection. It started on Monday and now I’ve got a temperature. I’m in bed today. I feel terrible, but I’m very bored. The doctor gave me some antibiotics. They make me feel quite sleepy and they taste horrible! My mum made me some soup and she also gave me lots of fruit to eat. The last time I felt this bad was when I had that really bad toothache last year. My sister, Beth, is also sick; she’s got stomach ache. We share a room, and she’s lying on her bed right now holding her stomach! Our cat, Molly, is sitting on the bed looking at Beth. My dog, Snowy, is also with us. It’s watching me write my email. My brother, David, has gone to school. He isn’t sick. He’s got a football match today. Is your karate competition on Friday? Good luck! You’re really good at it. I’ve got hockey practice tomorrow afternoon but I can’t go. I love hockey! Anyway, I just want to say have a great time at the party!

The Famous FiveThe Famous Five is a series of popular mystery and adventure stories for children. The stories are about a group of four children and a dog. In the group are two brothers, Julian and Dick, their younger sister, Anne, and their cousin Georgina. Julian is the oldest. He’s also the biggest and the strongest, and he’s sometimes quite bossy. Georgina doesn’t want to be a girl, so she cuts her hair short and changes her name to George. George’s dog, Timmy, is the fifth member of the group and plays an important part in their adventures.

The first story was called Five on a Treasure Island. In the story, Julian, Dick and Anne went to stay with their cousin George in the school holidays. George lived with her parents in the seaside village of Kirrin. George’s mother owned a small island in the sea called Kirrin Island. The first mystery happened here. When the children were sailing to the island, they saw a shipwreck in the sea near the island. So they decided to explore!

Enid Blyton wrote this first story in 1942. She wanted to write six or eight books about the group of children. But the books were so popular that she wrote a story about the Famous Five every year for the next twenty years!

4 The mystery happened on Kirrin Island. 5 The children found an old boat under

the water. 6 Enid Blyton wrote eight stories about the

There’s a broken window. There’s a sofa and two

armchairs. There’s a beautiful painting on the wall;

it’s of a ship sailing during a storm. My mother bought

it many years ago in Paris. There’s a mirror above the

fireplace. On the fireplace there’s a vase. It’s beautiful.

In front of the sofa, there’s a coffee table. There’s a big

rug under the coffee table. We bought that rug on our

trip to Turkey. There’s a dirty footprint on the rug. It

looks like a man’s shoe.

It was amazing. We were swimming in the sea when we saw it. We were on holiday in Croatia. It was hot and sunny and we decided to go for a swim. I went first then Alice joined me. The water was lovely and cool. I swam out quite far from the beach and Alice followed. Then I felt something touch my leg. I thought it was a plant, but when I looked into the water I saw it. Alice saw it too and screamed. It looked like a girl. She was very beautiful. She had long black hair. She smiled at me and then she swam away. That’s when I saw that she didn’t have legs. She had the tail of a fish.

It’s about a boy that was stranded in a boat with

a tiger. His father owned a zoo, and the family

were travelling by ship with all the animals to

Canada. Then there was a terrible storm and the

ship sank. The boy got into a lifeboat. It’s about

his journey across the ocean on that boat with a

tiger. They stopped at a mysterious island. The

island was full of little animals and plants, but it

was very dangerous. The boy discovered it had

a dark secret. I finished reading it last night.

There’s also a film, and I want to see it now!
