Monday, April 12, 6:30-8:00 PM—for “Vaccines, Variants and the Road Ahead.”

That’s the focus of an upcoming webinar on Zoom, sponsored by the Eastern PA Conference Global Ministries Team. The team includes members of the Confer-ence’s former Health & Healing Council.

Two doctors of pharmacy (from St. John’s University in New York) will share what they know and can advise about the three new vaccines now in use to fight COVID-19. Dr. Elsen Jacob is an Assistant Professor at St. Johns University with a clinical residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Her sister Dr. Susan Jacob is a Clinical Pharmacist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Both are board certified in pharmacotherapy, geriatric pharmacy and patient safety; and both are earning additional Master’s degrees from ivy-league medical schools. Learn more about their education and specialties.*

& Johnson vaccines and related concerns. They will discuss the similarities and differences among the three vaccines and other related topics, including:

When should children be eligible to receive them?

What do we know and what can we do about the variants now spreading in the U.S?

What is the effectiveness of the vaccines in fighting the variants?

What should we expect in 2021 and 2022 in our fight to end the pandemic?

What should the church know and prepare for in the months ahead, including how to safely regather for worship and events?

Part of our Eastern PA Conference extended family, Susan and Elsen are daughters of the Rev. Dr. Christo-pher and Christy Jacob Kurien, along with their sister Ann Jacob, an Eastern PA Conference delegate to Gen-eral Conference.

“The Global Ministries Team is pleased to provide this program as a resource to enable churches to partici-pate in health ministry with their neighbors,” said Deaconess Barbara Drake, Global Ministries chairperson and missions secretary. “We are advocating for an understanding of the importance of vaccines for the protec-tion of the health of our entire communities.”

Cultivating kindness

An Easter prayer

Tying together the Testaments

From the grave’s depths, Lord Jesus Christ, you emerged, break-ing the hold of sin, death and hell, that those who trust in you might share in your righteousness, life and beloved community with God the Father and all God's children. We bow in awe before your maj-esty, giving thanks for your grace

Kind hearts are the gardens.

Kind thoughts are the roots.

Kind words are the flowers.

Kind deeds are the fruits.

Take care of your garden

and keep out the weeds.

Fill it with sunshine,

kind words and kind deeds.

—Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

In most non-English-speaking nations, the holy day of Easter is known by a word derived from the Hebrew word for Passo-ver: Pesach. In Greek, it’s Pasch; in Latin, Pascha; in Span-ish, Pascua; and in French, Paques.

Each spring, Jewish people ob-serve the Passover festival to

commemorate how God de-livered them from slavery in Egypt. The Christian ob-servance of the Lord’s Supper (the Eucharist, Holy Com-munion or the Lord’s Table) originated with Jesus sharing the Passover Seder meal with his disciples the night Judas betrayed him. Jesus connect-ed the exodus story with his

own mission: becoming a “Paschal Lamb” to save his people from the slavery of sin and its consequences.

Decades ago, as English ac-tress Gertrude Lawrence wait-ed behind the curtain for a play to begin, the queen up-staged her by arriving at the royal box to much applause. “What an entrance,” Law-rence remarked, to which her friend, playwright Noel Cow-ard, replied, “What a part!”

Jesus certainly made a grand entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, entering to adoring shouts of “Hosanna!” But worldly glory and fame weren’t his intent. Instead,

More churches lately have been resurrecting (pardon the pun!) the early-church tradition of celebrating the second Sunday of Easter as Holy Humor Sunday, affirming the season’s joy. Need some jokes for April 11? Try these:

Easter is the only time when it’s perfectly safe to put all your eggs in one

might crack up!

An irate subscriber called the newspaper, demanding to know where her Sunday edition was. “Ma’am,” said the employee, “today is Saturday. The Sunday paper isn’t delivered until Sun-day.” After a brief pause, the caller spoke with a ray of recog-nition: “So that’s why no one was in church today.”

our Lord knew that his Fa-ther had prepared a sacrifi-cial role for him. Jesus han-dled the adulation with dig-nity and poise. The humble yet courageous Son of God knew that danger, des-pair and death awaited — but that he must endure it all to fulfill proph-ecy for humanity’s sake. The pageantry of Palm Sunday is a stark contrast

to the role of Suffering Serv-ant that Jesus faced a few short days later. Yet each event during Holy Week rep-resents victory — for Jesus

as well as for his be-loved children.

Palm Sunday is a glorious day, so let us wave palms and shout, “Hosanna in the highest heav-en!” The Savior has

come. What an entrance! What a part!

This Holy Mystery: A UM Study of Holy Communion A study on Zoom offered by the Board of Ordained Ministry The Eastern PA Conference Board of Ordained Ministry offers a new study of Holy Communion led by the Revs. Candy LaBar and Gary Knerr, in two sessions on Zoom:

Saturday, April 24, 9:00-11:30 AM

Saturday, May 8, 9:00-11:30 AM John Wesley called the Lord’s Supper the means of grace par excellence. Do pastors believe the same as Fa-ther John? Do our congregants? How important is communion to our relationship with Christ & our Chris-tian spirituality in general? Is Christ really present in the consecrated elements? Or is the Lord’s Supper a meal that merely recalls Jesus’ sacrifice? Is it truly a gospel feast or a dessert after the “meat & potatoes” of the sermon? This This Holy Mystery: A UM Study of Holy Communion, via Zoom, is designed to help all church leaders — and in particular, our licensed local pastors and lay-supply pastors — to wrestle with this theological foun-dation of Holy Communion. To participate, individuals should read Gayle Carlton Felton’s This Holy Mystery (available at cokesbury.com), including Wesley’s sermon, On the Duty of Constant Communion (in the workbook). Al-so, share any questions with the study leaders via email. (Real-world questions — as in: What do I say when a person from my church says… ? — are most welcome!) The registration deadline is Tuesday April 6. Class sessions will take place on two Saturdays, April 24 and May 8, 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM via Zoom. (Zoom links will be sent upon registration.) 0.5 CEUs will be offered to those who complete this course. You must participate in BOTH classes as they will not be rec-orded. LILY—The lily that blooms around Easter is a sym-bol of Christ’s resurrection because it rises from a seem-ingly lifeless bulb decaying in the ground. It is also used as a symbol of Christ him-self. The lily, a symbol of purity, is often used to repre-sent the Virgin Mary.

ANCIENT WORDS OF WORSHIP You may know more ancient Hebrew than you realize. In fact, you’ve probably used the language in worship. A number of words form Hebrew (and the closely related Arama-ic) have become part of Christian church ser-vices through the centuries. Hallelujah means “Praise the Lord!” Look closely, and you’ll see the short form of God’s name, jah (short for Jahweh or Y ahweh), at-tached to the Hebrew word for praise. Hasanna is often heard in Palm Sunday ser-vices, since it was shouted during Jesus’ Tri-umphal Entry into Jerusalem. Originally meaning “save us,” it was the sort of welcome you’d give to a victorious general riding in to a free your city form oppressors. Amen is Hebrew for “surely,” “so be it,” or just plain “yes!” It has long been uttered at the end of prayers, but Jesus often used it at the beginning of key teachings. “Truly, truly, I say to you….” Maranatha was an Aramaic word meaning “Our Lord, come!” The Apostle Paul ex-claimed this as he anticipated Christ’s return to earth (1 Corinthians 16:22).

People in the Bible MARY MAGDALENE; A.D. 1 century;

Matthew 27:56 As Jesus and his disciples traveled from town to town, a group of exceptional women followed and financially supported them wherever they went. Mary Magdalene was among these women. Indebted to Jesus, who had liberated her from demon possession, Mary followed him and gave money to his ministry. Unswerving in her devotion, Mary was at the cross, where she observed Jesus endure this cruel method of Roman execution Watching opposite the tomb where Jesus’ body was taken, she also witnessed his burial by Joseph of Arimathea. She saw the Romans roll an enor-mous stone in front of the tomb, closing off and sealing Jesus’ burial place. After leaving the tomb, she main-tained a vigil through the Sabbath until the dawn of the next day and then returned to the tomb with anointing spices. Atop the stone that had been rolled away from the en-trance of the tomb sat a luminous angel-a truly frighten-ing sight for the Roman guards and for Mary. John’s Gospel says Mary saw to=wo other angels inside the tomb who asked her why she was crying. Mary then turned to see a man she thought was the gardener. She asked him to tell her where he might have carried Jesus’ body. But when the man spoke her name, Mary recog-nized his voice-it was Jesus. For further study, see Matthew 27:56-61; 28:1; Mark 15:40-47; 16:1-9; Luke 8:2; 24:10; John 19:25; 20:1-18.

We know the name of only one of the two disci-ples to whom the risen Jesus appeared on the road to Emmaus. Who was he? A. John B. Paul of Tarsus C. Joseph of Arimathea D. Cleopas Answer: on page 12
