It is said that we live in a Society going through a kind of differentiation. We wish to express again our known view that people must have options intheir life , must have outlets to creative and productive activities to makethem feel happy. What better than being able to work on a topic , on a workthat you love. When you love something you create , you produce amagnificence. When you work on a job that you do not love , you arelingering. There are topics such as music, history, philotelism, scouting ,volunteering, mountaineering , athletism and many other interestingoccupations that parents – firstly- and schools – secondly - should switch theinterest of the junior people towards those topics by watching themtactfully. From our side, we choosed to provide the last 25 years as muchknowledge as we could to junior people but also to anyone interested onEarth Sciences , through ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS and GeMinExhibition as well as through various related events. We did it as we hadforseen that the Collection and study on Minerals, Gemstones and Fossils hasmany scientific and professional extensions , i.e. there is ground forprofessional business. All lead to Natural Resources and Environment , topicsthat touch the whole Planet Earth. Our main “weapons” during all these yearswere and are : Consistency and Hard work. We thank God that entitled us tooffer something useful in the Society the last 25 years. Recently we accepteda recognition on our efforts by Piraeus Bank and thanks to our cooperationwith this Organization a beautiful Calendar 2009 “DEDICATION TO THEMINERAL WEALTH” came into publication. We are ready to respond andcooperate on any serious proposal on Natural Resources and the Environment. We will keep working with the same enthusiasm on these topics in such a waythat knowledge become accessible to anyone interested.Happy and Peaceful New Year 2009 to all of you !

3 41 The Editor of ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS addressing the lecture on Natural Resources andEnvironment to the audience (2 and 3). Various material related to Natural Resources (mainly minerals ,gemstones and fossils) were on display in this event (4).

NATURAL RESOURCES and ENVIRONMENTFollowing an initiative of The Athens Soroptimist Foundation “IDRYTIKOS” and in cooperation withORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS , an excellent event took place early in December at AMALIAHotel in Athens with main speaker the Editor of ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS. We respondedwith great pleasure to this invitation as Soroptimist International , Soroptimistic Society of Greece , TheAthens Soroptimist Foundation “IDRYTIKOS” and ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS are verysensitive on this topic and work to spread and share knowledge everywhere. The Event was dedicated to “Natural Resources and the Environment” , an important topic whichinfluences all Planet Earth. The Editor had the chance to show photographs and released information onthe gradual deterioration of the environment in various parts of the world , restoration in small scalemines –in some cases- and a movie on the itinerary the water follows from the mountains until arrives inour houses as the deterioration of Nature in various levels affects the most valuable “ingredients” inlife : The air we breath and the water we drink. One important thing is that from time to time leaders ofmost Countries get together to discuss the situation on the impact caused in the Earth from exploitingthe Natural Resources in an no rational way, the influence on climate and try to take decisions tobecome more active to reverse the situation. We feel they miss one point : that things run faster thanbureaucracy and people are always behind the march of the events. It is very difficult now to reversethings but people should concentrate their efforts at least to be able to eliminate the cause of effects.Taking into consideration that population on Earth is increasing and the gap regarding way of life fromCountry to Country and from Continent to Continent the conclusion is that to move faster and solve theproblems is a complicate problem to solve. People are obliged to continue efforts , must change attitudein the way they live and be optimistic as hope dies last !

stanbul , Turkeyhttp://www.piagems.com

Gemstones are graded by the their color, but in the case of this rare mineral, Diaspore, it is next toimpossible. Depending on the light condition, it will mysteriously change its color. You will witnessthe transformation of colors from a bright kiwi-green in daylight to a dark green in dim-light, andwill be also surprised to see your precious stone turn in to pink under an evening light. You willfeel the priceless beauty of Diaspore. Diaspore will live through the day with you, silently andpassionately dancing with colors. Diaspore originated from a Greek word “to scatter”, referring to the mineral's easy disintegrationin the blowpipe flame. It represents the reunification of families scatter all around the world.Diaspore is the Stone for those people who live away from their homeland. There is the museum ofDiaspore in Tel Aviv University which indicates the distribution. Individuals, who wear a glimmeringDiaspore, will make friends in no time. Color-changing Diaspore, a rare kind, comes from Turkey inlimited quantities. Due to its unique quality, Diaspore colors are unenhanced. They cannot beimproved by light. Over 5 ct is very precious. Cutting Diaspore in to a gem demands excellence. Itrequires quality workmanship and precise cutting according to cleavage and twinning. . Diaspore isnew to the World jewelry market, but it will take its prestigious place in no time.COLOR CHANGING DIASPOREDiaspore is a native aluminum oxide hydroxide AlO(OH)Hardness : 6,5-7 in Mohs scaleThe Specific gravity is 3,4Name Origin : From the Greek world “to scatter”Crystal System : OrthorhombicColor Kiwi green, green, khaki, pinkMolecular weight : 59,99g Diaspore is a mineral of bauxite (aluminum) ore, an alteration product of aluminum rich rocks (likecorundum) and is found in granular limestone and other crystalline rocks. There are three mainforms of bauxite; Gibbsite [Al (OH)3], Böehmite [AlO (OH)], and Diaspore [AlO (OH)]. Diasporedevelops at higher temperatures compare to other two for rapid dehydration and has higher density(3.4 g/cc). GeMin , Your Mineral ,Gem , Jewellery and Fossil Exhibition in Southeastern Europe.www.gemin.eu

- Most of major European Mineral, Gem and Fossil shows take place in Western Europe . GeMin show inAthens ,Hellas , is the unique event of its kind which covers the Mineral, Gem , Jewellery and Fossil activities ,Industry and Earth Sciences and fills the gap in Southeastern Europe. ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ONMINERALS is widely known that sponsors the GeMin show since 1987 , but our publication has and willcontinue to support within its possibilities any effort on Earth Sciences and especially on Minerals, Gems andFossils. We always believe that this is the only way to enhance the Sciences of Mineralogy , Paleontology in theform of hobby as well as enhance the Gem Industry. It is the least acknowledgement to all those people wholook for minerals ,gems and fossils in the remote areas of the Earth and bring them in front of Collectors atvarious Shows. It is the least acknowledgement to all those suppliers of Gem Rough and superb Mineral andFossil Specimens from around the World. One of the most striking features of Athens GeMin show is its substantial sales potential as Hellas is one ofmajor tourist destinations in the World and apart from collectors in Hellas ,thousands of collectors come astourists and buy minerals, gems and fossils. Companies have realized this and so there is an inflow of materialevery year in the Market here.- GeMin show is the most comfortable show in Europe as the organizing Committee takes care for thecomfortness both the Exhibitors and the visitors. A great deal of superb specimens ,gems and fossils areexpected to be on display during 23rd GeMin 2009 to be held in Athens on 27-28-29 November 2009and we invite all to be present in this big event in Athens either as Exhibitors or as Visitors.-Another parameter which is seriously taken into consideration by the Organizing Committee of GeMin is thejunior section : The future are the pupils ,the students and in general the younger generation of collectors ,soschools are urged and invited to visit GeMin ,so young people have the chance to come across with mineralspecimens, gems and fossils but also with educational products on Earth Sciences.

: 27-28-29 2009 23rd GeMin 2009 , , .

Do not forget : 27-28-29 November 2009 is the 23rd GeMin 2009 International Mineral,Gemstone ,Jewellery and Fossil Exhibition in Athens.

One of the best Mineral , Gemstone , Jewellery and Fossil Exhibitions inSoutheastern Europe. Be there !

100 %.As can be seen in the above photographs , the energy pillow is separated in 16 chambers ,each one ofwhich contains quartz tumbled crystals . The cloth is 100% cotton.-

.Mineralogy in cooperation with Textile Industry has created pillows and blankets with tourmaline.

What makes tourmaline products good for health ? When tourmaline is “in motion” ,i.e. when undergoespressure or change in temperature due to its piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties , it releases negativeions which are considered as the vitamin of the air. The topic is extensive and there are many UsersTestimonials on improvement of their health while they used tourmaline products.Testimonial on the piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties of tourmaline is the following example : Whenyou look at the display of mineral specimens in a rock shop , you will notice that tourmaline crystals havemore dust covering its crystal .This is explicable because variation in temperature within 24 hours a day ,results in development of pyroelectricity in tourmaline crystals and hence attract the dust particles of the air,as dust particles are electrically charged particles.Ions are molecules that have gained or lost an electrical charge. . They are created in nature as airmolecules break apart due to sunlight, radiation, and moving air and water.Negative ions are odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certainenvironments. Think mountains, waterfalls, and beaches. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions arebelieved to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping toalleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy.

ourmaline sheets or tourmaline pillows helps to improve blood circulation when seated for long hours ,e.g. Bank Employees , Personnel working many hours with P/C , Drivers etc

- Smaragdite , a fibrous green amphibole mineral or a green foliated kind ofamphibole set in sterling silver jewellery.

We receive quite a few enquiries from our readers to provide some information on the mineralsmaragdite .The reason is that here in the market there are mineral specimens for sale assmaragdite (also on sale under the name argyradamas).Fluorite (the “argyradamas” of the Ancient Greeks , occur in Lavrion in fine purple and greenwell formed crystals. The green color of fluorite crystals gave rise to the name smaragdite forthose green fluorite crystals on sale mistakenly named as smaragdite , but fluorite ( orargyradamas of the Ancient Greeks) is not smaragdite. On the other hand smaragdite is a fibrous green amphibole mineral or a green foliated kind ofamphibole , , occurring in rocks such as eclogite and some varieties of gabbro. It has thechemical formula Ca2(Mg,Fe 2+)5 Si8 O22 (OH)2 and it is so called from its emerald-green colour. The specimens in photographs A and B are from China.
