Their 2-month old daughter, Jada, was choking and coughing and having one of her “breathing episodes,” as the Neids called it. That morning, after a feeding, Jada began screaming harder and turning bluish gray. Jessica thought she was choking, turned her over and banged on her back a few times. She then used a suction ball on her throat. Things settled down, but at a doc- tor’s visit later in the morning, Jada went into another of her “breathing spells.” When checked, Jada’s oxygen level was about 80 percent. Ninety to 100 percent is normal. “That was a one-way ticket in the back of an ambulance, down to Chil- dren’s (Hospital in Minneapolis),” Jessica said. “And let me tell you, that was quite a ride!” Cory, meanwhile, was at Oak Leaf Park during Glencoe Days with the couple’s two sons, Caden and Connor. He was told to get to Children’s Hos- pital as soon as he could. “They didn’t know what was wrong,” Jessica said of the Children’s Hospital doctors. They thought her lung had collapsed, that she was hav- ing heart problems. Jada was born April 22 at 3 pounds, 11 ounces and had major respiratory issues, including an underdeveloped right lung and issues that would not allow her to keep food down. Nearly a year later, with a feeding tube in her stomach, Jada is a mere 13 pounds and has spent 125 days of her life in hospitals. But on June 22, doctors did not know what was causing her “breath- ing episodes.” “She (Jada) was in shock by this time,” Cory said when he got to Chil- dren’s Hospital. “They told us we couldn’t leave,” Jessica added, and that the doctors were not sure she was going to make it. The extensive flood waters poured into their basement, neighbors’ base- ments and the basement-floor class- rooms at First Lutheran School across the street. “We called family and asked them to help,” Jessica said. By Josh Randt Sports Editor When he was born in April of 1997 in Glencoe, Ricardo Martinez Jr. was immediately resuscitated and air-lifted to Children’s Hospital in Min- neapolis where doctors per- formed surgery to close an opening on his back, better known as spina bifida. With spina bifida, verte- brae that normally enclose the spinal cord remain open, and sometimes allow a por- tion of the spinal cord to stick through the opening. A sac filled with spinal fluid may also surround the cord. After completing the sur- gery, doctors told Maria and Ricardo Martinez Sr. that their son probably wouldn’t make it past 12 months, and if he did there wouldn’t be much life in the infant. “They said he would only be able to move his eyes, and that he wouldn’t walk or talk, or anything,” Maria recalled. “They actually told us to pull him off life support.” Now, at 16 years old, Ri- cardo Jr. not only made it past 12 months, but speaks both Spanish and English, and always seems to have a smile on his face when he passes by on his electric- wheel chair. A student at Glencoe-Sil- ver Lake High School, Ricar- do Jr. has the hobbies and preferences of plenty of 16- year-olds. “I like to watch TV and play video games,” Ricardo Jr. said of his free time activi- ties. His favorite class is woodshop, where he made a nightstand for Maria, and is currently working on a cut- ting board for her. Maria and Ricardo Sr. had no idea there was anything wrong with their second child until he was born dead with a lump on his back and lifted to Children’s. “It was scary,” said Maria. “Right when he came out he was already dead.” “The umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck and everything,” Ricardo Sr. said. “Then I saw that bump on his back, and said ‘What’s that!?’” It wasn’t until the couple reached Children’s that they were informed of Ricardo Jr.’s condition. “They told us that one in every 2,000 people born have (spina bifida),” Maria said. “So we won the lottery!” Ricardo Sr. playfully inter- jected as his family laughed. “It was really frustrating having the doctors telling me to disconnect him,” said Maria. “But with my faith in the Lord, here he is.” It hasn’t been an easy jour- ney for the Martinez family, who also have a 20-year-old daughter named Joanna. Since his birth, Ricardo Jr. has had in the range of 22-26 surgeries, including a feeding tube and a tracheostomy just one month after he was born that he still uses today. He’s also been bound to a wheel- chair his whole life, and re- lies on his family members for bathing, eating and other cares. He was also kept on a ven- tilator day and night at first. The family had to be trained on how to use the ventilator and how to administer CPR, “or else we couldn’t bring him home,” Ricardo Sr. said. In 2008, Ricardo Jr. devel- oped severe scoliosis and had a spinal fusion to join his ver- tebrae. At that time a shunt was also placed to help drain the cerebrospinal fluid. The most serious surgery was in 2010, when one of Ri- cardo Jr.’s intestines kinked, leading to a major infection over the holiday season that nearly claimed his life. “We took him in the night before Thanksgiving, and he never returned home until Jan. 15,” Maria said. “Every- thing was infected. It wasn’t good.” “We thought we were going to lose him,” Ricardo Sr. said. Since the 2010-11 infec- tion, Ricardo Jr. has not had any major complications. Though, he does have regu- lar checkups on his spine and shunt. “From January to March he’s had six doctor’s appoint- ments,” Maria said. “He’s pretty used to the routine,” Joanna added. “So he doesn’t get too stressed out.” Josh Randt Martinez family Turn to page 2B Jada Neid Turn to page 2B Randt Turn to page 2B

At 16 years old, Taylor Ten-hoff has already undergone twobone marrow transplants, one ofthe most evasive and painful op-erations executed for terminallyill patients.

In the fourth grade, Taylor wasdiagnosed with Severe AplasticAnemia, a disease in which thebone marrow is damaged, caus-ing deficiency in red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

Taylor’s parents, Russ andMonica, said they noticed some-thing was wrong when Taylorwasn’t “being himself.”

“He was so tired all the time. We’d go for a walk and he’dhave to sit down to rest. Inschool, he was laying down inthe hallway from being so tired. We’d get calls from theschool...They just thought he wasbeing naughty,” Monica said.

“And we noticed he was bruis-ing easily. He had bruises allover,” Russ said.

“At first we thought his broth-er was fighting with him, and weyelled at him to cut it out,” Moni-ca said.

A friend of the Tenhoffs, whois a nurse, checked over Taylorand told the Tenhoffs to take himin and to get blood tests.

“When we took him in, thedoctor didn’t believe us. She

thought he just had a virus andwas going to send us home. When I kept pushing to get theblood work done, she told me in-surance wasn’t going to cover it.She said, ‘He doesn’t need thesetests.’ I told her, ‘Then I’ll pay forit!’ Finally, we got the tests doneand within an hour, the doctorcame back...She was crying andsaid Taylor needed to go to Chil-dren’s Hospital immediately. Shesaid do you want to go by ambu-lance or helicopter?” Monicasaid.

“At that point, I was trying notto cry. I didn’t know how bad itwas or how bad it was going tobe. And I was trying to keepstrong for Taylor,” Monica said.

The Tenhoffs then rushed Tay-lor to Children’s, where he had abone marrow biopsy and wasfound to have Severe AplasticAnemia.

Taylor was then sent to theUniversity of Minnesota fortreatment, which includes a stemcell transplant from a well-matched donor, who happened tobe one of Taylor’s older sisters,Katie.

“Taylor has six siblings:Stephanie, Heidi, Becky, Roxie,Katie and Tucker. So the doctorswere happy to hear that becauseit gave him better chances for amatch. Katie was the only full-match sibling,” Monica said.

Russ said Taylor’s first trans-plant was extremely painful forhim, and took about three hours.

“It usually takes 20 minutes, but Katie’s bone marrow was sothick, so the nurses had to slowlysqueeze the bag into his arm. Butyou couldn’t squeeze too much,or the needle would pop out ofhis arm. But I remember it wasso painful for him. He had reallyhigh blood pressure and he wasjust screaming,” Russ said.

But after the transplant, Taylorset a record and left the hospitalon the 17th day after the opera-tion.

“Doctors said to expect up to100 days in the hospital,” Moni-ca added.

But the Tenhoffs had to remainnear the University Hospital for100 days, in the event “anythingcould happen,” Russ said.

Then in the seventh grade,Taylor started experiencing fa-miliar symptoms again: weak-ness, lethargy, bruising.

“He was getting nosebleedsand petechiae, which are smallred or purple spots on the body.Basically, he was bleedingthrough his skin,” Monica said.

She said petechiae was causedby low platelets in the blood, which help with clotting.

In October 2010, doctorsfound that Taylor’s platelets weredangerously low at 11,000, and

should be between 150,000 and450,000.

After more testing, they foundthe bone marrow was failing.“They tried to revive his bonemarrow with the frozen stemcells from his sister, but it didn’twork,” Monica said.

Monica said Taylor underwent58 platelet transfusions and 30regular blood transfusions beforeundergoing a second bone mar-

row transplant. Now 16, Taylor is “doing

well,” but is dealing with adultdiabetic issues and thyroid issuesas a result of the transplants.

“For transplants, patients un-dergo a year’s worth ofchemotheraphy in one week, tokill all the bad bone marrow.Chemo itself is really aggresive, and it really takes a toll on yourother organs,” Monica said.

A tough 6 years for Taylor

Obviously, accidents canhappen on courses that don’thave any extra people. I’vegiven you a couple of exam-ples.

But playing through play-ground and picnic areas wasflat out dangerous when peoplewere around. Even if you’reconfident in your throws, youwere oftentimes met with icyglares from parents watchingover their young ones, or cars,as you tee off.

These aren’t frisbees thatyou bring to the beach. They’reheavier, made of stronger ma-terials, and designed to fly a lotfarther than the frisbees thatcome to mind for most people.

These discs are moving at ahigh velocity, sometimes justfeet above the ground. So mov-ing and improving the course— which is scheduled to fea-ture a 600 foot hole — is some-thing I think everyone shouldbe excited about.

For more information on thecourse, check out the “Hori-zon” supplement included withThe Chronicle this week.

When Molly Koschinska, 1,was born May 17, 2012, her par-ents, Tim and Shannon, neverexpected they’d be spending 10days in the neonatal intensivecare unit (NICU) at Children’sHospital.

“She was a healthy, beautifullittle girl. Everything checked outfine with her that first day, butwhen the doctors and nurses re-examined her the second day, they found a slight heart murmur, but said it was common in new-borns,” Shannon said.

“But on Saturday morning, wewere excited to leave and gohome. During her discharge rex-amination, doctors said the mur-mur had gotten worse and need-ed to check into it further. Nextthing I know, they were callingan ambulance to transport her toChildren’s,” Shannon added.

She said they found Molly hada complete atrioventricular (AV)canal defect, which meant shehad a large hole in the center ofher heart.

“And two valves, the tricuspidand mitral valves that normallyseparate the heart’s upper andlower chambers were not formedas individual valves, so she hadsurgery that September to repairthe hole in her heart,” Shannonsaid.

In April 2013, Molly had an-other surgery to try to repair themitral valve.

“Which was unsuccessful. Themitral valve does 80 percent ofthe work of the heart, pumpingblood. Because of this, it can’t bereplaced with a cow or pig heartvalve. It had to be an artificialvalve,” Shannon said.

She said Molly had three sur-geries since birth, and will beneeding more to continue to re-place the artificial mitral valve.

“As she grows, it will need tobe replaced. We are hoping thiscurrent valve will last until she isfive or six years old, and thenthat valve will hopefully last untilmiddle school. It will have to bereplaced again when she’s inhigh school, but hopefully bythat time, science and technologywill have advanced enough so

that she doesn’t need continuousvalve replacements,” Shannonsaid.

The biggest obstacle with theartifical valve is that Molly needsto take Coumadin, or Warfarin.

“It’s a blood thinner, and thetricky part is monitoring her INR(international normalized ratio)levels. These are measures of co-agulation.

“The hard part is that she’s alittle toddler, who can bump herhead or fall over. The biggest fearis that she will bump her head, which can cause bleeding in thebrain. But we want to be able tokeep her active, and on trackwith developmental growth of atypical kid,” Shannon said.

Molly’s diet is also importantin maintaining her heart health.“Diet plays a part on those INRlevels, so we have to make sure

she eats broccoli and lots of leafygreen vegetables with VitaminK,” Shannon said.

“We’ve been really lucky. Herhealth has been steady and she’scooperative when we have toprick her finger for the bloodtests,” she added.

The Koschinskas also havetwo more children, Luke, 6, andKate, 4.

“They are troopers. It’s beenhard the last couple of years. Es-pecially that first year. Mollyconsumed everything from me.We were in and out of doctorsoffices regularly, but Tim and Iboth have family and friendsaround, who have helped us outwith everything.

“They have been really instru-mental in getting us through lastyear,” Shannon said.

Molly Koschinska, daughter of Tim and ShannonKoschinska of Waconia, was born with a large hole inher heart. She has had three heart surgeries sincebirth, and is one of 12 recipients for this year’s TimOrth Memorial Foundation Jamboree, set March 29.

go. They were not sure she(Jada) would make it.”

While battling on two fronts, the Neids finally learned on thethird day in the hospital thatJada had “pulmonary hyperten-sion,” because of two holes inher heart that caused her heartchamber on the right side to beenlarged.

“We knew at birth there wasone hole in her heart,” Corysaid.

He said the side of the heartthat pushes or pumps the bloodout was pumping twice as hardbecause the other side that ac-cepts blood back into the heartwas not working properly.

“Having the hole in her heartactually saved her life,” Corysaid.

“Being there five days (atChildren’s), we finally knewwhat was wrong,” Jessicaadded. “The next plan wastreatment.”

Jessica added that during thewhole ordeal (42 days at Chil-dren’s Hospital), they were notallowed to hold Jada.

Jada was placed on 16 med-ications before doctors gradual-ly weaned her off most of themover a 12-day period. She isnow on six medications, theNeids said. She also is on oxy-gen at all times with the feedingtube in her stomach.

“She was in the hospital 56days, total,” Jessica said.

Since then, Jada has beenback to Children’s Hospitalseveral other times, including arecent 25-minute surgery “for afeeding tube button.”

Jada also had the respiratorysynctical virus (RSV), a veryserious virus for infants, and onJan. 30 had another “breathingepisode” that landed her atChildren’s Hospital for anotherfive days.

Besides all her other medicalissues, Jada also is in physicaltherapy for her stiff neck fromall those days in the hospital.

“She has come a long ways,”Jessica said, and now has moremovement in her neck.

Jada and the Neids also havehome nursing care six days aweek, “except for Sundays, which is family time,” Jessicasaid.

Being on oxygen 100 percentof the time, the Neids takeJada’s tanks with them wherev-

er they go.Jada does not drink from bot-

tles or get liquids, but she isstarting to eat baby foods, Corysaid.

The Neids called Children’sHospital “absolutely amazing”for the care, not only of Jada, but the whole family.

“Jada has them wrappedaround her finger,” Jessicasmiled about the Children’sHospital nurses and doctors.

As to her prognosis, theNeids said the right lung lobe ismissing. The left lung is nor-mal.

She still has one hole at thetop of her heart, but that ischecked every three months.“The hole will either stay thesame or get smaller as shegrows,” Cory said. “Each visit, the hole gets smaller.”

He added the second hole hasclosed.

Jada will have pulmonary hy-pertension the rest of her life. However, doctors indicate shecan still lead a normal life, butmay not be an athlete or amarathon runner.

“But Jada will determinewhat she wants to be,” Coryadded.

Jessica said doctors told themthat with Jada in the hospital125 days, “that’s how far she isbehind on her development.”

But Jessica smiled and saidJada gained a pound in the last2-1/2 weeks, and she can nowsay a few words.

“Her favorite thing is puttingthe oxygen tube in her mouthand blowing bubbles,” Corylaughed.

Jessica works at the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District as ahealth assistant, and Cory is anover-the-road truck driver.

Jessica said if she hadworked anywhere else, she maynot have a job now.

“They (school administra-tors) have been very under-standing,” she said of all thetime she has been off work andat Children’s Hospital withJada. “They have worked withme so much. Mr. (Supt. Chris)Sonju and Mr. (Principal Paul)Sparby have been amazing.”

Jessica and Cory both agreedthat Jan. 1 was perhaps the firsttime they could actually “feelnormal” as a family.

But another frustrationcame, this time to RicardoSr. as his son’s doctor’sbills were piling up.

“I was working atYoung America Corp.,and they told me to lookfor another job or find myown insurance, because itwas totaling almost $1million,” Ricardo Sr. said.He made light of the situa-tion by adding, “You’reour $1 million man, butwhere’s the money!?”

Ricardo Sr. took anoth-er job at AMPI in Glen-coe, where he worked forapproximately six years

before it closed. “Money wise, it was

expensive,” said RicardoSr. “Knowing the way hewas at the time, with allthe medical bills, and wehad to take him to thecities all the time. It wastough.”

Maria said she hadnever heard of the OrthFoundation until a dieti-cian mentioned it to her inNovember.

Joanna knew of thefoundation from attendingGSL as well, but said shedidn’t know it was some-thing you could apply for.

“I had heard of it, butdidn’t know exactly whatit was or how it worked,”Joanna said. “I thoughtthat they picked (the re-cipients). I didn’t knowyou could apply.”

The family said pro-ceeds from the Orth Eventwill go toward a newhandicap accessible van. They currently own one,but are due for an up-grade.

“We have a van, but it’sold and (the lift) getsstuck. It even left usstranded once,” Joannasaid. “We were going to

an appointment in Chaskawhen it just started shak-ing.”

While the Martinezfamily has certainly en-dured a lot, they stressedthat Ricardo Jr. is worth it.

“I don’t see a life with-out him in it,” said Maria.“The beginning was verydifficult, because nobodyin our family has anythinglike it. But with God’shelp, we’ve been able toget through this. It’s nor-mal now, and it’s made usa tighter family.”

“He’s our little miraclebaby!” Joanna added.

Joanna also said shewas very protective ofhim when they were inschool together.

“He used to like wear-ing cowboy hats andboots to school when hewas younger. I used to begmom, ‘Don’t let him wearthat!’ I just didn’t like any-body staring at him be-cause he was different. Hedidn’t care, though. But Ilove having him here (athome),” Joanna said.Adding with a laugh,“Who would I argue withif you weren’t here?”

The gamble love takes

Few things in life are certain, so I guess everything has a gamble to it. We take our chances when we go for a drive, plantfields, or climb a ladder. We also take our chances when we give away our money. Gambling is one way to give up yourmoney. And the motivation is that you will win more money back for yourself.

But what if we took a gamble to win something for another person? Still an attractive undertaking? I think we could viewgiving to charities in this way. No guarantee that your donation will change a life, but there’s a possibility! Is it a chance worthtaking? I think so. Because what could be better from a Christian point of view than to give and to see someone else benefit.

God leads the way on this. God takes a gamble by involving himself in this world from creation to salvation. Jesus gave hisall with no guarantees that it would win you over, but he took that chance. Every person in this world has value and dignity inthe sight of God.

Move by God to love our neighbor, I want to invite you to consider a different way to gamble – whether you gamble or not.Take a chance on people. Give to those places that are seeking to help people. There are no guarantees that your donation to acharity will be the one to steer a young person on the right path or feed a person who then saves a life, but love makes it worththe risk. Giving to charities brings a big payout in the good it does for others.

This weekly message is contributed by the following concerned citizens and businesses who urge you to attend the church of your choice. To be added to this page, contact us at 320-864-5518.

Xtratyme Technologies ofHutchinson has announcedplans to expand its centralMinnesota broadband net-work throughout SibleyCounty and surroundingcounties.

According to Kyle Acker-man, founder of XtratymeTechnologies, this expansionwill provide many under-served broadband-starvedareas with high speed, premi-um quality Internet access —something that has neverbeen available in some areas.

The company is introduc-ing its upcoming packages toareas that have had minimalchoices for broadband con-

nectivity in the past.Ackerman said there has

recently been significantmedia attention given to thebroadband topic. Many aresaying that if broadband isnot made available to every-one, small businesses, com-munities, and the residents ofthe underserved areas couldsuffer significant economicchallenges, he said.

“I agree with the premisethat good Internet access isrequired for the economy. Ifsome areas do not have ac-ceptable Internet speeds, theymay quickly find that theyhave a disadvantage overtheir well-connected counter-

parts,” said Ackerman. “Thisarea is difficult to debate.”

He added there is no ques-tion that the Sibley Countyarea could use more Internetaccess choices and that com-petition could help to bringbetter quality and more eco-nomical services to its citi-zens.

“I do, however, still believethat traditional capitalism hasa role here. If there is a needfor broadband, and it is clear-ly defined, then the privatesector will provide solutionsto the need,” Ackerman said.

Delivery of broadbandservices to the customer hasalways been a problem. It is

extremely expensive to pro-vide fiber access to customersin remote or lightly populatedareas, Ackerman said.

He said Xtratyme uses ter-restrial, or fixed, wireless todeliver its Internet access. This technology is improvingsignificantly, and it is now ca-pable of delivering speedswell over a gigabit per sec-ond, he added.

Xtratyme is in the processof expanding its network andit expects to offer its newpackages to the Sibley Coun-ty area by early summer,Ackerman said. Deploymentplans are already underway tomake this expansion a reality,

he added.Xtratyme’s expansion plans

involve the use of silos andother structures for its wire-less network antennas.

“There are thousands ofcompanies like ours through-out the world. We are lookingfor opportunities and cus-tomers. If they exist, we willprovide good Internet ac-cess,” Ackerman said.

“This is not a project thatrequires taxpayer dollars orrisks. The government, ifanything, should become acatalyst by offering us moreaccess to radio frequenciesand possibly even reward us(through tax breaks) for pro-

viding service to underservedareas. That is how govern-ment could work with the pri-vate sector,” Ackerman said.“Maybe Governor Daytonwas thinking as a capitalistwhen he tossed out the broad-band incentive? Let’s hopeso.”

The Xtratyme network cov-ers a significant portion ofcentral Minnesota and its ex-pansion plans are under wayto expand its servicesthroughout the state.Xtratyme is a locally owned, private Minnesota corpora-tion.
