CBS correspondent Steve Hartman once had an award-winning feature series named Everybody Has a Story. He would toss a dart at a map of the United States and then travel to wherever the dart landed. Upon arrival, Hartman would find a phonebook, and choosing a name at random, would try to find a person who would agree to be interviewed and tell his or her story. It didn't matter who they were or what they had to say, no one was eliminated, and everyone had their story on the air. The result was unique and wildly unpredictable television. Everyone has a story, but few people take the time to listen. Chamber events are opportunities to meet people in all different lines of work, from different cultures and backgrounds and discover their stories. You will be amazed at the interesting experiences our members have had. I think we sometimes forget that everyone has a story. As we run our errands, fill up our gas tanks, wait in traffic, or wander around at a networking event, we may unintentionally dismiss nameless faces who may carry stories just like ours. There are many common threads among all of us if only we could become better listeners. Try to take more than a couple minutes to talk to someone at the next event, and maybe you will discover a story.

Ask the Lawyer…. In case you missed it, Debra K. Schuster gave a powerful presentation on "What is Your Life Care Plan" at a July Brown Bag Lunch meeting. Following is an article she wrote for our readers.

Now is the time – create your Durable Powers of Attorney! My pet peeve has nothing to do with being a neat freak or people texting during dinner. My pet peeve is that people avoid planning for the future when it is so easy and can avoid unnecessary expense and emotional turmoil in the future. I am referring to the fact that so few people have Durable Powers of Attorney - documents that allow you to appoint who you want and trust to make health care and financial decisions for you if you become unable to do so for yourself. There are two documents I am referring to – the Health Care Directive and Financial (General) Durable Power of Attorney. The Health Care Directive contains both a Durable Power of Attorney for Health care and what is commonly known as a Living Will. The Durable Power of Attorney for Health care allows you to appoint who you trust and believe will honor your treatment wishes if you are determined by a doctor to be unable to make health care decisions. This document is often used in very common situations – if you need routine surgery or in the event of an illness or injury when you cannot speak for yourself and you need someone to consent to treatment and talk to your doctor. The Living Will portion of the document allows you to explain what end-of-life treatment you do or do not want. The treatment can be all “life-sustaining” care – CPR, artificial ventilator support, dialysis, artificial nutrition and hydration – or just care to keep you comfortable. The Financial (General) Durable Power of Attorney is as important as the Health Care Directive and allows you to appoint who you want to make financial decisions for you if you are determined by a doctor to be unable to handle your financial decisions independently. You should appoint someone you trust to handle your money, who is financially secure and responsible with timely paying of his or her own bills. These documents should be created for EVERYONE over the age of 18 (because even if parents are financially supporting their children, once a child is over the age of 18, they are legal adults and a parent cannot make decisions or obtain information, even in an emergency, unless legally appointed under these documents or by a court). So, to avoid someone having to go to court and unnecessarily spend thousands of dollars to help you when a crisis arises, NOW is the time to have these documents created – when you can discuss these issues with your family calmly before an emergency occurs. We feel these documents are so important that we are offering a $50 discount on Durable Powers of Attorney for all Chamber members who refer to this article when making an appointment with us. For more information contact me at Debra K. Schuster & Associates, 1120 Olivette Executive Pkwy., Ste. 220, St. Louis MO 63132. My phone number is 314-991-2602.
