Lynn’s CornerHi peepsicles,

That’s what we all are as I write this, FROZEN!! I guess we’ve been pretty lucky up until now with the weath-

er this winter, but this sure isn’t much fun. I hope everyone is staying warm and keeping those water buckets

and troughs ice free. And I guess we could look at the bright side – at least we’re getting a respite from the

mud! ☺

Hope those of you who attended the Annual Meeting

had a great time, I was sorry to have to miss it but a

sick baby prevented me from getting away. Don’t for-

get we still have the big Gala to look forward to next

month – see the flyer in this issue for more informa-

tion.

Stay warm out there!

Lynn

AppreciatingMasterson StationPark

By: Lynn Miles

The recent call from MET for stories on how we use

Masterson  Station  Park’s  Equestrian  facilities  to

improve  our  horses  and  riding  got  me  thinking.  I

think  I  am  the  poster  child  for  someone who  used

Masterson as a critical  tool  in developing my horse

and reaching our goals. While I’ve been away from

competing  for  several  years  now,  I  think my  story

still proves perfectly what a gem Masterson Station

Park is for us horse folks and just how lucky we are

to have it.

Many  of  you might  remember my  fantabulous  and

wonderful  horse  Peak,  but  for  those  of  you  who

weren’t around “way back then,” he and I had a great

career together. He was in the top 3 at many Training

events  and usually  brought  home  ribbons  at  Prelim

too,  including  an  8th  place  finish  at  the  Midsouth

Three-Day One Star. When I had Peak, I didn’t have

the funds to board at a “real” barn, so he had to rough

it at a place I fondly referred to as Duct Tape Acres.

Anyone remember  the dilapidated barn  that used  to

be  on Newtown by Citation? Yep,  that’s where my

wonderful  eventer  called home. There was no  ring,

only paddocks  to  ride  in and  those were  filled with

weeds and only got mowed a couple of times a year.

Not  exactly  ideal  conditions  for  training  an  event

horse!  I  remember one  time  trying  to do my gallop

sets in one of the paddocks and he was actually hop-

ping like a deer trying to get over the giant weeds. I

realized this was not going to work, so I started trai-

lering to Masterson almost every day to ride in their

rings,  jump  their  jumps and do my conditioning on

their  lovely,  mowed  land.  I  even  used  the  indoor

Continued on next page

February 2013 12

arena on my lunch breaks in the winter months to get

him legged up.

Thankfully, it wasn’t a long haul, but for any of you

who work full time and own a home to keep up, you

know  it’s  still  a  commitment  to  have  to  take  your

horse  somewhere  nearly  every  day  to  ride.  But

because  the  facilities  are  so wonderful,  it made  the

effort worthwhile. Never would we have been able to

do the things we did or have the success we had with-

out Masterson (or the help and guidance of an amaz-

ing  trainer  and  coach  –  shout  out  to  the  fabulous

Jorge Montalvo!).

My favorite thing at Masterson was my early morn-

ing gallop days. Every 5 days I would wake up before

the sun, go fetch Peak in the dark, get him loaded and

be putting a foot in the stirrup just as there was light

on the horizon. Many days there would be mist in the

gulley  beyond  the  dressage  rings  as we  trotted  and

then galloped in the silent, serene fields. It was just us

and  the  only  sound was  the  steady  pfff  pfff  pfff  of

Peak’s  breathing  as  he  galloped  along  at  sunrise.  I

can honestly  say  that during each and every one of

those rides I took in the beauty around me and real-

ized how incredibly blessed I was to be there doing

what  I  loved on my  favorite  horse  in  the world.  In

fact, one day I even sent my parents a note after my

morning  ride  thanking  them  for making  it  possible

for me to have horses in my life and telling them how

very much the presence of my horses influenced my

life and the person I turned into.

I would not have had those moments, which remain

some of my favorite memories, without the wonder-

ful Masterson Station Park. So for all of us who are

lucky enough to use and enjoy the park, please don’t

ever take it for granted. And if there’s anyone (I can’t

imagine  it’s  possible)  who  hasn’t  ventured  over  to

use  this  jewel  of Lexington,  get  your  trailers  ready

and GO! It’s a wonderful place to enjoy your horse,

no  matter  what  discipline  you  participate  in.  And

please, never forget how lucky you are to have hors-

es in your life – they bless us in ways we sometimes

don’t even understand.
