Dear Parents and Carers This past week has flown by. Year 11 and 13 have completed assessments to demonstrate how much they have learned over lockdown in the most challenging of circumstances and I would like to express how proud I am of them all. They have displayed a fantastic attitude and fortitude, and they are a credit to us all. This week we also celebrated the feast day of Oscar Romero and it was a privilege to celebrate with all our Romero partner schools. In addition to this, Mrs Alton and Miss McNulty-Mullen have been visiting our primary schools with certificates and rewards for all students who have engaged with our transition projects. It is absolutely thrilling that 62 of our entrants from Years 3 - 6 will be published in a national publication by “Young Writers”. Our enrichment opportunities continue to gather pace and I would encourage you to monitor our social media platforms to look at what is on offer and encourage your child to take part. Particularly exciting is the launch of a new music club for aspiring DJs and producers by our resident DJs Mr Scorey and Mr Marwaha. Students have access to professional equipment and we cannot wait to see our students thrive. Thank you for your continued support with Covid 19 testing from home and once again our students have shown incredible maturity in their dedication to keep all members of our school community safe. As ever we continue to follow government and Public Health England advice and will update you with any further news. Have an enjoyable a weekend as we move towards Holy Week. God bless. Mr Everett

CHAPLAINCY

On Wednesday 24 March all eight schools of the Romero Academy came together to celebrate the feast day of Saint Oscar Romero with a Mass streamed live from Saint John Fisher Church. As a community of faith, we prayed for all those who learn, work and govern in our partnership of schools. We thank Father Des and Father Tony for celebrating Mass virtually with us.

Celebrating the Feast Day of

Saint Oscar Romero Together

Over the last couple of weeks, Tom Machin has been working with students from all of the primaries and Cardinal Wiseman to create a video about Oscar Romero. We are really thrilled to share it with you: https://youtu.be/OffwzvO9wus

The Mass was led by RE leads from the schools and our new Lay Chaplain at Cardinal Wiseman, Tom Machin.

Year 9 Options

Information has been presented to Year 9 during tutor time in school this week and Year 9 now have the opportunity to consider the option courses which are available to them from Year 10. This means the curriculum will be more personalised and there will be some choice in the subjects studied at GCSE. We strongly recommend that your child continues studying a Modern Foreign Language as this will lead to the completion of the English Baccalaureate.

KEY STAGE 3 NEWS CONTINUED

We are delighted to announce that Esha VP from Year 8 has won first prize in the RE writing blog competition. Her fantastic entry has been submitted to Culham St Gabriel's Trust and national winning entries will be announced in April. Good luck Esha! Here is a short extract from Esha's winning entry: Is Religious Education applicable in the 21st century? “Yes. Life is made up of different emotions and feelings. Even before civilisation, man has been going through ups and downs in life and how he handles them, emotionally and mentally, is one significant facet of R.E. Knowing how to balance emotional and psychological well-being is something, even in the 21st century, people find hard and upcoming technical inventions such as social media are not helpful. R.E helps us find peace, happiness and the bigger purpose in life, it boosts our self-esteem and self-confidence. For every individual to evolve as a better person and make this world a better place to live, let us educate ourselves through R.E.”

Runners up from the competition are George K and Keziah O from Year 7. Miss Howe

The police have received complaints from

residents of Collier Place on Woodway Lane,

regarding parents using the parking area when

collecting students after school.

This area belongs to a home for the elderly and

it is important that it is kept clear for

ambulances and visiting care workers.

Could parents please be considerate and avoid

parking there even for a short time.

Dear Parents / Carers

ELECTION OF A PARENT GOVERNOR (NOW KNOWN AS PARENT REPRESENTATIVE)

The Articles of Association and Scheme of Delegation requires that the local academy committee must include two parent representatives who have been elected by the parents of registered pupils of the school and who are them-selves parents of registered pupils of the school at the time of their election. However, any parent who is an elected member of the local authority or employed to work at the school for more than 500 hours in any twelve consecutive months is not eligible to be a parent representative.

There is currently one vacancy and you are therefore invited to take part in the election of one parent representative for this school who will serve on the local academy committee for 4 years unless they resign the post in the interim.

Nomination forms are available from Mrs Robins on [email protected] and must be returned to the school no later than 12.00 pm on Monday 19 April 2021. Should one nomination be received by the official closing date, the candidate will be duly elected unopposed. In the event of there being two or more nominations, an election will take place between Monday 26 April 2021 and Tuesday 4 May 2021. Information on voting arrange-ments will be sent to you at a later date.

Please note that you should not participate in more nominations than there are vacancies. Each nomination requires two proposers.

Yours faithfully

needs of the Party. Yet he inwardly rebels against the totalitarian world he

lives in, which demands absolute obedience and controls him through the

all-seeing telescreens and the watchful eye of Big Brother, symbolic head

of the Party. In his longing for truth and liberty, Smith begins a secret

love affair with a fellow-worker Julia, but soon discovers the true price

of freedom is betrayal.

This week, our look at Art & Culture focused on one area that has been impacted as a result of the pandemic - Musical Theatre.

In December 2017, the hit show ‘Hamilton’ opened in London to huge acclaim. The American Musical is a sung and rapped musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It tells the story of American Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton.

SAFEGUARDING

Introducing the Safeguarding Team

At Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School we recognise that safeguarding and child protection is an essential part of our duty of care to all students and all staff have a responsibility to provide a safe environment in which children can learn. We understand that safeguarding, child protection and promoting the welfare of all children is everyone’s responsibility.

If you have any concerns about your child’s wellbeing please contact the team: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) - Mrs Marshment (Assistant Vice Principal) Deputy Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) - Miss Jones Deputy Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) - Miss Gregory Safeguarding Assistant - Mrs Giles

Email: [email protected] The Attendance Team

We need each child to attend school whenever they are well enough to do so, ideally 98% - 100% of the academic year. This means they make the best academic progress possible, socialise with other children and can join some of the clubs that are offered outside of lesson time.

Absence or lateness to school can be an indicator that something is wrong, so the Safeguarding and Attendance teams work closely together to offer any additional support with overcoming barriers to attendance.

If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance please contact the team:

Attendance Officer - Miss Walsh Attendance HLTA - Miss Sandhu
