It’s always a great honor to bring another edition of Boericke, theultimate book on Materia Medica, complete in knowledge facilitatedwith latest updates and changes to accommodate the changing trendsand perceptions in homeopathy. It is imperative to state that the lastedition, at the beginning of the new millennium was widely appreci-ated and praised by the homeopathic fraternity for its indepth analysis,modern terminology, dictionary, footnotes, font, print and presenta-tion.

This third revised and augmented edition goes further ahead as theuse of the new font and italics accentuate the text and make the con-tents more comprehensive.

Readers will be delighted to see the insertion of tinctures in thisedition as it was something which has been due it’s worth for a longtime.

Also the ‘Rare and Uncommon Remedies’ section has been re-moved as a separate section, but included appropriately along with therelated drugs at more relevant places giving a comprehensive accountof their viability and use.

To maintain the high standard of the book all abbreviations havebeen derived from the ‘Synthesis Repertory 9.1’ in the materia medicaand repertory portion, thus making this edition of Boericke more adoptand complete in a wholesome manner.

As indeed always, we wish the readers a very happy experiencewhile going through the book which as always has been both enrichingand comprehensive in it’s whole perspective.

REVISED & AUGMENTED EDITION

This, latest edition of the Boericke comes to you at the beginningof the new millenium with a sincere effort to streamline it in trend withthe other advancements in the field of homoeopathy in particular, andmedicine in general.

To begin with, an effort has been made to correct all the grammaticalerrors and to technically upgrade the book in relation to modernterminology. For example, pressure deep in the orbits (glaucoma),without making any changes in the text of the whole book. The modernterminology, confined to brackets throughout the text has been co-related with various source books like, Dictionary of Practical MateriaMedica by Dr. J. H. Clarke; 1001 Small Remedies by Dr. F. Schroyens;Handbook of Materia Medica by Dr. T. F. Allen; etc.

This edition has further been facilitated by foot notes given at thebottom of the page, for instance, Pg. 25, throat deafness1:- 1—Hearing—impaired—tonsils enlarged (1001 Small Remedies, edited by Dr. F.Schroyens), which further elaborate or explain the correspondingsymptom, along with the name of the source book.

All the abbreviations and names of the drugs, in the book andrepertory are now, according to the Synthesis, like Thuya - Thuj.; Helleb.- Hell.; etc. Also, all the spellings have been corrected according toDorland’s 28th edition, for instance diarrhoea is now diarrhea;anaesthesia is now anesthesia; etc.

The sequence of Mind, Head, Eyes, etc, in the drugs have beenarranged according to those in the Kent’s Repertory throughout thebook to maintain a more orderly and uniform pattern.

Aluminium silicata and Kaolinum have been merged as one drugas they are one and the same.

In the repertory section of this book, the same pattern has beenmaintained but the chapters have been re-arranged in accordance toKent’s Repertory to minimise confusion. An Index to the Repertoryhas been incorporated with the meaning of words along with thecorrelated page numbers, rendering it more complete and convenientto use.

The previously existing Indian Drugs have been provided with moreinformation and new additions.

A special section on some commonly used Nosodes has been addedin this volume along with a re-arranged Rare and Uncommon Remedies,throwing more light on this, comparatively under-studied field ofhomoeopathy.

And last but not the least, an Index of the drugs, with both commonand Latin names, has been introduced in the beginning of this bookunder Contents with the proper listing of all the chapters as well, togive a head start to the reader in his quest to explore the vast sphere ofknowledge that this edition is going to provide.

PREFACE TO THE NINTH EDITION

In preparing the ninth edition, I have followed thelines laid out for all the previous editions, namely,to present in a condensed form the homeopathicmateria medica for practical use.

The book contains the well known verifiedcharacteristic symptoms of all our medicinesbesides other less important symptoms aiding inthe selection of the curative remedy. All the newmedicines and essentials of the published clinicalexperience of the school have been added. In its

present compact form, it contains the maximum number of reliablemateria medica facts in the minimum space.

I have tried to give a succinct resumé of the symptomatology ofevery medicine used in homeopathy, including clinical suggestions ofseveral drugs which have not yet been based on provings, thus offeringthe opportunity to experiment with these and by future provings,discover their distinctive use and enlarge our armamentarium.

I am aware that there is a difference of opinion about the advisabilityof further introduction of remedies, especially of some which as seemobsolete or to some minds, illusory. But it is not for the compiler toleave out information about any substance that has received the clinicalendorsement from a reliable source.

Our materia medica must include all substances which have beenproved and which have been used with apparent efficacy. It rests withthe individual student to judge for himself the accuracy and reliabilityof such observation. In this connection, I cannot forego to avail myselfof the high authority of that master of homeopathy, Dr. ConstantineHering, who favoured the introduction of all remedies capable ofproducing reactions in the body that may guide us to their medicinal

employment. “Homeopathy is essentially not only many-sided but all-sided.” She investigates the action of all substances, whether articlesof diet, beverages, condiments, drugs or poisons. She investigates theiraction on the healthy, the sick, animals and plants. She gives a newinterpretation to that ancient, often quoted saying of Paul, “Prove allthings—a new meaning, a new application that acts universally.”Elimination of the useless may gradually take place with the growth ofaccurate physiological and pathological knowledge.”

Again, imperfectly proved remedies necessitate the use of namesof diseases at times instead of the component symptoms that alone arethe legitimate guide to the choice of the curative remedy. Here, too, Ihave Hering, as a pioneer guide for the ligitimacy of this method, whichhe also followed in his great work, the Guiding Symptoms. He saidthat he used the disease designations not for the purpose ofrecommending the particular remedy for that disease, but to show thegreat variety of remedies that may be used for any form of diseasewhen otherwise indicated. For the same reason I have includednosological terms in the symptomatology and the therapeutic index, asthis is a practical handbook for every-day service, and an aid for findingthe curative remedy ought to be utilized. As Dr. J. Compton Burnettexpresses it:

"The fact is, we need any and every way of finding the right remedy;the simple simile, the simple symptomatic simillimum and the farthestreach of all-the pathological simillimum, and I maintain that we arestill well within the lines of homeopathy that is expansive, progressive,science fostered and science fostering.’

The dosage needs some apology. It is, of course, suggestive only;more often to be wholly disregarded. I have followed the lines of theearlier homeopathists in this regard, and given what was then consideredthe usual range of potency, to which I have added my own experienceand that of many observing practitioners. Every teacher of materiamedica is constantly importuned by students to suggest the potency—something to start with at least.

The book is in no sense a treatise and must not be considered orjudged as such. It is as accurate and reliable a compilation and thefullest collection of verified materia medica facts and clinical

suggestions as it is possible to obtain with the compass of the volume.It supplements every other work on materia medica, and if used as aready reminder of the essential facts of our vast symptomatology andas an introduction to the larger books of reference and record ofprovings, it will fulfill its purpose and prove a useful aid to the studentand general practitioner. As such it is again offered with muchappreciation of past endorsement to his professional brethren.

I have been aided in seeing this edition through the press by theefficient help of Mr. F.O. Ernesty, who has lightened the labor ofmaking the manuscript more acceptable to the printers, and I desire toexpress my hearty appreciation of this kind and helpful service.

PREFACE TO THE REPERTORY

With the advent of the incomparable ninthedition of the progressive Pocket MateriaMedica, its modest companion, the Repertory,had been completely remodelled and broughtup to date, by embodying much of the newlyincorporated material. Many of the sections havebeen carefully rewritten, and with appropriateexpansion, offer a more trustworthy guide forthe selection of the homoeopathic remedy. Afew prefatory remarks, pertaining to the practicaland expeditious use of the repertorial contents,

may assist in clarifying a certain inevitable obscurity of plan.

First, in conformity with established repertorial methods, thedivision of the sections in somewhat the old Hahnemannian order isadhered to, and may be stated as follows: Mind; Head; Eyes; Ears; etc.

Secondly, for the purpose of convenience, solely, headings andsub-headings and specific conditions or symptoms comprised underthe latter are arranged in alphabetical order, and this is more or lessconsistently adhered to throughout the entire work. For example,under Mind the headings read, Awkward, Brainfag, Catalepsy, etc.;likewise the heading Delirium embraces its various phases inalphabetical order.

Thirdly, all headings when extensive in scope—e.g. Headache, arepresented under definite captions in the following order: cause, type,location, character of pain, concomitants, nodalities—i.e., aggravationsand ameliorations. It is to be observed that some headings include onlya few, whereas others include all of these divisions. This method hasbeen resorted to simply to facilitate the task of the use of the repertory.

Fourth, to preserve uniformity, the technical names of diseases arebracketed, thereby assuming a subsidiary place, which is in strict

accord with the homoeopathic requirement, to prescribe for thesymptoms of each specific case, and not for a mere name of a disease.Of course, being a clinical and not a truly symptomatological index(for which the practitioner and student are referred to the monumentalworks of Kent, Knerr and Clarke) technical terms are often selected asmain headings, and when feasible, the more or less complete symptomsconstitute the sub-headings.

Fifthly, the remedies are arranged in alphabetical order, and theitalics indicate the more frequently verified clinical remedy. Theabbreviations of the remedies are purely arbitrary and self-explanatory.

A complete alphabetical index, newly added, will surely offermuch assistance to the busy practitioner, in the ready reference to thespecific information desired.

Lastly, it is only by the persistent use of one repertory, that itspeculiar and intricate arrangements gradually crystallizes itself indefinite outline, in the mind of the student of the same, and thus heattains the ready case and practical insight of the collator, therebyrendering such a clinical bee-line well-nigh in-dispensable in our dayof labour-saving devices.

VARIOLINUM(Lymph From Small Pox Pustule) Vario.

Used for “internal vaccination.” Seems to be efficacious in protectingagainst, modifying and aiding in the cure of small pox.

Head: Morbid fear of small pox. Pain in the occiput.Eyes: Inflamed eyelids (blepharitis).Ears: Deafness.Respiratory: Oppressed breathing. Throat feels closed. Cough with thick

viscid, bloody mucus (hemoptysis). Sensation of a lump in the right side ofthroat.

Back: Excruciating backache. Pain shifts from the back to the abdomen.Extremities: Aching in legs. Tired all over with restlessness. Wrists painful.Fever: Hot fever, with intense radiating heat. Profuse, bad smelling sweat.Skin: Hot, dry. Eruption of pustules. Shingles (herpes zoster).Relationship: Compare: Vac. (same action); Maland.: The morbid product

of the grease of the horse (a prophylactic of small pox and a remedy for the illeffects of vaccination; chronic eczema following vaccination).

VERATRUM ALBUM(White Hellebore) Verat.

A perfect picture of collapse with extreme coldness, blueness, andweakness, is offered by this drug. Post-operative shock with cold sweat on theforehead a pale face and rapid, feeble pulse. Cold perspiration on the forehead,with nearly all complaints. Vomiting, purging, and cramps in extremities.Profuse, violent retching and vomiting is most characteristic. Surgical shock.Excessive dryness of all mucous membranes. “Coprophagia” violent maniaalternates with silence and a refusal to talk.

Mind: Melancholy, with stupor and mania. Sits in a stupid manner; noticesnothing; Sullen indifference. Frenzy of excitement; shrieks, curses. Puerperalmania. Aimless wandering from home. Delusions of impending misfortunes.Mania, with a desire to cut and tear things (Tarent.). Attacks of pain, withdelirium driving the patient to madness. Cursing, howling all night.

Head: Contracted features. Cold sweat on the forhead. Sensation of alump of ice on the vertex (apoplexy). Headache with nausea, vomiting, diarrheaand a pale face. Neck too weak to hold head up.

Eyes: Surrounded by dark rings. Staring; turned upwards (epilepsy,

meningitis). Without lustre. Lachrymation with hyperemia. Lids, dry heavy.Face: Features sunken. Icy coldness of the tip of the nose and face. Nose

grows more pointed. Tearing in cheeks, temples and eyes. Face very pale,blue, collapsed, cold.

Mouth: Tongue pale, cold; cool sensation, as from peppermint. Dry inthe center, not relieved by water. Salty saliva. Toothache, teeth feel heavy, asif filled with lead.

Stomach: Voracious appetite. Thirst for cold water, but is vomited assoon as it is swallowed. Averse to warm food. Hiccough. Copious vomitingand nausea; aggravated by drinking and least motion. Craves fruits, juicyand cold things, ice, salt. Anguish in the pit of the stomach. Great weaknessafter vomiting. Gastric irritability with chronic vomiting of food.

Abdomen: Sinking and empty feeling. Cold feeling in the stomach andabdomen. Pain in the abdomen preceding stool. Cramps, knotting abdomenand legs. Sensation as if hernia would protrude (Nux-v.). Abdomen sensitiveto pressure, swollen with terrible colic.

Stool: Constipation from inactivity of the rectum, with heat and headache.Constipation in babies due to very cold weather. Stools large, with muchstraining till exhausted, with cold sweat. Diarrhea, very painful, watery, copiousand forcibly evacuated, followed by great prostration. Evacuations of choleramorbus and true cholera when vomiting accompanies the purging.

Female: Menses too early; profuse and exhausting. Dysmenorrhea withcoldness, purging, cold sweat. Faints from least exertion. Sexual mania precedesmenses.

Respiratory: Hoarse, weak voice. Rattling in the chest. Abundant mucusin the bronchial tubes, that cannot be coughed up. Coarse rales. Chronicbronchitis in the aged (Hippoz.). Loud, barking, stomach cough, followed byeructation of gas; worse in a warm room. Hollow cough, tickling low down,with a blue face (cyanosed). Cough comes on from drinking, especially coldwater; urine escapes when coughing. Cough on entering a warm room fromcold air (Bry.).

Heart: Palpitations with anxiety (angina pectoris), and rapid audiblerespiration. Pulse irregular, feeble. Tobacco heart from chewing tobacco.Intermittent action of heart in feeble people with some hepatic obstruction.One of the best heart stimulants in homeopathic doses (J. S. Mitchell).

Extremities: Soreness and tenderness of joints. Sciatica; pains like electricflashes. Cramps in calves. Neuralgia in the brachial plexus; arms feel swollen,cold, paralytic.

Fever: Chill with extreme coldness and thirst.Skin: Blue, cold, clammy, inelastic; cold as death. Cold sweat. Wrinkling

of skin of hands and feet.

(intermittent, cold,clammy sweat); Narcissus poeticus (gastroenteritis with severe griping andcutting pain in bowels. Fainting, trembling, cold limbs, small and irregularpulse); Trychosanthes dioica (diarrhea, pain in liver, dizziness after every stool);Agaricus emeticus (vertigo; longing for ice cold water; burning pain in stomach);Agaricus phalloides (cholera, cramps in stomach, cold extremities, urinesuppressed). Veratrinum (increased vascular tension. It relaxes it and stimulatesthe elimination of toxins by skin, kidneys, and liver).

Dose: First to thirtieth potency. In diarrhea, not below the sixth.

VERATRUM VIRIDE(White American Hellebore) Verat-v.

Paroxysms of auricular fibrillation. Induces fall of both systolic anddiastolic blood pressure. Congestions, especially lungs and base of the brain,with nausea and vomiting. Twitchings and convulsions. Especially adapted tofull blooded, plethoric people. Great prostration. Rheumatism of the heart.Bloated, livid face. Furious delirium. Effects of sunstroke. Esophagitis(Farrington). Verat-v. will raise the opsonic index against the diploccuspneumonia, 70 to 109 percent. Congestive stage and early manifestations ofhepatization in pneumonia. Zigzag temperature. Clinically, it is known thatdiseases such as Tiegel’s contracture, Thompson’s disease, athetosis and pseudo-hypertrophic muscular paralysis present a symptomatology quite similar tothat produced by Verat-v. on muscular tissue (A. E. Hinsdale, M.D.).

Mind: Quarrelsome and delirious.Head: Congestion intense, almost apoplectic. Hot head, bloodshot eyes.

Bloated, livid face. Hippocratic face. Head retracted, pupils dilated, diplopia.Meningitis. Pain from the nape of neck; cannot hold head up. Sunstroke; headfeels full, throbbing arteries (Bell., Glon., Usn.). Face flushed. Convulsivetwitching of facial muscles (Agar.). Vertigo with nausea.

Mouth: Tongue white or yellow, with a red streak down the middle. Feelsscalded. Increased saliva.

Stomach: Thirsty. Nausea and vomiting. Smallest quantity of food or drinkis immediately rejected. Constrictive pain; increased by warm drinks. Hiccough;excessive and painful, with spasms of esophagus. Burning in the stomach andesophagus.

Heart: Pulse slow, soft, weak, irregular, intermittent. Rapid pulse, lowtension (Tab., Dig.). Constant, dull, burning pain in the region of heart Valvulardiseases. Beating of pulses throughout the body, especially in the right thigh.

Extremities: Aching pains in the back of the neck and shoulders. Severepain in joints and muscles. Violent electric shock-like pain in limbs. Convulsivetwitchings (chorea). Acute rheumatism. Fever.

Fever: Hyperthermy in the evening and hypothermy in the morning.Suppurative fevers with great variation of temperature.

VERBASCUM THAPSUS(Mullein) Verb.

Has a pronounced action on the inferior maxillary branch of the fifth pairof cranial nerves; on the ear; respiratory tract and bladder. Catarrhs and colds,with periodical prosopalgia. Quietens nervous, bronchial and urinary irritationand cough.

Ears: Otalgia with a sense of obstruction. Deafness. Dry, scaly conditionof the meatus (use locally).

Face: Neuralgia affecting the zygoma, temporo-maxillary joint and ear(Meny.), particularly of the left side, with lachrymation, coryza and sensationas if the parts were crushed with tongs. Talking, sneezing and change oftemperature aggravate the pain; also, pressing teeth together. Pain seems tocome in flashes, excited by least movement, occurring periodically at the samehour in the morning and afternoon everyday.

Abdomen: Pain extends deep down, causing contraction of the sphincterani.

Urinary: Constant dribbling. Enuresis. Burning micturition. Increases withpressure in bladder.

Respiratory: Hoarse; voice deep, harsh; sounds like a trumpet; “bassoprofundo.” Cough; worse at night. Asthma. Soreness in pharynx, cough duringsleep.

Extremities: Cramp-like pain in soles, right foot and knee. Lowerextremities feel heavy. Thumb feels numb. Neuralgic pain in the left ankle.Stiffness and soreness of joints of the lower extremities.

Modalities: Worse, change of temperature, talking, sneezing, biting hard(inferior dental nerve); from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Relationship: Compare: Rhus-a., Caust., Plat., Sphingurus maritini (painin zygoma).

Dose: Mullein oil (locally for otalgia and dry, scaly conditions of themeatus. Also for teasing cough at night on lying down. Internally, tincture andlower potencies. Enuresis, five drop doses at night and in the morning).

VERBENA HASTATA(Blue Vervain) Verbe-h.

Affects the skin and nervous system. Nervous depression, weakness,irritation and spasms. Promotes the absorption of blood and allays pain inbruises. Vesicular erysipelas. Passive congestion and intermittent fever. Oneof the remedies for Poison oak. Epilepsy, insomnia, mental exhaustion. Inepilepsy, it brightens up the patient’s mental powers and helps the constipation.

Dose: Single dose of the tincture. In epilepsy must be continued for a longtime. Verbe-h. in the form of a tea as a diuretic drink is used by Vannier (Paris)to aid elimination in tubercular therapy.

VESPA CRABRO(Live Wasp) Vesp.

Skin and female symptoms marked. Indurated feeling. Vasomotorsymptoms of skin and mucous membranes.

Dizzy, better lying on back. Fainting. Numbness and blindness. Nauseaand vomiting, followed by creeping chills from feet upward. Cramping painin bowels. Axillary glands swollen with soreness of upper arms. Perspirationon parts laid on with itching.

Eyes: Erysipelatous inflammation of lids. Chemosis.Face: Painful and swollen (cellutitis). Swelling of mouth and throat, with

violent burning pain.Urinary: Burning with micturition; also itching.Female: Menstruation, preceded by depression, pain, pressure, and

constipation. Left ovary markedly affected, with frequent burning, micturition;sacral pains extending up the back. Erosions around the external os.

Skin: Erythema; intense itching; burning. Boils; stinging and soreness,relieved by bathing with vinegar. Wheals, macules and swellings with burning,stinging and soreness. Erythema multiforme, relieved by bathing with vinegar.

Relationship: Compare: Scorpio europaeus (salivation; strabismus;tetanus); Apis.

Antidote; Semp., locally.Dose: Third to thirtieth potency.

VIBURNUM OPULUS(High Cranberry) Vib.

A general remedy for cramps. Colicky pains in pelvic organs.Superconscious of the internal sexual organs. Female symptoms most important.Often prevents miscarriage. False labor pains. Spasmodic and congestiveaffections of ovarian or uterine origin.

Head: Irritable. Vertigo; sensation as if falling forward. Severe pain inthe temporal region. Sore feeling in the eyeballs.

Stomach: Constant nausea; relieved by eating. No appetite.Abdomen: Sudden cramps and colicy pain. Tender to pressure around

the umbilicus.Rectum: Stools large and hard with cutting pain in the rectum and soreness

of the anus.Urinary: Frequent urging. Copious, pale, light colored urine. Cannot hold

water on coughing or walking.Female: Menses too late, scanty, lasting for a few hours, offensive in

odor, with crampy pains, cramps extend down the thighs (Bell.). Bearing downpains before menses. Ovarian region feels heavy and congested (ovaritis).Aching in sacrum and pubes, with pain in anterior muscles of thighs (Xan.);spasmodic and membranous dysmenorrhea (Borx.). Leucorrhea, excoriating.Smarting and itching of genitals. Faints on attempting to sit up. Frequent andvery early miscarriage, seeming like sterility. Pain from the back to the loinsand womb, worse early morning.

VINCA MINOR(Lesser Periwinkle) Vinc.

A remedy for skin affections, eczema and especially plica polonica; alsofor hemorrhages and diphtheria.

Head: Tearing pain in the vertex, ringing and whistling in ears. Whirlingvertigo, with flickering before eyes. Spots on scalp, oozing moisture, mattinghair together. Corrosive itching of scalp. Bald spots (alopecia). Plica polonica.Irresistible desire to scratch.

Nose: Tip gets red easily. Moist eruptions on the septum. Stoppage ofone nostril. Sores in the nose. Seborrhea of upper lip and base of nose.

Throat: Dysphagia. Ulcers. Frequent hawking. Diphtheria.Female: Excessive menstruation with great weakness. Passive uterine

hemorrhages (Ust., Tril-p., Sec.). Menorrhagia; continuous flow, particularyat climacteric (Lach.). Hemorrhages from fibroids.

Skin: Corrosive itching. Great sensitiveness of the skin, with redness andsoreness from slight rubbing. Eczema of head (crusta lactea) and face; pustules,itching, burning and offensive odor. Hair matted together.

VIOLA ODORATA(Violet) Viol-o.

Has a specific action on the ear. Especially affects dark haired patients;supra-orbital and orbital regions. Rheumatism in the upper parts of the bodyespecially when on the right side. Worm affections in children (Teucr.). Locally,

for pain due to uterine fibroids. Also against snake bites, bee stings. Tensionextends to upper half of face and ears1.

Head: Burning in the forehead. Vertigo; everything in the head seems towhirl around. Heaviness of head, with sensation of weakness in the muscles ofthe nape of neck. Scalp tense; must knit the brows. Tendency to painimmediately above the eyebrows. Throbbing under the eye and temple.Headache across the forehead. Acts upon frontal sinuses. Hysterical attacksin tuberculous patients.

Eyes: Heaviness of lids. Eyeball feels compressed. Flames before theeyes. Myopia. Choroiditis. Illusions of vision; fiery, serpentine circles.

Ears: Shooting in ears. Aversion to music. Roaring and tickling. Deepstitches beneath the ears. Deafness; otorrhea. Ear affections with pain ineyeballs.

Urinary: Milky urine; smells strong. Enuresis in nervous children.Respiratory: Torpor at the end of nose, as if from a blow. Dry, short,

spasmodic cough and dyspnea; worse at daytime. Oppression of chest. Pertussiswith hoarseness. Dyspnea during pregnancy. Difficulty in breathing, anxietyand palpitations, with hysteria.

Extremities: Rheumatism of the deltoid muscle. Trembling of limbs.Pressing pain in right carpal and metacarpal joints (rheumatism) (Ulm.).

Modalities: Worse, cool air.Relationship: Compare: Ulmus (formication in feet, numb, creeping pain

in legs and feet; rheumatic pains above wrists; numbness, tingling and fullsoreness where gastrocnemius gives off its tendon); Chen-a. (ears; serous orbloody effusion in the labyrinth; chronic otitis media; progressive deafness tothe voice, but sensitive to sounds of passing vehicles and other noises; buzzing;absent or deficient bone conduction; consciousness of the ear; hearing betterfor shrill, high pitched sounds than for low ones); Aur., Puls., Sep., Ign., Cina;Caul. (in rheumatism of small joints).

Dose: First to sixth potency.

VIOLA TRICOLOR(Pansy) Viol-t.

The principal use of this remedy is for eczema in childhood and nocturnalemissions accompanied by very vivid dreams.1 A keynote symptoms of Viol-o. is tension. Tension which at times extends to the upper half of face

especially the nose thence to forehead and temples, as far as the ears, alternating with a similarsensation in the occiput and cervical muscles. Tension in the integuments of face (Clarke —Dictionary of Practical Materia Medica).

Head: Heavy pain, pressing outward. Eczema of the scalp (plica plonica,crusta lactea), with swollen glands. Face hot and sweaty after eating.

Throat: Increased phlegm, causes hawking; worse in open air. Dysphagia.Urinary: Copious; disagreeable, cat like odor.Male: Swelling of prepuce, burning in glans (balanitis). Itching.

Involuntary, seminal emissions at stool.Skin: Impetigo. Intolerable itching. Eruptions, particularly over the face

and head with burning, itching; worse at night. Thick scabs, which cracks,exude a tenacious yellow pus. Eczema impetigonoides of the face. Sycosis.

Modalities: Worse, winter; 11 a.m.Relationship: Compare: Rhus-t., Calc., Sep.Dose: Lower potencies.

VIPERA BERUS(The German Viper) Vip.

Viper poisoning causes a temporary increase in reflexes, paresis superveneswith paraplegia of the lower extremities extending upwards. Resembles acuteascending paralysis of Landry (Wells). Has a special action on kidneys andinduces hematuria. Cardiac dropsy.

Indicated in inflammation of veins with great swelling; bursting sensation.Hepatomegaly. Ailments of menopause. Edema of glottis. Polyneuritis,poliomyelitis.

Face: Excessively swollen. Lips and tongue swollen, livid, protruding.Tongue dry, brown, black. Speech difficult.

Abdomen: Violent pain in enlarged liver, with jaundice and fever; extendsto the shoulder and hip.

Extremities: Patient is obliged to keep the extremities elevated, but ifallowed to hang down, it seems as if they would burst and the pain is unbearable(phlegmasia alba dolens) (Aran.). Varicose veins and acute phlebitis. Veinsswollen, sensitive; bursting pain. Severe cramps in lower extremities.

Skin: Livid. Skin peels in large plates. Lymphangioma, boils, carbuncles,with a bursting sensation, relieved by elevating parts.

Relationship: Pelius berus—Adder (prostration and fainting, falteringpulse, skin yellow, pain around the navel. Swelling of arm, tongue, right eye;giddiness, nervousness, faintness, sickness, compression of chest, can notbreathe properly or take a deep breath; aching and stiffness of limbs, jointsstiff, collapsed feeling, great thirst); Ser-ang. (heart and kidney diseases. Failureof compensation and impending asystole).

Dose: Twelfth potency.
