Karen PigottI graduated from Central Michigan University in 1976 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education. In 1996 I received my Master’s Degree in Early Child-hood Education from Oakland University. After receiv-ing my Bachelor’s Degree, I taught elementary Special Education for 4 ½ years at Coleman Elementary in Coleman, MI. My husband took a position with the United States Post Office in Flushing, so we moved our family there. At that time, I accepted a Pre-K teaching position at Donovan Mayotte School in Flint, where I spent 8 ½ years. In 1990, I came to Hartland as a Kin-dergarten teacher at Round Elementary. During my 26 years in Hartland, I have also taught Junior First, Special Education, and 4th grade. My husband, Tom, and I have been married for 41 years and we are cur-rently still living in Flushing. We treasure our three children, Traci, Brett, and Cari. Cari and her husband, Matthew, have given us our adorable grandson, Grady. Brett is our son in heaven and we are blessed with his beautiful wife, Jessica, and our precious grandson, Thomas. As a member of the Hartland Schools family, I enjoyed getting involved in a variety of school and community activities; these included bell ringing for the Salvation Army, “Celebrity Server Night” at Big Boy, marching in the Memorial Day parade, taking my students to the nursing home at Christmas time, and orga-nizing the “Adopt a Family” Christmas donations at Round School. Also, I have held the position of Early Childhood Chairman, served as our school representa-tive for the HEA, and I felt fortunate to have been honored as Hartland’s “Teacher of the Year” in 2001. Throughout my years in Hartland, I have worn several hats including teacher, mom (grandma), doctor, counselor, policewoman, hairdresser, comedian, and program director. All of these have left me with wonderful memories that I will treasure forever. I will never forget the time I was helping one of my little girls. As I was bending down to pick something up off the floor, I noticed that hair was falling to the floor in front of me. When I sat up, I realized that it was MY hair she was cutting!! On another funny note, through the years I have realized how young ones try to imitate our directions exactly. Years ago I developed Bell’s palsy, which affected the muscles in my face. While practicing for a Halloween program, I was teaching them a witch song. I told them to do just as I was doing with the same tone and expression as me. So you can only imagine 25 darling kindergarteners looking at you intently with one eye closed and a crooked mouth singing “I’m a Witch”. I was surprised when I looked out at them and it was as though I was looking in a mirror! Oh, how much joy and laughter they have given me through the years! Hartland Schools has been my home away from home. Since my first day here, I have been amazed by the dedication, collaboration, professionalism, and genuine caring for all children and their needs by every Hartland teacher and staff member. With the guidance of our superintendent, Janet Sifferman, and the Board of Education, Hartland has a strong partnership with our supportive parents and school staff. As the African proverb says “It takes a village to raise a child.” Hartland has been wonderful proof of that saying. Although my teaching career is coming to an end, I will always cherish the children, the families, and the special friends I have met and the wonderful memories we have made together. I will treasure them forever in my heart. Thank you Hartland Schools and families.
Though not an arduous winter, spring in Michigan is always very welcome! And with spring comes the “rush” toward the end of the school year and all of the events and activities that involves.
Graduation is around the corner and our high school students are eagerly anticipating prom night in the coming weeks.
This is a time of high spirits, particularly for our high school students, and I would ask that you, as parents, stress the importance of respon-sibility and caution as our students enter prom and graduation party season. We have much to be thankful for in Hartland.
During these challenging and often difficult times, both in our own county and across the country, Hartland continues to keep its focus on what is important – family, school, community.

HEAVENLY HATS FUNDRAISER
On March 24th, Hartland Middle School held a fundraiser for the “Heavenly Hats Foundation.” “Heavenly Hats” raises money to buy hats for can-cer patients who have lost their hair from chemo-therapy treatments.
The “Experience Based Career Education Pro-gram” and the leadership club, “Students Taking a New Direction”, ran the fundraiser. Students could pay a dollar or more to wear a CRAZY HAT to school for the entire day.
A contest was held during each lunch for a winner of the “Heavenly Hat “contest. The students raised $218.00 to donate. The students learned that one of the most difficult things a cancer patient will face during their battle is the loss of their hair. The slogan of the day was “Wearing a Hat - Gives A Hat.”
HONORS NIGHT/AWARDS ASSEMBLY
Our annual Honors Night/Award Assembly is scheduled for Tuesday, May 31 at 6:30 p.m. at Hartland Middle School.
Students receiving an award will receive an individual invita-tion. We expect the ceremony to last approximately 90 min-utes. Other “Team Awards” will be given on the last day of school.

Round Elementary News 810.626.2800Dotty Selix, Principal
We have had a tremendous school year so far at Round Elementary. Spring always brings a lot of excitement and many great activities. The Round PTO sponsored the annual auction with a twist.
Attendees enjoyed the Round Rocks Lipsinc contest featuring Round Elemen-tary Teachers performing a favorite choreographed tune. In addition, guests won many exciting prizes, classroom baskets, and had an opportunity to bid on dozens of amazing silent auction items. It was a night of great comradery and a fun evening with the Round School Family.
We would like to thank the many sponsors that donated items for the auction and to the PTO for organizing this memorable event. Also thank you to the PTO board and chairpersons who planned the event, and the numerous volun-teers who built the stage, prepared the classroom baskets, helped with setup/cleanup, refreshments, and ticket sales. We would also like to send a special thank you to the Round Elementary student judges Maddy Ciot, Will Darrish, Nathan Bergkoetter, Lindsay Shaw and Max Antonishek. It was tough to judge the winning performance, but they did a great job!
The event was a huge success! The Round School Family raised over $9,000.00 for students and teachers. It was a great night for Round Elementary. We wish everyone a happy spring!

LEGACY High School News 810.626.2104Samantha Wakefield, Lead Teacher
On March 16, 2016 Mr. James Gray, owner/operator of SFS (Scorpion Fight-ing System) Gym in Howell, Michigan, brought members of the SFS team to Legacy High School to present their unique motivational message and wisdom to our students and staff. Mr. Gray and his team are champion belt holders in several categories of the professional mixed martial arts (MMA) sport. They passed along their personal and professional experiences to the students with the encouragement to find and live their lives with a “passion”.
This is the third consecutive year that Mr. Gray and members of his team have graciously donated their time to our school and the students. Mr. Gray states that he has a personal desire to give back to young people and the community some of the riches that he’s been given in his life. And of course, there was also a demonstration of self-defense that everyone was welcome to participate in. Thank you Mr. Gray and the SFS team for all you do for our school and com-munity. Above: Students at LEGACY continued to be involved with the community. The special
needs seniors visit once a month and do various science projects with students and their teacher, Cari Van Hoorelbeke. The seniors also visit Scott Lemay and his physical educa-tion classes once a month and participate in various activities. The students and seniors alike enjoy their time together and look forward to monthly visits.

Troop 381 Honors Eagle Scout Zachary Mason
Family, friends and fellow Scouts and leaders of Boy Scout Troop #381 celebrated the achievement of Eagle Scout Zachary Mason. Zack’s Eagle Court of Honor was held on Saturday, April 2nd, 2016 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Deerfield Town-ship.
Chartered Organization Representative John Parzuchowski welcomed those in attendance and introduced Troop Chaplain and Assistant Scoutmas-ter Jim Bauer who delivered the Invocation. Fellow Scouts David Dunville, Robert McCollum, Liam McMullen, and Adam Parzuchowski served as Hon-or Guard, led by Senior Patrol Leader Nik Masters. Troop #381’s Training Chairman, Tom McMullen, presented the Trial to Eagle. The Significance of the Eagle Rank was explained by Scoutmaster Ron Trosin II. Zack’s Eagle Mentor and Assistant Scoutmas-ter Mike Peterson delivered the Charge to Eagle, administered the Eagle Promise and presented Zack with his Eagle Rank Award. Zack presented his parents, Al and Terry Tipton, with Eagle parents’ pins and his Eagle Mentor, Mike Peterson, was given an Eagle Mentor pin. County Commissioner Dave Domas and Sheriff Bob Bezotte each awarded Zack with a plaque honoring his service. State Representative Hank Vaupel and Mary Helfman from Senator Joe Hune’s office presented Zack with a Special Trib-ute. Tom McMullen, who remembers Zack as a Cub Scout, read letters from Governor Rick Snyder and Senator Gary Peters, selected from several letters of commendation received in recognition of Zack’s achievement of the rank of Eagle Scout. Scoutmaster Ron Trosin shared the Legend of Eagle Mountain and invited Zack to share his own comments following a slideshow highlighting his Scouting career. After the closing flag ceremony, Jim Bauer delivered the Benediction and John Parzuchowski made clos-ing remarks. Guests joined together in the basement for a luncheon reception hosted by Zack’s parents. His Eagle workbook along with memorabilia from his years in Cub and Boy Scouting were on display along with letters of Commendation from Governor Rick Snyder, Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters, State Representative Hank Vaupel and State Senator Joe Hune.
Zack selected, as his Eagle Scout Service Project, to manage the building and installa-tion of an observation platform in the Deerfield Hills Nature Area in Deerfield Town-ship. Boy Scout Troop #381 congratulates Zack Mason on earning the rank of Eagle Scout!

My name is Mary Cafmeyer and I have been on the Cromaine Library Board of Trustees since 2010. There was a vacancy on the board in 2010 and I saw the “want ad” posted. Since I am a huge library supporter and especially love Cromaine I thought, “Why not?” I have never regretted my decision. The people (staff, other trustees and patrons) are all wonderful and welcoming.
We moved to Tyrone Township in the year 2000 and immediately began using the library for the programs it offered, especially story time for my kids (then ages 5 and 1 ½), summer reading programs, summer concert series and drive-in movies just to name a few. Now, my sons are 21 and 17 and have both served as summer volunteers.Cromaine has so much to offer the community, from babies to senior citizens. If they don’t have something you’re looking for, they will get it for you. From books and magazines to CDs and DVDs. And for the technophiles, you can get books sent directly to your Kindle, Nook, iphone, etc. What’s not to like?Cromaine is truly the hidden gem of our community.
Library Closings:The library will be closed from 9 am to 1 pm on May 13
for a staff in-service. The Village will open at 1 pm.The library will be closed Saturday, May 28 through

Community NEWSDick and Barbara Krueger
2016 Hartland Memorial Day Parade Grand MarshallsRichard (Dick) and Barbara Krueger have been residents of Hartland for 29 years. Several events, decades ago, worked to the good fortune of the Hartland Community. Barbara grew up in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. She attended Fresno State College, and taught elemen-tary school for several years in California. Barbara then moved to Madison Wis-consin, where she continued teaching. A housemate took her home for Thanksgiv-ing break where she was introduced to Dick, a cousin of that housemate. Dick grew up in Sheboygan Wisconsin, attended General Motors Institute (now known as Kettering University) and enjoyed a 48 year career with the General Motors Corporation. In 1987 they moved from Southfield Michigan to Hartland, and both became involved with Community Council in 1995. They credit Steve As-senmacher, former Director of Community Education and active Community Council member, for getting them involved with Community Council. It is for-tunate that Community Council does not have a term limits provision, as Dick served as President of the Council for 15 years. Combined, Dick and Barbara have unselfishly served the Hartland Community in numerous capacities for over 40 years! Barbara for a number of years has been very active in historic preser-vation. Not only is she a stained glass artist and stained glass historian, she has extensively researched Hartland houses for an architecture class she attended at Eastern Michigan University. She has provided walking tours of Hartland Village for elementary school classes along with tours of the cemetery. This eventually led to the Sunday evening program the day prior to Memorial Day at the cemetery. Many of the students from Hartland High School history classes participate in that annual activity. Dick has also been actively involved with the Cromaine Planning Committee for the past nine years. They both so routinely take care of details for various community events that it is easy to forget the countless hours they devote to Hartland. From making sure the banners in the Village are changed each season, to making sure roads are closed for events like the parade and Heritage Days with the proper authorities, to putting together the wonderful Memorial Day booklet. Dick and Barbara- thank you for all you do and have done for the Harland Community. You deserve to lead the 2016 Memorial Day Parade as the Grand Marshalls. And thank you to that Madison Wisconsin housemate for the chain of events so many years ago.

Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil WarMemorial Day Ceremony
On Memorial Day morning, the Livingston Coun-ty Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Camp #120 will recreate the actual GAR ceremony for the Civil War dead of Hartland. This will take place at the Smith-Griswold Cemetery on the east side of Cullen Road at 9AM. The focus will be on the members of the Griswold family that are buried there, but the 30 minute ceremony will also cover a brief history of H Battery, First Michigan Light Artillery, and the many Hartland boys who served in that Battery in its many battles.
The ceremony will be conducted just as it was when the GAR buried one of their fellow Civil War Veterans did 100 years ago. Hartland His-tory Club will be there in support and members of other SOUV camps from all over the state have been invited.
The purpose of the Sons of Union Veterans is to educate the public about the veterans and American History and therefore the public are encouraged to attend. The emphasis for the ceremony is reflection on and honoring of those who served our country.

Struggling Student Now Gets A’s & B’s - Thanks to Vision Therapy! “By first grade, Davis was significantly behind. He couldn’t keep up or follow directions. His teacher and a special education teacher expressed significant concerns regarding his inability to recall and remember.” “I brought Davis to his pediatrician. The meeting with his doctor did not go well. I was told to lower my expectations. He would never be ‘fixed’. We went to Dr. Doud’s the next day and I broke down crying as I told him what his doctor had stated. I let him know - I knew my little boy was intelligent. He just couldn’t get it out.” “Dr. Doud tested Davis’ vision and discovered that his vision was significantly delayed in several areas. He not only gave me hope - which at that point was all I wanted, but a plan to assist Davis.” After vision therapy, “Davis improved so significantly that at the end of second grade, I was told not to let the 3rd grade teachers know anything was wrong with his ability. He had all A’s and B’s. He was able to keep up and follow directions. His visual memory was 14% when we started vision therapy. It is now near 90%.”
“I am so pleased and cry at the thought of how far he has come. It truly is overwhelming to think of what would have happened to Davis if we would have listened to his pediatri-cian, lowered expectations and accepted this situation, Davis would have failed at school and in life.” We can help—call today!
