’n Man is met ’n koeël in sy lyf uit die hos-pitaal ontslaan nadat hy die naweek in De Wildt, in die noorde van Pretoria, geskiet is.

Carel van der Merwe (47) se skoonsuster Elanie van der Merwe vertel dat die koeël onder sy longe vasgesteek het.

’n Rower wat sy gesig agter ’n spook-masker weggesteek het, het rustig saam met sy medepligtige weggeloop nadat hy Van der Merwe twee keer geskiet het.

deur twee rowers.Van der Merwe was te voet op pad na

sy huis. Naby die woning van Elanie en sy broer Ben het twee fi gure skielik sy aandag trek.

“Carel was besig om ’n boodskap vir sy suster op sy selfoon te tik. Hy het pas die boodskap gestuur toe hy opkyk en die mans reg voor hom sien staan.”

Elanie sê die een man het ’n masker aangehad, soortgelyk aan dié wat in die rillerfi lm Scream te sien is.

“Dit was tog so vreemd… gewoonlik dra skurke net balaklavas of sykouse. Ek weet

nie of die doel van sy masker was om mense nog meer vreesbevange te laat voel nie.”

Elanie sê die “Scream-spook” het ’n vuurwapen teen Van der Merwe se voorkop tussen sy oë gedruk.

Van der Merwe het die man se hand, weggeklap.

“Hy het die kans gewaag om homself te red. As hy nie die vuurwapen weggeklap het nie, is ek seker hulle sou hom doodgeskiet het,” sê Elanie.

Sy sê die gewapende man het die sneller toe twee keer getrek.

“Die eerste keer het die wapen geweier,

maar toe trek hy die sneller weer en die koeël het net-net Carel se kop gemis. Ons vermoed Carel het sy rug na die ver dagte gedraai toe die skoot afgegaan het.”

Van der Merwe het glo nie besef hy is gewond nie.

Die rowers het sy selfoon by hom afge-neem.

Voordat die gemaskerde man sy vuur-wapen kon herlaai, het Van der Merwe sy aanvallers van sy “slap chips” aangebied.

Tshwane metro has come in at a disappoin-ting 65th place in an independent survey of the best-run municipalities of the country.

Of the 234 municipalities, Western Cape accounted for 15 of the top 20 and the worst are in former apartheid homelands.

The survey was done by an independent agency, Good Governance Africa.

It used data from various offi cial sources such as 2011 census, Statistics SA, Treasury, Gaffney’s local government yearbook (2013-2015), auditor-general reports and the extended public works programme.

Municipalities were scored on 15 dif-ferent criteria in three performance areas: administration, economic development and service delivery.

According to the survey report, of the 15 Western Cape municipalities in the top 20, four were run by the ANC, eight by the DA Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa and Gauteng premier David Makhura recently visited resi-

Van der Merwe is hospitaal toe gehaas waar daar gevind is dat ’n koeël deur sy nek getrek het en onder sy longe beland het.

Die koeël het hom regs van sy rugwerwel getref, sy hart gemis, die een long beskadig en in sy sy vasgesteek, vertel Elanie.

“Die dokters het gesê hulle gaan nie die koeël verwyder waar dit nou sit nie. Dit sou te gevaarlik wees.”

Die aanval op Van der Merwe is deur twee soortgelyke voorvalle in dieselfde omgewing voorafgegaan.

Daar word vermoed dat dieselfde twee gewapende mans betrokke was.

’n Paar uur voor die jongste skietvoorval, vertel Elanie, was daar ’n noodoproep op die omgewing se nood-radionetwerk.

’n Bejaarde egpaar het die buurtwag in kennis gestel van twee gewapende mans wat by hul huis propeer inbreek het.

Die Els-egpaar, vertel Elanie, bly naby hulle en sê ’n buurman het op die nood-oproep gereageer en waarskuwingskote gevuur om die boewe af te skrik.

Elanie sê die verdagtes is daarna na die huis van ’n plaaswerker.

“Hulle het die deur van die huis afgebreek en die huis deursoek,” sê sy. “Gelukkig kon hulle nie iets van waarde daar wegdra nie.”

Elanie vermoed dat die rowers toe, terug op die pad, paaie met Van der Merwe gekruis het.

“Die honde in die omgewing het mal gegaan en vreeslik geblaf, maar Carel het gedink dit is vir hom in die pad wat hulle so blaf.”

Die drie voorvalle is by die Mmakau-polisie aangemeld.

Results were published in Good Govern-ance Africa journal, Africa in Fact.

Municipalities ranked second to eighth are all DA-led.

Northern Cape has three municipalities in the top 20, Emthanjeni and Richtersveld, both held by the ANC, and Hantam, which is run by a DA-COPE coalition.

The only other province with municipali-ties in the top 20 is the Free State, represen-ted by Metsimahalo and Dihlabeng, both held by the ANC.

The top three performing municipalities are Swellendam (DA-African Christian Democratic Party coalition), Hessequa (DA) and Bergrivier (DA).

According to the report, the top three municipalities performed particularly well in the economic development indicator – un-employment and poverty – with all making the top 10 in each. They also ranked well in the service delivery indicator – electricity – where all made the top 20.

These municipalities performed well in the two administration indicators – munici-pal capacity and fi nancial soundness.

But they did poorly in the education indi-cator with Hessequa ranking 96th, Bergrivier 112th and Swellendam 143rd.

South Africa’s worst performing munici-

pality is Mbizina, followed by Ntabankulu, both in Eastern Cape and then Ntambanana in KwaZulu-Natal.

In fact Eastern Cape accounts for 12 of the 20 worst performing municipalities and KZN six. Greater Tubatse, in Limpopo, and Greater Taung in North West, complete the bottom 20 list. All 20 are led by the ANC.

There was no discernible pattern with regard to the third indicator, reporting compliance, where some of the lowly ranked municipalities – among them Big Five False

Bay in KZN and Mbashe in Eastern Cape – scored top ratings yet remaining in the bottom 20 overall.

“Taken as a whole, the ranking commu-nicates the urgency with which resources need to be invested in service delivery in the lower-ranked municipalities,” the agency said.

It added that perhaps, equally important would be to ensure social and economic development were fast-tracked, particularly in impoverished and underdeveloped areas.

A whopping three million people registered to vote for the fi rst time or to alter their registration details at the weekend.

The Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) said the number was more than double that recorded during the fi rst registration weekend for the previous Municipal Elec-tions in 2011 and a 23% increase to the 2014 National and Provincial Elections.

Gauteng (156 331 or 22.5%) and Kwazu-lu-Natal (166 112 or 24%) together account-ed for almost half of all new registrations.

Of the 3 097 194 voters who visited voting stations this weekend: ·

- 692 730 were new registrations;· - 1 086 958 were re-registrations in differ-

ent voting districts; and- 1 317 506 visited to confi rm and update

their registration in the same voting district“Of the new registrations, 544 552

(78.6%) were under 30 years old. This means that there has been a signifi cant response by young persons to the call to register.

“The Commission is grateful for this response,” the IEC said in a statement.

Almost 54% of the new registrations were women.

“This trend is applies to all provinces except the Northern Cape where there is al-most a 50/50 split between men and women in respect of new registrations.”

In terms of overall provincial activity, KwaZulu-Natal had the highest overall reg-istration activity with 864 295 interactions recorded (approximately 28% of the national total) followed by Gauteng (526 580) and the Eastern Cape (519 674) which each con-tributed 17% of the total activity, according to the commission.

“The Electoral Commission is especially pleased with the response to the call for registered voters to use the opportunity to update their address details at their voting station.

“More than 1.3 million registered voters used the weekend to confi rm their registra-tion and update their details.”

The Commission urged all eligible voters who have still not registered to ensure they do not miss the fi nal registration weekend which will take place on 9 and 10 April.

“This will be the last opportunity for voters to register and update their regis-tration particulars at their voting station. Registration is on-going at the local IEC offi ce during offi ce hours Monday to Friday until the voters’ roll for the 2016 Municipal Elections closes on the day the elections are proclaimed.”

A fi nal registration weekend was also announced for 9 and 10 April 2016 when all voting stations will again be open from 08:00 to 17:00.

No arrests have been made after a woman was shot and wounded outside a popular bar on a smallholding in Pretoria North last Friday.

Police spokesperson Captain Rheineth Motlana said three men shot the 50-year-old woman around 01:00.

This apparently happened when the woman went to lock the entrance gate.

“The victim was waiting for her worker

to close the gate when three unknown males came running from the bushes and pointed a fi rearm at her. She started to drive off, but was shot in the body.”

Landsberg said the shooting happened in Berg Avenue.

A shocked neighbour who wanted to remain anonymous told Rekord that she heard the gunshots as she was reading in bed.

“I asked my husband to turn off the lights. When I looked through the curtains of my window I could see the men and it looked like they were fi ghting about something.”

She phoned the police and they arrived about 30 minutes later.

She said this was not the fi rst time she noticed strange activities in the area.

“About a month ago I saw fi ve guys walking around up and down the street. It looked like they were stealing. They wore

hats and balaclavas and were carrying plastic bags.

Motlane said police were investigating.He urged anyone with information on

the matter to call Akasia police on 012-541-1005.

“Die bevelvoerder en sy bestuur neem kennis van onbevredigende dienslewering deur sommige lede van Sinoville-polisie,” sê polisiewoordvoerder, adjudant-offi sier Johan van Dyk.

“Hy bevestig dat professionele diensle-wering aan inwoners nie onderhandelbaar is nie. Kolonel Kekana sê altyd ‘ons inwoners se veiligheid en klagtes is ons prioriteit en ons sal nie ons gemeenskap faal nie’.”

“Hy het ’n oop-deur-beleid wanneer dit kom by ons mense in die Sinoville-omge-wing,” sê Van Dyk.

A woman was reported missing after she was last seen in the Pretoria CBD on Mon-day afternoon.

Erika Claassens (51) from Sinoville was reportedly on her way from work to see a doctor when she disappeared.

Pink Ladies organisation spokesperson Dessie Rechner said it was not known what Erika was wearing at the time of her disap-pearance.

“She has light brown hair, brown eyes and weighs about 83kg. She’s 1.65m tall.”

Sinoville police could not provide more information.

Gauteng’s budget was met with mixed feel-ings this week, but the overall sentiment was positive.

Delivering her R103 billion provincial budget in the Legislature on Tuesday, MEC Barbara Creecy announced a six percent increase from last year’s budget, with the lion’s share going to education and health.

Creecy’s budget was regarded as balanced and positive by most opposition parties, only the EFF reacted negatively, saying more money should have been spent on voter education.

The provincial budget was also welcomed by Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa, who said it demonstrated without a doubt the commitment of the province to support

Gauteng budget met with mixed feelingsand consolidate the numerous programmes which had been piloted and conceived in the capital city in the last three years.

“Whilst we join the MEC in lamenting the projected provincial economy growth of 1.2 % in 2015, we are equally optimistic that our interventions and programmes should be able to cushion us from the impact of the near-recession era we are skirting,” Ramok-gopa said.

The Tshwane mayor highlighted Creecy’s announcement of the investment in human settlements and the commitment to further develop the Nellmapius/Mamelodi node.

“The upgrading and dualising of Solomon Mahlangu Drive from the N4 to Mamelodi, fi ts squarely with our vision of redevelop-ing the eastern node of our city, taking advantage of the growth of the N4 Corridor as a catalyst for the growth of the eastern capital.”

“True to our claim that Tshwane metro remains the education and knowledge hub of the country and research oasis for Gauteng,

we welcome the allocation of resources for, among other, the development of the Gau-teng Automotive Learning Centre,” Ramok-gopa said

He added that the development of the Biosciences Park facility at the Tshwane In-novation Centre and the Hammanskraal and Mabopane Skill Centres was also welcomed.

“The recapitalisation of the centres will go a long way in preparing our youth for their role in society and in the growth of South Africa’s capital city” Ramokgopa said.

As Tshwane continued to battle the evil of drug abuse - particularly nyaope - the mayor said the city was inspired by the allocations for a provincial anti-drug campaign.

He said to take advantage of this interven-tion, he would, during the presentation of the State of Capital Address in April, announce an additional amount to the city’s R50m budget for its anti-nyaope programme, an additional commitment to match the provin-cial allocation.

Another reserve threatenedStephané Bothma

The commercial development of yet another nature reserve in Pretoria – this time the Wonderboom reserve – is on the cards.

The Gauteng sports, recreation, arts and culture department confi rmed that it had commissioned an environmental impact study into the possibility of doing some developments to the Wonderboom nature reserve.

It was reported as saying that one of the proposals for the reserve had been the establishment of a cable car service taking visitors to and from the Wonderboom Junc-tion to the Wonderboom Fort.

There were also plans to build additional chalets to allow overnight stays.

However, grave concern about the de-velopment was expressed by Pieter Saun-ders, chairman of the Magaliesberg Raptor Research Project.

He is also the project coordinator of the Wonderboom Urban Verreaux’s Eagle project.

“We have been notifi ed by one of the persons who is doing a preliminary assess-ment that the department now has plans for Wonderboom that are similar to the plans it had for Groenkloof nature reserve,” Saun-ders said in a statement.

“All parties involved have been sworn to secrecy, being told they do not want a repeat of the fi asco that happened with Groen-kloof,” he said.

“My understanding is that the depart-ment is either looking to build a hotel and function venue with cable car, or build various chalets with a function venue and cable car.”

He said plans were also underway to re-habilitate the Wonderboom Fort and rebuild it to look like Fort Klapperkop and Fort Skanskop.

“Not only is this reserve the nesting ground for the Verreaux’s Eagle (upgraded from species of least concern in 2002 to vulnerable in 2016 ) in Tshwane, but various other endangered species also make this their home,” he said.

Saunders said the pair of eagles was the most urbanised in the world.

With the Wonderboom being approxi-mately two square kilometres big, there was no way that any building or construction activities would not be detrimental to fi rstly the various species’ foraging behaviour, he said.

Saunders said it would be detrimental to the availability of prey (more hiding places for prey or their eradication by pest control).

“Their various breeding behaviour will be impacted by the increased human presence.”

Free Wi-Fi has brought drugs and noise for a Pretoria North couple and a primary school.

They exist near a Tshwane Wi-Fi hot-spot in the north, which is a drawcard for scores of young people.

“They come and use drugs here, smok-ing dagga and nyaope,” said Paul Kortman and his wife.

He claimed to have also seen people making drug deliveries. “There is no safety and we have called the police.”

The couple claimed the police only asked the drug users to quieten down.

Kortman said one of his neighbours took matters into his own hands and shot at the drug users with his paintball gun.

Kortman said the hotspot did not seem to serve pupils in Laerskool Rachel de Beer very well.

Ronel Krynauw, a teacher from the school, said the Wi-Fi hotspot was of no use to the school.

“It is out of our range, and the only way you can have access to it is if you sit on the corner of Wonderboom and Deetleff streets.”

Krynauw complained the people using the spot tended to leave a mess behind.

“Alcohol bottles are lying around, they leave the area messy and we have to clean up after them.”

Mayoral spokesperson Blessing Manale said the metro had received complaints of this nature in the past.

“The metro is also looking into im-proving the Wi-Fi hotspot sites in open public areas by including better lighting, CCTV camera feeds, installation of street furniture, deployment of metro police and increased foot patrols at the sites,” he said.

“Until the above is achieved, we urge

all Wi-Fi hotspot users to take precautions, walk in groups and not use the service un-til late, and customise the “Tobetsa” crime reporting app to enable them to report such with ease and quicker response.”

He said the executive mayor announced during his state-of-the-capital address that by the end of 2016, every citizen of Tshwane would be within a walking dis-tance of free Wi-Fi hotspot areas.

“The City’s vision is to eventually provide free Wi-Fi connectivity in every street, at every corner and to every house-hold in the capital city. We are well on our way towards tangibly realising this vision” Manale said. Pretoria North police could not be reached for comment by the time of transmitting this report.

I was following a group online that asks the question: Why is there still so much crime in South Africa with all the available technology?

One reason is that homeowners, busi-

nesses and property managers do not have adequate control of their security. They need a thorough risk assessment.

More than 8 000 athletes took part in the 39th annual Medihelp Sunrise Monster on Saturday morning.

The event was held at Harlequins Club and started at 06:00.

Participants took part in the 32km, 10km and 5km fun-run routes of which all of them meandered through the Groenkloof nature reserve, up and down the hills of Monument Park.

Medihelp principal offi cer, Heyn van Rooyen said the run has become a must-do race for many professional athletes looking for a challenge.

The race is famous for being the biggest 10km road race in Gauteng North and as one of the best conditioning races for the Comrades marathon.

“Even though the race is renowned for its steep climbs and down hills, it can be conquered if you train for it in advance with your club,” said Van Rooyen.

He concluded that Medihelp Sunrise Monster focuses on healthy habits, preventa-tive care and sharing memories with loved ones.

The biggest pumpkin north of Pretoria has got Fruit & Veg customers staring in awe.

Food Lover’s Market Montana is showcasing the massive squash which will be entered into the Goliat van Gat competition this coming weekend.

The owner of the giant vegetable is a local resident Hugo le Roux, who says growing pumpkins is a hobby of his.

Le Roux says his dream is to grow the largest pumpkin in South Africa, and hopes the recently-harvested one will shatter some records.

“I have been an agronomist and ‘seeds man’ my whole life and I fi nd it fun to push the boundaries in agriculture.”

Le Roux was inspired by the world record holder Beni Meier, who grew a staggering pumpkin of 1 050kg.

He says he hopes to surpass the South

African record currently held by Pinkie Swart of Heidelberg whose pumpkin weighed in at 497kg.

Le Roux has previously entered com-petitions with pumpkins weighing 328kg and 335kg, and has won the Standard Bank and the Goliat van Gat competitions for growing massive pumpkins.

Steven Mulder from Food Lover’s Market Montana said Le Roux’s latest harvest was very impressive.

“This pumpkin took 150 days to grow and had to be lifted with a forklift because of its massive size and weight,” said Mulder. The giant on display is guarded by security as it remains vital for the pumpkin not to be damaged before its weigh-in on 12 March.

After the competition, the pumpkin will be chopped up and donated to old age homes and other charities for a pumpkin feast.

Pivotal property fund has approved the R700 million transformation of Wonder-boom Junction Shopping Centre into a more sophisticated mall with a much greater tenant offering for a more reward-ing and comparative retail environment is being awaited with anticipation.

Traditionally an open air convenience mall, Wonderboom Junction will emerge as one of the top shopping destinations in the north of Pretoria, yet it will stay true to the core fundamentals that have appealed to the core clientele for more than eight years.

The extension and refurbishment of the mall is being undertaken by Abland, one of the best known and trusted property development companies in Tshwane who promised more brands, more shopping and more fun at Wonderboom Junction once the extensive upgrades are completed.

Expressing great excitement about the expanded tenant base, Abland development manager Shaun Welgemoed - head of Retail Developments said discussions were well progressed with several key national retailers to enlarge and upgrade their offerings at Wonderboom Junction.

“In addition to this, the expansion also brings the opportunity to include a secondary food grocer to complement the existing Pick n Pay.

Discussions are almost fi nalized with Pick n Pay which will see them upgrading the existing store to their new generation offering and ensure that Wonderboom Junction has the latest and best offering available,” Welgemoed said.

Several new brands were also being included in the expansion to strengthen

the fashion component of the centre with exciting young brands being introduced to appeal to a wider consumer base, he added.

The development will take about two and a half years to complete and the brand new Wonderboom Junction is expected to open its doors in the fi rst quarter of 2018.

Existing parking will be retained throughout the redevelopment period however certain sections thereof will be decommissioned for short periods of time to allow for upgrades.

During the redevelopment phase, the basement parking will however be free of charge.

Once completed, Wonderboom Junction will have a whopping 2 900 parking bays - almost double the existing bays provided.

Welgemoed expressed great excitement at the planned enhancements to increase the family-focused areas and activities at Wonderboom Junction, from the inclusion of additional well known national eateries to activation of the Apies River by introducing MTB and trail running tracks to complement the existing and well supported kids play area.

The size of centre will increase from existing 38 000m² to approx. 60 000m² and boast approx. 125 stores on completion.

Centre manager Esta Stieler is adamant that shoppers should not be deterred by the upgrades and that Wonderboom Junction will do their utmost to inform and facilitate shoppers during this time.

Checklist for landlordsWhether you are an investor or a home-owner renting out a property, there is more to being a landlord than collecting a rental cheque each month.

Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO of RE/MAX, Southern Africa, says let-ting out a property can often be an involved process. It can demand a reasonable amount of time, depending on the circumstances.

“Although the idea of becoming a landlord and earning some extra money can be an alluring endeavour, it is vital that the owner of the property be fully prepared for the responsibilities of a landlord,” says Goslett.

He provides fi rst-time and potential land-lords with key elements to consider when entering the property rental business:

Property is a long-term investmentWhile a rental property may pay for itself

over the long term, initially the landlord will probably have to put in money to cover all the costs of owning the property. It is unlikely that the rent amount will cover all the costs involved.

Whether it is a section of the bond repay-ment or maintenance costs, a landlord will more than likely have to put money into the property each month.

Know the numbersWhen it comes to owning a property, the

bond repayment is not the only expense. Potential landlords need to consider aspects such as general maintenance, insurance, rates and taxes and possibly the services of an attorney or a professional rental agent.

It is advisable to set aside a contingency fund in order to deal with the upkeep of the property, along with any other unforeseen circumstances or repairs. By knowing the numbers and budgeting for expenditure, the landlord will be able to allocate money ap-propriately.

Have a checklistA checklist is useful when tenants move

in or out. It should include all items the landlord would need to discuss with the ten-ant when handing over the keys.

Check that the following is in working condition: stove, all the lights and electrical points and geyser(s).

Also check that there are not any leaks or damp and that gutters are unclogged and clear of debris.

Ensure contracts are properly drawn upTo avoid any misunderstandings, all stip-

ulations should be clearly stated in a detailed contract. The more detailed the contract, the smoother the rental will be. Aspects that should be included are acceptable tenant behaviour, breakage costs, preferred method of payment and date for the rental payment.

Leotlela stands a good chance to qualify for Rio The dreams of most young school athletes to represent South Africa at the Olympic Games will have to remain just that for the moment.

But there is one exception.Tlotliso (Gift) Leotlela, a

grade 12 pupil at TuksSport High School, has a realistic chance of qualifying for the Games in Rio.

Last year, the 17-year-old athlete gave notice of what could be expected when he won the 100m at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa in a time of 10.20s.

His time was merely 0.01s slower than the 10.19 run by Japan’s Yoshihide Kiryu in No-vember 2012, which is listed on the IAAF rankings as the fastest time ever run by a youth athlete.

The fact that his winning time was merely 0.04s slower than the qualifi cation standard for the Olympic Games in Rio is even more important.

Leotlela also won the 200m at the Youth Games in a time of 20.56s. If it had not been for a wind of 2.6m/s from behind, this would have been a new South African youth record as well.

It is interesting to note that the Olympic qualifi cation stand-ard for the 200m is 20.50s.

Hennie Kriel, his Tuks/hpc coach, has no doubt Leotlela has the ability to qualify for the Games.

During a league meeting at Pilditch this past Saturday he won the 100m in 10.46s.

“Tlotliso was disappointed with his time but he should learn that in athletics you do not always get to run the times you expect. You have to learn to deal with the disappointments. The really fast times usually happen when you least expect it,” said Kriel.

Despite Kriel’s expectations, he made it clear they are not go-

ing to become obsessed with the Olympic Games.

Another big goal for Tlotliso will be to win a medal at the IAAF u.20 World Champion-ships in Poland.

“It’s important to remember that although Tlotliso has run a time of 10.20s his second best 100m time is only 10.40s. The challenge at the moment is to get him to consis tently run times of 10.20s and faster,” said Kriel.

“If he could end the season running 10.10s I would be more than satisfi ed because it will prove he is on track to run a sub-10s race. If not this year, he will defi nite ly do so next year.”

Asked what made Leotlela such a talented sprinter, Kriel said he had studied the tech-niques of various top sprinters in great detail in an attempt to fi nd out what made them good.

“The top speed achieved by an athlete such as Usain Bolt is unnatural. A young athlete needs to be specifi cally trained to emu-late Bolt’s technique. The most natural sprinter is defi nitely Asafa Powell. His sprinting technique is nearly faultless. Gift is an athlete in the same mould as Powell and that is what makes it so exciting to coach him.”

To get Leotlela to talk about his fl eet-footed exploits is a tough challenge. He strictly adheres to the advice once given to him by Wayde van Niekerk during an informal chat.

“Be humble. Never allow success to go to your head, be-cause you never know what will happen in your next race,” Van Niekerk had told the youngster.

Leotlela said Van Niekerk, Jobodwana, Simbine and Bruyntjies were his heroes.

“I especially look up to Wayde. We are both from the Free State so, apart from being sprinters, we have something else in common,” he said.

Boksaanhangers sal bly wees om te hoor dat daar nou ’n tweede promotor is wat profes-sionele boks terug na Pretoria wil bring.

Op Donderdag 17 Maart sal agt profes-sionele gevegte onder die vaandel van The Arena boxing events en Halliday Promo-tions in die Barnyard-teater in die ooste van Pretoria plaasvind.

Die dryfkrag agter die toernooi is Pretoria se gewese junior swaargewig wêreldkam-pioen, Sebastiaan Rothmann.

’n Groot deel van die boksers wat deel-neem, kom ook uit sy gimnasium.

Rothmann het aan Rekord gesê dat te veel jong boksers se loopbane skade ly omdat hulle na té min amateurgevegte aan die diep-kant van die professionele arena ingegooi word en dan nie kan oorleef nie.

Hulle het te min ervaring en hul staat van ontwikkeling as boksers is nog nie goed genoeg om byvoorbeeld in ’n groot geveg betrokke te raak wat op TV vertoon word nie.

Rothmann wil gereeld soortgelyke toernooie aanbied met gevegte van net vier rondes.

Hy hoop om baie boksliefhebbers na die toernooie te lok, sodat die boksers se vermoë om voor baie mense te boks saam met hul fi sieke vermoëns sal ontwikkel.

Rothmann is opgewonde oor die jong Cowin Ray, wat uit sy gimnasium kom, se vertoning by die toernooi.

Daar is ook ander name soos Martin Prinsloo, Jay-Jay Scheepers, Len van Nieuwenhuizen, Hendri Jansen, Johan Bas-son, Robbie Coetzee, Tokkie van den Berg,

Sebastiaan Rothmann, gewese junior swaargewig-wêreldkampioen in die IBO en WBU, aan die werk met een van sy jong boksers in sy gimnasium by Loftus Versfeld.

Scary! This is perhaps the best way to de-scribe Akani Simbine’s South African record breaking performance on Tuesday night in the 100m when he won in 9.96s at the ASA Night Series Meeting at Pilditch.

Simbine’s time is 0.01s faster than the South African record of 9.97s he shared with Henricho Bruintjies.

Why scary comes into play is because before his race Simbine totally downplayed his chances of running a fast time.

He made it sound like it was going to be a nice season’s opener but then he went on to sprung a major surprise.

In fairness Simbine admitted afterwards he surprised himself.

“The time I ran does not feel real, espe-cially since it is still so early in the season. I got to admit that I am surprised by the shape I am in. Werner, my coach, and I have not really even started to do speed work.”

In 2014 Simon Magakwe became the fi rst South African sprinter to break 10s in the 100m in a local meeting.

“It is amazing that I can be the second South African to show local fans how a sub-10s race is run. I hope it won’t be the last

time before the South African Champion-ships in Stellenbosch that I do so.”

It might just happen over the week-end when he competes in the 100m at the Gauteng North championships on the same track. Actually it could be quite an exciting showdown because Bruintjies will also be competing in the 100m.

What will make the showdown even more interesting is the fact that Simbine and Bruintjies became training partners last week. Werner Prinsloo is coaching both.

Asked whether he thinks he is capable of running a faster time than 9.96s, Simbine immediately said yes.

“I am confi dent that I can run a much faster time.”

The Tuks/hpc athlete was however not prepared to commit to a specifi c time.

If Simbine can have one wish, it will be that big sponsors get involved with local athletics.

“Since last year South African athletes proved we can be trusted when it comes to delivering results. Imagine what we will be capable of with proper fi nancial support. We might become like the US sprinters.”

Unique Kolonnade 3-in-1 road race gets league statusKoos Venter

The fi rst 3-in-1 road race by Overkruin Athletics took place with great success on 23 May last year, and this year the race will take place on Saturday 19 March.

Last year’s race was reckoned as one of the best presented races in Pretoria and the club was awarded league status for its race this year.

Overkruin Athletics club involves the community to market the race locally and also assist at water points. This creates ex-citement among runners and helpers.

Runners have a choice between a 5km fun run, a 10km road race or a 21km half- marathon through the scenic Montana Park, with the start and fi nish at Kolonnade shop-

ping centre.The Budget Insurance Kolonnade 3-in-1

is being run for the second year, and is a community event with the schools in the area manning the water points. There is a competition for the best water point so this makes for a great atmosphere on the race day.

The Kolonnade shopping centre offers lots of parking and restaurants for hungry runners looking for a post-race breakfast.

Also look out for the Harley Davidson motorcycles on the 5km fun run.

The race starts at 06:00 on 19 March with on the day registration from 04:30 at entrance 3 of the shopping centre.

A dominant South African Davis Cup team romped to a 5-0 win over Luxembourg at the Irene Country Club in Pretoria on Sunday.

South Africa failed to lose a set in all fi ve games played in the three day tie and was in fi rm control throughout.

On Sunday in the reverse singles, which were reduced to best of three tie break sets as the tie had already been decided, Tucker Vorster and Lloyd Harris gave South Africa the clean sweep.

Vorster beat Tom Diederich 6-3, 6-4 while Harris beat Alex Knaff 6-2, 6-1 in front of an impressive and enthusiastic crowd.

Marcos Ondruska, the South African cap-tain said he couldn’t be happier with his fi rst outing as captain.

“I am extremely happy and proud of my team. It was a dream start to my Davis Cup captaincy and my players executed well and really lifted their games to a high level, kept composed and put on a good show. We failed to lose a set this weekend, didn’t take any set to a tiebreaker and that showed the form of the entire team was on point.”

Ondruska said that the solid win was a team effort.

“The entire squad have got on extremely well and this played a huge part in the weekend success. “The guys have had a fun time and made the most of every opportunity which helped a lot with the win.”

Die jaarlikse Kosie Reitz Presidente Stoei-toernooi is die afgelope Saterdag in die Noord-Gauteng Stoeisaal in Menlopark aangebied.

Die bekende Reitz-stoeiklub, wat vanjaar hul 80e verjaardag vier, het die toernooi met groot sukses aangebied.

Stoeiers tussen sewejariges en o.20’s was in aksie. Een aspek wat die toernooi anders gemaak het, is dat die dag afgeskop het met vyf vertoongevegte deur meesterstoeiers.

Stoei onder meesters is weer besig om in gewildheid te groei en daar is tans ’n groot groep meesters in Pretoria bedrywig.

Meesterstoei is vir stoeiers oor die ouder-dom van 35 jaar. Die groep Suid-Afrikaners wat verlede jaar na die wêreldkampioenskap getoer het, het stoeiers tot so oud as 60 jaar

ingesluit.Daar het groot belangstelling geheers

onder die toeskouers by Saterdag se Kosie Reitz-toernooi toe die meesters naderstaan vir hul vertoongevegte. Die geveg wat egter die meeste belangstelling gaande gemaak het was dié tussen Willem Putter en Mike Rademeyer. Putter is ’n stoeilegende in Suid-Afrika en almal wou hom in aksie sien.

Hy het ook nie teleurgestel nie en hoewel Rademeyer ’n waardige teenstander was, het Putter sommer gou met hom afgereken.

Putter is immers die afgelope 10 jaar reeds wêreldkampioen in sy gewigsafdeling as meesterstoeier.

Daar sal waarskynlik ’n klein bietjie minder kritiek wees van die kant van die hiper-kritiese Bulls-ondersteuners ná Sater-dag se maklike oorwinning van 45-25 teen die Rebels van Melbourne, Australië.

Op die oog af kan daar natuurlik weer baie kritiek gelewer word. Byvoorbeeld, hoe op aarde kon die Bulls, vanuit ’n posisie waar hulle in ’n stadium 42-3 voor was, vier onbeantwoorde drieë afstaan?

Dít het gepaard gegaan met verdediging wat op SupeRugby-vlak nie anders as pate-ties beskryf kan word nie.

Dit het weer bewys dat Bulls ondersteu-ners vanjaar geduld sal moet hê, want hier-die jong span is nog ver van kampioenstatus.

Om vir 80 minute te kan fokus is tog juis een van die eienskappe van ’n kam-pioenspan.

Tog, op die keper beskou was daar oom-blikke in daardie eerste helfte wat fl itse van ’n toekomstige kampioenspan gewys het.

Die drieë van Travis Ismael en Jannes Kirsten is byvoorbeeld albei voorafgegaan deur skitterspel, waar voor- en agterspelers puik gekombineer het.

Daar is nog te min manne wat verant-woordelikheid neem vir aspekte van die spel waar hulle veronderstel is om verant-woordelikheid te neem. Daar is beslis nog te min sterk leiers en daar kan nie van Adriaan Strauss verwag word om alleen vir alles verantwoordelikheid te neem nie.
