Kasco Abrasives is an American manufacturer of abrasives and backup pads. We have been in business in Michigan since the mid 1970’s with several plant expansions to handle added product lines. In addition to the standard items shown in this catalog we make thousands of special sizes and specifications to fit our customer’s require-ments. We also provide private label products to many abrasive companies and large distributors.

We operate two divisions, Kasco Abrasives and Koltec USA. Kasco Abrasives sells a full abrasive line as well as the Koltec line of backup pads, primarily aimed at the dis-tributor market. Koltec USA produces the backup pads and sells exclusively to other abrasive companies, tool companies, and abrasive converters.

Type “C” ALOX We no longer stock this good quality general purpose resin fiber disc. Limited stock is still available and it can be special ordered. Our Type A ALOX disc is our preferred offering.

Type “A” ALOX A premium quality resin over cloth fiber disc recommended for most metals including stainless steel. A special grinding additive provides cool performance.

Type “AZF” ZIRCONIA Alumina zirconia (BLUE) for extra long life on tough jobs. Excellent on stainless steel. The best value for heavy production work.

Quick Change All resin fiber discs can be ordered with a 5/8-11 metal hub. Add $0.40 to the list price. Minimum order is 1,000 discs of the same diameter. Allow 3-4 weeks for shipment.

Type “S” SILICON CARBIDE

Silicon carbide is recommended for use on granite, marble, masonry, and other non-metallic materials.

MINI GRIND-R QC DISCS

Kasco Mini Grind-R QC Discs. These discs bring a new level of performance to quick change discs. The Type R quick change button is integral with the plastic back, eliminating any chance of the button coming off. The one piece polymer back is much stronger than a paper or cloth disc. These discs will outlast standard discs by up to five times.

They can also be special ordered in silicon carbide and alumina zirconia. Standard pack of 10.

Premium silicon carbide C weight paper for wet/dry sanding. Use on granite, marble and other ceramic materials. PSA discs have parting paper with a pull tab. The 5” and 4” discs have a 1/2” center hole.

CLOTH PSA DISCS

KASCO cloth PSA discs are X wt aluminum oxide, and are available on a made to order basis. Diameters: 1/2” to 24” AO Grits: 24 to 320. The last three digits of the part number are the grit. For example, 6” disc 150 grit will be #71006150.

ABRASIVE BELTS

All belts are made to order to meet the requirements of each application. Abrasive cloth is available to cover a wide range of applications, including both open and closed coat. Belts are available for portable sanders, stationary shop sanders, wide belts, pump sleeves and most other applications. Available in widths 3/8” to 52” and any length. SEMI-FLEX DISCS

Semi-flex discs offer a thick layer of abrasive grain in unique swirl pattern that creates an air flow for cooler running and less clogging. These discs are ideal for stock removal over a wide area. Requires the use of a RFD back-up pad, but that pad may be smaller than the disc diameter. For example, a 4½ “ resin fiber disc back-up pad may be used with the 7” disc.

WAVY EDGE H&L DISCS

Kasco’s wavy hook & loop discs are perfect for sanding small contoured pieces. Since the disc wavy edge ex-tends over the edge of the backup pad they will conform to convex shapes like wood bowls. Our discs are not the typical paper, but cloth back for much longer disc life and durability. These cloth discs will not tear. Also can be special ordered in 3” diameter.

With the 1/4” spindle backup pad they can be used with electric drills and other collet tools. They are especially popular with wood turners, wood bowl makers, and other craftsmen.

KASCO mini flap discs are ideal for light grinding and fin-ishing in one operation. Excellent for weld removal and blending. The discs have a Type R “Roll-on” threaded attachment. PREMIUM MOUNTED FLAP WHEELS

Mounted flap wheels are listed with 1/4” straight shanks. Many can be ordered with threaded 1/4-20 shanks rather than the 1/4” straight shank. Add a “-1” to the end of the part number.

SCUFF BALLS

Kasco’s Scuff Ball™ tools are made up of individual layers of non-woven ma-terial layered, compressed, and assembled into a ball. They have a series of fingers that can reach into tight spaces and conform to the work piece. They resist clogging and do not overheat. Some of benefits include:

Power scuffing saves labor and provides a more consistent finish. The ball shape provides superior performance over hand scuffing. The Scuff Ball™ renews itself as it wears. It can be cleaned with compressed air or water. They do not overheat due to airflow through the open web structure.

Available in two sizes: 4" diameter rated at 5,000 RPM and 2.5" diameter rated at 10,000 RPM. These RPM ratings are maximum but Scuff Balls™ works very well at slower speeds typical of electric drill motors.

Coarse Green Compares to #2 steel wool. Use for heavy scrubbing and removal of rust and scale.

Medium Maroon Is a general purpose grit comparable to #00 steel wool.

Fine Grey Compares to #000 steel wool. It produces a bright shiny finish.

These coarse synthetic fiber discs are impregnated with abrasive grit, and are a safer alternative to wire bristle brushes. Use to remove surface material without damaging the under-surface. They are ideal for:

NONWOVEN HAND PADS

KASCO nonwoven nylon pads are 6" x 9" in size for hand cleaning and polish-ing a variety of materials. They are available in five color coded grades as listed below.

WHITE

NON-ABRASIVE - For polishing or light cleanup jobs. Can be used to replace #0000 steel wool. Excellent for use with detergent or cleaners to remove grease or stubborn spots.

GRAY FINE – A fine grit silicon carbide pad. Can be used to sand between coats of stain or varnish.

MAROON MEDIUM - Aluminum oxide pad for most general purpose applications. Used to remove rust, clean and brighten metal, and general smoothing job. The most popular pad.

GREEN

COARSE – Aluminum oxide hand pad designed for use with chemical strippers to remove paint or varnish. Also good for rust removal jobs.

DIAMOND POLISHING PADS

Kasco diamond polishing pads are an economic choice while provid-ing good quality performance. They are available in a grit range of 50 to 3000. Ideal for polishing marble and granite. Order individually or in sets. Our #151409 backup pads fits tools with a 5/8-11 arbor and it has the water injection holes. The diamond polishing pads attach to the backup pad by a strong hook & loop connection. Wet pads are for shop use where water cools the work piece and controls dust. Dry pads are more costly and are for onsite polishing.

INTERCHANGEABLE PLATE SYSTEM Kasco’s patented plate system for 7” resin fiber discs offer both end-users and distributors maximum flexibility and performance. A precision hub threads on to the tool’s 5/8-11 shaft. A total of six backing plates are available that at-tach the hub with a quarter turn. There are four smooth face flexes and two ribbed face flexes. This system allows users to change disc flexes without replacing the entire pad. It also is more cost effective to replace the plates than an entirely new pad. All are rated at 8,500 Max RPM.

SMOOTH FACE PADS These pads are made from proprietary thermoplastic rubber compounds that provides consistent properties over a wide range of temperatures. They are ideal pads for general purpose applications using resin fiber discs with grits 36 and finer . All pads are for discs with 7/8” holes except #151300 and #151296 are for 5/8” arbor hole sanding discs.

RIBBED FACE PADS These pads are ideal for coarse grit grinding and most general purpose applications. Recommended for use with grits 50 and coarser. The pads have been redesigned with a flat shape and cooling holes to promote more cooling airflow through the ribs. Pad nuts are included.

KASCO straight rotation pads (not dual action DA) are typically used in finishing and polishing applications with hook & loop backed abrasive discs. Pads with water feed holes can be used with diamond pads for polishing of marble, granite and other ceramic materials in a wet mode. These pads are for use with paper or cloth discs, or with diamond polishing pads. They are not suitable for SCD discs. See the pads on Page 43 for use with SCD discs.

BACKUP PADS – GRIPPER FOR SCD DISCS

KASCO pads for nonwoven surface conditioning discs (SCD) have a Gripper “T” extra long hook surface on a flexible molded thermal plastic base. The 5/8-11 arbor pads have flats on the back for easy installation and removal from the tool arbor. All gripper pads are industrial grade. This style pad is not recommended for use with hook & loop backed paper or cloth sanding discs.

INTERFACE PADS

Interface pads are used to soften the action of the primary pad like a DA or spindle pad. They are constructed with a thick foam layer that provides ideal action for fine grits and polishing applications. The side of the interface pad that mates to the primary pad is Velcro®, and the opposite side is either Velcro® or vinyl for PSA.

DO always handle and store wheels in a careful manner. Store in a dry area with minimum climate control. Avoid large temperature swings and high humidity.

DO visually inspect all wheels before mounting and using for possible damage.

DO make sure the TOOL MAXIMUM OPERATING SPEED DOES NOT EXCEED THE WHEEL RATED SPEED. This rule is especially applicable to pneumatic tools with speed regulators.

DO check the mounting flanges to be certain they are of equal diameter and the correct size. Use mounting blotters when supplied with wheels.

DO use BREATHING PROTECTION when grinding for long time period. Abrasive dust can cause respiratory ailments.

DO always USE A SAFETY GUARD on all tools. The guard should cover at least 1/2 of the wheel diameter.

DO allow newly mounted wheels to run at operating speed for few moments prior to engaging the work piece.

DO always WEAR SAFETY GLASSES when grinding. The addition of a full face shield is recommended for heavy grinding jobs.

DO only grind or cut material for which the wheel was designed.

DO become familiar with and follow the provisions of American National Standard ANSI B7.1.

DON'T use a wheel that has been dropped or mishandled.

DON'T force a wheel onto a machine arbor or alter the size of mounting hole. If a wheel won't fit the machine, get one that will.

DON'T use a tool that has had the wheel guard removed or is missing. Don’t remove the wheel guard to make the wheel fit.

DON'T ever EXCEED THE MAXIMUM OPERATING RPM SPEED listed on the wheel.

DON'T use mounting flanges that are not clean and flat, or of different diameters.

DON'T excessively tighten the mounting nuts.

DON'T grind on the side of any Type 1 flat wheel. When using depressed center Type 27 wheels, grind a minimum of 15° angle above the work plane. NEVER GRIND FLAT.

DON'T jam the wheel into the work piece.

DON'T stand directly in front of a wheel whenever the tool is started. When grinding or cutting, stand away from the spark line.

DON'T use a grinding wheel for an application other than for which it was designed.
