Write your numbers 1 – 5 ensuring correct formation

Add up to 5 e.g

Before you read / listen to a story make a prediction and write/draw what you think will happen After reading/listening to the story draw a picture of what you have read/ heard

Practise reading and writing the following sight words. These words cannot be sounded out so your child needs to become familiar with them. Put into a sentence and write down if capable.

1. the 2. was 3. she 4. I 5. we 6. me

Practice writing word families, draw pictures to accompany words and put into sentences orally and ask your child to write them down if capable.

1. -ig words e.g. pig, wig, fig 2. -et words e.g. pet, wet, get 3. -op words 4. -an words

If your child is unsure of his/her letter sounds

you can write and cut out each sound and

practise saying these sounds every day. Look

up Jolly Phonics on YouTube and you will find

the songs and actions associated with each

sound. You could also do a ‘Sound Hunt’

around your home

e.g.

Write letters on card/paper, cut up and ask your child to form various words. e.g.

Write words from reader/sight words above/simple CVC words on card/paper, cut them up and form sentences e.g.

Cutting skills: Cut up pieces of paper (e.g. old

magazines, old Argos catalogues etc.) and

glue onto paper/cardboard E.g. old cereal

box. Group cut out objects according to

colour/size/item etc.

Rhyming words: This activity can be completed orally first of all. Say a word and see can the child think of rhyming words. If they find it difficult say the two words and see can they understand the concept. E.g cat – mat Pig – dig Hop – pop Children can progress to writing the rhyming words. Poem: I have a Little Frog

Writing – Suggestion: Choose 3 sentences to write every day (sample below). Write sentences into copy/lined paper. Read aloud when finished. Please remember and encourage the following:

• Correct grip of pencil

• Correct letter formation

• Write left to right

• Capital letter at start of sentence

• Space between words

• Full stop at end of sentence.

Opposites: Have a discussion about the word

opposite and what this means. E.g. The

opposite of tall is short. The opposite of hot is

cold.

Extension activity:

Draw a picture of the opposite. E.g. happy/sad

etc.

I have a Little Frog His name is Tiny Tim I put him in the bathtub To see if he could swim He drank up all the water And gobbled up all the soap! And when he tried to talk He had a bubble in his throat. Suggestion: Learn two lines daily & by Friday you will know a new poem!

Suggestion: Choose 3 sentences daily to write. Today is _________________. My name is ______________. Look at me. I am big. It is hot. I see the sun. It is wet. I can run. I can hop. I see a cat. I sit on the mat. She has a red hat. He has a big dog. We go to the shop.

• See lists of words below, these words are phonetically regular and your child should be able to write these words by

themselves as long as they can hear the sounds in them and know how to write the letters for their sounds. Dictate/read the

words provided and ask your child to write them.

• Also below are the Jolly phonics sounds and the associated action with the sound. This will be particularly useful for your

child as a revision tool or if your child has difficulty with sounds.

• The last image has sample words for the jolly phonics sounds.

Senior Infants Suggested Activities

Senior Infants Suggested Activities 20th April – 1st May

Please remember that the ideas below are only suggestions for the next 2 weeks. Think of them as a menu for you to pick and choose from.

Don’t worry or stress about getting everything done, we do not expect you to! Whatever you can is enough, we will all catch up together when

this is over. Remember imaginative play is particularly important in infant education so encourage it - if they are playing, they are learning!

Page numbers for those who have books have been highlighted for easy access.

For those who have access to the internet we mention “Twinkl” and folensonline a lot below. Please see previous activity page for information

on how to set up free accounts or email us for help.

• Ms McDermott – [email protected]

English Reading

• Try to do a bit of reading everyday – independent or to them or via audiobook etc. For those who brought home their reader aim for about 4 – 8 pages per week. Can access all readers on www.folensonline.ie once you’ve set up your account. If finished with these books use ones you have at home or try ebooks (see previous activity page for links)

• Play “What card is on my head” - put a post it with a sound on your child’s forehead and name words that have that sound in it – they use these clues to guess the sound.

• Substituting sounds game – Ask your child the following type of questions; I am thinking of the word “hat”, what happens if I change /t/ to /m/ etc

• Pick a tricky word from their red copy and ask them to write a sentence with it. • Hopscotch Words – draw a hopscotch on the ground using chalk. The child throws a stone on a word. They hop from

square to square chanting each word until they land on the space with the stone. Over the Moon pages 103, 106 For extra resources, ideas and games from online sources see previous activity page Oral language

Theme: The Zoo • Talk about the zoo - have they ever been, what do you see and hear there? You can use your child’s workbook page 102,

interactive Zoo poster on gillexplore.ie or the Dublin Zoo website to help start a chat about it • Word tennis – take turns naming a zoo animal until you can’t think of anymore! • What am I? – your child picks a zoo animal and must provide you with clues (eg: what it looks like, eats, sounds like etc) • Listening game – using page 102 of the Over the Moon book (or any colouring page) give your child instructions on

what to colour in – eg colour the seal grey, colour the word “zoo” red etc)

Extra resources and online activities: • Find your child’s Over the Moon Skills book on gillexplore.ie, select Oral Language and Interactive Resources from

Resource Types and try out The Zoo activities from Unit 8 • Can also use the gillexplore website to read the ebook “Life in the Zoo” which you can find in the Genre Story Ebooks

section • https://www.dublinzoo.ie/ - watch the animals on live webcams! • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rudDGRQ9QGA – Dear Zoo story

Writing

• Motor skills activities– cutting and sticking, playing with playdough, making puzzles, drawing, colouring, dot to dot pages. Twinkl provide a lot of the above.

• Our new capital letters this fortnight are capitals Q and L. Fun ideas include making the letter using playdough/cubes/counters/stones – anything! Trace the letter into sand or paint the letter. You can revise capitals C, O, and G in this manner too before completing the handwriting page.

• Write out simple sentences missing capital letters and full stops – ask your child to write them again and fix the sentence – if they struggle with this they could simply put a circle around the letters missing capitals.

• Try a simple dictation activity with your child – call out words which follow the phonics rules (use word lists in red copy for ideas), ask them to “say it slowly like a snail” and write down all the sounds they hear. Could progress to simple sentences if that’s too easy.

• Encourage your child to complete a piece of free writing, daily if possible. This can range from 1-2 sentences to as many as the child feels comfortable completing.

• All Write Now page 36, 37, 38 • Reading Zone pages 45 – 52 • Over the Moon pages 104, 105

Maths The topic for this fortnight is adding on the number line. The skills we are going to focus on are

1. Revising number order 1 – 10 2. Adding on the number line by “counting on” 3. Writing sums to match our number line activities

For the below activities senior infants usually cover numbers one to ten. If your child finds the below activities too easy, try with higher numbers, eg 1 – 20. If you want to make the number sentences trickier add 3 numbers instead of 2, eg: 2 + 3 + 1 = Activity 1: Draw 2 big circles and ask your child to make 2 sets using equipment around the house (for example your child could put 3 buttons in one circle and 5 in the other). Ask your child to write down the number sentence that matches - eg: 3 + 5 = 8. Repeat with different equipment and sets. Activity 2 Make a giant “walk on” number line from 1 – 10 by writing a number on each A4 page and ask your child to arrange the numbers into the correct order on the floor. Can play some of the number order games mentioned in our previous activity page. Activity 3: Give your child number sentences to solve by jumping on the “walk on” number line. Eg; 5+3 = Your child must start on 5, go on 3 more spaces and then write the answer they land on in the number sentence – 5+3=8 Activity 4: Use family members or toys to demonstrate “counting on” on the giant number line/ Eg: Mum is standing on number 9. Dad is standing on number 4. How many steps must Dad take to reach mum (Answer = 3). Can check by asking Dad to jump to Mum while you count! Help your child to record their answer as a sum eg: 4 + 5 = 9 Planet Maths pages: 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, 115 Important tip: make sure they place the finger on the correct starting number each time – and when adding on the number line we jump forward – not on the spot! Below are extra resources, ideas and games from online sources:

• Search “Colour by number addition to 10” on Twinkl and encourage your child to use the number line to solve the sums

• Find your child’s maths book on folensonline.ie and select Resources. Search “number line” for an interactive game • Interactive number line: http://www.eduplace.com/cgi-

bin/schtemplate.cgi?template=/kids/mw/manip/mn_popup.thtml&filename=nmbl_prim&title=Number%20Line&grade=1

Irish If you have Irish maybe focus on teaching a phrase or two per day and encourage the kids to use it throughout the day. If you know what something is in Irish, use it! We’re expected to do very little in written Irish with children in senior infants so just focus on speaking it if you can.

• If possible, use the free language learning app Duolingo and select Irish. Your child can win hearts for correct answers. • Twinkl – “The Weather Audio Powerpoint Gaeilge” • Ask your child to perform the rhymes and songs they remember from school • Watch something on Cula 4/TG 4 on tv:

https://www.cula4.com/en/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIn9v4zf-U6AIVwbHtCh222wOZEAAYASAAEgIZMPD_BwE

SESE History/Drama Stories make up a big part of the history curriculum in senior infants so continue reading stories with your child Suggested activities:

• Look at the front cover, predict what it might be about, could do a picture walk – look at the pictures on each page first and then use these to guess what might happen in the story

• Read book and can stop at times to talk about characters, what might happen next, how __ is feeling etc • Ask questions after reading to check understanding • Put pictures from the story in order (can find pictures to a lot of well-known stories on Twinkl and a lot of websites

have similar activities – see below) • Retell the story in their own words (can use the pictures from the story to help if struggling) • Ask your child to act out the story. Twinkl has puppet templates that you can print out and make to re-enact the story if

you wish or they could make puppets themselves by drawing characters and sticking them onto lollipop sticks • Draw pictures from the story

Suggested story for this fortnight is “Chicken Licken". You may have the book or, if you have access to the internet, there are lots of versions and related activities online. If neither of these options is possible just pick a storybook you do have at home.

Extra resources: • Search “Chicken Licken” in Twinkl. There is a powerpoint on the story along with matching activities. • Chicken Licken story on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzZbtMFP-_I • For other stories and related games try www.topmarks.co.uk Select Literacy, Foundation and then Stories

Science Topic: The Fox Suggested activities

• Watch this video to learn lots about foxes https://www.youtube.com/embed/GBMDbldWx-c?rel=0

• Can you find more facts or videos about foxes? Use books or the internet – adult supervision needed! • Draw the fox. Can you add labels to your drawing? • Write a report on the fox. If your child is finding it hard to write a sentence, pictures and labels are just as good. Don’t

worry too much about spelling – just encourage the writing! What does the fox look like? Eat? Where does it live? See an example of a simple report on page 107 of Over the Moon Skills Book

• Talk about the difference between wild and tame animals – wild animals do everything for themselves, tame animals do not and live with people. Can your child draw a set of wild animals and a set of tame animals?

Small World page 30 Geography Topic: Positional language (eg; up, down, under, over, beside, behind etc) Suggested activities

• Guessing game – tell your child you are thinking of something in the room. Your child must guess what the object is by asking questions eg; is it near the kettle, is it on top of the table, under the chair?etc

• Treasure hunt – hide an object in the room. Your child must ask questions using positional language to find out where it is

• Drawing game: give directions to your child to draw a picture (an older sibling could give instructions) eg: Draw a dog. Draw a ball beside it. Draw a snail under it etc

• Play “Simon Says” using positional language • Teach your child the difference between left and right with this handy trick – Have them put their hands in the air. The

hand that can make the capital L shape with their thumb and pointer finger is their left hand • Target game: call out instructions using positional language; eg – throw the ball and make it land under the chair etc • Read story “Going on a Bear Hunt” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Waoa3iG3bZ4

Small World pages: 12, 47 Art

• Why not try and make a fox? Search “Fox art and crafts” on Google or Pinterest. You could try this paper plate fox!

• Junk art – use recyclable materials (cardboard boxes, plastic bottles etc), glue, sellotape, markers etc and your

imagination! How about zoo animals? • Use your playdough to make the characters from the Chicken Licken story! Can find Chicken Licken playdough mats on

Twinkl. If you don’t have playdough you can make it – see instructions on our previous activity page • For other ideas search art and crafts on Twinkl, Google, Pinterest or www.redtedart.com

Music

• Dabbledoo music is a brilliant new music programme that is offering free subscription https://dabbledoomusic.com/p/parents

Try out November’s lessons 9 -12

• If little or no access to internet ask your child to perform some of the songs we learned this year. Maybe mum or dad knows a song they can teach you?

I hope you are all healthy and safe. Below I have given a list of suggested work. Do not worry if you cannot complete it, it is given

as a guideline only.

English:

• Find an old copy and keep it as a diary. Each day, write a few sentences about your news that day; what you did that day,

what the weather is like and how you feel. Begin each diary entry with the full date.

For example:

‘Today is Monday 20th April 2020. It is sunny outside but it is also windy and a bit cold, so I need to wear a jumper when I go

outside. Earlier today, I played in the garden. I played a chasing game with my Dad. I felt happy today that I got to play

outside for a long time because of the nice weather. I am excited to play chasing with my Dad again tomorrow.’

Crith Talún = An Earthquake

An earthquake is a sudden movement in the ground. A strong earthquake knocks houses and buildings. A terrible earthquake

happened in Nepal in 2015. More than 8,000 people died. Tsunamis, floods and fires can happen after an earthquake.

Hairicín = Hurricane

A hurricane is a large storm. Usually, a hurricane lasts for a week or longer. The majority of hurricanes start in areas in the

vicinity of the Equator. A large hurricane hit America in 2005. It was given the name “Hurricane Katrina.” It did a lot of damage

and over a million people died.

Súnámaí = Tsunamis

A tsunami is a series of gigantic waves. A tsunami starts underneath the water. An earthquake underneath the water is often the

cause of it. Gigantic waves come into a country and they knock everything in their path. A terrible tsunami happened on St.

Stephen’s Day in 2004 in Indonesia. Between 230,000 and 280,000 people died.

Dóiteán foraoise= Forest Fire

A fire that goes out of control in a forest is a forest fire. At times, the fire brigade spend a week or longer trying to extinguish the

fire. The majority of forest fires happen in hot, dry places – for example, in Australia. A gigantic fire happened in Alberta,

Canada in 2016. It did a lot of damage and thousands of people had to leave the place.

Seán: The weather is soft in Ireland, but it is often lashing rain. There are clouds in the sky almost every day and it is seldom

dry.

Interviewer: Is the weather the same in each of the seasons?

Seán: It is not. It is cold in Winter and hotter during the Summer.

Interviewer: Are there any natural disasters in Ireland?

Seán: At times, we have storms during the Winter, but that’s it. We had a couple of large storms last year and most of them

were in the West of Ireland.

Interviewer: Would you like to go and live in any other country?

Seán: Spain or France would be nice, because the weather is hot and dry there.

Interviewer: And outside of Europe?
