ICICI RSETI

Annual Report 2016-17

The year 2016-17 witnessed new landmarks as ICICI RSETI – Jodhpur completed and celebrated its 10th year of establishment. 15,044 candidates have been benefited by implementing a total of 526 training programs and participation of women has increased to 54%.

“The real India lies in the villages. If Indian civilisation is to make its full contribution to the building up of a stable world order, it is this vast mass of humanity that has to be made to live again.” This inspirational quote by MK G a n d h i d e f i n e s o u r i d e o l o g y, strengthening the path for our mission – Skilling the forgotten billion.

Skills and knowledge drives nation’s economic and social development. India has the lowest proportion of well-trained and skilled workers, only a f ract ion o f our work fo rce has undergone formal skill training as compared to the rest of the world. Given this demographic diversity, it is important to improve the access of the underprivileged youth to formal skill training in order to gain employment and ensure sustainable livelihood.

ICICI RSETI’s journey of contributing to the skill development ecosystem in India started in the year 2011 and since then IFIG has been managing ICICI RSETIs in Udaipur and Jodhpur on behalf of ICICI Bank. Their objective is to provide opportunities and initiate new ventures for underprivileged rural youth; provide job-oriented vocational training programmes, improve their livelihood potential and quality of life. The ICICI RSETI model specializes in imparting training in locally relevant trades, credit and market linkages and encouraging participation of rural youth in the growth of the country.

Both these RSETI’s have created several benchmarks in the region

through their unique high-quality training programmes. The innovative satellite centres at the block levels make the centres unique. These centres implement a holistic skill development model to promote demand based livelihood training, financial literacy, and enterprise development and assist credit & market linkages.

The year 2016-17 witnessed new landmarks as ICICI RSETI – Jodhpur completed and celebrated its 10th year of establishment. 15,044 candidates have been benefited by implementing a total of 526 training programs and participation of women has increased to 54%.

The journey so far has been full of learning and satisfying in terms of achievements, a lot remains to be done in future. Going forward, ICICI RSETIs will continue to build on hopes and dreams of the rural youth and encourage their participation in building a better sustainable world.

ICICI RSETI

Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs) are set up under the aegis of the Min ist ry of Rura l Development (MoRD) to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for the underprivileged rural youth and are managed by lead banks in every district.

The ICICI RSETI model strives on a demand based training in locally relevant trades to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural youth. Since the inception, ICICI RSETIs in Udaipur and Jodhpur have trained over 53,000 youth. ICICI RSETIs offer training in 33 trades for rural youth between 18 to 35 years in electrical & home appliances repair, plumbing and sanitary works, masonry and concrete works, Office Administration and Electric Wiring & Appliances and so on. With propitious intention to increase our contribution in Agriculture and allied activities, trades such as dairy farming, vermicompost production and goat rearing have been promoted. This year, we have trained 5,457 rural youth in these trades which account for 36% of the total training and we envisage achieving a target of 44% by next fiscal year.

In fiscal 2016-17, ICICI RSETIs have trained over 15,000 youth of which 54% are women with a settlement rate of 76%. This includes 1,780 women from Self Help Groups (SHGs).

Since Udaipur and Jodhpur are major tourist destinations of India, this year,

ICICI RSETI collaborated with the Tourist Department of Rajasthan to conduct a 7-day refresher training programme benefitting 680 local tourist guides in these cities.

ICICI RSETIs in Udaipur and Jodhpur were recognised as the top performing RSETIs in the country for the fourth consecutive year by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India and the National Centre for E x c e l l e n c e o f R S E T I s , t h u s , acknowledging our sustained efforts.

In the future, ICICI RSETIs wil l persevere to enhance the economic potential of India’s rural youth through skill development and build on our lessons and experiences over the previous years to achieve inclusive growth.

With the rapid rise of globalisation and service sector in India, more products & services are made available to the population with the help of strengthened distribution network. The shortage of skilled human resources coupled with huge demand for service-oriented personnel has given rise to a new kind of service industry: Individuals who are professionally trained in specific services and maintenance. ICICI RSETIs offers Process Entrepreneurship Development Programmes which ensures higher absorption rate locally thus giving growth momentum to self-employment.

E n t r e p r e n e u r s h i p Aw a r e n e s s Programmes are one of the most useful tools for mobilising rural youth. It is an awareness cum promotional drive which comprises of group meetings mostly held at the prominent location of the villages. It is jointly conducted by ICICI RSETI team and in collaboration with local bodies such as Panchayati Raj Institutions, Local NGOs, Banks, Government Departments, SHG Federations, Mahila Mandals, Farmers Clubs, Youth Clubs, and College etc.

As a part of the RSETI model, EAPs helps to create awareness among the target groups about various skill development training programmes which are conducted at ICICI RSETI. It is an interactive session held in the form of group meetings in which most relevant information are given to the group such as- Importance of skill training, Entrepreneurship, Credit linkages, post training hand-holding, infrastructure and facilities provided during the training. Queries and doubts are cleared on the spot. Informative pamphlets and leaflets are distributed. At the end of meeting one-to-one counselling and application generation is done. During the EAP session, the prospective applicants are introduced to the objectives of the programmes and motivated through experience sharing by successful entrepreneurs followed by small group discussion focused on goal setting and scope of self-employment. The plan n helps trainees learn about the training programmes and the bus iness

opportunities that lay ahead of them.

Overall it is an important exercise of generating not only applications but also a platform to get feedback and to know the interest area of local youth; also it acts as an excellent tool of liaising with villagers at large.

Impact Assessment Report SummaryDairy Farming and Vermicompost Making Training Programme - Udaipur and Jodhpur

Impact Assessment To analyse the socioeconomic variables of our beneficiaries ICICI RSETI periodically conduct a field study on different themes such as impact assessment of training, Gap study, industry demand trends, etc. This year we selected "Agriculture and dairy farming" batches as our main subject of study and did a comprehensive study of its impact among the trainees at both Udaipur and Jodhpur centre. Key Finding of the report is stated below:

UdaipurŸ 73% families were found with increased income after the interventionŸ Those families in which both husband and wife both practice, have shown remarkable improvement compared to

a single practitioner in the household. Ÿ Awareness level of scientific practices has been improved very well, but at practice level this needs improvement Ÿ People are aware of profitable milk marketing Ÿ Analysis reveals a clear picture of much higher impact of Dairy training rather than Goat rearingŸ Dairy has caused a remarkable hike in average income compared to Goat rearingŸ Adoption of scientific practices in any discipline results in better productivity than local prevalent practices Ÿ There is a scope of training in Bhinder, Salumber and Sarada as most of the respondents replied very positively.

JodhpurŸ 68% of farmers have an increase in their income after implementing the learnings from trainingŸ Women who are members of Self Help Groups are good practitioners of the learningŸ Farmers are reluctant towards certain new practices like organic spray & Farm Yard Manure making due to lack of

patience in spending time for preparing, even though they are aware of the benefitsŸ Farmers (45% in organic spray & 28.33% in FYM) are not shifting to organic fertilisers/pesticides due to the fear of

less yield Ÿ In villages those are affected by water scarcity, usage of FYM is minimal Ÿ 60% of the women are feeling more confident than before after attending the trainingŸ 54.75% of trainees are not opting ‘Artificial Insemination’ for cattle Because in Bhoplagarh the service is provided

by only one trust and are charging in between Rs. 350-500 and the failure rate is high.

Stakeholder’s Views

Training given by ICICI RSETI Udaipur in different trades helps the local unemployed youth to get trained and employed. Efforts are impressive. Best of luck for bright future.

Arjun lal MeenaMember of Parliament, Udaipur

ICICI RSETI, Udaipur and Jodhpur has been playing a significant role in training and skill development of the unemployed youth benefitting a large number of unemployed youth. Both RSETIs have enlarged its focus, not only on credit linking and more number of trained candidates but also in playing a bigger role in the placement of skilled candidates by creating a placement team consisting of experienced bankers, who are extending the required support and guidance to them.

Dr D Veerendra HeggadeHon. Co-Chairman, NLAC on RSETIs

On my visit to both RSETI's, i.e. Udaipur and Jodhpur which is sponsored by ICICI Bank. I had an opportunity to interact with trainees of ongoing training programmes. The confidence level of the trainees was so high that they are ready to take up self-employment ventures immediately after the completion of the training, this was possible because of the high-level commitment of the director and staff of ICICI RSETI. The training material made available by the institute is of excellent quality. The infrastructure is self-sufficient with all facilities put in place and is being put to optimum utilisation. ICICI RSETI Udaipur and Jodhpur are following the best practice stipulated by MoRD. It is a role model for other RSETIs in the state. The best part of these RSETI's is the block level RSETIs which is equivalent to the district level RSETI by all means. I wish ICICI RSETI and its team all the very best in their future endeavours.

K N JanardhanaNational director of RSETI, Government of India

The "Skill Development" sector is going through a major transformation, it has taken shape of a movement in itself, and the demand or force which is driving it is the 'responsibility' to provide sustainable livelihood to thousands of unemployed and dropout youth. ICICI RSETI Udaipur is playing a distinct role among all RSETI's of India, and this has been achieved because of its unique innovative approach, high standards of training and dedication of its young and energetic team.

Born into a very low-income family Anjali Prajape had to give up her schooling in 10th standard and was married off to a farm labourer. Her responsibilities to look after the household work and finding ways to provide for all had begun to become an uphill ordeal. Just then on account of a family dispute, she and her husband were forced to find alternative shelter. But as fate had in store, her husband was diagnosed with a heart problem that meant incurring huge sum in treatment. They were rendered utterly helpless and in a shattered state. She, however, began to do some errand work to sustain the family which was beyond any reasonable means to possibly achieve. One day, a friend and an ex-trainee told her about ICICI RSETI and inspired confidence to visit the satellite centre and to get enrolled in the “Beauty Parlour Management” training.

In her words, she says "I loved the attitude and positive environment in the Institute. The trainer's encouragement helped her not only in completing the course but continued to mentor her even after." She did not have any finance to support her new venture, therefore, availed the "gold loan". Above all her, strong zest and desire to start a venture of her own in the form of beauty parlour were realised.

Today she not only earns a decent amount; her plans include repaying her loan and expanding her business by undertaking agencies to sell other beauty products too. A woman of substance that she is – has plans to educate her children and ensure she continues to provide proper medical treatment to her spouse.

Gajendra Salvi - Two Wheeler Repairing & ServicingCentre: Smart, Village: Melana, Jadhol

Udaipur

Emerging victorious in life

22 years old Gajendra Salvi belongs to a low-income family engaged in farming and labour work. His father was the whole and sole caretaker who could barely make ends meet. Issues about survival, as usual, led him to give up schooling to help his father by beginning to earn his living. He did odd jobs despite his disinterest, yet the income generated was highly insufficient. A point came when he quit his job and decided to do something more meaningful in life for a secure future.

Sometime later an opportunity came knocking on his door in the form of Mobilizer of ICICI RSETI. He visited the Smart satellite centre and evinced his interest to get enrolled under the guidance of an expert trainer to learn about "two wheeler servicing". He quite liked the training and found that the trainer was very supportive and helped him sharpen his entrepreneurial skills. After training, he wanted to start something on his own, but his financial condition continued to deter him from taking the plunge. He got the job with the help of ICICI RSETI placement team in a Bike Company service centre. Today Gajendra is earning a satisfactory amount of INR 7500/- per month. The exposure he got during the financial literacy session has proved very useful as he has made a beginning to set aside little savings.

He plans to open his Garage and to provide a better quality of life to his family. "I would never picture my life the way it is now, and I express my deepest sense of gratitude to ICICI RSETI" and help him begin a new journey full of hope and satisfaction.

The journey of thousand miles begins with one step

Mansa Ram, a graduate with a degree in B.A., had to go through melancholy of unemployment like other educated youths of the country. It was Mansa Ram's stoicism collaborated with his skills learned from ICICI RSETI training programme that rescued him from the throes of joblessness.

Mansa Ram, who comes from a marginalised family of labourers, had to struggle hard since his very childhood. He started his schooling very late due to the financial precariousness in the family and simultaneously working here and there. Later, he resorted to teaching at a government school; struggling through the tough times of life, he got to know about training provided at ICICI RSETI. In hopes to start his own business, Mansa Ram immediately joined the programme of Multi-Phone Servicing. The training programme provided him with the required skills, expertise and market skills for managing his business. His hardships were still not over, as due to lack of finances he had to resort to working as a labourer again for almost a year even after his training. With the money saved from his labour work and some loans from relatives, finally, he was able to launch his own enterprise. He had to grapple initially but his patience and hard work finally showed results and today, he makes a decent amount of INR 10,000-15,000 per month. He wishes to expand his business by opening a wholesale shop where he could both sell and repair phones one day.

Curiosity is your key to the coup.

“Go into the world and do well. But more importantly, go into the world and do better" Are the words the protagonist of this story lives by. Although not gaining education after completing her 8th standard, Manju Devi has become one of the bread winners in the family via the skill she possesses.

Living her life in Phalodi with eight siblings, Manju’s father couldn't afford her education after the 8th standard from his limited income. After sitting at home and doing household work for some years, she was married to a teacher, and yet again the same pattern of life kept her going. She was completely engrossed in her life until one day she came to know about the ‘Leather Goods' training at ICICI RSETI from her neighbours. Since leather goods manufacturing was something that her family was already involved in, she enrolled herself for the same. The training not only gave her immense confidence but also gave a full practical hand on making leather products.

On the successful completion of her training, she started working in her family business and supplemented the income of her house. Adding to her income, she does little embroidery work which fetches a real income of INR 6000 per month. She is happy to help her family and is able to manage her own expenses now.

“I was a housewife earlier, but today I’m a business woman who is proud of herself and wants to grow."
