Edenvale Care Centre Hospice’s Sister Leigh.

Struggling care centre could closeCHARMAINE SLATER

As the memories of Mandela Day slowly fade, one Edenvale care organ-isation faces closure.

As the last remaining government hospice on the East Rand, the Eden-vale Care Centre Hospice provides a vital service to those who are not only terminally ill but also unable to seek expensive alternative care.

“We cannot let it happen. We cannot close our doors,” said the organisa-tion’s Sister Leigh.

While the care centre regularly receives fi nancial support from the Department of Health, more than half of its fi nancial funding is sourced from corporates, small businesses and individuals.

“The Department of Health has been incredibly good to us, they even upped our budget, but my private donors have dried up,” Sister Leigh said.

Hospice East Rand recently closed its last remaining ward. This left only nurses offering home based care.

The critical care provided by Sister Leigh and her dedicated team of nurses in the 13-bed care centre and hospice can only be described as exceptional.

have medical aid. Our patients are re-ally down and out, not only fi nancially but also emotionally and medically.

While Sister Leigh receives patients from across Gauteng, many of those in her care are residents of Edenvale.

“I cover hospitals like Steve Biko, OR Tambo, Tembisa, Natal Spruit, Germiston, Edenvale and more, then I draw my line in Heidelberg,” said Sister Leigh.

In addition, some of the care centre patients are brought to Sister Leigh from other hospice organisations.

Wits Hospice recently found a man living behind a bowling green in Houghton.

“Houghton staff cleaned him up and he was brought to the centre with end stage cardiac arrest. At the time, he hadn’t seen his daughter in 22 years. She took one look at him and walked out the door,” Sister Leigh said.

“He, like many of the patients here, had nothing, not even a toothbrush,” she said.

Sister Leigh also regularly receives patients from surrounding informal settlements such as Alexandra and Makause in Germiston.

“A carer doing her rounds will fi nd someone locked in a shack, bedridden. They are locked in the shack by family

members.

“We have had cases where fam-ily members are simply left inside shacks and back rooms to die,” she said.

Sister Leigh partly attributes the loss of hospice care to organisations becoming greedy.

But we need to at least double our monthly income. We need to raise a further R60 000 each month on top of our current dona-tions,” said Sister Leigh.

Running costs for the care centre in-clude R10 000 per patient each month.

This month, while Sister Leigh’s dedicated staff will receive their mea-gre salaries, Sister Leigh herself will not be taking home a salary.

“Edenvale residents need to start looking at what they have in their back gardens before they lose a very im-portant part of the community,” Sister Leigh said.

Check your alarm systemA residential burglary in Edenvale Ridge has left a home owner feeling suspicious about his security provider, Fidelity ADT.

Taushan Pillay told the NEWS that on July 15 his home was broken into sometime between 4pm and 6pm.

Pillay said he is not certain if he did activate his alarm or not as he was in a rush to get to the hospital.

He said when he got home that evening the fi rst thing he noticed was a damaged access gate. Inside his home, Pillay saw that the tele-vision and a few other items were missing.

After further investigation, Pillay noticed that his veranda doors had been forced open.

“I pressed the panic button but nothing hap-pened,” said Pillay.

He said he had to go to a nearby ADT vehicle which contacted the control room.

The reason given to Pillay, by ADT, as to why there was no response to his panic button

activation was because no signal had been received by ADT.

Pillay said he fi nds this quite suspicious as the alarm had been working on June 24 and worked again on July 16, when it was tested.

“From my side, I am disgusted and disap-pointed with the service I received. I received better service from the SAPS than from the security company,” said Pillay.

He urged other community members to exercise caution and to ensure that alarm systems are in working order when leaving their homes.

Pillay said from now on he will test his alarm system every time he leaves the house.

Capt Jean Olckers, spokesperson of the Edenvale SAPS, confi rmed that a case of residential burglary is under investigation.

Pillay emphasised that community mem-bers need to take necessary precautions.

“Fidelity ADT can confi rm they received a phone call from another client residing in Fourth Avenue who reported suspicious activ-ity at Pillay’s premises on July 15 at around 8:46 pm,” said Aslam Munsur, Fidelity ADT’s community development manager.

He said a vehicle was immediately dis-patched and on arrival, ADT offi cers met with Pillay. It was determined suspects had gained entry to his property by breaking the padlock on the access gate.

The SAPS was notifi ed at approxi-mately 8.53pm.

“As no alarm activation had been received from Mr Pillay’s prem-ises, a technical team was sent to investigate on July 20 and this report is still outstanding,” said Munsur.

He said ADT offi cers fol-lowed standard procedure.

E d e n v a l e r e s i d e n t Taushan Pillay feels let down by his security provider after his house was broken into on July 15 and ADT did not respond to the pressing of the panic button.

The change of bank has not affected cus-tomers’ ability to pay their municipal ac-counts as all payments made are redirected to the City’s mask account.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, said the City of Ekurhuleni is in contract with Nedbank, which has been effective since September 2015 following a tender process that was awarded in the 2015/16 fi nancial year.

To minimise the inconvenience to over three million Ekurhuleni customers, pay-ments made into ABSA, Standard Bank and First National Bank accounts are

received and recorded as these accounts have not been closed.

“To ensure that the City’s payment level is sustained and to prevent customers from being in unduly arrears, no accounts have

been cancelled. For security reasons cus-tomers are encouraged to visit or contact their rates offi ces at their nearest customer care centre to receive Nedbank’s account details where payments can be made,” said Gadebe. Customers who prefer to make an electronic funds transfer, can do so through most banks including Nedbank, ABSA, Standard Bank and FNB branches across Ekurhuleni. Alternatively, payments can be made through the e- siyakhokha online payment system at www.e-siyakhokha.co.za as well as third party vendors such as Checkers and Pick ’n Pay.

Farmhouse placed behind bars

Going to court can be a tedious process, which can be made worse when a court case is drawn out over a long period of time.

Martin Christie recently raised concerns about the speed of low profi le court cases and the lack of urgency given to them.

The Edenvale businessman told the NEWS he has been to court about 40 times in the last three years for a case he is a witness in.

He said although he does not need to go to court any-more he wants to stay as up-to-date on the case as much as possible.

“I am beyond aggravated and frustrated.

“If it was a case where DNA needed to be collected and the perpetrator needed to be found, I could understand the delay,” said Christie.

He said in 2014 he was as-saulted by a known perpetra-tor. At the time he thought the court would have given a ruling within a year.

Christie believes there are two possible reasons as to why the court process is tak-ing so long.

He believes a lack of at-tention is given to low profi le cases and more attention is given to high profi le cases.

“In the last 10 years, I think the judicial system has collapsed. It appears there is no care or will to get things done,” said Christie.

Secondly, Christie believes the closure of one of the court rooms at the Edenvale Court has affected the speed of court proceedings in the area.

Originally Christie’s court case was heard at the Eden-vale Magistrate’s Court, how-ever, it was recently moved to the Germiston Magistrate’s Court.

Christie can’t understand why the court case needed to be postponed and relocated if there is another courtroom in

Edenvale.

A prosecutor at the Eden-vale Magistrate Court told the NEWS on July 19 that the courtroom has been closed for a number of years.

The prosecutor added that the movement of Christie’s case had nothing to do with the closed courtroom but rather the magistrate having to relocate to Germiston.

A request for comment was sent to the Department of Justice on July 20.

Comment was requested by July 21 at 1pm.

At the time of going to print no comment had been received.

Slow court process is a concern

STEPHAN LEHMAN

A devastated ward 18 councillor Heather Hart stares at Horwood’s Farm’s homestead as it lies behind steel mesh.

Surrounded behind a barrier of barbed wire and a fence, Eden-vale’s iconic homestead looks less like a heritage site and more like a quarantine zone.

“This is so depressing. I just want to cry. It is heart-wrenching,” said Hart.

Hart said the fence was put up by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality to prevent further vandalism of the old farmhouse.

The homestead, which has been reported on extensively, has seen a large amount of vandalism over the years.

Over the years the homestead has deteriorated further; light fi ttings have been taken out, the front door was taken, fl oorboards are broken and water leaks through the roof.

Since coming into offi ce Hart, along with others, has been dedi-cated to preserving the farmhouse.

Hart said in 2012 she appealed to the municipality to do something to preserve the homestead.

She explained that due to fi nan-cial limitations the EMM did not take action.

Hart explained that although she is happy the EMM is addressing concerns, a permanent solution must be found.

She is concerned the home-stead will be forgotten behind the new fence.

“If something had been done about the homestead back then, it would not be in the state it is in today,” elaborated Hart.

Besides preventing further vandalism of the building Themba Gadebe, spokesperson of the EMM, said the fence also prevents free access to the building.

He highlighted the fencing of the property is only a temporary measure.

“The decision to remedy the situ-ation was taken as early as 2010, but the city had to consider sug-gestions from other stakeholders, including the ward councillor of the area. This has led to the delay in implementing the decisions,”

explained Gadebe.

He said the erection of the fence is part of a plan to restore the building as the property has been identifi ed

as a Strategic Land Parcel.

A report regarding the property is awaiting approval from commit-tees of the EMM. Gadebe said if the report is approved the property will be allowed to be leased for development purposes.

Although the fence has been erected, Gadebe said the next step of restoring the homestead will be decided upon by council.

He said if council approves the report, the property will be restored by a successful tenant.

Members of the provincial task team arrested three suspects for possession and dealing in drugs at a Bedfordview property on July 19.

This comes after police received a tip-off about a suspect at John Page Drive and Main Street in Jeppestown, who was allegedly traffi cking drugs and supplying to his runners.

According to Jeppe SAPS spokesperson Captain Richard

Munyai, police proceeded to the Jeppestown address at the corner of Commissioner and Nugget streets in Johannesburg central. There they spotted a vehicle that fi tted the description given to the police.

“The police monitored the car. A man entered the car and drove to Goud and Albertina Sisulu streets, where he picked up a woman. The suspect then dropped her off at Von Brandis Street,” said Munyai.

Munyai said the police stopped the car and searched it.

“They found a plastic bag with white powder suspected to be heroin. The suspect was asked about the bag but he did not respond. Po-lice escorted him to his residential address. Upon searching him, they found three plastic bags containing a brown substance suspected to be drugs,” he said.

The police questioned the

security guard at this residential address and the guard confi rmed that the suspect has another house in Bedfordview.

“Police proceeded to his house in Bedfordview and found two more suspects inside the house. Ten plastic bags containing dagga and money were found,” he said.

The three suspects were arrested and taken to Jeppe SAPS, where they were charged and detained.

Drug bust in BedfordviewPolice confi scated the drugs, dagga, scales and money found at a Bedfordview property.

Two additional telephone numbers have been made available for police services in Edenvale.

Station management, under the command of Colonel Malesela Mapulane, issued the numbers to improve communications with the community.

Capt Jean Olckers, spokesperson of the Edenvale SAPS, said the numbers are not to replace any emergency or sector numbers.

He said they are to provide additional access to members of the crime offi ce and the client service centre (CSC) commander.

The new numbers are 061 717 7557 for the CSC commander and 061 712 2705 for the crime offi ce.

Olckers said the numbers will be available on a 24-hour basis.

For more information, contact Olckers on 011 553 8618.

Extra access to the police

The Edenvale SAPS is investigating a case of rob-bery following the armed robbery of a woman in Greenstone.

Captain Jean Olckers, spokesperson of the Eden-vale SAPS, said the woman was walking to work on the morning of July 20, when she was robbed.

“Two armed suspects travelling in a grey vehicle stopped next to the woman and robbed her,” said Olckers

Olckers said this was the second robbery of this nature - the fi rst one occurred last month.

In both robberies cell phones and purses were taken.

“The SAPS urges people not to walk alone but rather in a group,” said Olckers.

Anyone with information on these robberies can contact the SAPS. Information can be given on 10111, 0860010111 or the sector numbers.

On July 20 the Sebenza SAPS held a meeting with taxi patrollers and taxi drivers from the various taxi associa-tions which operate in the Sebenza area.

The meeting was also attended by the Sebenza Community Police Forum chairperson, Andrew Mosesi.

The meeting comes after the SAPS and the Sebenza SAPS Taxi Forum met on July 13.

The meeting highlighted the positive results that have been achieved since the forum was launched in May last year.

The forum is made up of representa-tives from the Kempton Park Taxi As-sociation (KETA), the Ivory Park Taxi Association (IPTA), the Lethabong Taxi Association and the Faraday Taxi Association, the Johannesburg – Tem-bisa Taxi Association (JTTA), the Tata Taxi Association (TATA), the Germi-ston Taxi Association, the Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA) as well as the Greater Alberton Taxi Association.

At that meeting, it was agreed a meeting with the taxi patrollers from various taxi associations would be the next step forward.

The Sebenza SAPS communications offi cer, Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso, said the purpose of this meeting with the taxi patrollers was to address the complaints the station receives from the public and commuters regarding taxi patrollers and drivers.

“We also wanted to address the challenges commuters have, in order to get resolutions and a way forward,” said Tsotsotso.

One of the issues discussed was the way taxi patrollers handle construc-tion vehicles that pick up their contract workers at the taxi rank.

“Another issue was the commuters

Sebenza SAPS met with taxi patrollers and taxi drivers to discuss concerns of the public.

who end up boarding the wrong taxis because of miscommunication between the marshals and commuters. Taxi pa-trollers must also stop harassing private vehicle drivers when they come to pick up their spouses at the taxi rank,” said Tsotsotso.

She also said the police face the challenge of taxi drivers carrying il-legal fi rearms and made an example of the taxi drivers in Soweto and Midrand who were arrested with illegal rifl es.

She warned that should something like that ever happen in the area, all those

implicated would face the full might of the law.

“The reason I’m raising this issue is because it has not happened in this area yet. I am raising it because I want you to remember that I called to inform you about it,” she said.

The taxi drivers and patrollers unani-mously agreed that the issue of con-struction workers, who are picked up at the taxi rank, was a serious concern.

Another concern was bakkies oper-ating as taxis in some taxi ranks.

They felt the police are not helpful

when it comes to dealing with such issues.

One of the patrollers said some of these bakkies waiting at the taxi rank take commuters whenever they see there is a chance to do so.

“Only taxis are allowed to transport commuters. It is illegal to transport pas-sengers in a bakkie, but we are disre-spected by these taxi drivers,” one of the patrollers said. The issue of private vehicles operating as lift clubs was also raised. Andrew Mosesi, chairperson of the Sebenza SAPS, said that by law, any

person wanting to operate a lift club is required to apply for a permit.

“When you decide to offer a lift club, you must apply for a permit. The application process will involve the taxi associations that operate in that area and they must approve it. Doing it without a permit means you are breaking the law,” said Mosesi.

The taxi drivers also raised concerns about the way some traffi c offi cers conduct their job. Mosesi advised that they will try, by all means, to ensure that the Johannesburg Metro Police and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police are present at the next meeting because some of the concerns raised, affect them.

“Some of the issues are bylaws and SAPS does not deal with bylaw issues,” said Mosesi.

He also proposed that a task team be set up in order to deal with these matters as they arise. The task team will be made up of the representatives from each as-sociation and SAPS.

Mosesi also raised the issue of educat-ing commuters and the public about how the taxi industry operates.

“I think some of the problems are created as a result of not knowing how things are done. It’s important for the taxi industry to communicate and create awareness about how they work and some of the issues that were raised here today. The industry must use the media to educate the public,” said Mosesi.

Tsotsotso has a slot on the Voice of Tembisa on Mondays and Thursday afternoons when she talks about crime.

It was proposed that the platform be utilised by the taxi associations to educate commuters and the public about the taxi industry. The matter still needs to be discussed further with the station and the taxi associations in order to decide on dates and times.

Celebration marks decade of care A fl otilla of colourful balloons fl oated up into the blue winter sky over Inyoni Creek on July 11.

The residents packed the waterfront club-house to enjoy the Rand Aid retirement vil-lage’s 10th birthday.

A full programme of fun ended with resi-dents lining the wooden walkway over the village dam to release their balloons and give thanks for the beautiful village they call home.

A surprise guest was reigning Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, whose ‘adopted grandfather’ Claude Pearce is an Inyoni Creek resident.

Demi-Leigh has been visiting the village since Claude, who is part of her extended family, moved into the newly-built complex 10 years ago.

South African pianist Rocco de Villiers’ hands fl ew over the keys as he showed why the title of his album, Beautiful Beautiful Hymns, is so suited to his music.

Between playing classic melodies, he had the audience laughing at his quick wit and funny anecdotes.

He shared the limelight when, during one song, Claude stood up and invited Demi-Leigh to dance.

A three-course meal was enjoyed and despite a divine apple crumble, residents found room for the specially-baked birthday cupcakes afterwards. The fi rst residents of the village, Graham and Dawn Kemp, were present and were reminded of a time when Inyoni Creek had little grass and few plants but the residents all had more hair.

“It is a little piece of heaven amongst the turmoil of South Africa,” said MC Peter Moore.

The village has put together a desk calen-dar in commemoration of its anniversary. It includes photos taken over the years by Inyoni Creek residents.

Rand Aid resident celebrates his 90thInyoni Creek’s Harry Voerman celebrated nine decades of life on July 11.

The resident of the Rand Aid As-sociation retirement village’s sunny apartment is fi lled with his paintings, which can be found on display across the world.

Born in Schiedam, Holland, Harry was convinced to follow a practical career and qualifi ed as a mechanical engineer, despite loving art from a young age.

He attended a technical school for two years and then continued his studies at the Academy of Art and Technical Science in Rotterdam from 1946 to 1949.

In 1959, he, wife Roely and their three children moved to South Africa and Harry continued his engineering career, holding a number of high-level positions.

Their fourth child was born in South Africa.

In 1969, at the age of 42, he could no longer suppress his artistic side and tackled his fi rst serious painting – a vibrant still life.

Harry loves South Africa and said it was a photo from his brother-in-law, who was already living in South Africa, of a Jacaranda-fi lled Pretoria, that prompted the family’s move from Holland.

This was against the backdrop of the acute housing shortage in the

Netherlands following World War II after the Germans destroyed over 95 000 homes.

In 1972, Harry partly shrugged off his old career to help his wife run an art, framing and gift centre which was initially based in Dunvegan.

Today it is situated in Van Riebeeck Ave, Edenvale, next to the windmill. Roely died in 1977.

Harry and later son Rob contin-ued to run the business until about a decade ago when it was sold.

In December, Harry; a grandfather of eight, will have been an Inyoni Creek resident for eight years.

“I am very happy here,” he said, praising the professionalism with which the village is run.

So far the Wooligans have made six blankets.

Besides the NMM project, Andrea hopes to assist needy organisations and give them some warmth.

She explained that the group does a head count at an organisation to determine how many individuals need a warm garment.

Once this has been done, scarves and blan-kets are parcelled up and given to the indi-vidual.

“When we do have these events we try to

give them love and recognition,” said Andrea.

Andrea urged more community members to get involved.

“The more people knit, the more lives we can change,” she said excitedly.

Keeping those in need warm is what Andrea Henderson hopes to achieves this winter.

Andrea, the Edenvale 67 Blankets for Man-dela ambassador and her group of Wooligans, have knitted 250 scarves, which were donated to the needy on July 13.

The scarves were knitted by the 24 Wooli-gans in six weeks.

Andrea said the Wooligans are made up of a variety of people with individual stories.

“No matter their differences, the golden moral thread between them all is their desire to help.”

Andrea said she fi rst got involved with the 67 Blankets initiative about two years ago.

“I was at a lo-cal SPCA event and saw the 67 Blankets for Mandela stall. After chatting to the man at the

stall I started agreeing with the ideals of the organisation,” said Andrea.

Soon after speaking to the man from 67 Blankets for Mandela, Andrea began knitting.

Andrea discovered how addictive knitting is. “It is the cheapest form of therapy,” she exclaimed.

“The whole idea of 67 Blankets is not just about warming those in need, but weaving the community together one stitch at a time,” explained Andrea.

Andrea managed to involve other com-munity members in the area. She spread the word on social media and it just snowballed from there.

One thing which the Wooligans are con-stantly looking for is wool, because without the wool, the Wooligans cannot help those in need.

Following the July 13 project, they don’t plan to sit idle.

Andrea said the group will begin working on blankets for the Nelson Mandela Mas-terpiece (NMM) project, which involves

making a massive blanket.

67 Blankets for Mandela organisa-tions from around the world will

unite in 2018 in the attempt to make a blanket which can be

Often people are judged at fi rst appearance, based on their looks, the way they dress or the state of their belongings.

Ambrose Nkosi, an aspiring social entre-preneur, is someone who has experienced this fi rst-hand.

He said although he worked in the corporate world, he is now “in the woods” and stays at the Kempton Park MES.

Ambrose is a man going through a time of hard luck, but despite this, has not given up on his dream to one day own his own digital media company.

Ambrose said he was born in Johannesburg and spent most of his working life in sales.

He said he gained experience in the corporate world by working in sales with DSTV.

However, despite working in these fi elds Ambrose said he was always “putting his own business idea aside for other work.”

“It is just the price I have to pay,” said Am-brose.

He decided to stop working to pay more atten-tion on his own business idea.

“I wouldn’t say I am struggling. I am just going through a challenging time. I don’t have a choice - I cannot give up,” said a smiling Ambrose.

The hopeful entrepreneur said while he is get-ting his business, Jedi Mark, off the ground, he works off a shoestring budget in a garage.

Ambrose explained that he won a phone in a competition at an exhibition held at the Gal-lagher Convention Centre which has helped him get his business rolling.

“There is a stigma generated by the security sector that if you are not neat and just standing around, you are a suspicious person. The attitude towards people down on their luck has become generalised,” said Ambrose.

For additional food and assistance Ambrose

visits Khanyisa Trust, which helps him with food and employment advice.

“Khanyisa is the light.

“It is more than a place for a meal; it’s a place to speak to people and develop friendships,” said Ambrose.

He said since going to Khanyisa he has noticed people in need often do not have confi -dence and self-esteem.

He hopes to help people build up their esteem - one day. In his opinion, this would help them fi nd work. Ambrose said people looking for em-ployees should look at Khanyisa because people there are willing to work.

“Businesses need to give jobseekers a chance. Yes, it is important to do background checks but there is so much potential among those at Khanyisa,” explained Ambrose.

Besides serving a warm meal each day, Kh-anyisa runs an employment placement service.

Tapping into Christmas spiritThe Christmas in July lunch for Edenvale senior citizens was recently held at the Edenvale Community Centre.

The lunch held on July 18 saw Christmas decorations put up at the centre and was enjoyed by all who attended.

On the day, senior citizens were treated to music, lunch, prizes and dessert, which was a Christmas fruit cake.

The art teacher from the creative art for seniors, Filippa Heyneke, said it was a lovely day spent celebrating together with

family and friends.

She said although it is only July it’s never too early to tap into the Christmas spirit.

“There’s a lot happening in the world and it’s great to focus on all good things that matter in our lives,” said Filippa.

Your feet take a lot of pressure and strain, but if properly looked after, will serve you well.

Cracked heals occur when the skin becomes dry and un-supple, and can be caused by poor diet, poor choice of shoes, a lack of appropriate foot-care, or a combination of all three of these things.

If you have cracked heels, then you need to deal with the problem. If you don’t, it will get worse, and could even cause bleeding.

From a dietary point of view, cracked heels often occur when you do not have adequate levels of zinc and omega-3 fatty acids in your system. Zinc is an important mineral, not only from the point of view of helping to prevent cracked heels, but it also helps to:

Maintain your sense of smell.

Keep your immune sys-tem healthy.

Facilitate protein build-ing.

Assist in the production process of DNA.

Another important mineral in terms of helping to prevent cracked heels from develop-ing is Calcium. It not only helps to prevent cracked heels, but it’s also well documented for supporting good holistic health in terms of supporting healthy bone growth and den-sity, helping with nerve signal transmission, muscle function, and the production of various hormones and enzymes.

Natural remedies for cracked heals include:

Oils. Various vegetable oils can be used for helping to remedy cracked heels; oil types to use include: coconut oil, olive oil, and sesame oil.

To get the maximum benefi t from using whichever type of oil you prefer, you should apply before you go to bed, fi rst scrub-bing your heels, and also the soles of your feet, with a pumice stone. Then wash and dry with a towel.

Next, apply the oil generously to both heels and soles, put on a pair of woollen socks and leave them on overnight while you sleep. Next morning, you will notice that your heels will be

signifi cantly softer. Continue the treatment until the cracks have completely disappeared.

Exfoliation. This is a way of removing dead skin and cracks. You can make an exfoliation scrub by com-bining rice fl our with a few tablespoons of honey and a few drops of apple cider vin-egar. Mix together and form a thick paste. If the cracking is quite severe, then you can add a tablespoon of olive oil or sweet almond oil into the mix.

Before you apply the exfoliation scrub, you should fi rst soak your feet in a bowl of warm water for 10 minutes, and then gently scrub the ex-foliation paste onto your heels. Finish by cleaning off with warm water, and towel dry.

The papaya mask. The fl esh of the Papaya fruit can be crushed and mixed with lemon juice to create a mask that can be applied to heal cracked heels.

Once the cracked heel pa-paya mask has been prepared, apply and leave in place for 15 to 20 minutes, before rinsing off and towelling dry.

New doctor beginsBased at Elphin Lodge retire-ment village, Dr Carmella Mielke is a general practitio-ner with a special interest in geriatric medicine.

She took over the practice in May 2017 from Dr Aviva Ruch.

Although she is based at Elphin Lodge, Dr Mielke sees patients from all the Rand Aid complexes and also has a number of outside patients.

“My late grandfather was the most amazing man, despite being sickly. He had to see a host of doctors for various ailments and received chronic medications from a number

of different specialists. His treatment regime fascinated me and I found myself think-ing how much more sense it

would make, if he had one doctor, holistically tending to his various ailments,” she said. This is what inspired her inter-est in geriatric medicine.

She is interested in poly-pharmacy, which is when multiple medications are taken concurrently to manage co-existing health problems such as diabetes and hypertension.

She said polypharmacy is often problematic in older pa-tients. Other interests include the risk of a Vitamin B12 de-fi ciency among older patients, which has been linked to neu-rological symptoms, dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Staff from the Edenvale SPCA together with staff from SENET at the Eden-vale SPCA on July 19.

SENET recently collected and donated over 1 205kg of pet food for the Edenvale SPCA.

The challenge was given to SENET staff to collect 670kg of pet food. If staff succeeded, the manage-ment would donate R6 700 in cash to

the SPCA.

The amount collected was almost doubled as a donation of R6 700 was also made to Urban Ruins and Saint Giles. SENET handed over the animal food to the Edenvale SPCA on July 1.

Thornhill Manor has started a Gratitude Wall in its community centre.

The idea was the brainchild of deputy complex manager Jackie Scott, who was inspired by an Eden Alternative course she recently attended.

Founded in America, the Eden Alter-native philosophy focuses on people-centred care.

In a culture that typically views ageing as a period of decline, the Eden Alternative philosophy asserts that no matter how old we are or what challeng-es we live with, life is about continuing to grow.

At the end of 2016, Ron Smith Care

Centre became the fi rst organisation in Gauteng and the second in Africa to become a member of the Eden Alterna-tive South Africa registry.

Rand Aid committed to working to-wards the roll-out of the Eden principles at all its properties.

A few of the Eden Alternative Do-mains of Well-Being are connectedness, meaning and joy, and it is these states that Jackie is promoting through her latest initiative.

Thornhill Manor residents have embraced the initiative. The Decor Com-mittee’s Penny Perrow and another cre-ative resident, Joan Scott, have helped

with the aesthetics of the project. The look and feel of the Gratitude Wall will be changed each month.

“We also intend displaying photos after village events of residents enjoy-ing the social gatherings that we offer,” explained Penny.

“This is a simple way of infusing a more positive feeling into the village, to counter the negative news that is so prevalent in South Africa at the mo-ment,” said Jackie.

Any resident, family member or employee is invited to write a positive message on a large whiteboard whenever the urge strikes.

Hard at work. Bafo Ncube and Epheous Dube from Schäffl er’s Garden Nursery, which has been contracted to carry out the maintenance of the landscaped gardens.

More fresh air and sunshine is on the cards for residents of Thembalami after the care centre had its grounds exten-sively landscaped.

Rand Aid contracted Schäffl er’s Garden Nursery and Landscap-ing to design six themed gardens, complete with seating areas and paved walkways.

Water features, two ponds and other eye-catching elements beckon residents outdoors.

Each of the six landscaped areas can be accessed via a number of doors leading from the care centre, which looks after physically and fi nancial-ly-vulnerable senior citizens.

The centre also incorporates the Max Ordman Deaf As-sociation (Moda).

In addition to the beautiful gardens, a large new lapa with

built-in braai and colourful chairs and tables was con-structed and the parking area out front now boasts beautiful gardens too.

It is hoped that the in-

vestment will encourage residents to enjoy the expan-sive grounds and will offer residents’ families and friends comfortable outside areas to

spend leisure time with their loved ones.

Although the landscap-ing was done with a focus on water-wise, easy-to-maintain gardening, the garden’s beds are a riot of colour and look as if they were established years ago.

The care centre under-went extensive renovations

following its 2016 merger with Moda, to accommodate the Moda residents who moved into Thembalami in June 2017, once construction was complete.

Mandela Day

Students and staff members of Edge Business School, based in Stoneridge, visited the Thembalami Care Centre in Lombardy East on Mandela Day and donated hampers to the 120 residents who live at the centre.

Hampers donated on Mandela Day

Residents Enzo Merolla and Christine Kincaid-Smith and cub pack leader De-siree Hogan with some of the visiting cubs from the First Edenvale Scout troop.

On Mandela Day, Ron Smith Care Centre residents welcomed a lovely visit from the First Edenvale Scout troop.

The boys and girls entertained residents with singing, dancing and poetry and then served tea and the delicious cupcakes which they brought with

them.

They then went to visit those residents who were in their rooms, bring-ing along a cupcake treat for each of them.

The af-ternoon was enjoyed by the cubs and

the residents, who always light up when they are visited by children.

Mandela Day

Top crocheters at Ron Smith Care Centre and Elphin Lodge: Jennifer Sigida (second), Sara Richards (fi rst) and Aletha de Klerk (third).

Elphin Lodge and Ron Smith Care Centre’s top three winners: Jean Johnson (third), Marlene Gordon (second) and Barbara Malan (fi rst).

Three Rand Aid complexes celebrated Mandela Day by seeing which complex could knit the most squares in the allot-ted time.

The Thornhill Manor women were clear winners.

They completed 2 631 squares before the competition began and 46 squares on the day, with some knitters making up to fi ve squares in their 67 minutes.

Knitters continued throughout the day and the fi nal number of squares contributed by Thornhill Manor added up to about 3 000.

On July 24, the nearly 4 000 squares from all three complexes were handed to a representative from 67 Blankets for Mandela Day. Residents from Elphin Lodge and Ron Smith Care Centre, as well as staff and volunteers, gathered in the hall to knit or crochet for 67 minutes.

Apart from the inter-complex compe-tition, an in-house contest was also held to see who could complete the most squares.

Some chatted away happily, whilst others concentrated wholeheartedly on

the task before them and knitted furi-ously. To sustain their energy coffee, tea and snacks were offered around halfway through the proceedings.

The care centre and retirement vil-lage contributed 334 squares. At Inyoni Creek, gas fi res were lit in the dining room area to keep the knitters ‘toasty’.

“It was a great initiative enjoyed by all,” said deputy complex manager, Marinda Looyen.

Inyoni Creek had 13 knitters on the day but also completed squares in the run-up to Mandela Day and was able to

contribute 440 squares.

At the winning complex, Thornhill Manor, 44 women met in the commu-nity centre.

“You could feel the buzz and excite-ment of the morning and the eagerness to get started,” said deputy complex manager, Jackie Scott.

The event was overseen by the organ-iser of The Knit & Knatter club, Joan Hepburn, who encouraged as many woman as possible to knit beforehand and to participate on the day.

The women also brought along

some home-baked goods to enjoy with their tea afterwards.

Zabeth Zühlsdorff, from Rand Aid’s GM Services and Advance Division, congratulated the women on a suc-cessful morning and the good deed of helping those less fortunate, and for ensuring that more people keep warmer this winter.

Mandela Day

The Natchem women’s team played soccer for Mandela Day.

Several companies in Sebenza came together in celebration of Mandela Day.

The collaboration was between Natchem, Aromatech Flavours and Brunational.

The hour started off with a friendly soccer match in the park at the end of the road be-tween Natchem/Aromatech and

Brunational staff members.

Brunational was unable to hold onto their win from last year, with Natchem/Aromat-ech’s men winning 4-1.

The women teams played to a draw.

After the matches, everyone made their way to the colourful

Natchem/Aromatech building to receive their boerewors rolls and juice.

All the money collected will go to charity.

On July 18 the ECID team spent their Mandela Day re-introducing a dash of colour and some plants back into the CBD.

Edenvale SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit, the Edenvale Youth Desk and Mamba got involved in the project.

ECID, with the help of the other groups, set out to plant some plants near the fountain and hanging pot plants on Third Street.

ECID has also seen to the fountain which had lain dormant for quite some time.

ECID hopes to rename the fountain the Nelson Mandela Free-dom Fountain.

Katy Young, public relations offi cer and events co-ordinator for ECID, says she drew inspiration for the Mandela Day project from the short alley which runs past De

Molen Pancake House and Eden Radio.

“I just wanted to extend the idea of hav-ing more plants in the CBD,” said Young.

She said the response from the com-munity, building up to the project, was fantastic.

Chairperson of the Edenvale Youth Desk, Megan Ricciardi, said all the

members of the youth desk were happy to be involved.

“All of us in the youth desk want to make a difference,” said Ricciardi.

On July 12 Edenvale members of the 67 Blankets for Mandela Foundation distributed over 100 scarves at Khanyisa Trust.

Kiley Cassel, an Edenvale ambassador for the foundation, said all the scarves were handmade, either knitted or crochet from wool that had been donated.

“We have a small group of women who meet regularly on a Saturday after-noon to make squares for this wonderful cause,” said Cassel.

She said the outreach committee from Holy Rosary School also assisted.

Cassel said it was overwhelming to experience the gratitude shown by people who received the scarves

On the day the group was joined by Sergeant Jacob Mashile, the head of the Edenvale SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit and Councillor Heather Hart.

“Jacob is always supporting our cause, we are so grateful for his efforts,” said Cassel.

She appealed to the community for wool donations to let the group continue the work they do.

“Anyone can join our group of women and will be welcomed,” said Cassel.

To join the group community mem-bers can contact her on 082 455 2935.

August is National Organ Do-nor Awareness Month.

South Africa is a world leader and a nation of many fi rsts because the fi rst heart transplant was performed 50 years ago by world-renowned surgeon Prof Christiaan Bar-nard.

South Africa is still con-sidered a leader in the fi eld of transplantation.

We are known for our world class transplant centres around the country with academic hos-pitals training fellows from all over the world and especially Africa.

We have many other proud recent fi rsts including the fi rst HIV positive donor to HIV positive recipient kidney trans-plant performed by Prof Elmi Muller of Univesity of Cape Town (UCT) and her team at

Groote Schuur Hospital.

Then the fi rst penis transplant was performed by Prof Andre van der Merwe and his team at Tygerberg Hospital in Decem-ber 2014.

Gillian Walker, national liaison person for the Organ Donor Foundation said, despite the above achievements, the South African public is slow to register as organ and tissue donors.

“Most shockingly, they are not prepared to donate despite that they are willing to receive if they need a life-saving organ transplant,” said Gillian. She said surveys performed by the Organ Donor Foundation in 2017 indicated that 71 per cent are not willing to donate their organs yet 77 per cent would accept an organ.

“Alarmingly, only 8 000 of

the 50 000 South Africans that should be receiving dialysis are being treated in the country. That means 44 000 thousand people are left to die or simply don’t know they are suffering from renal failure. A simple choice is that by signing up as an organ and tissue donor, any-one can change that statistic,” she said.

Gillian said kidney trans-plantation is an easy and very cost effective alternative to dialysis. “South Africa has world-class facilities in both the state and private sectors. There is no reason why South Africa should have one of the lowest percentages of trans-plants performed in the world,” said Gillian.

To register as an organ and tissue donor, visit www.odf.org.za.

August is organ donor month

Thembalami Care Centre resident Hugh Hutton, with a friend and Edenvale resident Denise Stewart, volunteering their time to cut the donated linen into single bed sheets and pillowcases.

Rand Aid’s Thembalami Care Centre hopes to make 1 000 pil-lowcases and single-bed sheets at its Sew-a-thon this year.

The centre regularly receives donations of linen that may have a tear or mark but are oth-erwise readily serviceable.

This linen, which is meant for double beds or bigger, is then cut by volunteers into pil-

lowcases and single bed sheets, ready for stitching on Sew-a-thon Day.

Run by non-profi t organisa-tion Rand Aid Association, Thembalami is based in Lom-bardy-East and looks after men and women who are physically and fi nancially vulnerable.

It also houses residents of the Max Ordman Deaf Association.

The Sew-a-thon will be held on September 30.

Members of the public with sewing machines and the will to help are asked to come along on the day and sew up the material into suitable bed linen.

Community members could spend their 67 minutes helping out at the society.

Nichollette Muthige, the public relations and communi-cations offi cer for Little Eden, said many of the visitors got involved in making arts and

crafts for the annual Christmas concert.

She said the turnout from the community was relatively good.

“The people who came also learned more about the soci-ety,” said Nichollette.

Nichollette explained that the open day gave Little Eden the opportunity to inform

the community, gain support and create awareness for the society.

“The residents here love the attention they get on these days,” added Muthige.

Are you in the mood for an early Christ-mas?

If so make sure you attend this special Christmas in July event (with a wag).

Hosted by the Din-Al-View CPF and Triton Real Estate the initiative is aimed at raising funds for the Bedfordview Germis-ton SPCA.

The dinner takes place at Fahrenheit Seafood and Grill, situated at the Lemon Tree Mall in Alberton on July 27 at 6.30pm for 7pm. Your entry fee, which is a tin/bag of pet food, will go directly to the SPCA.

Patrons will need to pay for their own food and drinks at the restaurant and a percentage of the gross bill generated at the end of the evening for all those attend-ing under the Din-Al-View banner will be donated to the Din-Al-View CPF.

The CPF will then donate the money to the Germiston SPCA. During the course of the evening, patrons will get the chance of winning two raffl e prizes - you do not need to buy raffl e tickets but must be present at the time of the draw.

To book your spot at the dinner contact

Teresa Robertson on 076 941 6989 (phone or WhatsAPP).

A second initiative by Triton Real Estate and the Din-Al-View CPF, to support the Germiston SPCA, is an XBOX 360 raffl e. Raffl e tickets are available and the winning tickets will be drawn at the Christmas in July event. You do not need to attend the event or be present to qualify for this great prize.

Teresa can be contacted for tickets, with 70 per cent of the proceeds from the raffl e going to the SPCA and 30 per cent to the CPF.

Saheti playschool chose to support the Bedfordview and Germiston SPCA on Mandela Day by highlighting the plight of homeless animals and promoting the adoption rather than the purchase of pets. Parents rallied in support of this Mandela Day drive by donating pet food, blankets and other necessities for the animals being cared for by the SPCA. A playschool learner is seen at the SPCA.

Saheti Primary School pupils spent their Mandela Day morning making ‘heritage shakers’ by recycling empty juice boxes and metal bottle tops and decorating their juice boxes with images that represent their heritage. The shakers were donated to Kids Haven’s Early Childhood Development Centres.

A day of Madiba magic It was a colourful affair with babies and tots dressed up in traditional African wear in celebration of Madiba.

Doeks, neck pieces, headbands, pleated skirts, ingwe (leopard) vests, beads and African printed dresses and skirts were the order of the day.

To celebrate, Huggy Bears Babies and Pre-Primary hosted a braai for the children which included pap and nyama (meat in Isizulu) as well as a magwinya (fat cakes in Setswana) as a snack.

The magwinya were specially made in the school kitchen by the principal Lisa Correia.

Hand-knitted blankets were also col-lected to be donated to families living in a nearby informal settlement.

“Using wool donated by Huggy Bears parents, myself and Rosa Fonseca knitted blankets. The DA Bedfordview branch also knitted more blankets and Com-munity Blessings, a local charity donated fl eece bankets,” said principal Correia.

“We encouraged the parents to dress the kids up in African traditional or South African sports attire,” she added.

Rui Ying Gao’s day was fi lled with festivities as she shares a birthday with Madiba.

She turned four years old on July 18.

Saheti and non-profi t organisa-tion Sisonke Nathi organised a

Christmas in July for 100 children at the Abraham Kriel Children’s

Home. The students handed over blankets to the children.

Saheti High School dedicated the month of July to Mandela.

On July 8, the high school, in collaboration with Sisonke Nathi, hosted a ‘Christmas in July’ party for 100 children at the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home.

Sisonke Nathi is a non-profi t organ-isation working with the homeless and destitute, as well as abandoned and abused women and children.

The non-profi t organisation organised the event, while students collected items to contribute on the day, and also assisted with all the activities that took place.

In addition to organising party

packs and fun activities, the learners also provided blankets - some hand-made - for each child. Canned food was also collected for the Sisonke Nathi pantry for soup kitchens that provide meals on a regular basis.

Collaborating to help those in need

Holy Rosary Primary School recently supported the 67 Blankets for Mandela Day initiative and collected 115 scarves. The scarves collected are to be donated to the less fortunate at the Khanyisa Soup Kitchen. Seen here are the learners showing off the collected scarves.

In a recent production, Saheti High School learners brought William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to life with fairy dust, an enchanted forest, a talking donkey and memorable performances. The major 2017 production transformed the George Bizos school hall into a theatre and provided a magical escape from reality. An enchanted scene from the production.

As part of their Mandela Day ac-tivities, Saheti Pre-Primary School learners packed two-litre containers

with specially selected food items and treats for Othandweni Day Care and Preschool and Resile Crèche.

They also collected toys for use at the Sterkfontein Hospital’s therapy sessions.

Fun times at school’s carnivalHoly Rosary School recently held its annual Carnival Day organised by the school’s Par-ents’ Association.

The fun-fi lled day saw entire families and guests playing human foosball, visiting the petting zoo, going for pony rides and enjoying the market stalls, amusement rides, live

entertainment plus so much more.

House of Style Models were part of the entertainment.

Jackie Allen of House of Style Models, said the show was choreo-graphed by Shelby Moura, Miss Eden-vale and included

Miss Johannesburg, Christina Hornsby.

Also at the event was Little Miss South Africa’s second princess, Chloe Haripersadt.

Everybody talks about the importance of grades and test scores, yet some parents neglect to show their children how to do well.

Children either don’t study at all or spend hours trying to study every night. Neither choice is good.

Students might need to do some extra studying before a test, but there are ways to stay on top of the information without having to put in hours of hours of work or burning out. Think quality more than

quantity.

First of all, get organised. Have a separate folder for each school subject. Keep things to be turned in on one side of the folder. On the other side, place all returned or corrected home-work, tests and handouts. Keep everything, at least until the end of the term.

For math tests. Do the end-of-chapter problems or the sample test. If you can do these problems, then you understand the most important concepts in the chapter and you should do

well on the test.

Redo any homework prob-lems you missed. Make certain that you understand where you went wrong the fi rst time. Ask the teacher to explain any prob-lems you still cannot do.

Memorise. You will be amazed at how much informa-tion you know after organising your notes and looking for im-portant words. Still, sometimes you must buckle down and commit things to memory.

Preparing your child for upcoming school tests

Tips to help improve your child’s self-esteemIf you’re looking for a place to start helping your child build positive self-esteem and self-value, then you should show them your positive sense of self and strong self-esteem.

Be positive when you speak about yourself and highlight your strengths. This will teach your child that it’s okay to be proud of their talents, skills and abilities.

Your child also benefi ts greatly from honest and positive praise. Find something about them to praise each day.

You could even give your child a task you know they can complete and then praise them for a job well done after they’re fi nished. Show your child that positive acts merit positive praise.

When your child’s feeling sad, angry or depressed, com-municate openly, honestly and patiently with them.

Listen to them without judg-ing or criticising. They may not fully understand why they feel the way they do, so the oppor-tunity to communicate with you about it may be what’s needed to help them sort through a dif-fi cult situation.

Suggest positive behaviour and options as solutions, and make sure to leave that door of communication open so they know the next time they feel bad, they can come to you for help and know that you won’t

When they’ve behaved badly, remind yourself that it’s not them you don’t like, only their behaviour.

judge or punish them for how they’re feeling.

Teach your child the im-portance of setting goals and developing a plan to meet that goal and complete that task.

Small projects are the best to start off with in the beginning. Ensure that it’s an appropriate task for your child, and not too complex. Don’t only give praise at the end of the project, but praise their accomplishments during the project as well.

Most importantly, tell your

child “I love you” each and ev-ery day, many times throughout the day, in fact. When they’ve behaved badly, remind yourself that it’s not them you don’t like, only their behaviour.

Tuck short, sweet notes in their lunchboxes or coat pock-ets, or even send them a card in the mail. Soon, they’ll learn to say “I love you” just as easily and honestly in return.

Information obtained from www.childdevelopmentinfo.com

Sports encourages life skillsSports activities and interests provide many positive oppor-tunities for children. How-ever, they can also cause some problems.

Many parents believe that par-ticipation in sports will enhance children’s school accomplish-ments, while others believe that sports get in the way of their children’s achievement.

Social skillsThe social aspect of sports

might be what entices children to play in the fi rst place. Youth sports participation enables chil-dren to spend time with friends in a safe environment and obtain social skills that are likely to last a lifetime.

Aside from bonding with peers, youth learn to solve con-fl icts effectively, reach common goals and learn to be more asser-tive, all while getting physical fi tness. A child’s communication skills also are enhanced after playing a sport, giving a child

needed life skills.

Competitive skillsAlthough there is such a

thing as being too competitive, it’s important for a child to understand the positive aspects of competition. Adults are sur-rounded by competition, from getting a job to moving up in the work force, and when children learn the basics of competition early, they have a better chance of succeeding.

Sports participation helps children cope with competition in a friendly environment. Work-ing to achieve a goal or being part of a team will help youth gain healthy competitive skills that they can use for the rest of their lives.

SportsmanshipSportsmanlike behaviour is a

lesson that children obtain from playing sports. Children learn to positively handle both the win-ning and losing aspect of play-

ing a sport, and good sportsman-ship is a trait that carries over from childhood to adulthood.

Athletes who focus on master-ing personal improvement have a good chance on later becoming hard workers. Good sportsman tend to better cooperate with others and make moral decisions instead of being ego-oriented individuals who behave badly, according to Education World, an online resource for educators.

Leadership abilitiesAchieving leadership skills

is a life lesson learned when children participate in sports. Obtaining leadership qualities that range from being a good character, to respecting others, to being task oriented can be accomplished in both team and individual sports.

A solid support system, such as a strong parental involvement and effective coaching, can help mould a child into being a leader now, and later in life.

Craig Johnston from Bedfordview, an ex-perienced A-grade paddler with a number of Dusi’s to his credit, is enjoying intro-ducing his daughter Jade to the exciting, adrenalin-fi lled sport of canoeing.

First-year paddlers require a certain number of points in order to enjoy A-grade rivers and experienced paddlers frequently team up with the newbies to help them learn and gain knowledge, skill and ability.

Jade has already earned three points towards her A-grade status and they are looking forward to the wild white water of the Fish River Marathon later this year, in Cradock.

The father and daughter duo fi nished a 30km race organised by their local club, Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC), in a time of two hours and 44 minutes.

VLC, based at Germiston Lake, has hosted a number of river races to provide opportunities for paddlers to gain stamina and endurance as they build up their mileage and prepare for the ICF World Marathon event that will take place in South Africa later this year.

Fiesta gets with the times > SEAN NURSE

There’s no doubt that the Fiesta is one of the most important models for Ford globally. The outgoing model has been with us for almost

a decade and in that time, has most certainly racked up the sales and critical praise that the brand would have wanted.

Now though, a new version has been unveiled, so I travelled to sunny spain to drive the seventh generation model which the brand claims is now more upmarket.

→ GRowN-Up lookSFrom an exterior design perspective, the Fiesta

has certainly matured. Up front we see narrow, aggressively styled lights more akin to the current Focus, while the bumper and grille design depends on which specification you've opted for, however the shape of the large gaping grille remains a Fiesta design element throughout the range.

In side profile, it cuts a typical B-segment silhouette with two lines running upward towards the rear of the car, one starting on the lower section of the A-pillar and the other towards the top of the A-pillar.

At the rear there are new oblong tail lamps and an overall design that looks very similar to the B-Max and Kuga on first glance. The car is still unmistakably a Fiesta in its appearance, only

more attractive and premium, which should please current and prospective Fiesta owners.

→ INtERIoR GoodSThe interior is perhaps where the new model

makes up the most ground on its predecessor. The quality of many of the plastics as well as the general fit and finish is a big step forward, although the odd surface still feels cheap, especially near the door handles.

The interior also does without all of the rather confusing centre console buttons for a more clean and simplistic look. The instrument cluster looks improved too, with a larger display and improved dials which makes drive information more legible.

There are three infotainment systems available on the new car, a more basic 4.2-inch unit, the mid-range 6.5-inch version and the top-of-the-range eight-inch version which I fiddled with at launch. The system uses the Ford sync 3 software and provides a lovely bright, high resolution user experience, although in terms of functionality, I'm still not convinced by Sync systems in general.

In terms of space, the front seats provide a comfortable environment, however, in the rear quarters, things get a bit more cramped. If you’re over 1.8 metres tall, knee and head room does appear limited but is acceptable. Boot space is improved with 290-litres of volume available.

→ ModElS ANd ENGINESAt launch, I had an opportunity to drive several

variants including the top-spec Vignale and ST-line models which are unlikely to reach local shores soon.Other models in the range include the familiar Titanium specification, with the Trend likely becoming the new base model within the range.

In terms of engine derivatives, for local Fiesta introduction sometime in the second quarter of 2018, expect a 1.5-litre turbodiesel as well as the familiar 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol to reach South Africa.

There will likely be two low-output 73kW 1.0-litre models with the option of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, while the high-output 92kW Titanium 1.0-litre and 62kW 1.5-litre turbodiesel will be available with a six-speed manual initially. Due to the fact that the model is only coming to local shores in just under a year's time, indicative pricing was not available.

I spent most of the launch driving a 1.0-litre which is now mated to a six-speed manual. The engine is still a gem and although not always the most frugal (I averaged 7.1-litres/100km), it does offer good overtaking torque and ensures that the car never feels underpowered.

→ ASSIStANcE tEchNoloGIESThe latest model comes fitted with a raft of

optional safety items such as Active Park Assist,

Cross Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Information System and Lane Keeping Alert to name a few. There's no word yet as to exactly which of these technologies will make their way to local Fiesta models, but expect a few to debut when the car arrives.

→ dRIvING FIEStAThe previous generation Fiesta was a great car

for many reasons, one of which was the fact that it was a fun car to drive. Despite the fact that the new model is more refined, it still feels compact and easy to have fun with. It retains that quintessential Fiesta attribute that combines fun with a reasonable amount of practicality.

I also noted an improvement in the ride quality and refinement inside the cabin at speed too. Towards the national freeway speed limit, there was some noticeable wind noise from the large side mirrors, but other than that, the driving experience is highly commendable for a car in the B-segment.

→ vERdIctThe latest Fiesta was a much needed product for

the brand. The seventh generation is an evolution in terms of style, but also an improved product in terms of refinement, technology and interior quality. When it arrives in South Africa in 2018, it will have a war on its hands but it comes into battle with the right weapons. •ad

Autodealer Jhb East | PAGE 2 | WEEK 30

@autodealersa Autodealer.co.za www.autodealer.co.zaThousands of used cars availableroad test

Audi A5 is extravagance in excessThere is a common theme here at the Auto-

dealer office when it comes to the testing of German executive cars. This thread appears to be that the price of these machines becomes entirely dependent on how liberal you’d like to be with the options list.

Take the Audi A5 that was recently delivered to our office as a prime example; here we have a car with a base price of R775 000, which on top of that had R225 640 in options fitted. I’m no mathematician, but basic arithmetic dictates that I had close to R1-million worth of Audi at my disposal.

→ The A5There’s no denying that the latest products from

Audi are sublime. I have only had the highest of praise for the latest A4 and after a week with the slightly sportier yet less practical A5, I was left as suitably impressed as I thought I’d be.

The model I had on test was the 2.0-litre TFSI equipped with quattro all-wheel drive and finished in Glacier White with contrasting black leather inside, all very sophisticated.

→ The looksMany of my colleagues criticised this car at

its national media launch for looking too bland, even when finished with the Sport exterior and interior trim. I have to say that I disagree; we’re in a stylistic era where you’re either way over-the-top

or minimalist in the strictest sense. The A5 certainly falls within the latter category

and excels as a result. Despite its restrained aesthetics, it still garnered enough attention from passersby to provide the driver with a sense that he/she is driving something a bit more stylish than a plain German saloon car. Leave the manic styling to the S5 and RS5 I say.

→ ThAT inTeriorWhere do I start with the master class that is

Audi ergonomics and interior design? Everything, from the way you’re seated to the materials and location of the switchgear just feels a cut above the rest in the segment.

It is even reasonably practical, with seating for four adults and a rather capacious 465-litre boot, considering it’s a coupe after all.

I realise that the excessive nature of the specification on my test car made the interior a better place with the likes of a Bang & Olufsen sound system, nappa leather, MMI infotainment with navigation, touchscreen and smartphone interface, Virtual Cockpit and heated front sport seats with lumbar and massage support all being fitted.

That said though, you don’t need all of the aforementioned features, although the Virtual Cockpit and updated MMI system are certainly tempting.

→ Driving A5Much like its A4 sibling, the A5 is a very satisfying

car to drive, there’s very little drama when pushing

on too, with reasonable driver feedback and a tendency to remain neutral or to understeer.

The 2.0-litre motor produces 185kW/370Nm which, when combined with the super slick seven-speed S tronic gearbox and quattro system, means that acceleration and general performance is more than adequate.

I had to remind myself that this is still the more vanilla offering in the A5 range, and that judging its performance might be over-critical when the S5 and RS5 are there to satisfy those wanting a performance car.

Still, it will get you to 100 km/h in less than six seconds and more importantly, will provide a supremely comfortable ride despite the test unit having Sports Suspension, Dynamic Steering and 18-inch wheels with low profile tyres fitted.

In terms of fuel consumption, don’t expect to come anywhere near the 6.2-litres/100km claim, but having said that, a figure of around 8.0-litres/100km is realistically achievable.

→ verDicTThe A5 is most certainly an accomplished product

and ticks all of the boxes that a medium-sized sports coupe should. It is usable on a daily basis, quite practical, reasonably fast and looks good.

I just find that price hard to swallow. I know it’s really up to the consumer to specify the car, but honestly, the pricing can literally jump up a segment if you want all of the extras.

I think it’s time that more of the popular options become standard, even if this drives the price up, as the consumer will at least be aware of what they are getting. •ad

Battle of the aesthetic performers IT’S NOT often that two similarly positioned cars

are launched within a week of one another, and it’s even more of a fateful encounter when we just so happen to have both on test at the same time.

This is exactly what happened when a Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI R-Line arrived at the same time as the updated Renault Clio GT-Line. We know what you’re thinking; it’s time for a shootout.

→ FRENCH FLAIRA perception changer is probably the best way

to describe the fourth generation Clio’s impact on the local automotive market.

Backed up to certain degree by the previous Sandero, the Laurens van den Acker penned Clio with its DeZir concept inspired looks, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and class-leading levels of in-car technology, effectively moved the goalposts in the fl edging B-segment, and helped alleviate the fears many buyers at the time had over the marque’s less than impressive reliability and aftersales record.

Now facelifted, the Clio features a sportier

GT-Line variant aimed at the bourgeoning sporty-looking-but-still-a-regular-model-under-the-surface segment.

→ GERMAN QUALITYOn the other end of the scale, we have the

well-established Volkswagen Polo, a car that’s nomenclature is worth its weight in gold.

The Polo is one of the best selling vehicles in South Africa, so when Volkswagen introduces a new variant, especially one with a sporty moniker, the general public and motoring media immediately wants to know more.

→ VISUALISING THE TESTThe recent arrival of the two cars at the Autodealer

offi ce seemed to be fate urging us to compare the two. Both cars arrived within an hour of one another, both fi nished in white and representing their respective brand’s take on what a sporty hatchback with a sensible powertrain should look and feel like.

Before we get to the nitty gritty of these two cars, let’s discuss the market for these type of vehicles fi rst. At a recent Volkswagen media event, we were privy to the fact that South Africa is the biggest market in the world for its R-Line trim line.

This means that for some of us, hatchbacks need only look great and don’t necessarily need

to be performance cars. In that case, these two cars are certainly appealing to us regular folk, but which one should you buy?

→ AT A GLANCEViewed on fi rst glance, you could be forgiven for

mistaken the Clio GT-Line for the lesser Dynamique, especially in its plain vanilla hue, but look closer and you will notice the 17-inch titanium grey alloy wheels, titanium grey mirror caps, restyled front bumper, unique bodykit, chrome tipped exhaust and satin silver diffuser. Combined with the regular Clio’s revised grille, new C-shaped headlights with Pure Vision LEDs and subtly enhanced rear facia, the GT-Line keeps its newfound identity close to heart, yet continues to rate as one of the best looking and stylish offerings few are likely to beat.

The Polo certainly pulls off the whole performance hatchback look with an R-Line logo on the radiator grille, sporty front and rear bumpers, sill extensions, a rear diffuser with an integrated chrome exhaust tailpipe, a rear spoiler and 17-inch Serron alloy wheels.

Despite the fact that the Polo is around seven years old now, Volkswagen has managed to keep the car looking fresh. The Clio certainly makes a visual statement with its modern lines, but there’s a sophistication about the way the Polo looks that

ensures it gives the Frenchman a run for its money. In the end though, with the votes counted, the

editorial team decided that the Clio wins the exterior design battle thanks to its fantastic interpretation of what a modern hatchback should look like.

→ INSIDE COUNTSStep inside the Renault, and you are immediately

greeted by a familiar sight albeit with a slight twist. While still boasting the same premium levels of fi t-and-fi nish, as well as piano key black detailing on the facia, the GT-Line adds a touch of fl air in the form of a leather trimmed RS steering wheel with GT-Line badging, Zamac gear knob, body hugging sport seats with GT-Line embossed head rests, and blue stitching on the gear lever, handbrake and seats.

Aside from the interior’s sporty garnish, the biggest highlight again comes in the form of the excellent seven-inch MediaNav touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, USB and satellite navigation.

Easy to scroll through and intuitive, the system also made smartphone pairing a breeze, however, the four-speaker Bass Refl ex sound system is still note quite up to standard in terms of sound quality.

Another downside to the interior comes when you tug the C-pillar-mounted rear door handle to

> AUTODEALER@autodealersa

get in the back. With the aforementioned sport seats in place, passenger leg room becomes tight, as does the headroom.

On the opposite side of the coin, standard equipment does not warrant for much criticism with the GT-Line featuring items such as cruise control, Hill Start Assist, rear parking sensors, auto on/off lights and wipers, electric windows all around, keyless entry, electric mirrors, push-button start, four airbags and ABS with EBD.

As for the Polo, expect the same sort of premium Volkswagen interior materials and solid build quality associated with the brand.

Standard features are respectable with the brand’s fi ve-inch Composition Colour infotainment system with connectivity package including Bluetooth and USB as well as iPhone/iPod interface as standard. The model also features fatigue detection, sport front seats with ‘Cell’ interior cloth and door trim, a multi-function steering wheel and front foglights.

However, our unit was also equipped with a few options, namely cruise control, climatronic air-conditioner, the smartphone friendly App Connect system, a rear view camera, front and rear Park Distance Control, the Light & Vision Package as well as a panoramic sunroof.

As lovely as the extra kit is, it does drive up the price quite a bit. That being said, the Autodealer team voted the Polo as the winner in the interior category by virtue of its superior ergonomics and better quality.

→ POWERTRAIN DEPARTMENTThe biggest hype surrounding the GT-Line comes

up front where the popular 898 cc three-pot makes way for the same 1.2-litre blown four used in the lower spec Expression and Captur crossover.

While power remains unchanged at 88 kW, torque improves from 190 Nm to 205 Nm with top speed being rated at 199 km/h and the 0-100 km/h dash taking nine seconds.

While modest given its sporty intensions, a lot of the drivetrain’s prowess is thanks to the slick shifting six-speed manual gearbox. Combined with an equally willing engine, featuring a rather intoxicating turbo whistle, and confi dence inspiring chassis, piloting the Clio GT-Line was effortless and a joy with the only downside being a slightly fi rm ride.

As for fuel consumption, the weeklong almost 500 km tenure saw the GT-Line return a fi gure of 6.5-litres/100 km, some way off Renault’s claimed 5.2-litres/100 km.

The Polo has a rather large disadvantage in the

powertrain department. In terms of its engine, it surrenders 200cc of displacement to the Renault and features three-cylinders, but still produces 81kW/160Nm.

Where its advantage lies is the fact that it comes equipped with the sublime seven-speed DSG gearbox as standard. This gearbox makes all the difference, not in terms of performance as the Polo is still slower on paper with a 0-100km/h time of 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 197 km/h, but in terms of daily driving and ease of use.

The three-cylinder motor works well with the gearbox, with good low down torque and smooth surge to redline, while consumption can be as low as 6.4-litres/100km if driven nicely.

This round goes to the Polo purely based on how easy the car is to use on a day-to-day basis. For those wanting some engagement, the Clio’s manual gearbox may provide a more alluring/irresistible driving experience.

→ OWNERSHIP PROPOSITIONBoth cars provide a tempting ownership

proposition as the duo both come from manufactures with a large dealer footprint and a dedicated local spares network.

In terms of a warranty and service plans, both cars come with satisfactory schemes in terms of

duration and how comprehensive they are. The Polo gets a three-year /120 000km warranty

and a three-year/45 000km service plan. The Renault benefi ts from a fi ve-year/150 000km mechanical warranty and matches the Polo with a three-year/45 000km service plan.

Where the Renault really comes into its own is in the price department. With more standard spec than the Volkswagen and a lengthier warranty, its list price of R264 900 sounds like a bit of a bargain.

The Polo comes in at R290 200, although our test unit was well over the R300 000 mark. That being said, the Volkswagen has the better gearbox and feels like a more premium product, while the Renault really makes a case for itself as a well-specifi ed and affordable entrant into the market.

→ VERDICTWith the potential of an EDC version of the Clio

GT-Line on the horizon in the near future, we found ourselves struggling to pick a winner.

Our conclusion is that it all depends on what you want from a vehicle. The Polo will provide a solid, premium and carefree daily driving experience but at a cost, while the Clio offers the specifi cation, value and increased driver engagement to the buyer. •ad

Preventing fatalities starts at the toP

Dear Editor

In 1998, when I first arrived in Dubai, lawlessness on the roads was unbelievably bad with Shk Zayed Road, the main thoroughfare through Dubai to Abu Dhabi, being especially notorious.

The death toll in the UAE as a result of motoring incidents (they are not accidents because they are caused by negligent or stupid actions) were huge. Increasing traffic volumes and improved road systems spurred an initiative from the government, resulting in additional road safety measures being introduced. These were then actively implemented and subsequently continuously improved upon.

The Road Traffic Authority (RTA) is known for its tireless efforts and unique approaches in addressing the road safety challenges in Dubai. Recently, RTA has taken a unique initiative to improve road safety by painting selected roads

in red. The multi-phase initiative is designed to alert motorists of a change in speed limit, thus allowing them to adjust their speed and avoid an over-speeding fine.

With the implementation of these newly amended traffic rules, Dubai police have adopted a zero tolerance policy against offenders. The implementation of these laws has also helped motorists as similar violations have been combined into a single infringement to simplify the rules.

Would it not be wonderful if our government took a similar initiative to make the saving of lives a priority? Proper action needs to be put into place and it starts from the top.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the bakkie market is growing at a rapid rate with expectations suggesting a 43% growth worldwide by 2026.

it’s only logical that they are wanting to capitalise on that market with the world’s first truly premium bakkie. I flew to the global unveiling of the much anticipated X-class in Cape Town to get a first-hand experience.

→ Isn’t It just a REBaDGED nIssan nav-aRa?

One of the X-class’ biggest talking points has been its sharing of underpinnings with the new Nissan Navara. Despite having the same ladder-frame chassis and even being built alongside the Navara in Barcelona, the X-class receives a revised coil-spring suspension setup, different gear-box software and additional hardware changes, Mercedes-Benz claims is bespoke to what their version of a bakkie should be.

In terms of the dimensions, the X-class shares its 3 150 mm wheelbase with the Navara, but with a 85 mm gain in overall length (5 340 mm vs. 5 255 mm), 70 mm in width (1 920 mm vs. 1 850 mm) and a 11 mm drop in height (1 819 mm vs. 1 830 mm).

→ thE looksAlthough not as radical as the concept, it still

has an unmistakable Mercedes-Benz face, with the front end taking after the SUV offerings from the brand. A variety of bumper design options are also available depending on specification levels, while LEd headlights are standard on the top spec Power model.

For the base X220d, the engine produces 120kW/403Nm, while the X250d features the flagship Navara’s twin-turbo setup with ratings of 140kW/450nm. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard on both models with a seven-speed au-tomatic optional on the latter. Both however can be had with either rear or selectable four-wheel drive.

Available from next year, the X350d’s 3.0-litre mill develops 190kW/550Nm, linked to Mercedes-Benz’s 7G Tronic gearbox, with drive going to all four wheels via the familiar 4Matic all-wheel drive system with five modes (Comfort, Eco, Sport, Manual and Off-Road) as part of the Dynamic Select system.

→ DRIvInG thE X-classOur drive both on-and-off-road was short, but

what I can say is that the X250d I drove felt re-

The rear also differs from the concept in that it adopts a more traditional look rather than the wraparound lights, yet it still comes across as fresh and simple. Another element I like is the fact that Mercedes-Benz has custom made load bin acces-sories specifically for the vehicle.

→ What’s It lIkE InsIDE? Unlike the Navara, the X-class features a

Mercedes-Benz specific design with a vari-ety of colours and materials on offer, including a segment first wood trim finish. It most certainly comes across as the most luxurious bakkie this side of the Volkswagen Amarok.

Aside from the Power trim level, the X-class can be had in two other specifications, Pure and Progressive with these model featuring a 5.4-inch colour display on the centre facia, as opposed to the range topper’s 8.4-inch comand online system. The Power also gets electric front seats with two way lumbar support, dual-zone climate control, a multi-function touchpad and ISOFIX mounting points as standard.

→ Is It safE? Without doubt the safest bakkie ever made,

the X-class boasts a number of safety tech, both standard and optional, including items such as Active Brake Assist, 360 degree camera system and Parking Assist, seven airbags, tyre pressure monitor, Trailer Stability Assist and Lane Keeping Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition.

→ EnGInE lInEupIn terms of power, the X-class will initially be

offered with a choice of two Nissan sourced diesel engines both displacing 2.3-litres, and later a Mercedes-Benz-made diesel V6 as the top-spec unit.

ally good with loads of rear-end grip, informative steering and good power delivery. On the off-road course, I found the ride to be comfortable mostly thanks to that revised suspension.

→ WIll It WoRk In south afRIca?We as South Africans are very critical when it

comes to our beloved bakkies, hence the reason for Mercedes-Benz designing the X-class specifi-cally to meet market demands also shared with other areas such as South America, Australia, New Zealand and Eastern Europe.

On the face of it, the X-class comes across as something quite special. it’s not going to be cheap and i don’t think it will outsell the Hilux or ranger any time soon, but it is unique and has definitely moved the goal posts in the premium bakkie segment.

A Mercedes-Benz bakkie you say?

the X-class has been one of the most highly anticipated vehicles of 2017 so far, let's hope it delivers the goods. picture: Mercedes-Benz sa.
