QMy husband and I have a 14-month-old daughter who attends a local German day care. During German holi-

days when her day care is closed, she attends the Army’s Child Development Center as hourly care. The CDC allows parents to call 30 days in advance to reserve hourly care. Can the Ramstein CDC do the same? Since my husband and I work on Ramstein, it would be more convenient for us to use the Ramstein CDC versus at Landstuhl or Miseau. Ramstein CDC will only let you call the day of for hourly care, which isn’t conducive for working parents looking for an alternative to their normal day care.

AThank you for your question and providing us the opportu-nity to discuss hourly childcare within our Air Force Child Development

Centers. Our mission is to provide quality, affordable and accessible programs that provide direct support to mission readiness.

To provide hourly care, we would have to designate empty slots and not fi ll them so that when we have hourly children we are within mandated provider to child ratios. Unfortunately, we cannot currently support hourly care as we have more than 180 members on the waiting list who are either single parents or military married to military needing full day care. As a result, we only offer

hourly care through slot vacancies as a result of absences related to vacations and illness.

All KMC programs offer a rental slot program in which full-time parents may place their child’s slot in the rental program for a short period of time. Our Family Member Programs Flight Child Development Programs offers 502 full-time childcare slots and rec-ognizes additional slots are required to meet the growing demand.

Now, the good news – under the OSD Child Care Emergency Intervention Program, there are three childcare construction proj-ects underway in the KMC with an estimated completion date of January 2010. Once complete, there will be an additional 284 slots available – 164 in CDC and 140 in School Age Programs.

Unfortunately, since our current total waiting list is 308, we will likely not be able to offer reserved care. We truly hope these projects will help meet the needs of military parents throughout the KMC.

The Commander’s Action Line gives KMC members a direct link to wing leadership and is a way for KMC members to ask a question or express a concern on the policies and proce-dures of the base, as well as discuss safety and security issues. By now, most of us have heard that all U.S. government agencies, including

the Department of Defense – down to every individual work center and administrative support offi ces – are supposed to buy “green” products.

But let’s take a step back to review for a moment what “buying green” means.

Some of you may not recall that President Bush signed Executive Order 13423 – Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy and Transportation Management – into law on Jan. 24, 2007.

This law puts into effect many new goals and milestones for federal agencies to advance the nation’s energy security and environmen-tal performance. It also requires purchasing environmentally-sound goods and services, including bio-based products.

This means, every time we purchase sup-plies or equipment, we must consider “green” products.

These are products having the following environmental benefi ts:

• Made with recycled content• Made with bio-based products

• Energy and water effi cient• Alternative fuels or vehicles• Renewable energy sources• Sustainable building materials• Lacking in ozone-depleting substances or

priority-listed toxic chemicals• Electronic product environmental assess-

ment tool-registered electronic equipment•Environmentally preferableUsers of the DOD EMALL, an Internet-

based electronic mall, purchasing system, should have received training on using the green tree symbol to identify and locate “green” products. Other buyers of goods and services for the Army and local tenant agen-

cies must consider the above characteristics for all purchases and contract activities.

Exceptions to buying “green” are only authorized when environmentally-preferred items are unreasonably expensive, not avail-able within reasonable time frames or have proven not to be of serviceable quality for the intended purpose.

Another example exception might occur with a unit having an alternative fuel-capable vehicle assigned.

They wouldn’t be required to drive several miles out of their way to fi nd an alternative fuel fi lling station that would defeat the ben-efi ts of using the alternative fuel.

However, in all cases where environmen-tally-preferred products are not used, a record should be maintained documenting why not; otherwise, this could result in a negative fi nd-ing during environmental auditing.

So, let’s make a mental note: let’s make our purchases “green,” and not only for work.

Be sure to consider “green” alternatives for home and personal items as well.

If you’re an Air Force master sergeant look-ing for an exciting, career-broadening oppor-

tunity, then I have the answer for you. The Ramstein Career Assistance Advisor’s

office is sponsoring a First Sergeant Recruiting Seminar Tuesday.

The seminar will provide interested personnel with information about the many positive aspects of the first sergeant career field, including the screening and application process.

Being a first sergeant in today’s Air Force has been the most rewarding job I have had in my career and one of the most a senior noncommis-sioned officer can do, and is both professionally and personally satisfying beyond all expecta-tions.

It is a three-year special duty with the pos-sibility to extend for an additional three years, and offers qualifying master sergeants the chance to step outside of their AFSC to become a key enlisted leader.

Freed from operational and production require-ments, the first sergeant focuses on enlisted issues within the unit. Also known as “the shirt,” he or she advises the commander on topics such as morale, discipline, recognition and the profes-sional development of enlisted members.

He or she also makes sure the enlisted force understands the commander’s policies, goals and objectives.

“The shirt” works closely with fellow SNCOs, supervisors, and base agencies to maintain a mis-sion-ready enlisted force. This unique position offers leadership experience few other master sergeants receive.

“The first sergeant is an extremely valuable member in a successful organization. They serve as the commanders eyes, ears and conscious. Just as a suspension bridge connects two vibrant cit-ies, the first sergeant bridges all gaps between organizational leadership and the people,” said Col. Angela Thompson, 435th Medical Group commander.

The first sergeant position is also a very chal-lenging one that requires a great deal of commit-ment and personal sacrifice.

As a first sergeant, you will frequently work long hours and often get called away from family and friends late at night and on weekends.

Sometimes, you must put aside personal beliefs to ensure discipline is fair and equitable across the unit. As a first sergeant, you must always be prepared to put the needs of the unit and its enlisted force ahead of your own.

However, the demands of this challenging and prestigious position are out weighted by the sat-isfaction you get from helping a person who was in desperate need just days earlier and are now in your office telling you, “Thanks, ‘Shirt,’ I am doing so much better now and don’t feel like the weight of the world is on me.”

“The sacrifices of our ‘shirts’ and their fami-

lies are enormous. However, conquering the toughest challenges offers the greatest fulfillment and that’s what being a first sergeant offers,” said Chief Master Sgt. Mitch Stippel, 435th Air Base Wing command chief.

“The shirt” is often the first person to respond to a crisis and receives training to deal with a variety of situations.

“First sergeants are an integral part of the ser-vice delivery process for the Airman & Family Readiness Center. The time they take and energy they expand in support of the center enables thousands of Airmen and their families to get the assistance needed to become self sufficient,” said Gayle Brinkley, Airman & Family Readiness Center chief. “They endorse our visibility and opportunity to reach out to the Airmen in your units, thus maintaining readiness capability.”

It can sometimes be difficult to talk to people about their personal difficulties, but knowing you have the ability to point them in the right direc-tion and help make a difference in their lives makes it much easier.

Although it’s never fun to pass on a Red Cross message telling someone a loved one is very ill, it’s heartwarming when you can ensure the member will get home to be with their family during trying times. Though it’s a tough job, it’s good to know that you can help our Airmen and their families when they need it most.

“The American Red Cross has a close working relationship with first sergeants in assisting servicemembers in times of emergency. Though the Emergency Communication Messages the Red Cross delivers may contain information on ill or injured family members, we are always confident the servicemember is in good hands and will be taken care of by his or her first sergeant,” said Austin Young, assistant station manager, Red Cross Ramstein.

The experience you gain as a first sergeant will undoubtedly make you a better leader. And, after three or six

years, you can take that experience and leader-ship skill back to your original career field.

This benefits you, your gaining unit, your career field and ultimately, the Air Force.

“The role and importance of the first sergeant cannot be overstated,” said Chief Master Sgt. Steve McDonald, 86th Airlift Wing command chief. “Throughout my career, I have developed a deep appreciation and gratitude for first ser-geants. I constantly find myself relying on these enlisted leaders for advice and assistance.”

Everyone has their mission within a unit from supervisors and superintendents to first sergeants and commanders, but the first sergeant is the only position with the sole responsibility of ensur-ing the health, morale, welfare and discipline of Airmen.

If you have a passion for taking care of peo-ple, if you desire to directly impact the lives of Airmen, if you embrace new challenges, you may have what it takes to be a first sergeant. The Air Force needs people willing to make a differ-ence.

The upcoming first sergeant recruiting semi-nar will be a great way to find out more about this exciting career field.

The seminar will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday in Bldg. 2402 (where base INTRO is currently held). Priority will be given to master sergeants who are within 10 to 15 months from their DEROS, but any interested master sergeant may attend.

To find out more information about the seminar, contact the Career Assistance Advisor, Senior Master Sgt. Joel Tilley at 480-9472. Before enrolling in the seminar, you must ensure your first sergeant is aware.

In the last three years, the num-ber of accidents and abuses involv-ing government vehicles has steadi-ly risen.

This year alone, 12 percent of the vehicles assigned within the KMC were involved incidents.

This has cost KMC units a total of $206,000 this year and a grand total of $714,000 over the last three years just to put these valuable assets back in service.

Not every accident is pre-ventable; how-ever, the vast majority of accidents are.

This, cou-pled with abus-es, is a major drain on your unit’s resourc-es. What most users are not aware of is the own-ing or using unit is responsible for paying repairs of accident or abuse damaged assets. Units are not bud-geted for accidents or abuses.

What does this mean? Quite simply, this means your unit will have to pay for these repairs out of its operating budget.

These unexpected expenditures can have a significant impact on how much money your unit will have to pay for normal operat-ing expenses, office supplies and

worse, quality of life projects.Abuses are actions that cause or

could cause damage to a vehicle that cannot be contributed to the normal fair wear and tear or acci-dents.

Failing to turn-in the vehicle for scheduled maintenance, failing to maintain fluid levels properly or intentionally damaging the vehicle are examples of abuse. This consti-

tutes destruc-tion of govern-ment property and should never occur. Abuses com-promise the unit’s readi-ness as well as tarnish its reputation. It can also have financial con-sequences for

those caught vandalizing the vehi-cles.

Additionally, for every vehicle in maintenance damaged by an accident or abuse means one less vehicle your shop has to complete its mission.

Furthermore, accidents and abus-es create a backlog of work in vehi-cle maintenance, and in-turn, slow down the repair of assets requiring routine maintenance. Preventing accidents begin with you.

According to the director of

traffic safety at the American Automobile Association, 25 to 50 percent of accidents are caused by driver distraction.

Safety is the key word. Think safe, act safe and drive safe to pre-vent accidents. Know the road con-ditions, pay attention to the other drivers you share the road with,

use a spotter when backing up and, most importantly, know your limi-tations.

These simple actions can help reduce your chances of causing or being involved in a motor vehicle accident.

The Ramstein Commissary turned into a speedway stocked with free food as Airmen and family mem-bers raced through the aisles Dec. 18.

All part of the 435th Services Squadron holi-days giveaways, three lucky Ramstein members were given five-minute shopping sprees.

“We wanted to give back to the community during the holiday season, and what better way to make some-one’s holiday special then by giving,” said Julie Rich, 435th SVS marketing direc-tor.

Kenneth Cole, 435th SVS deputy commander, said the squadron was looking for something different to give away, and “stocking stuffers was thought up because we just wanted to do something out of the box.”

The three participants were picked from a “stock-ing stuffer” drawing, which included three categories – E-1 to E-5, 0-1 to 0-3 and the spouse of a deployed servicemember. Each con-testant had five minutes to get as much as possible in their cart. Everything was up for grabs outside of rationed items and medicine.

“I thought it was very generous for services to put this together,” said 2nd Lt.

Barbara Van De Water, 435th ABW Equal Opportunity deputy chief.

The lieutenant said her goal was to get as many non-perishable food items as she could.

“My husband called at four this morning to make sure I was doing my stretch-ing,” she said. “He also told me to do well in the Air Force today and to make him proud.”

While the shopping spree was meant to benefit the winner, the spirit of giving motivated some to choose otherwise.

Lieutenant Van De Water chose to donate all of her winnings to Staff Sgt. Andrew Post and his family, whose wife unex-pectedly passed away last week leaving him with four young children to care for during the holidays.

“I’m donating all of this because it will save him time from having to go to the commissary. You can never do enough for some-one in this type of situation, and every little thing helps,” the lieutenant said.

To some in the competi-tion, it came as a surprise that they had won the draw-ing.

“I was just so shocked to find out I had won the draw-ing. I didn’t know what to think when I was notified,” said Wendi Newell, wife of Staff Sgt. Shane Newell, 735th Civil Engineering Squadron.

The contestants all had a game plan of just exactly where they would hit first.

“My goal of the shop-ping spree is to get as much seafood and steak,” Mrs. Newell said. “I talked to my husband last night, who is deployed, and he was really excited. He told me to get as much steak as pos-sible, and even told me if I needed to buy a freezer, then do it.”

Amid the cheers of her children, Mrs. Newell did very well for her family – accumulating $2,602 worth of groceries.

“I’m very proud of my mom. She did really well,”

said her son, Zach Newell. From steak and shrimp,

to energy drinks and cere-al, baggers had no trou-ble identifying who owned each cart by its contents.

“I tried to get a lot of drinks and juice. It went very quickly, and now I’m tired,” said Airman 1st Class Alfred Hayes, 435th Munitions Squadron.

Not only does giv-ing play a big role in the holidays, but gratefulness and appreciation can also always be found.

“Thank you everyone who helped put this event together,” said Airman Hayes, who successful-

ly grabbed $881 worth of items. “I live in the dorm and am on a meal card, so usually I would not come to the commissary. This really helps out a lot.”

While the shopping spree was fun and enter-taining, the event certainly captured the spirit of the holidays and the spirit of giving. Anyone interested in making a donation to the Post family can contact Master Sgt. Randall Nelson, 1st Communications Maintenance Squadron first sergeant, or deposit money in the account at Community Bank under Staff Sgt. Andrew J. Post.

removed and reinstalled the digital bright radar indicator tower equipment, a system designed to give controllers a view of the airspace around the installa-tion.

The project was finished ahead of schedule and saved the Air Force more than $60,000 in contractor fees.

“The SMT’s knowledge and experience was instrumental to the new tower cutover success,” said Master Sgt. Jeffrey Dawson, Spangdahlem’s 52nd Communications Squadron ATC and Landing Systems section chief. “With their help, we completed the project on time and under budget.”

the ground to those who coordinated with three other MEDAVAC (medical evacuation) companies to evacuate the wife of one of the Sheiks who led the Anbar Awakening, across two-thirds of Iraq,” said Maj. Andy Risio, the C/1-214th Avn. Regt. commander.

Started in 2005, the Anbar Awakening is an alliance of Sunni Arab tribes that opposed al-Qaeda in Iraq and united to help maintain security.

Sergeant Raines said it was a seven-to-10-minute flight to the pickup zone during the January mission and that they tried to make two attempts before coming in for their first actual landing.

“But, where we landed – it was too hot for us to stay on ground so we had to reposition – hovering for about 20 minutes before we could land about 300 meters north of our initial landing,” Sergeant Raines said.

While Sergeant Barlet kept his eyes on the ground covering security for his medic and aircraft, Sergeant Raines and ground forces loaded two of the Marines into the Utility Helicopter-60 Black Hawk.

The other Marine was killed in action. From the debriefing, Sergeant Barlet said he learned that the Marines had

been injured by a blast from an improvised explosive device, and Raines discovered later that one of the two Marines evacuated had died.

Assigned to the Multi National Forces-West, Charlie Company evacu-ated more than 1,800 patients and flew 3,995 hours in support of Coalition Forces. The company’s petroleum, oils and lubricants section pumped more than 400,000 gallons of fuel.

“I had operation crews who received every call for missions – any hour of the day or night – from four remote sites,” Major Risio said. “My mechan-ics maintained a 90 percent operational readiness rate for the entire length of the tour.”

A remarkable feat, Major Risio said, given that the company’s aircraft fleet of 12 UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters was 23 years old or older and had been in the desert for two tours – at least 27 months.

“We weren’t as worried about someone shooting us down as we were about having to land for maintenance or a malfunction out in the middle of the desert, 200 miles from nowhere,” Major Risio said, adding that many of the company’s missions lasted three to four hours, often doing what they call a “tail-to-tail” with another one of their aircrafts.

Sergeants Barlet and Raines were paired up throughout the deployment, completing more than 100 missions together. Charlie Company deployed to Iraq in July 2007 and returned home Nov. 2.

“We did that last mission in October as professional, disciplined and by the book as we did the first mission – 15 months earlier in August, a year-and-a-half previously,” Major Risio said.

The company just celebrated its 40th anniversary during the deployment, serving tours in Vietnam, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait.

Charlie Company has been based at Landstuhl Heliport since Oct. 15, 1989.

RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, TEXAS - Department of Defense officials recently expanded the areas of eligibility for the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.

The approved additions are two countries - Morocco and Burkina Faso - and Operation Nomad Shadow, with an initial AOE of Turkey and Northern Iraq.

In March 2003, President Bush approved the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal for active-duty, Reserve and Guard military mem-bers in recognition for their service in the Global War on Terrorism. To be eligible, individuals must have deployed abroad on or after Sept. 11, 2001, for service in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Servicemembers who qualify for both the Iraq Campaign Medal and the GWOT-EM during the same Operation Nomad Shadow deployment can be awarded either medal, but not both. Servicemembers are not entitled to more than one campaign or expeditionary medal for the same period of service.

For more information, Airmen can contact their local personnel sec-tion or call the 24-hour Air Force Contact Center at (800) 616-3775.

A new Kentucky Air National Guard unit, the 123rd Contingency Response Group, is com-ing up big for Ramstein’s 86th Contingency Response Group.

The 123rd CRG, only officially formed in April, sent two aerial porters this summer to aug-ment the 86th during Operation Assured Delivery in Tbilisi, Georgia.

There, they worked side-by-side with their active-duty counterparts from the 86th, bringing much-needed humanitarian support to the area after the Russian invasion.

The arrangement quickly proved itself benefi-cial to both units, and soon after the 123rd sent a small security forces team with the 86th CRG’s 786th Security Forces Squadron on a mission to an undisclosed location.

“I’m most proud that this is a home-grown initiative. No one told us we had to develop this relationship – it just seemed like a good idea,” said Col. Timothy Brown, 86th CRG commander. “It’s turned out even better than we hoped. The guardsmen bring a positive, can-do attitude. They arrive ready to do the job and don’t leave until it’s done.”

As the acknowledged forerunner in modern-day contingency response, members of the 86th CRG spend a lot of time away from home and need support from units like the 123rd. In exchange, the guardsmen have an opportunity to learn the techniques proven most effective in the field. The new friendship is already showing divi-dends on both sides.

“It’s a stepping stone for the 123rd and the 86th to work together, build camaraderie and learn how each other works so we can feed off of each other,” said Staff Sgt. Brian Leach, an aerial porter with the 123rd, shortly after returning from

Georgia. “Obviously they’ve been doing this longer than anyone else in the Air Force, so we need to learn as much as we can from the best and then take it back home and get our guys up to par. If we ever need (the 86th), or they ever need us, we can trust each other. I’m sure everybody on both sides will agree.”

Being a new unit doesn’t mean its mem-bers are new to the job. Members of the 123rd were hand picked for the mission, based on their experience.

“It’s a relatively new specialty within our job, for the guard guys, but it’s still based on our Air Force specialty code,” Sergeant Leach said. “We take our job knowledge from our AFSC and form it into a specialty, which is the CRG.”

Tech. Sgt. Adam Keller, a 123rd Security Forces member who spent his active-duty days doing similar work for the 435th Airlift Wing when it was still stationed at Rhein Main Air Base, is taking special interest in how things develop.

“It’s good to see how we went from before CRG existed to how we’ve actually developed it into the CRG we’re doing nowadays,” Sergeant Keller said. “The 86th has really run off with it and done a good job.”

One of the most valuable commodities the guardsmen provide their active-duty counterparts is rest.

“We learned that most of (the 86th CRG mem-

bers) have at least 45 days of leave on file, so us being there to augment gave them some much-needed time off, which is good,” Sergeant Leach said.

One 86th member was able to leave Georgia and go home to see his child off to his first day of school after they arrived, he said.

“If we hadn’t been able to come in and go downrange, he wouldn’t have been able to see his kid’s first day of school. Maybe not a big deal for some people, but it was a big deal to him.”

The future looks bright for this new working relationship, and may open the door to similar cooperation between other units in the CRG com-munity.

“I’m very excited, mainly because this is a chance for us to get out and see how the active-duty CRGs operate,” Sergeant Keller said. “The 86th CRG and the 786th Security Forces have a long history of doing this kind of work, so we’re going to take what we learn back home to our new unit.”

Experience what it feels like to have the ear of the network pro-gram director and the chance to change what you see and hear on the American Forces Network. Go to the AFN Europe Web site and say what you think should be on the radio and how you prefer to get your military news on TV.

Go online to afneurope.net, click on the link to the survey and sound off on the mix of music, types of information and shows airing on AFN radio. Your feedback will help

AFN Europe decide when to have live hosted DJ shows and whether the network should change current programming. The survey is avail-able until Feb. 19.

AFN Europe broadcasts two radio services to concentrations of military personnel and families in Germany, Italy and Belgium: AFN The Eagle and the Power Network. AFN The Eagle is a family-friendly blend of music and entertainment airing on FM 106 in Italy and a mix of mostly FM frequencies in Germany and Belgium. The Power Network airs on FM 107 in Italy and mostly AM fre-quencies in Germany and Belgium.

It features news and information shows such as Morning Newswatch, National Public Radio and Rush Limbaugh, as well as shows such as “Connections,” a blend of oldies and news.

The survey questions on AFN Television focus on when you watch TV, what channels you watch and how you want to see your Europe and base military news. The network also wants to know if you prefer getting your military TV news in a 30-minute AFN Europe Report, two-minute newsbreaks, the Web, a podcast or another way.

From January through mid-Feb-

ruary, AFN stations will be live at post exchanges, commissaries and other high-traffic areas encouraging people to take five-to-10 minutes to go on line and fill out the survey.

Stop by and fill out the survey there, or just wait until you get home or have a few minutes at the office.

There’s an added incentive to fill out a survey. The Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, is giv-ing away a three-night stay for two adults at its resort, as well as a one-day ski or snowboard lesson, rental equipment and lift passes for the appropriate slope.

Michael Buffer, professional ring announcer for boxing and wrestling matches, and his wife Christine vis-ited the United Service Organizations throughout the KMC in December for their second time.

While in the area they visited the Ramstein Air Terminal USO, the 435th Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility USO, the Warrior Preparation Center and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

During his visit, Mr. Buffer expressed his support and respect for all servicemembers. He also engaged in light conversation about sports, personalities and Hollywood stars.

“I think it’s great that Michael came back for a second visit. He is a celeb-rity and well-known among young boxing fans,” said Kaiserslautern USO Director Konrad Braun. “He

certainly put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces over the past two days.”

As a Vietnam veteran himself, he understands the importance of such visits, which is why he continues to participate with the USO.

“I served in the Army for three years during the Vietnam war,” Mr. Buffer said. “I remember how much it meant to me when people came to visit us.”

While visiting with servicemem-bers, Mr. Buffer signed autographs and gave out boxing gloves to all of the patients he met.

“I used to watch the fights he announced,” said Army Sgt. Jose Cruz, from the 4th Infantry, 2nd Brigade, based out of Ft. Carson, Colo. “I can’t believe I met him today. If it weren’t for the auto-graphed glove, my brother would never believe me.”

For many, just having a famous guest around made their day, particu-larly those who’d seen him announce numerous times.

“It’s good to see someone get-

ting out and seeing us,” said Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Oliver Cooper from Camp Lejeune, N.C. “I remember him doing the announcements for a fight I went to when I was a kid.”

And while KMC members who missed Mr. Buffer’s visit this time can certainly catch a glimpse of him

on television, they may be able to catch him in person again as he plans to visit in the future.

“It’s rewarding knowing the little bit of fame I am blessed with is con-tributing to the morale of troops,” he said. “I am proud to be a part of this.”

The 39th Transportation Battalion’s 66th Transportation Company con-tinued readying themselves for an upcoming deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom by spending some time at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels.

“We are going to be pulling line haul missions all over theater and to other locations. We will basically be the distribution line for the entire the-ater,” said Capt. Christopher Brown the company commander for 66th Trans. Co.

With such an important mission the Soldiers received a lot of realistic training while at JRMC.

While at JRMC, the 66th Trans. Co. Soldiers wore multiple integrat-ed laser engagement system gear.

The gear simulates being shot if targeted by a member of the oppos-ing forces.

“We started with situational train-ing exercise lanes where platoons go out and conduct operations, engage enemy targets, and come under con-tact with indirect fire and improvised explosive devices while they are on the roads. These are all things that they would potentially have to deal with while they are deployed,” said Brown.

That training included a con-voy operation that came upon some Iraqi army soldiers who had been wounded.

The unit was required to evalu-ate the casualties, radio in a nine-line medical evacuation request, and carry the wounded to a simulated helicopter evacuation site.

During the training at JRMC the unit was graded by observer control-lers, who watched the 66th Trans. Co. Soldiers perform the tasks given to them and then evaluated how these Soldiers reacted to the various situations.

The unit is then given a grade for that scenario based on its perfor-mance.

The grading system allows the unit to see which areas they need more training in and which tasks they are proficient in.

“They (the observer controllers) are very helpful. If they see some-thing you are not doing right, they let you know. If you are doing it right, they might tell you to tweak it a little to perform better and to maximize your strategy,” said Pvt. Jesse Crye, a motor transport operator with the 66th Trans. Co., who has been with the unit for six months.

A large number of the 66th Trans. Co. Soldiers have served in the Army for a relatively short period of time and have not deployed.

“Our Soldiers have been doing really well. I’m surprised by that because most of our Soldiers are new. We get out there, and they learn quickly and adjust,” said Staff Sgt. Joshua Holman, a transport opera-tor and squad leader for 3rd Platoon, 66th Trans. Co.

Congress authorizes paternity leaveEligible Airmen are now authorized 10

days of nonchargeable paternity leave after the birth of their newborns, courtesy of the 2009 Duncan Hunter National Defense Authorization Act passed by Congress.

The law applies to married, active-duty Airmen.

The Airman’s wife must have given birth to the child on or after Oct. 14.

“This is going to have a positive impact on our Air Force families,” said Senior Master Sgt. Rhonda Britt, the directorate of person-nel services special programs superintendent. “By giving our new dads more time to bond with mom and baby, we’re building a stronger Air Force family.”

Paternity leave, which may be authorized in conjunction with ordinary leave, must be taken on consecutive days and within 60 days of the birth of the baby.

For extraordinary circumstances, com-manders may authorize paternity leave up to a maximum of 90 days after the baby’s birth.

As with any administrative absence, the commander may deny paternity leave when it would have an adverse impact on the readi-ness or operational mission of the unit.

Bake cookies and get promoted. While it sounds much easier than the military promotion system, it sums up exactly what a teenager from New Jersey did to gain his next rank in Boy Scouts.

So, what may have seemed like just another holiday cook-ie drive at Ramstein, was actu-ally the result of months of planning and a long journey across the ocean.

Ian DiFiore, a 15-year-old Boy Scout from Troop 36 in Oradell, N.J., handed out cookies at the Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility Dec. 12 for the final stage of his leadership service project on his journey to Eagle Scout.

Currently a Life Scout, Ian must meet six requirements to obtain Eagle Scout.

He must be active in his troop as a Life Scout for six months, demonstrate that he lives by the Scout Oath and Law in his daily life, earn a total of 21 merit badges, serve actively in a position of

responsibility for six months, plan, develop and give leader-ship to others in his service project and meet a board of review.

He chose to come to Germany for his leadership service project after becom-ing the cooking instructor for his troop and possessing a desire to help wounded mili-tary members.

While getting to Germany may have seemed like a dif-ficult task, his biggest chal-lenge was organizing his troop members to make this proj-ect possible. Ian organized 35 scouts into five to six groups that covered specific areas of the project including baking, packaging and writing letters of appreciation totaling more than 175 hours of work.

“The purpose of the project is to boost servicemembers’ morale,” Ian said. “The cook-ies are a way of comforting them in a time of need and letting them know that people back home in the states care and are thinking about them.”

After flying over from the states with his mother, Ian was in Germany for four days handing out approximately 1,100 cookies to servicemem-

bers transitioning through the CASF on their way back to the states.

Ian’s actions did not go unnoticed.

“The patients appreciate the effort Americans are mak-ing to give them a little bit of home during this holiday season,” said Tech. Sgt. Shea

Harkness, a CASF in-house coordinator.

And though Ian’s overall goal was to achieve his Eagle Scout rank, he said he learned a lot from completing the project.

“I learned that with hard work and teamwork you can touch a lot of people in a great

way,” he said.Eagle Scout is the

highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America.

The rank of Eagle Scout is held for life and, since introduced in 1911, has been attained by 1.7 million people.

Everyone has different motivations to exercise. But if you’re are a Soldier, your

exercise motivation may simply be to pass a Physical Training test.

One of the pitfalls of preparing Soldiers to meet the physical rigors of completing the mission may be overtraining, or overuse. Overtraining occurs when the amount of exercise is out of balance with recovery or rest. When this happens, it can cause injury.

The Joint Services Physical Training Injury Prevention Work Group thoroughly reviewed proven injury-prevention strategies in the military. The group found that too much running was the primary contributor to overuse, and those at the

greatest risk of injury are those who are least fit.A large amount of military and civilian research

shows that the amount of running significantly increases the risk of leg injuries. During initial military training, about 25 percent of men and about 50 percent of women incur one or more PT-related injuries. About 80 percent of these injuries are in the legs and are caused by exces-sive running. The group found that decreasing the amount of running helped reduce injury.

Marine recruits in a 12-week boot camp had a 54 percent reduction in stress fractures of the legs with essentially no change in aerobic fitness when they reduced their running mileage 40 percent.

Another study compared male Navy recruits assigned to basic training divisions who ran either 12 to 18 miles or 26 to 44 miles. The lower- mileage division had lower injury rates, with 1.5-mile run time improvements that were the same as

the higher-mileage divisions. A reduction of 20 miles of running during this

Navy recruit training reduced injuries by 20 per-cent without negatively affecting physical fitness.

There are thresholds of running above which injuries increase dramatically without any sig-nificant gains in fitness. Running frequency of five times a week versus three times a week for 30 minutes increases the incidence of injury by 225 percent without significantly improving fitness level.

Running durations of 45 minutes versus 30 minutes three times a week increases the inci-dence of injury by 125 percent without any sig-nificant change in fitness.

The bottom line: If Army leaders are seri-ous about taking care of Soldiers and reduc-ing PT-related injuries, there is plenty of hard evidence that proves less is more.

Constant running causes overuse injuries

Every year as winter sets in, homemak-ers begin struggling with keeping mold

growth to a minimum. The damp conditions that come with the

season make it prime growing season for spores that cause mold growth.

Molds reproduce by means of tiny spores that are invisible to the naked eye and float through the air.

Although not usually a major problem indoors, mold has the potential to cause health

problems if left untreated. The usual causes of growth are leaky roofs

and pipes, and growth begins when spores land on wet surfaces.

Molds produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions), irritants and, in some cases, potentially-toxic substances.

Inhaling or touching mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Mold loves poorly-ventilated rooms, leaky pipes, roofs and humidity above 60 percent. And it hates well-ventilated rooms and dry air below 60 percent.

According to the U.S. Army Garrison Bamberg Department of Public Works, there are steps you can take to prevent mold buildup in your home.

They include:• Air out bathrooms thoroughly after taking

showers or baths.• Air out apartments thoroughly at least

twice a day for 10 minutes. Windows need to be opened completely, not just slanted.

• Use a ventilation system when cooking and taking showers or baths.

• Prevent water damage by reporting leaking pipes to the environmental or housing office.

Prevent mold buildup, keep illnesses at bay

From after Christmas until late January, children disguised as

the three holy kings can be seen walking from house to house in the KMC.

They have paper crowns on their head and carry a big golden star on a pole. They sing, pray and ask for charity collections for their parish.

Each year, about 500,000 children participate in the fundraiser event that was established in 1959.

More than €600 million was col-lected to support more than 51,000 projects and relief programs for chil-dren in Asia, Africa, Latin American,

Oceania and East Europe. Germans officially observe Three

Kings Day, or Epiphany, on Jan. 6. The day marks the end of the

Christmas season. The Christmas tree is lit for the

last time, discarded, and the orna-ments are packed away until next Christmas.

Three Kings Day is one of Germany’s most traditional and char-acteristic religious holidays, but it is a legal holiday only in the states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Sachsen.

The children asking for dona-tions represent Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. In former times, when ringing door bells, they received Christmas cookies, pretzels and sau-

sages. After receiving a donation, the three holy kings bless the house by writing with chalk “20C+M+B09” above the doors to keep evil from entering.

The three letters C, M and B don’t stand for the kings’ initials, but for the Latin words “Christus Mansionem Benedictat,” which literally means, “Christ bless this home.” The bless-ing has to stay over the door until the

next Three Kings Day. Caspar is Hebraic and means trea-

surer, Melchior is Hebraic and means the king of light, and the Babylonian name Balthasar means “the Lord may protect the life of the king.”

The three wise men were con-sidered kings, because when Christ was born they came to the stable and brought gifts of gold, incense and myrrh.

True fans were over-joyed in August

to get their hands on the newest book from the “Twilight” series.

“Breaking Dawn” should satiate fans like dessert after a fabulous meal. This fourth install-ment of the story of Edward, Bella and Jacob had me feeling pleased, confused and wound up. I read the whole thing in 24 hours because I couldn’t stand to put it down.

I was pleased to find out that the series finished after “Breaking Dawn” because Stephenie Meyer is writing “Midnight Sun,” the prequel to “Twilight.”

“Breaking Dawn” is a surprise-filled episode in the “Twilight” saga.

Bella Swan is no lon-ger an average teenage girl. I found her to be a determined, more confi-dent young woman with her sights set firmly on what she wants in life – human or immortal.

It was a joy to see her like this. The writing style of “Breaking Dawn” is differ-ent than the other books; the first and last parts are written from Bella’s familiar voice, but the middle section is seen through Jacob Black’s eyes. I adored his perspec-tive and the sarcastically-funny chapter titles.

Meyer’s reoccurring themes of the strength of family bonds, true love and abstinence before marriage take their strongest stand in “Breaking Dawn.”

The values from her per-

sonal belief system come through like a clear light as she presents her popular characters with strong moral centers.

A facet of the “Twilight” series that is a fan favorite is the Cullen family and their personalities and abilities.

Their power as a fam-ily shines in this installment as several new and fasci-nating friends and enemies are introduced. Bella and Edward’s undying love grows by leaps and bounds in the most mature ways.

The lingering threat issued in “New Moon” of the Volturi visit is terrify-ingly realized with immense consequences.

All in all, I found it to be a great finish to Meyer’s fantastical world filled with vampires, werewolves and the human girl who loves them.

“Breaking Dawn” by Stephenie Meyers

Saw V (R) – Af-ter Jigsaw’s grisly demise, Mark, the final apprentice to the serial killer, is deigned a hero. Meanwhile, Agent Strahm is tested and puts the pieces together.

While Strahm realizes that Hoffman is helping Jigsaw, five seemingly-uncon-nected people face a horrible lesson about teamwork.

Strahm follows all the leads he can get off Hoffman, including the death of his sister and why he joined Jigsaw. Hoffman and Strahm circle each other until it boils down to a gruesome and bone-crushing finale.

Starring Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor and Scott Patterson.

Changeling (R) – Christine said goodbye

to her son, Walter, and left for work. When she came home, she discovered he had vanished.

A fruitless search ensues and months later a boy claim-ing to be the 9-year-old is

returned. Dazed by the swirl of cops, reporters and her conflicted emotions, Christine allows him to stay overnight. But in her heart she knows he is not Walter.

As she pushes authorities to keep looking, she learns that in prohibition-era L.A. women don’t challenge the system and live to tell their story.

Slandered as delusional and unfit, Christine finds an ally in activist Rev-

erend Briegleb, who helps her fight the city to look for her missing boy.

Starring Angelina Jolie and Gattlin Griffith.
