When health-related businesses start up in the Louisville area, move here or grow here,

they join a wider landscape of creation and growth that reaches far across the local economy.

Healthcare is big business in Louisville, and getting bigger.

The local health-related industry employs 72,000 workers who draw an annual payroll of

$2.3 billion. Eight of the top 20 employers in the metropolitan area are health-related busi-

nesses. Of eight Fortune 500 companies in Kentucky, three are in healthcare – and two are

headquartered in Louisville, Kindred Healthcare and Humana.

The area’s health-related activity ranges from research on the leading edge of medical

technology, to entrepreneurial efforts to bring the fruits of this research to the marketplace, to

large, long-established companies with national and international reach. There are service

companies, national staffing firms, software companies, medical equipment firms and life

sciences companies.

Many of these businesses benefit from another major feature of the Louisville economy –

its logistics industry. The city is centrally located – nearly half the nation’s population lies

within a 500-mile radius – and its transportation connections are excellent. It has major rail

service, sits on a major commercial waterway, the Ohio River, is at the intersection of three

north-south and east-west interstates, and is the home of United Parcel Service’s international

hub, an express-service facility that can sort more than 300,000 items an hour. To complement

these connections, the city has facilities that meet federal standards for the storage and ship-

ping of biological products, pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

This means the area’s businesses have an ability to ship goods in and out that is almost

unrivaled in the United States. Among the nation’s 328 largest cities, Louisville ranks Number

Two as a transportation and distribution center. MedVenture Technology Corporation,

Louisville’s largest medical device manufacturer with over 60 employees, can offer related

benefits to its customers. They can produce devices on a second shift ending as late as mid-

night, and ship from the UPS air hub with arrival by 8:30 a.m. in any city served by UPS Air Line.

The Health Enterprises Network is an affiliate of Greater Louisville Inc., and is charged

with promoting the growth of the region’s health-related economy. It assembles data on

the community’s health-related activities and their economic impact, provides networking

opportunities for health-related executives, entrepreneurs and venture capital investors,

develops economic growth strategies and is an advocate for the health-related industry’s needs.

Our vision is for the region to be globally recognized as a “location of choice”for health-

related businesses, researchers, educators, investors and consumers. Our mission is to

champion and foster the growth of the region’s health-related economy.

Specific activities of the Network include promotion of a white paper urging

legislative action to increase funding for university research programs, improve funding

mechanisms for Medicaid and curb growing medical liability costs. Also, it sponsors three

public meetings per year for the local health-related business community that each

attract more than 250 people. These activities are carried out in pursuit of our six key

strategies, which include:

• To Establish Knowledge Networking Capabilities for Health-Related Enterprises

• To Collect and Disseminate Data on the Health-Related Economy

• To Develop a Promotional/Marketing Plan that Aligns the Region with the

Health Enterprises Network Visioning Statement

• To Improve Access to Capital

• To Increase and Improve Human Capital Available to Health-Related Companies

• To Create a World-Class Infrastructure for Health-Related Enterprises

To be included in the Guide to Health-Related Businesses a company must be doing

business in the health care industry in Louisville. It is not required that a company be

engaged only in the business of health care, but it must derive a substantial portion of its

business from the industry. Also, the company must have a physical presence in

Louisville’s 24-county economic area. At a minimum, the company must have an office in

the region (home-based operations can count as a local office, such as a group of sales

professionals working from home for a national pharmaceutical company). The 24-county

economic area surrounding Louisville, defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, includes the

following counties:

Our final criterion for inclusion is whether the company could be easily found in another

directory or guide. All members of the Health Enterprises Network are included in the

guide, regardless of any other criteria, but we have chosen to exclude others who can be

easily found in other guides. Examples include the nearly 1,500 individual facilities (such

as hospitals, nursing homes, physical therapy clinics, etc. whose parent company is likely

already listed) and physician, dental and chiropractic practices.

Because these are critical components of the health industry in any city, all are easily

found in guides published by the Kentucky Hospital Association (kyha.com), The Luken

Group’s Guide to Nursing Home Facilities (lukenassociates.com), Jefferson County

Medical Society (jcms.org), Kentucky Dental Association, Kentucky Association of

Chiropractors, Cabinet for Health and Family Services in Kentucky (especially their

Certificate of Need office), Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure, Indiana Health

Professions Bureau and the Indiana Department of Health.
